Reporter the game changed dramatically when two American Drones struck the convoy carrying soleimani after he had landed at the baghdad airport. Secretary of state mike pompeo says soleimani was hit because he was planning to kill americans. The American People can know that the decision that President Trump made to take Qassem Soleimani down saved american lives. Reporter iranian officials have called the killing of soleimani an act of war and vowed revenge. Yesterday evening President Trump upped the ante with an extraordinary tweet warning that if iran strikes americans or american assets, we have targeted 52 iranian sites, thats one for each of the hostages taken when a mob over ran the u. Reporter a u. S. Defense official told me just a short time ago iran has brought its Ballistic Missiles to a higher state of reddiness. When i said that sounds like we are on a razors edge he said, yes. Pauley david martin at the pentagon, we thank you. We have asked our seth done to, seth doane to tell i see more about Qassem Soleimani and help us understand his significance to iraqis. He reports from israel. Reporter Major General Qassem Soleimani was an architect of irans influence across the middle east, creating a shiite muslim stronghold in several countries, including hezbollah in lebanon, where one commander warned 35 u. S. Targets and tel aviv are within irans reach. Chants of death to the u. S. He is one of the most powerful men in the country. He is very close to the supreme leader, it would be like killing, you know, the Vice President or Supreme Court justice, i mean, it is huge. Soleimani is credited with employing socalled asymmetrical warfare tactics, using proxy forces to fight for iran, including against israel. How close of an eye did you keep on soleimani . Very close. Amos yadlin is a former chief of Israeli Military intelligence. You could see him in anyplace that iran tried to change the regime or to have a terror attack. You could see him in lebanon with hezbollah, in syria fighting for assad, in iraq killing american soldiers, and in yemen firing rockets to saudi arabia. Reporter yadlin told us he thinks iran is considering three options for retaliation, a strike on the United States which is risky, on an american ally, like saudi arabia or United Arab Emirates or israel, but ultimately he thinks iran does not want allout war, although many in the region feel we are now closer to one. Or so we may have thought until dna testing made Family Matters more complicated than some of us ever dreamed. Our cover story is reported by rita braver. Welcome, come in out of the rain. Hi, richard. Reporter it has been a long and winding road to this family reunion. Amidst the food and fun it a maid me tear up. It made me happy. Reibman and his sister sara reibman are meeting a relative named tom johnson for the very first time. I think we both had very loving parents. Reporter and this is no distant relative, tom and richard and sara, have discovered they are siblings. And it was just shocking, awesome. Where have you been all my life . [laughter. ] reporter it all began when the reibmans cousin, susan gronk did a dna test. So this is what came up. And found that someone named thomas edgar johnson, jr. Seemed to be her first cousin. And i initially thought thats a mistake, because i know all of my first cousins. Okay. This is my very first contact, january 2nd. Susan, who is partially of Eastern European jewish descent reached out to tom. Who was raised a fundamentalist christian of. And already puzzling over his dna results. It said that i was a descendant of Eastern European jews and french. And thats not at all my family that i knew. Reporter soon, susan figured out that tom had been born in dearborn, michigan. He is knew that sara and richards brother herbert, who died ten years ago, had been born there too. As it turned out in the same hospital within hours of tom. A bomb hit, caused the reporr t d 1941, pearl harb. And tom johnson suddenly realized that in what had to be nationwide chaos, he and Herbert Reibman may have been switched at birth. I was in kind of shock at that time, realizing that maybe i had overturned a rock that ths pretty surprising to me, that, in fact, i did have a different mother and father and, than i grew up with. Sara reibman took a dna test too and confirmed that tom is her brother. Reporter how shocked were you . I thought that explains a lot because herbie, the brother who was probably switched, was just so different than we were. And we always kind of laughed about it. It was kind of a joke, you know, where do you come from . This is herbert and i when we were little tikes. Richard calls the discovery bittersweet. He says they love their brother herbert who died without learning the real story. But he also feels there is a reason to be happy. Certainly will enrich my life going forward. I think for tom, it is much more difficult because he didnt grow up with his biological parents, although he grew up in a loving family, but it is different for him. I have an aunt who is only three years older than me, and i talked to her and she said, you will you will always be our family. But, i am really looking forward to knowing more about my real family. Its really a joy to me. Growing up we were german, we