The highest point of death rates. Remember this is likely to hit in two weeks. No state, no metro area will be spared. President trump extending social distancing guidelines through april. His denial at the beginning was deadly. His delay in getting equipment to where its needed is deadly. The virus has just torn through new york city and its suburbs with frightening speed. Most of the deaths have happened in the span of just a few days. April will be worse than march. May will likely be worse than april. Prime minister Boris Johnson who is quarantined with the coronavirus released a video message on his twitter page. Thank you to all of you and remember, stay at home. People in several states are cleaning up from tornadoes. Severe weather through the central u. S. From texas into the midwest. All that is there any Bartolo Colon cant do . Not even a World Without baseball can stop big sexy all that matters. Why we have to maintain social distance, you dont have to be emotionally distant from each other. Welcome to cbs this morning from our house to yours. Were coming to you from each of our homes this morning because we, like you, are practicing social distancing out of an abundance of caution like so Many Americans watching right now. We are at home. The most important thing we believe is that we continue bringing you the news, which we will do throughout this crisis. Lets get right to the latest. Federal stayathome guidelines that were due to expire today have been extended until at least the end of april. Thats one month from today. Heres where we stand right now. More than 143,000 coronavirus cases are reported across america. More than 2,500 people have died. New york state has, by far, the most cases. More than 59,000. But the numbers are going up rapidly in states like louisiana, michigan, illinois and california. Our lead National CorrespondentDavid Begnaud is reporting from his home here in new york. David, how much worse do we think this is likely to get . Well, anthony, let me give you a scenario of whats happening between the communication with the federal government and the State Government. The president says the resources are plentiful in arriving but at the state level, especially here in new york, there seems to be a diskeng disconnect. You have leaders and icu nurses saying were still not getting the masks we need to protect ourselves. Youll hear from louisianas governor this morning who is a democrat, but has not criticized the president. And says i have been asking for ventilators from the National Stockpile and as of now have not gotten any. Back here in new york, hospitals are getting creative as they are being asked to do more. Mt. Sinai hospital in new york city is now setting up tents in central park to treat the citys growing number of coronavirus patients. Were going to be using every place we need to use to help people so this is the kind of thing youll see now as this crisis develops and deepens. Everything has changed. Reporter phil suarez has been a paramedic for 26 years. Listen to him say how theyre entering almost every house these days. Every home you go into now, you go in with goggles, a gown and a mask on . We do, yes, we do. I look at surfaces and i can almost visualize coronavirus. The cdc has issued a travel advisory telling everyone living in new york, new jersey and connecticut to avoid all nonessential travel for the next two weeks. New yorkers have been told that when theyre traveling to rhode island, theyll be stopped and asked to quarantine. The governors of oklahoma and texas are now telling travelers from other states that have hot spots that if you enter our state, you are ordered to selfquarantine for two weeks. Understand that executive orders that i issue about travel is keenly focused on one main goal. And that is to reduce importing covid19 into the state of texas. One of the main hot spots this morning continues to be new orleans, louisiana. They have 3,500 cases in louisiana with at least 151 deaths. One of those who died was 33yearold april dunn, a member of the governors staff. We have case growth thats on the trajectory right now that puts us in grave danger in about a week, ten days, not having the Ventilator Capacity we need. Reporter to michigan now where the number of coronavirus cases is doubling nearly every three days. Detroit is converting its Convention Center into a 900bed medical site. In illinois, officials are investigating the death of an infant infected with covid19. The governor says he is still waiting for thousands of ventilators that he asked the federal government to send his state. Were not relying upon that. Were just out in the market acquiring any piece of ventilator equipment that we can. Reporter over the weekend, californias governor said his state received 170 ventilators from the National Stockpile, but they were broken so hes hoping to get them repaired and up and working today. Tony, in the conversation i had with louisianas governor, he said, david, we dont want to get into a fight with anyone, but we are fighting other states for the same resources and he said im simply trying to prepare just like i would for a hurricane. And thats what this is. We need to prepare. And its a fight, david. Thank you very much. In spite of that fight, in spite of everything were doing to slow down this virus, it is still outpacing the Resources Available to treat it. And that led President Trump to xepd the governments social distancing guidelines. Weijia jiang reports from the white house where the president recently gave up on his target date to lift restrictions. We had a an aspiration of easter. Reporter President Trump says he was simply being hopeful when he repeatedly touted reopening the country by easter last week. But when you hear these kind of numbers and you hear the potential travesty, that was an aspirational number. Reporter according to dr. Fauci, 100,000 to 200,000 americans could die from the coronavirus. If we do not mitigate to the extent that were trying to do, that you could reach that number. Reporter fauci and others cautioned against lifting restrictions too early. The president already has a new timeline. We can expect that by june 1st, we will be well on our way to recovery. Reporter mr. Trump also questioned why some hospitals are asking for so many masks. How do you go from 10 to 20 to 300,000 . 