Were hearing about Community Spread now and not just direct contact. The problem with the virus and why were getting excited. Why are you so worried about this. Its not killing anybody near the flu. For two weeks you have the virus and you can spread when youre asymptomatic. You can go to the Movie Theater if you dont have symptoms and there are a few number of kids in the United States doing testing. Were seeing four cases with no known contact with virus individuals but were testing almost nobody. So the number of cases is much, much higher. We havent tested them. Is that changing . The testing . Are we going to see more tests . I hope so. The cdc will release more tests next week. Theyll allow hospitals to develop their own tests because were sorely lacking on the testing front in the United States now. In most places around the world, its getting worse. In china its getting a little bit better . Well, china put in a quarantine that is awesome. You cannot leave your house. You cannot go to school. You cannot go to work. You cannot go to work. Quarantines work. Were going to have quarantines in the United States of america in the next week or two. Its not if but when and where. Itll happen. Its goi of. Well be safe. But this is how were going to control the virus from an exponential spread. You call this the new normal . This is the new normal. Were going to have a different way. You know, were no longer going to go like this anymore. Were going to go like this. We wont be shaking hands. We wont be con grating in large groups for several months. Starting monday, the schools in japan, the entire country, are closed for a month. Thats the new normal is Online Education for kids. And so we have to look at it differently. The delivery men, pretty soon it will be a drone so nobody touches your packages and we wont have transmission of disease. Wow. Im curious, you know, in the real world out there, folks have all sorts of scenarios going on in their head. Friends are coming to visit from italy and other countries. Are we going to see a clamp down on who might be able to enter this country . So, theres a new policy. Nobody from italy is allowed. Yeah were going to start to see policies like that. Is it going to be highrisk regions. Not just other countries but here. San francisco is on quarantine. We dont want people from San Francisco to travel to los angeles. And were going to have a new normal, you know, to do that. So are there ways we can prevent just the spread outside of thequantine . I mean, peof, like, grab a bunch of groceries, throw them into the basement, and live, you know, off the lets take a step back. About a third of coronavirus colds are coronavirus. Its a common virus. That picture, that graphic here is amazing. In the 60s when they first identified coronavirus, they saw the projections and said thats why its called coronavirus. This is a new strain of it. That is spread dramatically. It causes lung inflammation. Most people get over it fine. 80 of people have mild symptoms. The elderly, people who are tobacco smokers have a more aggressive course. To remind people, though, if youre traveling, if youre out and about, to michelles point. User elbow. What can people do to prevent any germ spread. Alcohol wipes. They work. The mask. You know, use the mask backwards. If you cough, cough into the mask so particles dont go in the air. Its not to protect you from viruss, which can go through the mask. If you are sick, your child has a runny nose. Stay home. Even if you dont know if its coronavirus. It doesnt matter. You stay home now. We have to protect not just ourselves but our community. I want to change, i mean, i think this is going to make Community Focus first a new way of thinking. Very quickly, doctor. If a lot of people are thinking about vacation plans, european vacation, a cruise. Should they do it . I feel like im going to debate. It depends where it is. We need to be aware. We dont know what is going to happen. Next month or two is critical. Everyone is saying should i travel . Do not travel to a highrisk area. Other areas its fine to travel to now. Im flying home on united to los angeles today and im not worried. All right. Doctor, thank you very much. Uhhuh. Reporter it was the egyptians who first made that leap around 2500 bc. It wasnt until Julius Caesar the calendar began to take the form we know today. The julian calendar in 46 b. C. , to first to add the leap day every four years. It wasnt quite right. That lead to the gre gor began calendar, which set the leap year pattern weve used since the 16th century. Some think its high time for another big change. You guys have been working on this calendar for how long . Decades so far nothing. Reporter enter dick henry and steve handke, professors of Johns Hopkins university. And the biggest current backers of a brand new calendar. One that eliminates leap years. It standardizes the days and weeks to always be the same each year. January 1 is always on a monday. Forever. Forever . Forever. Reporter in addition to starting every year on a monday, the calendar would set your birthday and the holidays to the same day of the week every year. Except october 31st, which along with all friday 13th, would vanish. In place of leap years, every five or six years, an extra week is inserted at the end of december. Sort of an extended christmas vacation. Variations of this idea have been discussed for more than a century. To no avail. Theres no