Chief Justice John Roberts and senators who will serve as jurors were sworn in yesterday. This is the third time thats ever happened for a president. Meanwhile mr. Trump insisted he doesnt know lev parnas who worked with Rudy Giuliani. Parnas who faces unrelated federal charges now claims more of the president s aides knew about efforts to pressure ukraine to investigate political foes. Reporter well, the trial resumes in the senate on tuesday and senators will have to figure out at some point how to handle all this new information. Republicans say it shows the house didnt do its Due Diligence while democrats say it shows that the white house is still covering up the truth. Reporter hours before the senators signed their names one by one in an oath book the Government Accountability office found that the president violated the law when he withheld more than 200 million in military aid to ukraine. The california Highway Patrol says a wrongway driver was killed early this morning in gamble. Investigators say the driver was going south down in the northbound lanes of highway 17 when she collided with another vehicle between interstate 280 and hamilton avenue. Another fatal crash, this one happened last night on highway 101 in san jose. Chp says the vehicle involved in the crash cart fire and at one point was engulfed in flames. President trumps impeachment trial will put a spotlight on another powerful government figure, the chief justice of the United States, john roberts. He was sworn in yesterday to preside over the senate trial. The third time in history a chief justice has performed that role. How he navigates his political and partisan fight could have a profound impact on americans view of the federal courts. Jan crawford is outside of the Supreme Court. Jan, good morning. For the next few weeks hell being leaving this place and go across the street to preside over a very different, very partisan trial. Many speculated that has got to be his worst nightmare. You will do impartial justice according to the constitution and the laws so help you god. I do. Chief Justice John Roberts who will preside over the impeachment trial was sworn in yesterday. He then gave the oath to senators who will decide mr. Trumps fate. Opening statements are expected to start tuesday. There is still no agreement on calling witnesses to testify. The swearing in followed a report saying the Trump Administration broke the law by withholding security aid from ukraine. Thats according to the Government Accountability office, a nonpartisan watch dog. The administrations delay of nearly 400 million approved by congress is at the center of the impeachment trial. This morning tony is with one of the senators who will hear evidence in the impeachment trial, Amy Klobuchar. Thank you, michelle. For at least a couple weeks. How is that going to affect iowa . Youre fifth in the polls right now. 17 days before the caucus. But rising. Granted. 17 days before people go to caucus. Are you going to lose momentum by having to be here for a senate trial . Absolutely not. I have a fantastic operation with people who are incredible in every major town in iowa. Ive got my husband and daughter o you the this weekend in New Hampshire and then on their way to iowa. Im going to be there for three days. I am a mom. I can do two things at once. Youve been staking your campaign there on your presence. Sometimes doing nine events in a given day. Yes. Now youre going to be at a trial that starts every single day at 1 00 six days a week. Youre going to be shuttling back and forth . It is my constitutional duty and when i can go campaign in the early states including nevada and south carolina, i will. But when i have to be there, i will. One of the great things about having these early states is the voters get to know you and i think theyll understand that i have a constitutional duty to be there. We can skype in. We can phone in. We will have, i have more endorsements in the state of iowa, legislators, farmers, than any other candidate in the race. I have people out there helping me right now and we just picked up a new endorsement in New Hampshire including the Deputy Speaker of the house. Lets get one question in on impeachment and then go back to iowa. The big question is are there going to be witnesses . Do you get a sense as someone who has worked with republicans and you know republicans very well behind the scenes do you get a sense there are some colleagues across the aisle who will vote for witnesses in this trial . Yes. They have said it publicly. Senator romney made it very clear. Have they said it privately . Yeah. Senator romney made it very clear he would like to hear from john bolton, one of the primary witnesses, because he was the gatekeeper for the president S National Security information. I think the gao report that Government Accountability report that michelle just mentioned on your program is really interesting because that was a Nonpartisan Group that said that he had basically broken the law. Thats a nonpartisan agency. So youve got that. And every trial weve had in history has had witnesses, tony. You cannot have a trial without witnesses. And right now were just asking for four witnesses who have unique information about the president holding back aid to a foreign country. So lets jump back to iowa and the campaign trail in 2020. Youre fifth right now in most polls. Among the people youre trailing are Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders who have staked out more progressive positions in the party. I was looking at a report just this morning that said the average family is or the typical family is actually poorer today than they were back in 2000. Life expectancy in this country is falling. People are not hopeful their kids are going to do better than