10 to 20,000 masks to 300,000 even though this is different. Something is going on. Where are the masks going . Are they going out the back door . Reporter President Trump also claimed hospitals may be hoarding ventilators, but theres no evidence for either claim. The number of confirmed cases nationally has risen dramatically up almost five times from what it was a week ago. For cbs this morning, weijia jiang, the white house. Doctor deborah birx is in the white house. Shes at the Coronavirus Response coordinator working on this pandemic. Its very good to see you. I think many people were very relieved that the president decided to extend the deadline. What exactly did you all see that made you know that, listen, april, while it may have been aspirational, easter, it was not a good idea. What are you seeing that convinced him to extend it . Were constantly integrating data from the Global Pandemic as well as whats happening in the United States. And we can see in italy that as you flatten the curve, the duration at the top of the peak lengthens also. And so we can really project as best we can about whats happening in new york to the rest of the country. Certainly were hoping that there arent more new york cities and new york metro areas around the country. But we have to plan for that and we have to really tell the American People that they have to do more to stay inside, to wash their hands, to social distance and to assume that other people are infected, even if they look asymptomatic. Doctor, what exactly do you need to see . Because its gone from midapril to the end of april. What exactly do you all need to see that will let you know its okay to lift social distancing . So by the time youre seeing cases in the hospital, we believe that it has gone from 5 to 50 to 500 to 5,000 and potentially even 50,000. Thats the part we dont know. How many asymptomatic cases are there . Thats what were going to be working on in the rest of the country that doesnt have these huge metro hot spots, to be able to do surveillance at the same time were supporting the metro areas and other areas to do full diagnosis and treatment. You know, we keep emphasizing social distancing. A lot of people still are not getting this memo. Theyre still on the beach. Over the weekend, we saw churches in florida where the ministers were saying, were not going to be intimidated. They are shaking hands. The congregation is shoulder to shoulder. Do you think we have to have an official federal mandate because just asking people does not seem to be working in many places. Well, i think the president s made it clear what the guidelines are and the expectation that every state and local government will look at this closely and do two things. Ensure that supply into their population and prepare every region, every county, every hospital for a contingency plan if they get this kind of doubling of five to 50 to 500 to 5,000 to 50,000. We want every place in the United States prepared for that. So its a critical that even if you dont see it, it could be circulating in your community. The president also still seems to be questioning the request for the number of masks and the number of ventilators. We just heard him saying weijias piece it goes from 10 to 20 to 300,000. He says where are all the masks going . Are you questioning what the hospitals are saying that they need . I think whats really important here is to look at all aspects of the supply chain. What does each hospital have and how are they being supplied . Are they being supplied by the private sector or are they relying on the premovement of the stockpile that went into warehouses . It doesnt help any of us, and i know everyone realizes that, to have supplies there and not reaching the hospital. And i think thats the piece we have to get that piece right. And were looking to make sure that the hospitals are too busy to define what they need. Its our job collectively, the state and local governments, along with us, to ensure that the hospitals are receiving the supplies they need. Is it concerning to you, though, that the president seems to doubt what governors are telling him that they need . I think were watching every single piece of data extraordinarily carefully. And well be able when this is over, well be able to really have a flu pandemic plan that really takes all of this into account. Where we can actually predict what the needs were. The stockpile was created to predict what the extra need was. Clearly, there wasnt enough in the stockpile to really meet the needs of all of america. And so, really, increasing the manufacturing, that has happened, and making sure for manufacturing to hospitals, that this is happening. That hospitals are getting what they need and thats what were working on every day. All right. Dr. Deborah birx, we all know this is all hands on deck. Thank you for your time. Anthony . Thank you. Thanks, gayle. A growing number of doctors and nurses say the pandemic is stretching our Health Care System to the brink of disaster. Our National CorrespondentJericka Duncan has talked to Health Care Workers on the front lines. One doctor says he was actually fired for speaking up . Im no different from the next person. Reporter and at the end there you just heard from dr. Arabia mollette. To give you perspective for how real this is for some of the doctors, dr. Mollette said several people in her family have contracted covid19, including her mother who is a nurse. She says her mom was in the hospital for two weeks. Thankfully, shes now at home recovering, but this is what these nurses and these doctors are dealing with. Not just trying to save the people who come in there, but knowing they, too could be affected and then hearing their loved ones are