danced in a german dance group, i wore liederhosen. Many of the commercials for dna kits make it sound like taking the test might yield some fun surprises about your heritage. A big surprise for us, we are not german at all. In fact, a recent survey shows more than a quarter of those who use mail indna tests discover close relatives that they didnt know about. I took the test. It is not always happy news. It was may of 2017 when the floor fell out from under me. That was the day catherine st. Clair learned it was devastating news. Reporter that she did not share any dna with the only father she ever knew. What i found was that my mother worked for a few months at this store that my biological father owned and i was conceived at that time. And i was raised as my dads child along with my siblings and nobody knew. With both the parents raised her and her birth father dead, st. Clair had no one to ask what happened. Feeling isolated, she started an Online Support group for others in similar situations. Not parent expected is what you call it. Yes, and before you know it we hit 6,000 members. Oh, thank you. The they even have meetups like this one. How are you . Where members talk about issues like the shock of finding out their biological father was not who they thought. Fall let bethel. And now i realize i was feeling betrayal, my mother had this secret. Bradley hall. Were you able to talk to your mother about this . Shes unapproachable about the subject. I discovered anatomy dad was not my dad. Tamera brooks says the hardest part was that the dad who raised her had no idea she wasnt his. I didnt want to tell him, and im sorry. At this point, he was sick. And i didnt want to upset him. You know, there were seven born i am sorry, i didnt know i was going to get emotional. So we are going to go through some phone support training of handling some difficult calls, difficult callers. At Dna Testing Companies like 23 me, so many calls come in from people who make shocking discoveries about that, as they showed us give them some time to process that on the phone. Employees get special training in how to handle delicate situations. Because sometimes people call in just wanting to vent or to have someone listen. Reporter the company Just Launched a new web page aimed at helping people cope with unexpected results. But there are a lot of happy endings. The young boxer in the ring is vidal rivera. The two men watching him are james inge senior and junior. Last year, james, jr. Took a dna test to learn more about his heritage. And was surprised when someone hed never heard of i was in initial like shock kind of. Reporter seemed to be a close match so he called ancestry. Com, the Testing Company he used. I talked to their Customer Service person. And hes funny because he is like, oh, congratulations. This is your brother. [ laughter ]. So i am like, okay. Did you call him first or did you call your dad first . I talked to my dad. He was still in kind of like, what . This kind of misty area mindset, you might say. Did you did the name ring a bell . Did you have a glimmer . I could remember nothing, and i felt really bad because i didnt remember. Like 27 yearo . 27 years ago, that was the eighties, that was good times. Dont remember that. Couldnt remember, like seriously couldnt remember. The but it was just what his newly found son had been dreaming of. Vidal had taken a dna test for one reason only. See if i could get a lucky shot in the dark and see what i have always been looking for, see if, you know, i could find my dad on there. Had you ever asked your mom who your dad was . A million times. And she didnt want to talk about it . Yeah, at times she didnt want to talk about it. I got different answers, things of that nature so i just knew i couldnt keep knocking on that door. But now, these three men say best times, it was a best day. They have formed a bond which will never break. And it asit. What doou say . What would your response be . You just have to get your feet wet and just do it. You cant be afraid of it and embrace whatever you get because, you know, its going to happen. Its just going to happen in its own way. Pauley ahead reddi, willing. Reddiwip. Pauley and able. Pauley and now a page from our sunday morning almanac, january 5th, 1914, 106 years ago today, a day of reddiness if ever there was one. For that was the day dairy salesman turned innovator aaron lapin was born in st. Louis. Lapin developed a way of putting whipped increase into an a aerosol can, and so in 1948, reddiwip was born, when it comes to instant dessert toppings true believers say its hard to top reddiwip. Countless tv commercials over the years have a tout, have touted its merits and reddiwips place in our Popular Culture is celebrated in many an online video as well. Aaron lapin died in 1999 at the age of 85. But reddiwip lives on, particularly today, which in case it escaped you, is celebrated in dessert topping circles as National Whipped Cream day. Pauley hows this for the first in our occasional series we are calling escapes . Its an unusual luxury hotel in an exotic tropical setting. A hotel where just checking this is a heart stopping experience. As ben tracy discovered. A hhhh bill bensley certainly knows how to make an entrance. Oh, my god thats wonderful