such thing as perfect calendar. You think its better than what we have now . Ours is very close to perfect. We have current calendar every year the thing jerks around by a day or two. And think how many people around the world and smart schedules and all the things that jerk around. Reporter but arent quirks and part of the human existence. You can make things worst and you can be happier. They cost a lot. Reporter they said their calendar is more efficient ca evenly divides business quarters. They say it would save on average everyer year. Co a time. Got 5hangapnd right. General efficiency. Its real. If its real, why do you think it hasnt changed until now . People are in a rut and its hard to change your thinking. Reporter besides ditching leap years, they also want to eliminate time zones. Its implemented for all the airline pilots. They better because if theyre flying across the mississippi river, they dont want to change their watches by an hour and change the watches. Its ludicrous. I wish you got passionate about this. Look im stuck on this planet with the rest of you i see us having a silly system here that is costing us. It may be costing us money, the question is whether a new calendar would cost us some of our identity. Either you can see the calendar as this sense of how the universe works or see it as a human product that really represents the contributions of people over thousands of years to try and incrementally improve our knowledge of where we are. Does it make sense to get rid of a leap year or leap second . Calendar changes, people, i think are resistance to because it means the infrastructure of how we live our lives. The earth doesnt care what day you call it. It knows where it is. Its going around the sun doing the thing it always does. And i just want to know where is the earth in reference to the sun right now . When the earth stops going around the sun, thats a problem. Yeah. Weve been debating it since yesterday. The biggest thing most people get hung up on is because your birthday is on the same day of the week. Yeah. I dont like that. Yeah. If it is on a tuesday and my brothers birthday disappears on halloween. Not happening. Same metric system. Its basically made from corn, soy, the commodity crops that is 60 of our indidiet in america. Six out of ten americans have an illness caused primarily by food. Its fixable by food. Is that diet the typical diet because of money . We like the flavor . Well, its a consequence of good intentions back after the war when we funded the production of a large amount of agriculture. It backfired because the food were producing, ultra processed food, is making us sick and overweight. 42 of americans are overweight. And we actually are having an enormous cost from that for our society. The cost to our economy. You know, one in five dollars in economy is for chronic disease and health care, you know, one in three medicare dollars is for diabetes alone. So we have this huge epidemic driven by food and fixed by eating a different diet. We didnt have bad intentions but now we have to fix the problem. Youre practically screaming in your book, mark. Were dying unnecessarily. Were not paying attention. What do you want us to do . What should we be doing . I mean, have to Say Something to get peoples attention here. Of course. So the beautiful thing is that the cost to our society is the cost to our children, cognitive function. The cost to our economy. Our national security. We can change our own way of eating. To eat more whole foods. It sounds like something we heard before but it actually works. Vo while other candidates argue about health care, Mike Bloomberg has a record of doing something. And one sport that is coming into fashion. Well see where more and more girls are stepping into theingo new opportunity took hold. Thats all ahead. But, first, our top story this morning. More suspected cases of coronavirus are being reported here in the United States. Overnight Health Officials in washington, oregon, and california reported a total of four new cases. However, in three of those cases, doctors do not know how the patients were infected. So far, 16 cases have been detected and confirmed in the u. S. Another 47 people were infected in china. And on the diamond princess cruise ship and are being treated in the United States. Fears lead to another selloff on wall street. The dow jones dropped 357 points. Federal reserve chairman Jerome Powell said rates, to bolster t economy, if needed. President trump gave a glowing review of his administrations response while criticizing the democrats. Theyve tried it over and over. Its all turning. They lost. Its all turning. Think of it. Think of it. And this is their new hoax. But, you know, we did something that has been pretty amazing. Worldwide more than 83,000 people have been infected with a coronavirus in 53 countries. More than 2800 people have died. Voters in South Carolina go to the polls today as the races for the democratic president ial nomination heats up. The stakes appear to be particularly high for joe biden, the former Vice President joe biden who did not finish first in iowa, new hampshire, or nevada has repeatedly called South Carolina his Campaign Fire wall. Its the last contest before the coming super tuesday. Thats when voters in 14 states cast ballots and onethird of the National Delegates were securing the nomination are up for grabs. For more on todays primary and the march to delegaterich