being infected all while this pandemic is happening in realtime. Maria mercader, an awardwinning producer, died yesterday at a hospital here in new york. She was 54 and had worked at cbs news for more than 30 years. She was director of talent strategy, but to us she was much more, a friend, a valued colleague, and an inspiration. Well remember her life and career in our next hour. Tony . So hard to process right now. I know we are missing her together as one family even though we are physically separate. In fact, couldnt even visit and its difficult to mourn when you cant see a process through. But well have much more to say on that in our next hour as we process it. Thank you. And as the country works to keep the overall death toll down as far as possible, the battle against the virus has reached a new milestone. The u. S. Army opening its firstever Field Hospital in new york city, first in memory anyway. Only on cbs this morning, we went inside that new hospital at the javitz Convention Center with army chief of staff James Mcconville. He says what happens in new york could be a model for the whole nation. We will win, right . Winning matters . Beat the voyeurs. Reporter general James Mcconville has seen heroism before as a veteran of the wars in iraq and afrg. In a war against an invisible threat reporter the fight against covid19 is unlike any mother his long career. Kind of interesting when you take a look at it. The heroes in this fight are going to be the doctors, the nurses, the scientists and the medical professionals we have two Hospital Centers reporter we met up with the general as he got a final briefing and tour of the new javits medical station. We are no stranger to doing response reporter its designed to handle noncovid19 patients, freeing existing new York Hospitals to expand their fight against the virus. We are able to manage patients from routine all the way to the most severe depending on the equipment that we have. Reporter mcconville says the playbook could be used nationwide. Army corps of engineers are in every single state. They are working with the state and local officials. They have done 181 assessments of preexisting facilities like this so we can rapidly stand up hospitals, and were working with fema, and femas providing the equipment reporter you say 181 assessments . Wow. Yes, 181 assessments of preexisting structures, some are arenas, some are hotels, and the intent is to quickly turn them into some type of Health Care Facilities to give the states options, to give them additional capacity in their states. Reporter with half of its Field Hospitals now dedicated to the fight against covid19, the army could soon face staffing shortages of its own. How do you staff these hospitals to fight covid while maintaining the armys capability for the outbreak of war . Well, we do it with very careful management. You know, were managing risk. We know what we have. We know what we have available. Reporter would that be calling up volunteers . New recruits . We have. We have called up volunteers. But we have in the regular army right now what we need to protect the nation and defeat any anyone that wishes us harm. Reporter the hospitals are part of a wider u. S. Military effort to beat back the virus. The armys providing medical support, logistics planning, Vaccine Research right. Reporter if things become severe, can you foresee a future where the army is enforcing a possible quarantine . I i dont think so. I mean, what i see is the army is here to protect the nation, not the to police the nation not to police the nation. We dont have that type of order. We have not been asking to plan for those types things. I wouldnt say thats so. This is a place thats literally going to save lives reporter starting today this hospital can help save about 1,000 lives at a time. By next week youll have 3,000 beds . Pretty incredible. Reporter mcconville says the army is here for the long haul. The armys vision or mission is any adversary anywhere, any time. Thats right. Reporter i guess you do mean any. Thats right. Were here to protect the nation. And right now as the president said, our nation is threatened by this invisible enemy, this virus. We will defeat it. Hard not to believe him there. There are nearly 600 active duty medical personnel and support staff at that medical station. They are working with more than 350 medics and nurses. Now consider this the army is officially a resource of last resort. Its used only after city, county, state, and civilian federal resources have been exhausted. This is truly a major milestone, anthony, and many of the medical personnel there have dealt with combat injuries, but they say its no different treating civilian injuries, medicine is medicine, and theyre some of the best in the world at it. Yeah. Were really glad that theyre there for us right now. We need them. Certainly here in this city. Coming up, the nations biggest stockpile of medical equipment is not large enough to meet the needs of the coronavirus pandemic. According to its former director. Ahead he tells us why it was not at full capacity before the outbreak. You can also subscribe to cbs this morning on the go on your favorite podcast platform. Well be right back. There are new concerns we may not have enough masks, gowns, and ventilators to fight the coronavirus. The former director of the largest u. S. Stockpile of medical supplies tells us there is not enough inventory to meet the needs of the doctors and the nurses. The u. S. Has already dipped into the strategic National Stockpile. Katherine herridge spoke with greg burel about that. Reporter greg burel retired in january after 12 years as head of the strategic National Stockpile, the 8 billion supply of medica equipment, drugs, and protective gear. Can the stockpile support the needs of american hospitals . The strategic National Stockpile is the last lifeline. It doesnt have everything and unlimited resources. Reporter the began san tapping that lifeline shipping supplies across the country from government warehouses. Their