reporter he brought us here to his new luxury tented camp inside the largest rain forest in cambodia. Guests enter the property by racing down one of the longest ziplines in asia. What is the response from guests when they realize, they show up and they get to zipline into the hotel . So far everybody has done it except for one. Reporter bensley calls this shinta mani wild. He pitched the palatial rooms over a raging river and these socalled tents dont come cheap. They are about 2,000 dollars a night. Bensley says his Design Inspiration was Jackie Kennedy. He created the kind of place he thinks she would have stayed at during her 1967 visit to cambodia. What if the king had brought her on a glamping trip . What would that have been like . What do you think Jackie Kennedy would think of this place. Oh, i know shed love it. His confidence comes from experience. Bill bensley has designed more than 200 hotels in 30 different countries. Hes one of the most famous Hotel Designers in asia. Knowing for the famed four seasons tented camp in thailand, this stunning cliff side intercontinental resort in vietnam and numerous luxury escapes in bali. His work to date already fills 520 pages of an enormous Coffee Table Book called escapism. Lets talk about your style a little bit. Wait a second, i dont have a style. You dont have a style . I want specifically not to have a style because i want the next project to be a surprise. You want everything to be different . I want everything to be different. I have never seen you do concrete and gls and call it a yes, dont call me a minimalist. You will get chucked out if you call may minimalist. I am a very proud maximalist. Actually, maximalist may be minimizing it. Bensleys projects reflect his personality, playful, certainly colorful, and sometimes way over the top. You have been called crazy. Thank you. You have been called crazy sane. Thank you. Do you have a preference . Crazy sane sounds more professional, i think, dont you . You might get more work that way. Not just crazy. But crazy i would imagine goes a long way in your line of work . Of course it does. , yeah, because who wants to go on vacation to a serious place . You really simplified this, didnt you . He is, however, quite serious about his work. At his studio in bangkok, a team of 150 people is currently working on 100 different projects. And no detail is too small or too odd. I need to ask that dealer in sri lanka about two very large peacocks. Bensleys team doesnt just design hotels. Oh, there it is. I was wondering where that went. Reporter they create almost everything inside of them as well, from the artwork that hangs on the walls this is the maldivian cuckoo queen and the maldivian cuckoo king. Reporter to the uniforms worn by the staff. Oh, no, thats fabulous. Oh, i love that. Reporter bensley then fills the hallways and rooms with antiques hes collected from all over the world. He stores them in this enormous warehouse he calls the cabinet of curiosities. Thats our front door over here. Reporter at the siam hotel in bangkok one of his favorite and most famous projects, he built a massive atrium that brings the outside inside. The hotel, which feels more like a very rich persons home, is a black and white temple to thai history. There is Something Like 5,000 antique unique pieces here in this hotel, which is the story of thailand. Bensleys own story began in anaheim, california where he grew up in the shadow of disneyland, after graduating from harvard he moved to asia where he launched his career. He now has lived in bangkok for nearly 30 years. His house is like one of his hotels, a series of elaborate rooms and gardens. Oh, yeah, beautiful red leaf. The 60yearold shares this with his husband jirachi the two have been together for nearly three decades. You work together, you live together, how do you make that work and Stay Together for 30 years . Thats a good question. I didnt are a chicago is the boss and i do whatever im told. The secret to a happy marriage. It looks like we have got some snails in here. They spend much of their time in the garden which is fitting because bill bensley considers himself a gardner first, designing his projects such as the elaborate tented camp in cambodia, around the existing landscape. He says building this is the hardest thing he has ever done, but its a labor of love to protect this stunning forest from being destroyed by the logging industry. It seems it would be easier at this point in your career to kind of repeat yourself. [laughter. ] to take things that worked somewhere and just do it again. Well. What i am really proud about is every single one of our hotels is very different from the next and that no one knows what to expect from me next. Once you start repeating yourself, youre dead. Here we go. And there is no doubt that bill bensley is still very much alive. Good, you look clean. Pauley coming up, david byrne with serena altschul, still on the cutting e e. Pauley from 1985s road toow to his current musical extravaganza on broadway, its been quite a journey for former talking heads front man david byrne. This morning, hes looking back with serena altschul. Reporter take in david byrnes critically acclaimed show on broadway you may ask yourself, where is that and you might ask yourself, how