I think they got him. Still a traffic mess in oakland tonight. In the last half hour, all lanes of interstate 880 reopened after a big rig crash. The crash is now cleared. Its going to take a while there to recover. It may have started a collision involving two other cars. Amazingly there was only one minor injury. Now at 7 00, bay area vaping giant juul is under new scrutiny tonight. Andria borba on a new bay area study that found juul vapes are more addictive than other ecigarettes. It all comes down to the nicotine inside those juul pods that they say is addicting kids and teens at record numbers. This series of machines inside a lab at the university of california San Francisco is how dr. Matthew springer tests the effects of cigarettes and vaping products. Dr. Springer says the latest study out of the lab is revealing about juul. Juul has a lot more nicotine. And this is one of the things that makes juul hook kids. They figured out how to jam a lot more nicotine per puff by acidifying it so its easier one five times the amount of nicotine as regular ecigarettes. Juul has figured out how to absolutely overdose kids with nicotine. Its incredible. Reporter the study found no matter the delivery system, juul, ecig, or cigarette, its all having the same effect on the cardiovascular system. If you look at the amount by which the blood vessel function goes down, its roughly theam as cigarette or taken a cycle of apcigarette v inthey know plenty of people who say vaping is healthier than smoking. I think thats really sad that people are still doing it and that they dont know what theyre putting into their bodies. Reporter dr. Springer says the health risks are the same across the board. If you breathe in smoke, the aerosols, the vapor, you can still affect your cardiovascular function. Reporter in a statement to kpix 5, a juul spokesperson says the goal in designing the amount of nicotine in the pods was to help smokers quit cigarettes. Providing a similar experience was a priority. In a study late last year, ucsf researchers also found that people who use vaping products are more prone to chronic lung diseases. The new antiviolence czar says cutting violence starts with a Community Health approach with Community Policing and community service. Its not a perfect science but he says its been a successful formula in other troubled cities. It starts by identifying risk factors. The risk factors that lead people to commit violence and those risk factors could be economic. They could be psychological. They could be familial. They could be pressure in the community. There are a lot of risk factors that push up to act in a particular way. We identify those risk factors and addressing them. Thats where our hope and future lies, is to disrupt the upstream factors. The city of oakland has a pretty ambitious plan. They hope to reduce homicides by 80 in the next three years. By the time we get into wednesday, its still going to look like theres a storm in the area, maybe a few clouds. Probably one of those days that looks pretty after the storm clears out. The possibility for a scattered shower on wednesday cant be ruled out. It wouldnt be much if anything if we got it. Those are the rainfall totals from the first one. Thats the tuesday afternoon through midnight rain maker. Less than. 1 of an inch of rain.
