It is a new year and maybe this is the year you kick start your finances and make the move toward Online Banking. Kpix5s jackie ward is in the studio with us this morning to tell us what to be aware of before making that switch. Hey, jackie. Good morning. Yes, i am not the financial expert but cbs news Jill Schlesinger is. I asked her what the pros and cans were when talking about traditional versus Online Banking. Her answer may surprise you. I cant think of one con for Online Banking. I really cant. Reporter for jill its all about the security and convenience you get with Online Banking. First of all, when you bank online, youre probably using better security and better security systems. The number 2 thing is that you can automate so much of the way that you manage your financial life. Reporter jill says many online banks actually have higher Interest Rates than brick and mortar because they dont have to pay the overhead for a physical branch location. I guess that if you really want to walk into a place, in this day and age, that you may be able to find a brick and mortar location that is would work for you, but generally speaking i recommend to most people as much as possible put all of your finances online. Automate everything and keep track of it. Reporter if you need some cash thats okay. A lot of online institutions partner with places where you can actually withdraw cash. But, again, i have to say that in a world where we are using square and the cash app and venmo, i think that more and more the society is moving towards cashless than having cash in your pocket. Online banking definitely has a market here in the tech savvy bay area. I spoke with some people to get their thoughts about making the switch. I personally have Traditional Banking and my friends make fun of me terribly for it. Reporter why have you stuck with the Traditional Bank . For me its something about going into a bank and meeting a person and being able to have a conversation. Considering Online Banking is now the new Traditional Banking, i guess i do Traditional Banking. I guess you call me old school. I like going and talking with people and doing that. But there is some sort of definite convenience to doing Online Banking. But i like the personal interaction with people. I think that goes a long way than just pressing some buttons. A lot of you have been weighing in on social media with most of you saying you prefer Online Banking, but only by a slim margin on twitter. 53 prefer online only. On our facebook poll its the opposite. Nearly 70 of people who voted prefer Traditional Banking. Jill is also giving us her financial predictions for not only 2020 but the new decade as well. Here are her top three. A continuation of what we have seen in the last decade and thats the worlds finance and technology intersecting. We used to call it fin tech. Now she says we are just calling it business. Amazon makes a push into Financial Services, we think. We have already seen apple partner up with goldman, sachs. Jill is looking for the moment when Financial Institutions get a little bit nervous. Hyphae Financial Services should go away and are going away. She says she wants to say bye bye to Big Commission broker charges. Jill says she is not sorry to see that go. What do you think . Would you make the switch or do you online bank . I do mostly Online Banking. I love the fact that you can put your debit card into your phone so youre in a situation where you cant get cash. Use your phone. Right. That freaks me out. But, yeah, i do a lot of Online Banking but i dont have my debit card in my phone. Got it. Because then you lose that and i dont know you can use your fingerprint. Would you rather lose your card or dont lose your thumb. Thats what im getting from this. What if you lose both . That would be a really bad day. Jackie, thank you. Kick start 2020 continues all week right here on kpix5. Tomorrow morning jackie will let us know about some of the top travel destinations in the new year with your thumb. Yes. We have our thumbs, gianna. Thumbs up. Or thumbs down to traffic. Which one . Unfortunately thumbs down on 680. We have got this Traffic Alert. No injuries or anything like that but it is a brokendown big rig and stuck on the southbound side of 680 as you commute alamo into danville and that is slowing traffic down this morning. That right lane is blocked. They have got a heavy duty tow crews on scene to help the big rig bet out of lanes that is but taking time. And traffic almost backed up to that 24 interchange. North of there we are seeing brake lights south 680 as you work your way out of oak park boulevard. Pleasant hill, walnut creek brake lights and work your way into danville. South of there in the sunol grade we had a crash at sunol boulevard. Thats now cleared out of lanes but still about 25 minute drive time to go south 680 from the 580 down to 237 and you can see the morning commute is officially on. As we take a live look at the white house from washington, d. C. This morning where Top Democrats are calling on President Trump to declassify the information that led him to order a drone strike that killed a high ranking iranian leader. The Trump Administration says it attacked military commander Qasem Soleimani in response to an impending threat to american lives. Today democratic Lawmakers Said that the white houses notification to congress did not provide legitimate justification for launching that air strike on friday. They are urging the president to make that notification public. Meantime south bay democrat ro khanna sponsored a bill to block funding for any military action related to iran without the okay from congress. He and cosponsor senator Bernie Sanders are urging fellow lawmakers to take up the bill this week. In the south bay over the weekend, hundreds of protesters gathered to criticize the u. S. For its continuing involvement in the middle east. Demonstrators outside San Jose City hall say that recent developments will only lead to more violence. When Congress Returns to washington today, they will also have to deal with the ongoing standoff involving President Trumps impeachment trial. Last month the house voted to impeach the president but Speaker Nancy Pelosi has not sent the articles to the senate and says she will not do so until republican senators guarantee a fair trial. Republican senator Lindsey Graham now says he wants the senate to move forward with the trial even without articles of impeachment. If the president is acquitted through a sham trial, through a mock trial where there are no witnesses, where everything is covered up, that will stand him well with the american people. But if we dont get the articles this week, then we need to take matters in our own hands and change the rules, deem them to be delivered to the senate so we can start the trial. Any change to the impeachment rules would require 67 votes in the senate or a 2 3 majority. An attack on a military base in kenya has killed three americans, one of the americans was a u. S.
