Sit i said sit a lawsuit filed just last a lawsuit filed just last night is drawing new attention to a cancercausing chemical called ethylene oxide. Its used to sterilize about half of all u. S. Medical equipment. Five former educators who worked at the same high school near chicago blame their illnesses on a sterilizing plant that used the chemical. Consumer investigative correspondent anna werner is with us to talk more about why there is this connection or why the women think theres a link. Right. That school is about three quarters of a mile from the plant, and the women believe that plant gave them cancer. Your doctors have told you that they cant cure you. It is not curable. Reporter Margaret Eskey Erdmanis is talking about her terminal blood cancer. I wont see next christmas. Reporter and you dont know, do you . I dont. And your cancer is a form of lymphoma. Reporter the reason for their cancers they say a nearby plant they never even knew was there. For over 30 years, company sterigenics sterilized medical equipment in this building using a gas called ethylene oxide. A chemical known to cause cancer. Unknown to residents, the plant released thousands of pounds of that invisible gas into the surrounding neighborhoods for decades. Former teacher peg vahldieck many of us taught with our windows wide open in the spring, in the fall. Reporter she and former educators erdmanis, rose keppler, carol tufo, and Jeannie Debroeck all say had you ever heard of ethylene oxide . No. No. Reporter what they did notice over the years they say was the number of their former colleagues who also came down with cancer. There were five in the wing that i worked in. In my department, theres six six of us. We need to talk about dont drink the water. Right. Talking about that for years. You know, we needed a reason a reason for why people were sick. Reporter ethylene oxide is used in medical sterilizing plants and chemical plants around the country. Experts have known for decades that the toxic gas could be linked to cancers including breast and blood cancers. But it wasnt until last year that residents in nearly 20 communities around the country found out that by a new epa analysis, their cancer risk from exposure to the chemical might now be higher. The sterigenics plant in willow brook, less than a mile from the high school, became a flash point for protests. It brought awareness and anger. There is a death sentence that youre passing on to all of us. I am as mad as can be. Reporter is that why youre speaking out . Yes. Yes. Im worried about the people do that not know. They need to know your health is at risk. You know, its not only a local issue. Its a national issue. And people are unknowingly being exposed without having to be. Reporter sterigenics now faces multiple lawsuits but told us in a statement its ts confident that it is not responsible for causing cancers. The company says it has consistently complied with and outperformed applicable regulations. Lawyer Shawn Collins who represents the five women insists the company knew there were risks. They were told. Reporter he points to this letter from the illinois epa to the plants former owners in 1984. Warning that when its sterilizes were built, ethylene oxide emissions would be several magnitudes hire than desirable. Higher than desirable. Ive never seen a situation where before a Company Opened its doors it was told if you do what you say you want to do, youre really risking the health of your neighbors. And then it went ahead and did it anyway. Reporter is it possible in your mind that maybe they thought they were being protective as a company . Will. No. Not at all. No. When youve got that in front of you, no. Reporter sterigenics closed its willow brook plant in september citing problems with a lease. Nationwide, more than 100 sterilizing plants still use ethylene oxide. There has to be another way to clean medical equipment rather than poisoning the rest of us in the United States or wherever theyre doing it. Reporter medical Device Manufacturers disagree with that idea. Their Association Advamed told us that medical sterilization facilities need to remain open in order to avoid what they call a potentially catastrophic shortage of critical medical devices sterilized through this irreplaceable process. Both that group and the fda say that if more sterilizing plants shut down right now, there would be a shortage of some critical medical devices. The epa is working on a new emissions standard for the chemical for next year. Meanwhile, some of the other communities, possibly at higher risk, are now looking at this issue. You have 100 erilizing plants in this country. So there are alternatives. Although that group maintains that those alternatives dont necessarily work for all medical devices. They say there are certain things you need this for. But i think the hunt is on for alternatives, and the fda is also Encouraging Companies to develop alternatives. Wow. Matalin is the only deaf performer to ever win an oscar. She tweeted a video of her singing from her seat on a delta signing, rather, from her delta plane. She said it was sad that her flight had, quote, provisions for various languages and audio description for inflight entertainment, but no closed captions for deaf and hardofhearing flyers. Well, delta apologized and said in a statement, most of our aircraft with seatback screens have a wide variety of closed kapgs captioned content. Unfortunately, ms. Matalins flight has not yet been upgraded. From being a delta frequent flyer on, your app you get a lot of the same content. A lot of those have it. St the aclu claims the Trump Administrations zero tolerance immigration policy has led to approximately 5,500 separations of migrant families at the u. S. Border since july of 2017. Manuel bojorquez followed the heart wrenching journey of four migrant families that will have the Network Broadcast premiere on saturday night. It features a 9 