locations kept secret for National Security reasons. With officials providing cbs news this recent video. It would never have been possible even with virtually unlimited funds to supply everything thats going to be needed for this event from the strategic National Stockpile. Reporter the stockpiles biggest deficit may be ventilators. An official with health and Human Services confirmed to cbs news there were 16,600 ventilators before covid19. Now there are thousands less as officials anticipate a surge of new cases. Ventilators are very expensive to purchase. So its not just the question of buying one of these many thousanddollar pieces of equipment but how to package that correctly so it can be used quickly and keep those in good shape for sending them for maintenance. A heavy lift. Reporter another complication in response to the 2009 h1n1 pandemic the stockpile deployed nearly 20,000 pieces of personal protective equipment and masks. We didnt seek the funds to replace the masks and the antivirals for h1n1. Reporter while the new stimulus package earmarked 16 billion for the National Stockpile, burel says hes still on edge. My concern Going Forward is its going to be hard to prepare for a second wave or for a future need in this area. While the supplemental Appropriations Congress has provided are wonderful, the question is how do we sustain that further investment for the future. Reporter in a statement to cbs news, a Spokes Person said theyve made targeted purchase of protective gear. And with additional testing, officials determined some older masks and surgical gowns are still good to use. On the lack of ventilators, the fda issued an emergency use authorize that allows certain devices including anesthesia gas machines to be modified and used as ventilators in health care settings. I thought at least 1yearold i thought at least 1yearold teddy perhaps, hes a baby, just a little guy, hes not going to realize this is happening. Then another stroller went by the house the other day and a baby there was cooing and googoogaing, and teddy whipped his head around. Six feet of distance, but nonetheless i know exactly how those kids were feeling. Even 1yearold teddy knows how they were feeling. Exactly. Im getting texts if people i havent im getting text was people i havent heard from this months. And every time i get one of these, im thinking when am i going to see this person again. Its a question that just lingers in everything we do, you know. No, i thought about this, anthony. You know, my favorite son, favorite daughter are in los angeles, and i thought when oprah, of course, is in california. I thought, when am i going to see you guys again. None of us know the answer. We just know that we have to get through this. And i believe that will do that. Weve got to hang in there. Coming up, james corden on his prime time special. The latest timeline to slow the coronavirus and how hospitals are dealing with being overrun. Survivors saving lives or they hope inside a promising new treatment. Were all in this together. James corden says, well look at his new social distancing special. But first, heres todays eye opener at 8 00. Federal stay at home guidelines have been extended until at least the end of april. What are you seeing that convinced him to extend it . Certainly were hoping there arent for new york citys and metros around the country, but we have to plan for that. The president says the resources are plentiful in arriving but in new york there seems to be a disconnect. Leaders and icu nurses saying were not getting the masks we need. The doctor said several people in her family have contracted covid19 including her mother who is a nurse. Here in the uk the death toll has reached more than 1200. This sober assessment from British Health officials. Things may not be back to normal for another six months. Cabin fever has people getting quite creative. This is a trick shot through the house. Off the pots and pans. That triggered the dominos sending another ball down the handrails off the tarp of the front door and then cereal boxes. Helps it get to the stairs and look at this. A couple of hits and celebration ti time. This mornings eye opener is presented by toyota. Im always fascinated by how they do that. Welcome back to cbs this morning. Take a look at our new normal. We are coming to you from each of our homes this morning. I am in my family. We are practicing social distancing out of an abundance of caution like many of you are doing right now watching us this morning. We were all hoping it wouldnt come to this, but here it is. The most important thing is we continue to bring you the news, which we promise we will do throughout this crisis. Tony . Yeah. Youre in your family room. Im in my basement. The most important thing is we continue to bring you that news. Lets begin. This is where we start this morning. More on the virus. Heres the latest. The u. S. Reports more than 143,000 cases of infection. Thats more than any other country. That number grew more than 300 in the past week. President trump has extended social distancing guidelines until the end of april. Thats a change. You recall last week he suggested the crisis could be over by easter. And the fda has approved a new method to sterilize masks that doctors and nurses can use up to 20 times each. The technology is designed to preserve vital protective equipment that is in desperately short supply. Last night on 60 minutes a new york told said how quickly the coronavirus can progress. Within hours they walk into the hospital talking, go into an urgent care and 12 hours later theyre on a ventilator fighting for their life. Is that unusual . Very unusual. We dont see that course and progression like this with any other disease we deal with. Patients who have been infected with the coronavirus and have recovered could be the key to fighting the disease. One potential treatment uses the antibodies built up in the blood of patients who have had the illness. We see how testing is already underway. What were doing is monitoring these