they have done. There are big problems. And yet youve got this more moderate position. Are you out of step with maybe the progressive vision that is working for thaes othese other candidates . Well, no. What isnt working so well for so many families is Donald Trumps policies. You have basically every day he boasts about how great it is and then you have so many people where its still really hard to afford prescription drugs. I have been the leader on that in the senate. Or its hard to send their kids to college. I have different proposals than my colleagues. I think they are more practical yet progressive. And the difference between a plan and a pipe dream you can actually get a plan done. I have passed over a hundred bills as a lead democrat. I know how to do this. And i have a record of winning in suburban and rural areas. A lot of these issues, though, in america have developed over democratic and republican administrations and a big one is wealth inequality. The top 1 has more than the bottom 90 . They have 40 of the wealth. Just three of them have more than the bottom 50 . So youve been edging up to supporting a wealth tax to try to Fund Programs to help everybody else. Could you say today that you support a wealth tax . Well, ive always said im open to that. I just want to make sure you can get it through legally. But there are other things we can do, tony, that are much more concrete. Repealing parts of the republican tax bill where the president went down to maralago and said to his friends, hey, you just got a lot richer. There were a lot of people in america that were not in that room. And so doing that, taking the Capital Gains rate and bringing it closer to the personal rate, closing the loopholes for hedge funds, close goto loopholes for oil giveaways. You can literally get over a trillion dollars by making concrete changes. Ive showed how i am going to pay for every single thing i want to do from helping with k12 schools on and i think thats really important to have a president , someone that doesnt just have pie in the sky ideas but actually shows how theyre going to pay for things. So two quick questions. Were running out of time here. Your ideas are similar to biden and buttigieg and yet you trail them in the polls. I just went up ten points in New Hampshire. Four points behind the vice president. Whos counting though . So make the case for yourself against a joe biden who people see as similar ideas and also moderate here. I am from the heartland. I grew up in minnesota. My grandpa worked on the iron ore mines, 1500 feet underground, saved money in a coffee can to send my dad to community college. My djoe biden is from pennsylvania working class guy. I am from the middle of the country and that is where we need to win, states like wisconsin and michigan and minnesota, iowa and pennsylvania. I think i have you look at my record. I am the one that just won 42 trump counties in my state. 31 counties in iowa went to barack obama and then trump. I have the record, i actually have the receipts. I won in those counties. No one else on that stage people talk about it but no one el has led a ticket where they have won repeatedly in rural and suburban districts and brought in independents and moderate republicans. Ive done it. One question on sexism. After the 2016 campaign i talked to Hillary Clinton and she told me her debate experience with donald trump was imbud with sexism. Her word. She has a whole file on sexism in politics. On the campaign trail and in this 2020 election is sexism still a problem for you . There is no doubt there can be double standards about women in politics but we didnt have that we would be able to name our favorite woman president. We cant do that because we havent had one. What do i think . Im proud to be a woman candidate. I would be so proud to be the first woman president. But i am running on my merit and that is a point i have made repeatedly. When i have won really tough elections against tough opponents. I have done it by making the case that i am accountable. That i get things done. I have peoples back. Ev len yang the wife of democratic candidate andrew yang revealed for the first time she was sexually assaulted by her gynecologist when she was pregnant with her first child back in 2012. In an interview with cnn yang said she kept the assault a secret and did not even tell her husband about it. In that interview she described what d. I was confused and then i realized what was happening and then i just kind of froze. Like a deer in headlights. Just frozen. I knew it was happening. I remember trying to fix my eyes on a spot on the wall. And just trying to avoid seeing his face as he was assaulting me. Just waiting for it to be over. Yang finally told her husband many months after their son was born. She said she decided to go public now after being moved by stories from voters she met on the campaign trail. Yang wants to use her platform to help other women. Evylyn and 31 other women are now suing the man who allegedly assaulted her along with Columbia University and its affiliates. In 2016 he pled guilty to two charges and lost his medical rns license. He was required to register as a sex offender. He did not go to jail however and denies all allegations except to the ones he pled guilty to. Andrew yang released this statement, quote, i am extraordinarily proud of evelyn for telling her story and my heart breaks every time i think of what she had to experience. In a brain scan of a preschooler often read to you see the red colored areas showing growth in what they call organized white matter. This is areas related to language and literacy. In a scan of a preschooler who spends an average of two hours a day playing on screens, the blue color shows what the researchers say is under development and disorganization of that all important white matter. In addition, children who are frequently read to by their care givers scored higher on cognitive tests. It is not just a pretty picture. It also has an impact in the real word in terms of ability to use expressive language and the like. For the first time we are hearing now from a texas woman who was convicted of murdering her husband, a decorated fire captain. Robert poynter was shot in the head while sitting in his wifes jeep on a rural road in 2016. She told police she called for help after the jeep got stuck in the mud and claimed he was shot by an unknown man who emerged in the dark. When Police Responded to her 911 call body cameras captured what happened. 