year old and his father jose, who have been reunited. Er venn was detained for nine months and separated from his father nearly a year. My father is over there. Reporter he could be any child. Waiting at any airport. You may have passed one and not even known it. The children of zero tolerance. [ speaking Foreign Language ] [ speaking Foreign Language ] and Manuel Bojorquez is with us. Manny, good morning, first of all. Manuel bore bore is wijorqu. This is gut wrenching to watch. The Trump Administration says it ended the family separations but it does not appear to be. Not quite. Officially the policy ended june 2018 but since then estimates show 1,100 children have been separated from their families. The government said in many cases they have to vet the adults, make sure theyre the parent, make sure theyre not going to harm the child, have a criminal record per se. Critics of the administration have said some families are separated over minorittype otion manny, ribe the conditions for the families who have to wait in mexico while they await their immigration hearing. What are the conditions like . I know you have covered it for a long time. Thats the other revolving part of this, is the remaininmexico policy. There are critics of the policy that say many of the families are returned to dangerous border towns where theyre tented up u sleeping, camping out on streets and subjected to many of the crimes they were initially trying to flee from. The government said we want all countries to come together and be a part of the solution there, and thats why they put the program together. As you know there are a lot of critics of it. Manny, what do you think will be the longterm impact on the children based on the families you have spoken to . Theres an emotional impact on all of the children. Many have said they have nightmares, that they still fear being separated from their families. Their asylum cases are still pending, so if the parents cases dont get approved and the parent has to go back, they fear separation all over again. Many of the families dont have the means to get the kids the kind of psychological help that they might need or, you know, e it will be really tough. Really good point, manny. Such an important story to tell. Thank you. Thank you. We will be watching. Yes, we will be watching. You can see mannys report the faces of family separation tomorrow night at 10 00, 9 00 central here on cbs. In less than a week we will be starting a new decade. Ahead, we will remember the people and trends that defined this decade and predict what the next ten years could bring. You are watching cbs this morning. If you see wires down, treat them all as if they are hot and energized. Stay away from any downed wire, call 911 and call pg e right after so we can both respond out and keep the public safe. New york city is getting ready for its annual new years eve celebration in times square, as we get set to ring in 2020 we are also looking back at the legacy of the 20190s, a decade f political and technological change. In the past ten years some states legalized marijuana. We saw a return of star wars fever. Wait, return . It has been around since 1977. We saw mistakes at the cost cars. How do you know . I dont know. I asked someone. We asked five journalists and experts how they think the 2010s will be remembered. The 2010s really was the decade where we flipped the table on the status quo. Dont believe me just watch a truly magical and revolutionary product today. We can change the world. We started the decade with barack obama. So help you god. So help me god. In many ways where were at started with barack obama because the American Voters wanted something totally different and it just became more and more different throughout the decade. I came in like the wrecking ball and we will make America Great again. When you look back at the 2010s i dont know how you dont remember donald trump. We are building a wall. It is all a hoax. He is a sick puppy. He is the greatest show on earth whether you like it or not. 2010 was about reality tv shows. Im not buying a [ bleep ] pair of shoes. I dont give a [ bleep ]. You are trash. You are trash. We ended the decade with a reality tv show. Get her out of here. We started the decade with an economic crisis and we finished with an existential crisis. Everything that happened in the s in this enormously disruptive and frightening collapse of the economy. This was the dows worst oneday point drop. The dow jones average dropping 213 points. It ripped apart a bunch of institutions and norms, and now were kind of asking ourselves what kind of a world do we want. Stop the violence 2010 will be remembered as the decade when the me too movement went global. It felt like all of the set in this issue that had a history of lack of accountability suddenly had a new sense that there could be consequences for this kind of behavior. Time is up. We are no longer going to be harassed. Im responsible for what happens here. The moment that might have defined the arc of the 2010s is marc ducker berg testifying after the Cambridge Analytica scandal. It was my mistake and im sorry. We go from a moment of innovation, amazon, alexa. Alexa, how is traffic. Huber, instagram, the real reckoning about the consequences. Stop apologizing and make the change. Your user agreement sucks. What is extraordinary about some of the hashtag movements is that they werent just in name only. People actually marched. People went out into the streets. I cant breathe. Hands up. Dont shoot people protested, did walkouts. When do we want it . Now i think about when i was first getting into politics in my early teens and i felt like as a young person you were meant to be patted on the head and isnt this nice. I feel like now theres really a space. The world is waking up and change is coming whether you like it or not. All you bad folks, you must go and once again we witnessed history unfold. The emmy goes