super tuesday. We are joined by anna palmer and coauthor of politics playbook news letter. Thats a mouthful. Good morning. Glad to see you got the memo. The memo. I love it. So a new poll has joe biden ahead of the democratic field in South Carolina. Is this make or break for him and ift is, where does he go from here . The stakes could not be higher for joe biden now. Hes trying to resurrect his campaign. If he doesnt finish a strong first, i think that its going to be very hard for him to make the case that super tuesday is going to be big for him and to his donors to keep supporting him. What does he have to do on super tuesday . I think thats the question that they are being outspent in terms of money in the big states and in terms of ground game. Can they use this firstplace finish in South Carolina to boost him to, you know, some of the other states . Bernie sanders now has a healthy lead in the delegate count. I heard some people say its bernie or broker . I think when you talk to democratic operatives, they are more and more certain a broker convention is what were going to see in the coming months and preparation happened for that. Theres a lot establishment democrats who dont want Bernie Sanders to be the nominee. The other things you hear is, if it is a broker convention, what is the answer in who is the person with bernie that would give Middle America a reason to vote for the democrats instead of donald trump . He hasnt given us any look into what he is looking for a Vice President ial nominee. Who he might pick. I think the question is going to be can he coalesce and bring the establishment in with him but right now theres no stopping him. He is the forerunner in this race. Is it surprising to you that nobody else has sort of backed out . Absolutely. I think if you look at history now there would have been many of the candidates, amy klobuchar, for example, tom steyer would have had the momentum and backed out. They have not. They are going to continue through super tuesday. There hasnt been the coalescing of more moderate candidates. Interesting watching the markets now. Generally speaking when the economy is strong, president s are reelected. We saw the dow take a dive this week. Largely on fears of coronavirus. A lot of people said if donald trump campaigned on the economy, he would be sailing to reelection. Can he stave off the downturn . What is in his toolbox in terms of the coronavirus to make people feel and make the markets feel that he has control of the celebration . Many months ahead before our election in november. Anna, thank you. Tomorrow morning on face the nation margaret brennans guest including Bernie Sanders. Its about five minutes after the hour. Now here is a look at the weather for your weekend. School day brought it out and from there stepping took off. Williams launched step africa in 1994. After hosting a festival celebrating the election of Nelson Mandela in post apartheid south africa. It wasnt wild time but it was young, excited. Wanted to do something different. Wanted to bring these two cultures together. Reporter but his visit four years earlier that truly set the stage. Im there in 1990, studying and working. Thats where i saw the south African Dance and it looked so much like stepping that i had to kind of do more research on it. What did your Research Find . I found it was an art form created by men who worked in the mines of south africa and it was just like stepping. An instrum in 25 years, williams has taken stepping global. Touring 49 states and more than 50 countries. Its even got its own interactive exhibit at the National Museum of africanamerican history and culture. And every four minutes, a young person can learn how to step with step arfrika. Its resonating. In the last two decades, stepping made its way into music videos, including a beyonce routine. Theres even a movement to bring the platform to ncaa team level competition. Just about everyone tries to get in on the act. Keep it up. But on this circuit, artistic director mfon akpan joined 15 years ago. Its the rhythm within your body and your soul. What happened was the drum was taken away . It traces the deepseated roots of stepping to an event in 1739 called the rebellion. About 20 men rose up near the stone wall river in the colony of South Carolina. They were using drums as they went along. They gathered people. By the end it was maybe a hundred people. It lasted just a few days but the backlash prompted even harsher slave laws. Recognizing the power of the drum in this direction, the colony became as the negro act. We want to be free they restricted reading and writing and gathering. They restricted traveling and thats the other thing. Most importantly in our story, they restricted the use of the drum. And the drum is so tied to african culture. So tied to it. When that was taken away, the body became the drum. Reporter the drum has come full circle for step afrika. What are you surprised about . What blew your mind on the journey . For years i wanted to step in the white house. It was like we need to be in the east wing under the chandeliers and make the chandeliers shake. When barack obama was elected, i was like, okay, i might have to make a move. Reporter it took eight years, but in february of 2016, williams wish was granted. Step afrika made it to the east room and the art form of slaves was performed in the house that slaves bill built. It was absolutely incredible. You got it on