did david byrne get here . You say to yourself my god, what have i done . We are going to take you on a whole journey thats not just a bunch of songs and you are going to have a party, but it is actually going to you are going to be at a different place potentially and intellectually or whatever by the end reporter the show, american utopia, takes its name from byrnes last album reporter for which he developed an innovative and unusual stage show. Reporter drawing on more than four decades of making music reporter and while much of the music is familiar burning down the house. Reporter its clear byrne is marching to a different beat. Burning down the house reporter the show begins with byrne contemplating how a childs mind develops. Babys brains have hundreds of millions more neural connections than we do as adults. Byrne told us why as he prepared to take the stage. They come with all the vocal sounds, and they try them all out, and then gradually they realize these are the ones that mom and dad use to talk to one another. Reporter and if you wondering, well, david byrne is now a granddad. Byrnes only daughter malu byrne gave birth to a son in 2018. So he must be the great joy of your life these days . Hes a lot of fun. How is this going . It looks good. You look clean. No knicks. David byrne himself immigrated to the u. S. At the age of eight with his scottish parents. A felt like a little bit of an outsider but i realized that the world was made up of people that were different but we are all here. Reporter music helped a young david byrne find his voice voice. I dont know why i am living like i do. Even though i was painfully shy, i put myself on stage and performed and do really sometimes wacky things i food fear on stage. And then coming off the stage, i had i was frozen as far as social interaction. Reporter i love the way you kind of described yourself as painfully shy. Its hard to believe. We change. Thank god we can change. This aint no disco, this aint no fooling around. Reporter byrne wanted to become a visual artist but fell into playing music with college friends, Tina Weymouth and chris frantz. That band would become the talking heads. But almost from the beginning the band fought over song writing credit and creative control. If you could kind of time machine back to the seventies and your early days what would you say to yourself . Dont worry, david byrne, its going to be okay. You dont have to panic. Do you feel you were more controlling back then . Oh, absolutely. Beds on fire. Dont touch me. I am a real live wire. You are really tight. Your friends and you are making a living together and all of that. Its just its really high pressure. Run, run away. In certain ways it is just never going to last. Reporter and it didnt. In 1991, weymouth and frantz learned that the talking heads had broken up by reading about it in the l. A. Times, but the end of the talking heads was just the beginning of david byrnes artistic odyssey. He started a record label specializing in world music, put out a number of solo albums and worked with scores of musical partners. I think i am a better collaborator. Now, i give more leeway, i give more, but i think by giving more, i get more. Reporter touring with american utopia, byrne decided to ask the students of the Detroit School of arts to record a version of his song, everybody is coming to my house. Everybodys coming to my house. And we are never going to be alone. They changed the meaning of the song. They changed it for you . For me, i looked at their performance on video and i thought, they brought out a different meaning in the song than when i do. When i do it not quite sure they want everybody coming over to their house but on their version, it is like yes, come on over i kind of liked their version better. We have a lot of people from different parts of the world in this band. I myselfnam a naturalized citizen from scotland. Reporter that happened in 2012 after an unlikely run in at the voting booth. Why do it in 2012 . Because i was busted. I firmly believed that green card holders could vote in elections as long as they didnt vote for president. And i did it. It turns out i did it for many years. See . They were right. There is a lot of voter fraud. Sometimes in one location byrne is passionate about being a good citizen of the world. But like manyas struggled with current events. We have possibility. We can do things. Reporter so he working. The project is called reasons to be cheerful. One fine day reporter is that kind of where you are in your life now . Are you a more optimistic, joyful person these days . I asked myself the exact same question. Am i a different person than i was before . Is my innate nature, joyful and optimistic, or i think this is maybe more likely god help us. That i love working with these m performing, i love what i am doing. I love the message that we are putting across, that that gives me optimism. How would i describe can my side be firm . And mine super soft . Yes with the sleep number 360 smart bed, on sale now, you can both adjust your comfort with your sleep number setting. Can it help keep me asleep . What a housekeeper must tell betty she noticed a few errors, a napkin is out of the place, the butter knife belongs on the butter dish, not