patients very closely. Reporter this past weekend there was a supervision of a treatment they hope will be the first proven therapy tens covid19. Blood taken from recovered patients contains antibodies that can attack the virus. The team transfused plasma, the part of blood containing the antibodies into critically ill patients. Have you discussed a goal for how many people youd like to treat a day using this method . As many as possible. Reporter the doctor is watching to see if the transfusion works. It may have helped in a small number of patients in china, but much more study is needed. A kindergarten teacher, a covid19 survivor, has donated her blood to possibly be used in a similar transfusion in new york city. I am one of the survivors. Its a tough ride. I got very lucky. And it was a way that i could give back. A lot of it is going to depend on the donor pool. Reporter a team at new york mt. Sinai will be using the same treatment just performed in houston. Why do you think this might work . We have some idea partially from the 1918 influenza pandemic that taking blood plasma from one person and giving it to another may improve outcomes. Reporter antibodies against coronavirus are not only being used for treatment. They also help identify people who may have been infected without knowing it. An aggressive testing regimen who find out who has levels of immunity is an opportunity to get back to the new normal as soon as possible. Reporter an International Bio tech company is one of several companies to develop a rapid blood test for covid19 antibodies to see if someone has been infected and built up immunity. Their current plan, test as many of residents of a town as possible. How many people do you think youll be testing . Theres just under 8,000 in the county. Well be able to find out who has been exposed and has antibodies and who has a certain level of immunity to this. Reporter once the Antibody Test is more widely available, researchers will be able to screen large numbers donors to be used for treatment. I dont think any center across the country is going to have any trouble recruiting donors that have recovered from covid19. These are incredibly generous people. And the doctor joins us from home now. John, why is it so important to do widespread Antibody Testing . Anthony, you know, its very likely that there are a lot of people out there who have been infected with the new coronavirus but had little, few, or maybe even no symptoms at all. And this is going to help us to get our arms around it. This is hugely important. If it turns out those people that some immunity, some protection because of these antibodies, now depending upon how much protection they have, maybe they could go back to the front lines again and we wont have to make this choice between do we save the economy or do we save the Health Care System . Now, a lot of questions here. How protected are people . How long will the immunity last . There are a lot of questions and a lot fewer answers right now. John, how soon after patients get these plasma treatments will we know if its working . You know, in china there was a report of just five patients in china who had this done. And they had other therapiether. Its hard to know. Over the next week or two, they seem to get better. We dont know if it was the antibody treatment or other medications they were getting in the past. Back in 1918 in the pandemic flu, there was some success and there were cases here and there. Theres never been a huge controlled trial to see exactly how this works and in what people it works and for how long it lasts and things like that. This will be an opportunity to do that, anthony. All right. Still something promising. Thank you. Ahead, how chicago is preparing for a potential surge in coronavirus cases. Well talk with the commissioner of the Citys Department of Public Health. The medical history of the baby who lived in chicago was not immediately released. The commissioner of the chalk department of Public Health joins us now. Doctor, good morning. Thank you for being here. Good morning. It seems like we constantly have to recalibrate our sense of risk when it comes to the coronavirus. At first it was only people in the upper bounds of age and then it was middle aged people as well. Now this tragic news about a baby there in chicago. What more can you tell us about this infants case. So i can tell you its very unusual to be seeing a case like this. Obviously were doing a thorough investigation, working really with the family, our hearts go out to them, the pediatrician, the medical examiner, the cdc, really wanting to make sure were doing confirmatory testing, looktion at everything underlying it. I spent a lot of time yesterday on the Facebook Live that i do every day in chicago really putting into the context the risk, still where we look across the world, across populations. Its a tragic situation here in chicago. Were obviously concerned about it. But by and large, the main risk does remain in the older populations, the folks with the underlying medical conditions. What we dont want to see, we did see in chicago, people bringing in healthy babies to Emergency Departments worried about their health. Thats not what we want to see. We do want to make sure were keeping this in perspective even while were doing the full investigation. Its important to know. It is a saving grace that so far, at least, it appears this virus does not affect children and infants and this is an outlier case. But cases are surging there in chicago and we know as the virus makes its remorseless way across the county, no city, state or county will be spared. As you see the surge, talk about the steps chicago is taking to bend that curve down. Absolutely. We have a very strong stay home save lives campaign. Weve been tracking every day here, were at about 2,000 cases or so, chicago residents, about 4,500 across the state. Were working very hard to do everything we can to keep the spread down while we prepare the Health Care System. Weve got the hotels if place for