Governors in massachusetts, colorado, and North Carolina are now the latest to declare states of emergency. The measure comes as philadelphia reports its first death from the virus. That brings the death toll in the u. S. To at least 32. There are more than 1,000 confirmed infections. In Washington State, family members are on edge after 21 residents at a nursing home tested positive for the virus. Thats the same facility where most of the deaths in the state have occurred. In california passengers continue to disembark from a coronavirus stricken cruise ship in oakland. Theyll be quarantined at military bases or sent back to their home countries. And just outside of new york city a growing cluster of confirmed cases in new rochelle prompted the establishment of a containment zone. As meg oliver reports, the National Guard will be deployed to disinfect the area and deliver supplies. This is literally a matter of life and death. Reporter new yorks governor announced unprecedented action, calling in the National Guard to try to prevent the spread of cronavirus with a containment area in new rochelle, population nearly 80,000. Considered the epicenter in this state. Theyre among more than a dozen states under a state of emergency. More than 100 schools or districts in the u. S. Are now closed. Its devastating not knowing what youre going to do last minute in regards to baby sitting and day cares. Reporter they are part of more than 360 Million Students worldwide who are not in school due to the virus. It has impacted us. Obviously we want to make sure everybodys safe. Were complying like everybody else. Reporter Harvard University joined a growing list of colleges from coast to coast canceling classes and telling students to go home. The United States is starting to shut down as millions of americans are working from home. Companies like amazon are advising employees to do so for the rest of the month. The coronavirus is hitting airlines especially hard. American, delta, united, and jetblue are reducing flights. Southwest is expected to lose up to 300 million in revenue. The slow pace of testing for the coronavirus in the u. S. May be hampering efforts to contain the outbreak. According to state results, just over 5,000 patients have been tested in the u. S. Cbs evening news anchor Norah Odonnell asked President Trump about the governments delayed response. Reporter why has the u. S. Been so slow with testing . Other countries have tested tens of thousands no, i think the u. S. Has done a very good job on testing. We had to change things that were done and that were nobodys fault. Perhaps they wanted to do something a different way, but it was a much slower process from a previous administration. And we did change them. We made the changes. But the testing has gone very well. When people need a test, they can get a test. When the professionals need a test, when they need to test more people, they can get the test. Mr. Trumps comments come as the health and Human Services secretary says its unclear how Many Americans have been tested for the virus. Dr. Jon lapook reports. Reporter health and Human Services secretary alex azar said as of this week america has ramped up its production of coronavirus tests. 1. 1 million tests have been shipped out to Public Health laboratories and private labs and hospitals at this time. Another one million tests are available to fill orders or are being shipped. Reporter according to a data base looking at state results, just over 5,000 people have been tested in the United States since january 20th when the first positive case was detected. In comparison, south korea is now doing more than 10,000 tests per day. The Administration Still has not explained why it refused to use a test created by the World Health Organization weeks ago. By the end of february, 60 countries had reportedly gotten test kits from the w. H. O. But the centers for Disease Control reportedly decided to create its own version as the virus was spreading. No one is answering that right now, and i am really frustrated with that. Im frustrated that it happened. Reporter and without knowing where the positive cases are, Public Health officials are hampered in their efforts to track and contain the virus. We are only going to get on top of this outbreak if we know who is affected and able to quarantine people rapidly. Reporter some state Health Departments say theyre worried. Weve only received two test kits to date. Reporter on capitol hill, cdc director dr. Robert redfield was asked about the nations capacity for testing. Weve underinvested in the Public Health theres not enough people not enough equipment, people, not enough internal capacity. Reporter wider availability of testing will make a huge difference for clinicians in their ability to make a correct diagnosis. And it will also make a big difference for Public Health officials who are trying to get their arms around this crisis and come up with the best strategies to try to control the outbreak. Cbs news is projecting that biden won at least four of the six states that held contests yesterday. The former Vice President won missouri, mississippi, idaho, and the key state of michigan. Bernie sanders won michigan four years ago. Washington state is still a tossup, and were waiting for more votes to come in from north dakota. Biden now has 820 delegates in the state contests held so far. Sanders has 670. 1,991 delegates are needed for the nomination. Laura podesta has been following all the results from here in new york.