and a water glass is missing. Reporter this is table setting. Table scaping adds decoration and a theme. While it is typically not for dinner parties it is an annual event at county fairs all across the country. People have been positioning plates for prizes at the Los Angeles County fair since the 1930s. Brandon boyer white witnessed the competition as a kid. The tables were her favorite part of the fair. They get their own special box. They do. Overman has been in the game for more than two decades. I like doing this, because i have to, i want to win and i want to put my creation out there for people to see. For this years competition bonnie created a table that commemorates the 50th anniversary of disneys haunted mansion ride, she has been working on it for months. It is almost like having a baby and putting the baby out there. It is a lot. Ultimately, it all comes down to the judges. No fingerprints or anything. And the mirror is flawless. I love the height on this one. I think and then the martians coming out. I mean, people are in need of oh, as many as you like. As many as you like. There was one that had like a very miss setup but they had two forks, one knife, but the appetizer was a cheese platter and they had no knife for the cheese. In such a cutthroat competition that would be nice if they had like a knife for the cheese, right . A missing cheese knife can number of paragraphs knock you out of the top spot. He helped expand Health Coverage to 200,000 more kids and upgraded pediatric care infant mortality rates dropped to record lows. And as mayor, Mike Bloomberg always championed Reproductive Health for women. So when you hear Mike Bloomberg on health care. Mrb this is america. We can certainly afford to make sure that everybody that needs to see a doctor can see a doctor, everybody that needs medicines to stay healthy can get those medicines. Nurse you should know, he did it as mayor, hell get it done as president. Mrb im Mike Bloomberg and i approve this message. Pauley . It started when the rescue began posting pictures of terrys catnaps, and he went viral. Were you surprised by the game . Oh, god, pet and brush cats and fall asleep. And i should be world famous for doing this . Oh. World famous and a calendar guy. Even has his mug on a local coffee blend. Reporter delta dawn, just one of the songs that made a legend out of a Young Country singer named tanya tucker. An, we are getting ready for the grammys and what better way to get started off than tanya tucker talking to our bob schieffer. Reporter on a cold and rainy december sunday outside northern virginias birchmere music hall the sellout crowd was lining up five hours before showtime. How about you guys . Some even earlier. You have been here since 640 this morning and we were first. And there inside, tanya tucker was doing what she has been doing since she was nine years old, getting ready to put on a show. Did i go on a tangent reporter after more than 50 years on stage, shes up this month for not just one but four grammy nominations, more than any other country singer. Has it sunk in yet . You know, i dont really think so. It is like, well, you know, its great to be nominated but, you know, it would be nice to win one too in younger days they called her delta would likely know her hits, since the ripe old age of 13 shes had nearly two dozen albumsop t0. 4 thanks for all the number one songs that, you know, you have given me. Oh hell i like the number 10. Trouble in my heart. Reporter he is became Country Musics wild child with a personal life that has often grabbed more attention than her music. Bring my flowers now while i am living. But her latest album has made her the critics darling, and its her music that is making headlines again. Well i got to tell you, i got my marching orders here, i am told, do not ask her how she likes this comeback, because you say its not a comeback. So what is it . Gosh, you know, i like the word relaunch. Relaunch . Yeah, relaunch. It wasnt something that i had really planned out, and it really just kind of happened. Well isnt that always the best way, when something just sort of happens . Well of course, you make plans and god chubb also, you know, when you start making plans. God only knows how oil field roughneck jesse beau tucker recognized the potential in his youngest daughter, tanya denise, born 1958 in seminole, texas. But by age 9, she knew what she wanted and her father was with her all the way. I was ready then but they just werent ready for me. Because my dad always said you are a nineyearold girl. He said, so that means you are going to have to put twice as much feeling in that song youre singing he said because they are not going to believe a nineyearold kid singing you aint woman must have to take my man. In 1970 he is landed an audience with legendary nashville producer Billy Sherrill, still hot after his success with Tammy Wynettes stand by your man. Sherrill wanted her to record a age appropriate song happiest girl in the usa, she was set on another. I started out shes 41 and her daddy still called her baby and i said well now that is my song. She is 41 and her daddy still calls her baby. All the folks round brownsville say shes crazy. Delta dawn is sung from the point of view of a middleaged faded beauty. Producer