isolation. Were doing lots in our congregate settings, working with the jails, with homeless communities, working with our longterm care facilities. Were working and even looking at Surge Capacity in things like mccormick place, our largest Convention Center, not waiting until the time where we run out of capacity to try to build it. Weve been working at the Health Department to distribute hundreds of thousands of masks in the last few weeks, gloves, all the other equipment that weve had on hand here as part of our planning for a pandemic. We really do look to the strategic National Stockpile at the federal level for even more support around things like vernt laters, things like these supplies, certainly more needs still for excepting capacity here. Our numbers are what they are i just wanted to make up on that point about working with the National Stockpile. The coordination between state and federal and city officials all across the country, it seems to be marred by lapses in communication. The federal government will say they sent thing. The State Government will say it hasnt gotten there. Can you talk about the communication process and the yord nation going on from where you sit . So, yeah. I can tell you, first of all, we have a strong citylevel Emergency Preparedness program that has been informed over the years with good work between the states and the federal government. So were not waiting for support from any external source. Like i said, were using a lot of the plans and stockpiles we have here. Weve put in requesting. There are pieces. Certainly were working closely with the state. Where we see, for example, the army corps of engineers is helping to do the structural billed out at mccormick place. Weve gotten some indication that well receive some supplies which is really important. Were really thankful for any ventilators in particular that were able to be getting because we, again, you cant make ventilators out of nothing. You need them here when you need them. As were thinking about what does it look like to staff up some of these, especially the external care site, want to make sure its part of a National Framework for planning. Doctor, a veteran out of break fights in liberia and overseas and now leading the fight on the front lines in chicago, thank you very much for being here. Thank you. Thank you. James corden will host a unique variety show james corden will host a new variety show from his garage. Youre watching cbs this morning. This morning cbs news is mourning the loss of one of our own to the krocoronavirus. Mar maria mecater was unique. She battled Health Problems for decades and used her deep faith and enormous smile to light up and inspire others. She was the best of us. Maria mercaders career at cbs news spanned more than three decades. She rose from page to an Emmy Awardwinning producer who helped guide coverage of some of the biggest stories. Her last role as a talent executive may have been her most fitting because maria was always a guiding spirit, a shining lights. Ingrid ciprion mathews was a close friend. No matter how dark the day, maria brought in the sunshine with that heartwarming smile. She was born in 1965 in new york city. Her father, manuel, was in finance on wall street. Her mother, gladys, was an accomplished pianist who spent her career touring with the american ballet theater. Maria adored her mom who inspired her lifelong passion for the arts. Exuberant, intelligent, and fiercely loyal, maria was a cheerleader for so many at cbs news and beyond. Even while quietly dealing with Health Troubles herself. Over 20 years, she survived multiple battles with cancer without an ounce of selfpity or complaint. Dr. Valerie rusch was her surgeon at memorial slo sloanketteri sloankettering. She had an incredible drive and perseverance. I also saw her be a great patient as advocate for other Cancer Patients and cancer survivors. Two years ago, maria took a grand trip with her father, brother, and sisterinlaw across europe and north africa. After all her health issues, she was thrilled to have this adventure with her family, still determined to get joy out of life. Maria mercader was one extraordinary woman. And to so many of us at cbs news, our friend, our confida e confidante, our hero. Boy, you got the news yesterday, guys, and it was so hard to believe because she has certainly rallied before. We were hoping this would be the case. Still hard to believe that were not going to see her anymore in the building. It just shows that this virus does not discriminate, and this one is personal for us, live, this is a kpix 5 news morning update. Reporter after a wet weekend we will see mainly dry conditions for today. There are a chance to see isolated showers for the far north bay. This morning, cloudy conditions, cool conditions, temperatures are runnings in the 40s and the 50s. This is a live look with our Treasure Island camera this morning. Partly sunny skies today, spotty shower possible for the north bay. The chance to see an isolated shower for the north y otherwise welcome back to cbs this morning. Its time to bring you some of the stories that we call the talk of the table this morning. Just that were all coming from different tables, as you know. Were coming from home. We each will share a story with each other and all of you. Thats our table tatalk of th. Were rolling with it. Tony, youre up first. Hey, well, since were doing this from home, im doing something close to my home. A reminder that when you get outside of medical workers who are doing heroic work on the front lines, there are a lot of other workers doing essential things for us and putting their own lives at risk at the same time. So my talk of the table is about amazon workers in new york city who could potentially walk off the job in protest this afternoon. Theyre doing so because they want their warehouse in Staten Island to be closed and sanitized. Theres an assistant manager who claims as many as seven workers have been diagnosed with coronavirus. Amazon tells us that those accusations are