48 hours spoke to chaycey in her first tv interview. On september 9th, 2016, a desperate 911 call triggered a Swift Response from the royse city, texas police department. Okay. Calm down. Reporter Police Body Cameras captured the moments after the caller chaycey poynter dialed 911. Whats going on . My husband. My jeep is stuck around the corner and hes been shot in the head. Please. I i reporter Sergeant Shane meek tried to make sense of chayceys story. Tell us what happened . I heard a shot. And the jeep started rolling and i didnt see anything and i thats all i was it your husband . Whats his name . Robert. Robert poynter. She told sergeant meek she called her husband robert a decorated fire captain after her jeep got stuck in thick mud. Thats my husbands blood on me. As soon as that shot he slumped over into the passenger seat. Chaycey is telling her story for the first time. When im awake i see his face. When im asleep i see it. It hurts. Reporter that night sergeant meek had a hunch that chaycey knew more than she was saying. Some guy just happened to be standing in the shadows of the trees to step out and shoot this guy point blank in the head with a gun just didnt make sense. Reporter later, at the police station, chaycey was confronted by detective michael burke. I think youre full of crap. Im telling you i dont know who pulled the trigger. You see i think you do. Reporter this is the prosecutor. This is a case about sex, lies, money, and murder. Uhoh. A texas tale. And videotape we have to say. And that body cam evidence was key. Why were cops cosuspicious . What did it say . Well, first off it is where this killing occurred. It is on one of these farmtomarket roads in texas. Theyre not made for cars to go down. The big wheel tractors, track vehicles like a tank can make it down but not a car. And somehow she had driven the family car down there, called her husband who she planned to meet in town at a jack in the box and said, come help me. Im stuck in the mud. He gets out there and somehow a stranger comes out of the bushes and shoots him in the head. Stopped at the wrong bush. Yes. I mean, it is not a laughing matter. It is a very suspicious story. Absolutely. Also the way she behaved on those various cameras. This pant talking she did constantly. The investigators believed that was all an act. At times when they would leave shed stop. Come back and shed begin again. So it is a fascinating unraveling of this murder. We cant wait to watch. Thank you so much. You know, the immigrant stories of america, it is not monolithic and we need to hear it again and again because it inspires us. Food is such a great way, such a delicious way of learning about another culture. Right . Like i cooked all my life but through no passport required i was lucky enough to have nigerian food that i wasnt that familiar with or armenian food in los angeles. These amazing cities have also these surprises. I didnt know that the second biggest immigrant community in seattle was filipino, for example. I didnt know that the west African Community was so big in houston. America is a nation of immigrants, i guess its true, so i guess were a nation of immigrant food. Is anything excluded from what can be on the show . No. As long as its delicious and there is a story ill go there. Its such a privilege to also see america, right . We go in, were in all types of cities and places and you start to see, when you read the menu, like oh, my god. These are traditions, rituals, sometimes 2,000 years old. On monday when it airs on pbs we are in l. A. In glendale and the armenian community, and theyve done that in his family, alone, each man has been the master for 300 years going. Wow. And coming to l. A. , the city of dreams, setting up the same thing. Thats american to me. Thats very inspiring. So many cities, their foodie tradition, theyre on the map now because of immigrant cuisine. I think of london. I think of San Francisco to a large part. But why do you think thats the case . Well, because we all add something. Right . And sometimes, you know, immigration, really, food, sometimes its a big war. Sometimes its a disaster one part of the world. But very often, people still dream about coming to america. And when you come to america, very often the first job, the first entry job can be for hospitality. And maybe their vision was for the kids to go to college. Well guess what . Sometimes its hard to get a job. Well we know how to cook. We know how to take care of our culture and cook for each other, so the Hospitality Industry is very often the first entry point. You know, america is better for it. You said a couple years ago there is a big false narrative about immigrant work ethic here in america. Has that changed do you think . First of all, i dont to say that immigrants are lazy, nothing can be further from the truth. Immigrants work really, really hard. Theyre super proud to be in america. First of all, also, they escaped three wars, four or five Different Countries just to get here. Theyre probably just as patriotic as you and i are. If not even more.