to billy porter. This whole decade of transformation, especially entertainment and film, is that while we still have a very long way to go, theres so much thats promising. Became the first muslim actor to win an academy award. Catherine big low, first woman direct. Cox, the first transgender woman nominated for an acting emmy. You need some of these. I made my own couture. I dont think that you can understate the impact of seeing some of these firsts coming in entertainment. You have ava duvernay running her own studio headlining movies like crazy rich asians ending with black panther that moved the needle on what it meant to have a predominantly black cast in the marvel universe. Hamilton is a breathtaking body of work. Who do you think you are . Gary antoinette . It might be crazy what im about to say the decade in tv was just, i mean, explosive. Because we can stream them whenever we want, were able to sort of consume much more complex culture whenever we want on our own time, and it led to the creation of amazing television. Dont know how obvious that is. Nothing was about to happen anything something happened. Winter is coming. My dad alabama my mother louisiana this was the decade that Queen Beyonce ascended to her thrown. When you think about the album lemonade for example which was all about black pride and selfworth, her performance at coachella was so amazing they renamed it beychella. I mean she ran away with the decade heads down. Thats down the right field line into the corner. The sports moment of the decade absolutely has to be the Washington Nationals winning the world series. 32. There it is the Washington Nationals, world champions im a huge nationals fan so im a little bit biassed, but it was just a great uplifting story at a time that america needed it more than ever before. Thehole ballpark is doing this. Terrible song but a great rallying cry. Can you do it for us now . Isnt that it . Its the end this is america got you slipping off you know, i cant tell you what the 2020s will be defined by, but i can tell you this. We live in an era where it feels like every bill is coming due at once. Big debates about health care. Joes plan essentially we retain the status quo. Thats not true. No, it is not right. That is exactly true. About the environment, when i think basically nobody thinks that the system is really fair anymore. So it just feels like were living not only through one reckoning but a kind of cascade of reckonings. Im really excited about Space Exploration. The future of Space Exploration is something really exciting to look forward to in the 2020s. I really am kind of curious what is going to happen with the tesla truck. I think it looks like something out of the jetsons. Well, here we go again. This is a great time to be alive, and the next decade is going to be crazy. I want my flying car you do . I want my flying car. Wow. Everybody up in the air, streets, sidewalks empty. Im down with that. Because you will stay on the street, right . Ill stay on the street, go for a stroll. Thats so reflective, ten years, the last ten years. Yes. And to try to remember what stands out to you the most, and we were talking about the netflix change of everything that we talked about obvious in there, the way we consume media now. You know what will stand out for me . Tell me. This. Oh, yeah. See you again next year. Yeah, at the same time, same place. Still ahead in our conversation, our conversation from space with recordsetting astronaut Christina Koch. Your local news is coming up next. Stay with us. This is a kpix 5 news morning update. Good morning. It is 8 25. It hitting the roadways early this morning still quiet. And easy ride for the most part in fact everything checking in problem free for the bay area bridges with no delays across the golden gate. Everything clear out of marin county as you head into the city. Also same goes for the bay bridge. We have an accident on the peninsula along 101 north bound. A cart facing the wrong way. To other vehicles also involved in this collision. The two right lanes are blocked. You have a lot of activity to the scene so some slight delays but other than that you are looking at some ok drive times for the rest of 101. Still clearing a crash on Airport Boulevard eastbound. Keep that in mind if youre headed towards sfo this morning. We have a road closure in effect do to fall in power cables. A beautiful blue sky as we start the day but it is cold. Right now, we are looking at many locations down to the 30s. Subfreezing in santa rosa, 31 livermore, 38 san jose, 39 in oakland and 44 for San Francisco. As we head through the afternoon enjoy the sunshine. We will see daytime highs in the mid to upper 50s. Upper 50s from santa rosa and san jose. As you head through the day we are looking at plenty of sun for tomorrow another cold start to the day then mainly sunny skies for your saturday. The rain comes in for sunday afternoon. High pressure builds back in for next week and we will see plenty of sunshine as we and 2019 and start 2020. T piq oh, love on top. Very good song today. Welcome back to cbs this morning. It is time to bring you some of the stories that we are talking about, talking about them at the table this morning. This is where each of us pick a story we would like to share dana, you have a story. What do you have today . That is right. My theme of the year, marriage. Im going to stick with it. Olympic Gold Medalist putting a spin on tradition. She just proposed to her fiance, new Jersey Devils star pique subban. They got engaged in august but on christmas she decided to propose with a ring. She said that we talk about equality in action, men should have Engagement Rings, too. He obviously said yes. Shes not the first celebrity to propose, and i know, i get it, they were already engaged, but judge judy, jennifer hudson, Elizabeth Taylor all proposed as well. I got to say, it is too late for me now, he has the wedding ring