film . Oh, yeah. On my iphone. I shouldnt say that but yeah. Yeah. We got it captured. Was the chandelier quaking . Quaking [ cheers and applause ] and you know it did. You know, it is touring starts the new vick theater it goes until march 15th. But believe it or not, the coronavirus might halt part of that tour internationally. A century of fashion illustration is being celebrated at a new exhibition here in new york. And Anthony Mason is here with the story. Good morning. Full disclosure, the story is personal for me. My late stepfather worked for magazines like vogue and town and country. One of his drawings is included in the exhibition of society of illustrators here in new york. Fashion illustration, of course, was usually commercial work but these illustrators also had an art of their own. An art that the exhibition shows is alive and well. Bill donovan knew what he wanted when he saw Audrey Hepburn sweep into the room in sabrina. To me, she was a swan floating across the floor. I wanted to draw it. Reporter donovan now artist in residence at Christian Dior beauty has drawn for vogue and vanity fair. Hes cocurator of the new exhibition fashion illustrators. The visionaries. At the society of illustrators in new york. What do you see in these . I see passion i just see the love of line and color and shape and energy and flair. Putting all those pieces me, t poetry. Reporter the exhibit looks at a century of illustration. Starting with early giants like Karl Eriksson who worked for vogue for more than 40 years beginning in 1960. And rene bouche who sketched many cbs greats but best known as a fashion illustrator. The greats all had a distinct style like this todd drawing from the 1950s. I mean, look at the feathered hat. Its chaotic, its energized. Its one of my favorite drawings. Reporter for joe, halstons creative director who dashed off this sketch of martha. The brilliance of it. The spontaneity. The energy. You can feel her dancing. You can feel her moving. Women illustrators were rare in womens fashion but Barbara Pearlman broke through. I love this piece because shes striking shes staring right back at you. Reporter some of these became stars. Most are stars. Most are legendary. Almost every person we selected has a legacy. Reporter like glen tun ston who made his name in the early 70s. And i found people recognized me. Uhhuh. I would even get fan mail. Reporter you dont know how they knew. I dont know. But they knew. He was a pioneer. I was there as the first black ill traitor. Reporter was that your dream job . Yes. I think it was everybodys that was a fashion artist. Reporter what makes a great fashion illustrator . Its the fluency with drawing where by not only can you draw what you see but you can easily exaggerate. Reporter is it drawing what you feel . And drawing what you feel. Reporter you bring your personality, your selfinto it. The commercial options for illustrators have dwindled with photographers replacing them on the runway and magazines in decline. Reporter is the Magazine Market pretty much gone . I dont want to answer that. Reporter fashion illustrator sara singh. It exists because people want to the do it and i want to do it. Reporter why do you want to do it . Because its fun. [ laughter ] ive had it ever since i was little that i need to draw. Its an addiction. Reporter she works quickly in ink will scan her illustrations and alter them in the computer. Shes drawn for vogue, el decor, and tiffany and shows her work on her instagram page. Be when you get your work published online its up forever before it ends up in a dentists office. You can appreciate it. Yeah. Appreciate it. Reporter she said bill donovan is one of a new generation of illustrators keeping the craft alive. A lot of people dont take this seriously as art. But i bet you see it as art. I see it as art and ive seen it as art. Its a special form of art that doesnt exist anywhere else. My intent is to capture a moment. When a woman walks into a restaurant, shes beautiful. And she quietly turns over her shoulder and gives a glance. Its so alluring. Thats what i try to capture. That essence. That spontaneous moment that happens. Theres an intimacy that is created when youre drawing live. I think people want some of that back. Reporter its so interesting what happened to fashion illustration. Its become theres a new sort of interest in it in part because its disappearing, to some degree. Its like the photographer is helping bring it back because its so unusual now. It is almost new again. Yeah. It runs through march 7th. By the way, that place is like a hidden gem of new york. You go up the stairs and there are book and magazine illustrations from the last 50 years. Its a fabulous el w y felt when yo stepfathers it froaw i g them. To the left of that front door here theres drawing of edward that is by rene bouche who we mentioned in the piece. I knew who it was because my stepfather told me. Im like thats the guy he told me about. I had the connection to this thing, which is fairly unusual. But it comes from being surrounded by this. My stepfather was drawing all the time. I cant believe theres any question as to whether this is art. It is such a beautiful way of capturing a woman. As you said, you get that emotion and its your emotion youre bringing into it. People think of something as commercial cant be art but all of these illustrators had an art. Yeah. Oh. Glad to have you, Anthony Mason. Nice to be here.