unfounded, but sources do confirm that there are several positive cases there. The company also says it has taken extreme measures to keep people safe. So this is on my mind because while i dont know for certain, i do get amazon packages, and its likely that they cycle through that warehouse at some point. I want people to spare a thought as we keep in mind the medical workers doing heroic work, there are so many other people while were stuck at home who are doing essential jobs to keep our lives running in some regard. They, too, are putting their lives at risk. We appreciate it. Yeah. And theyre a real lifeline for us. Their volume is surging. So theyre working like crazy. We need those folks. We want them to be safe. Yeah. What have you got, anthony . All right. Yeah. You know, one of the this circumstance where were all stuck at home is forcing everybody, if you want to celebrate something, you have to do it really creatively. So a young woman in los angeles got neighbors in her apartment complex to surprise her fiance by singing happy birthday. Take a look. Three, two, one happy birthday to you pulled off the surprise by delivering notes door to door in the apartment complex. She asked neighbors to come to their windows at 2 30 to sing to her fiance, jason, whos turning 30 years old. She literally put, i think, 76 note cards. She slipped them under the doors to people. Gave them the appointment time. As you heard, people showed up in droves. They were supposed to get married this month. Obviously had to postpone it. This at least was a consolation. I love that, anthony, because i dont care who you are, everybody likes to have their birthday acknowledged. And you think in a time like this, well, im not going to make a big deal about it because there are certainly bigger things. But the fact that his fiancee would do that and the neighbors joined in i think is very, very nice. My talk of the table is james corden. We all know him, the late, late show host returns tonight with a prime time special. Hes calling it home fest. Why . Because he recorded it from his garage. And boy has he got quite the lineup. He says everybody he asked said yes. The late, late show stopped taping weeks ago as a precaution during this coronavirus outbreak. Corden says he needs he wants to remind us all that despite our physical distance, we are all still very much connected. May i just say you have been missed on late night. Im so glad youre coming back. What is your pitch to your guests when you say i want to do this show because youve got a great lineup. So point of view was in a couple of weeks time people are going to need something that we hope is joyful, thats uplifting in some way. Then we started thinking, well, maybe theres a world in which we can really try and show our audience at home that we are all in the same boat really. So we thought, well, if we can go to Billie Eilishs house and then to south korea and bts will perform a song, and well go to tuscany and Andrea Bocellis going to sit at a piano and bring a song. What if we got in touch with david blaine and he could do a magic trick on all of us over the internet. We think could make it feel like we are all together in this notion of being kept apart. Yes, because you know, the thing is, james, this coronavirus does not discriminate. And while we have to maintain social distance, we keep saying you dont have to be emotionally distant from each other. Thats what i like so much about what youre saying. I know that social distancing is what were calling this. Im not really a fan of that. I much prefer the phrase physical distancing. Okay. I think the world has never been better served to be in touch with everybody in your life right now. We can keep checking in on each other all the time. And if we do that and we keep our physical distance but we dont lose our emotional distance, then maybe well get through this. Part of the problem is that we dont know how much longer its were going to be living like this. You know, i think our first sort of crisis or emergency certainly happened in my lifetime. 9 11 or you think about hurricanes or natural disasters or any of those things that have happened, they are a finite moment. And your main conversation is what do we do to rebuild. Its very difficult right now while youre in the middle of it. Thats why i hope that people will find some kind of light and levity in our show tonight when its on at 10 00. How do you not be afraid when things appear to be so terrifying . Theres something to be said for being open to everybody and saying im feeling the exact same spikes of anxiety that you are. And i feel at moments in sadness of it, thats all right. Thats okay. Its okay to have those feelings. And it would be odd if none of us were. And actually, once you embrace that feeling and you start to put your mind into a place of i wonder who else might be feeling this at the moment, and maybe i should check in with them and give them a call and see if theyre all right. I cant wait for the day to come when i can bound into your studio in new york and see all of you. And you know, i can give you a big hug. Thats what its made me feel, that there are so many things that ive taken for granted in all of this. I was going to see yes. I was just going to say, i realized, i used to enjoy being home by myself. Now that im supposed to be at home by myself, i find i rather dont like it, you know. All the stuff ive taken for granted. I think thats the only way to look at it really and know that its going to be difficult. My son is 9. And i see it in him. The anxiety of not being at school. I said the other day, why dont we have a code word to use which is just when you want me to know that you might be struggling with this. And ill know that thats when we can go off and sit together and put our arms around each other and talk about it. How is home schooling going for you at the corden house . Home schooling is an up at dawn prideswallowing siege. Thats what it is. I mean, i have never had more respect for teachers. Ive never had more