Billy Sherrill heard bet any her of all people sting it on the tonight show. Yet somehow he saw fit to offer it to tucker. Delta dawn, whats that flower you have on. Could it be a faded rose from days gone by and did i hear you say he was a meeting you here today to take you to his mansion in the sky it is just one of the alltime greats. In younger days they called her the lyrics seemed so improbable coming from a 13rieo keep tanyas age a secret. Reporter that didnt last long and as the hits rolled in, so did the money. The little girl with the big girls voice took on some grownup habits, drinking, drugs, and romance. Do you think in any way any 0 of that hurt your career . You know, it could have. I mean, it probably did in some ways, but in a way, i dont think you could be successful unless you have got, you have had a lot of failures and i have had some i want to the same can be said for her love life. Though she was never married, she has raised her three children as a single mother, and made no apologies for it. Throughout the 1980s she carried on a Public Affair with glen campbell, who was more than two decades her senior. It was the kind of love that i think i probably found it too soon in life and was not mature enough at that time. I think if we had met later on, we would have made it, because it was love there. Like two sparrows in a hurricane. That is just the sort of feeling you hear in her songs, the emotion that has always cut through the tabloid headlines. Maybe thats why tuckers fans use one particular word to describe her. Shes real. Shes the real deal. Shes real, very real. What you see is what you get. Well, you get a lot with her. Yes, you do. Yes, they do. And the more real she gets open for business. The more they love her. Thank you very much. Thank you the rodeo is an old mans dreams. Reporter as it turns out two of tanya tuckers biggest fans would help compose this latest chapter in her life story. In 2018, musician and producer shooter jennings, the son of country giant waylon jennings, rekrutted superstar singer songwriter Brandi Carlile to write new material for tucker. Bottoms up, bitches. But it was a song that tucker had been trying to put on to paper for decades that would with carliles help bring the entire project into focus. Dont spend time, tears or money on my old breathless body. If your heart is in them flowers bring them on. It kind of chokes me up just hearing you sting it because it makes you think of the times you wished you told somebody. Absolutely. Its caused me to make a real effort to try to tell those that i love that i do love them. And even some of those that i dont. You know . And even though one day reporter bring my flowers now is the sound of a more reflective tanya tucker. At age 61, here in franklin, tennessee, she state your names herself with the people and the animals she loves. Jenins, how is my baby boy . She is going to go in the box with me, and of course his daddy, whos already in a little small box. He will go in there with me. We will have to have an extra big box, though because we will have five dogs and two horses. We are going to be together forever. When i die i may not go to heaven. Reporter tanya tucker has packed a lot of living in her time on earth. Tanya tucker. Since she was a little girl, inner voice has been her ticket. Delta dawn, whats that flower you have on. Reporter and her voice has never had more to offer than it does today. Lord knows i am a hard luck girl. You know how to change the world, you build your platform, you build it, build it, until you cant get no higher my father said and thats when you can change the world because then people will listen to you. I dont want to be just another female on this planet. I want to change a lot of things. Well, i think you are going to change people when you remind them to bring the flowers now and thats just another way of saying, show me you love me now. Dont hesitate. Notice how many are looking us in the eye, as if they are counting on us to save them. Some actually look worried. We should be too. Though we forget it sometimes, we humans are animals ourselves. Yep, we are 100 percent primate, just like them, we depend on the Natural World in which we evolved. We must have intact rain forests to produce dependable amounts of rain to grow our crops. We need healthy seas to generate much of the food we eat and the oxygen we breathe and we need pollinating insects as well to bring us fruits and vegetables. The solution is simple but not easy. We must preserve and restore vast tracts of wild lands and oceans now to stabilize the planets life support systems. As someone who has looked so many others in the eye, this is very personal. If we fail, which of these would we choose to loose . The bonobo or the kakapo . The barb barry lion or the lion tailed macaque, the fourstriped lizard or the polka dot poison frog . Each are living works of art, honed by the ages, intelligent in their own way, whether it is the San Francisco garter snake or the san joaquin kit fox, each is deserving of a basic right to exist. Thanks to the web, we can let the whole world know about the biggest threats to do existence and in realtime. And where theres a need, humans love to fill it. You must get off the bench now, though.