respect for what goes on in this house when i leave and go to work. I am never, ever going to come home and complain to my wife that i might be tired ever again. Last week you would have celebrated your fifth anniversary. You took us back to that first day. I really couldnt be more honored to be stood here talking to you now. And believe me, however shocked you are that i am doing this job, you will never be as shocked as i am. [ laughter ] how are you feeling five years later . I mean, look, its been the most glorious, unexpected ride. In many ways, this enforced break that weve had right now has made me appreciate it more than ever really. And its made me appreciate the show that we get to make and what a privilege it is to do such a thing. Once thats kind of taken away in the form that you know it anyway, you really start to think, man, i love that place. I love that job. And i absolutely refuse particularly after this to take a second of it for granted, you know. Well, nobody is shocked that james corden is doing this job now. He says he wanted to create a show tonight that would cross all generations, something that everybody could watch. And anthony, i thought about you, i got a kick out of this because weve all seen his parents who are, you know, over the age of 60. He said his dads says he plays saxophone in the church and he was still going to go to church and play. And james told his dad, no, dad, you cant do that. Like your daughter told you, no, dad, you cant go to the gym. My kids told me, no, you cant go to fair way and get orange juice. The kids telling parents stay at home. Stay at home. They are the enforcers, gayle. They are the enforcers. I cant believe its been five years already for james corden. I know. I know. And not only that, five years but his first guest was tom hanks. His first guest was tom hanks. I was going to say its five years for his show, but it feels like five years for all of us working from home, living with people in the closest of confines. I think he said when this is all over, hed like to bounds into our studio and give us a big hug. I think the country would like to bound out of their homes and give everyone else in this country a big hug. Whenever this is all over, cities all across america better plan one heck of a party. Streets should be closed, and we should be all outdoors hugging, kissing, taking our shoes off. Im looking forward to that, gayle. Oh, me, too. And you know what, guys, it hasnt even been that long. Shes released a netflix special and was profiled last night on 60 minutes. Shes out with a new podcast, unlocking us, about why being new at anything is hard. Brene brown joins us from houston. Good morning. Welcome. Good morning. Thank you for having me on. The theme of your First Episode is about navigating these first times. And boy are we all dealing with a lot of the them. First time im broadcasting from home. But you believe these are kind of critical learning moments for all of us. Why is whats your advice for dealing with it . I personally am not comfortable like everyone else with first times, but i think theyre incredibly important because we get to applies especially as adults where we stop doing anything that were not already good at. And that discomfort and vulnerability and awkwardness of being new is really the juice. Its the lifeblood for us. And the more new things we lean into, the more new things were willing to try, and thats thats growth for us. And when we shut that down, we stop living. We stop growing. And so unfortunately, we were all collectively hurled into this first time. But there are things we can do to make first times which are often pretty terrible better. I feel emotionally drained. I feel spiritually drained. I think a lot of people are feeling this during this time. And you say when you named the hard things, it gives you power. What do you mean by that . I dont feel a lot of people feel that they are powerful at this particular time or even feeling theyre in power. Yeah. I think, you know, my favorite definition of power is from Martin Luther king jr. He said power is the ability to effect change. That simply. What i mean by owning it is when were in grief which i think were all in collective grief right now, when were in grief, when were in fear and anxiety, a lot of us have this myth that if i name it, if i say that out loud, it gives that hard feeling power. When the truth is it gives us power because we put a handle on what were feeling. And so i do think most of us feel very powerless right now around covid especially. But to be able to name what were feeling helps us move through it and helps us say, okay, this is normal. I mean, we are we are both trying to grieve the loss of normal and also at the exact same time find our footing in a new normal. And thats a big ask of us individually and collectively. Hey, theres a great moment in the amy poehler movie wine country where you play yourself and some people come to your table at a restaurant. And you lecture them on boundaries. You draw the boundaries like this, with all these people working from home and dealing with family boundaries, how do they go about gently drawing the line and saying, hey, this is my space and my time . You know, i got to tell you, like for me and my family, its my 20yearold whos, you know, used to living by herself off at college that has been shes shown me the way this time because she is the down and said, you know, heres whats okay, and heres whats not okay. And so i think checking in youre like, i know you love me and youre happy to have me home, but heres what works for me right now. And we are all just asking each other, you know, heres whats working, heres whats not working. But the minute you shut down the communication about what you need, resentment is a really festering thing when youre sharing space involuntary with a lot of people. So i think asking for what you need is great. All right, brene brown, thank you so much for being with us. Unlocking us is available on podcast platforms. Well be right back.