on, but, sean grande, you are lucky because i would have put an Engagement Ring on your finger if i thought about it. I love that. Whoa. That is great. Right. It is nice. Sticking with that im old school, so you old school . All about equality, but you still i mean i still want him to propose to me, that par i love. Absolutely. I like the idea of a male Engagement Ring. I like that idea. Keeping with that theme of love on top, keeping with the theme of proposing, survey says, i have a Marriage Proposal that was a winner. A fayetteville, north carolina, man, asked his girlfriend a series of weddingrelated questions during a game of family feud, but saved the most important part for last. Name a date a woman always dreams of. Her wedding day. How would you finish this. Will you marry me . Yes, i will. Might as well make it official, right . So joshua and kiana i know, look at her. Joshua and kiana have been together since high school. They plan to tie the not in 2021 after she graduates from nursing school. You know, guys, when she said, yeah, i will, she didnt realize it was the actual proposal until he got down on one knee and she just thats great. Melted. It was such a beautiful moment. Some of the questions were, so name something a woman wears all white to. She was like, a wedding dress. Something old finish this sentence. Something old, something new. Something borrowed, something blue. Right. Listen. These folks at the start of their love journey. Love it. This comes somewhat full circle. A little sad story but a good one nonetheless. A recentlywidowed grandmother made an emotional trip to the past through a surprise christmas gift, a video posted on twitter shows her family giving merher a silverengravedx this week. Oh, my god. So she is crying because inside the box was a pile of letters she exchanged with her husband when they were in college back in 1962. They were married for nearly 60 years before he died earlier this year, and so their children found the letters in their fathers belongings and surprised her with them. For me, it was my first room at virginia state, bird hall, 109 bird hall. Those envelopes mark her husbands time at west point in petersburg, virginia, as well as annapolis, maryland. It is a story about, man, if you are so lucky to experience that kind of love bring me a tissue. I know, right . I missed that was, wow. Are you all right . Yeah, man. Letter writing is a lost art, also. Keep the emails. I dont know what else to say on that. Beautiful story. We were very sappy today. We were. We love love. Nasa astronaut Christina Koch is about to make sis torrey for the second time this year. Tomorrow will be her 289th consecutive day in space, breaking Peggy Whitsons record of the longest single space flight by a woman. In october she took part in the first allfemale spacewalk. She and fellow astronaut replaced a faulty battery unit. Christina koo Christina Koch joins us from the International Space station. Good morning to you. Good morning and welcome on board. Good to be with you. Tomorrow you are expected to break Peggy Whitsons record for the longest single space flight by a female astronaut. What is it like for you . What has the experience been like . First and foremost, it is a huge honor. Peggy is aind e mentor me through the years and to gi. I like to think it is not so much how many days you are up here but what you do with each of the days. That remind me to bring my best to every single day. I think it of what we know about what longduration space flight can do to the human body and thats important for our future exploration deeper going to mars and returning to the moon and going there to stay. But overall i would have to say that my number one hope for this milestone is that the record is exceeded again as soon as possible because that means that were continuing to push the boundaries. Pushing boundaries is becoming the norm for you right now. Back in october you and jessica meir had the first allfemale spacewalk and you both wrote so beautifully about it and in talking about it. Why do you think were seeing these milestones now for women in space . You know, i think it is a wonderful time for human space flight because i think we finally recognize that it is not worth going unless we go together, that it is important to not turn away anynnthryonas. Were going to go for all humanity and to support humanitys love for exploration, then we have to do it with all humanity. I think we are seeing that as our plans unfold for going back to the moon, seeing the first woman walk on the moon in 2024, and just recognizing that we have to go together if were going to go and were going to do it right. You know, christina, i love how you say you go for all of humanity, which has sort of been the mission of astronauts, but nasa says its allfemale spacewalk was not intentionally planned given its historic nature, but how do you feel about all of the attention given to breaking all of those barriers . You know, thats exactly right. I think that the first allfemale spacewalk was more a result of where we decided to go. My class was trained right in step. We were all trained together, and we are the first class thats half femaledit staards o expectations, and that was the beauty of it. You know, to me it is an opportunity to inspire, and i think that highlighting the fact that it was the first allfemale eva spacewalk is important because seeing those milestones be broken sort of tells people where were at and where we think that the importance lies. I think it is inspiring because future spacpace explorers need see people that remind them of themselves and they see a piece of themselves in to bring the inspiration home. I know it was certainly true for me in my background. So to have the opportunity to do it for future spacpace explorers a real honor. Christina, you are there to do science but you have become wellknown for the photography that you have taken. What is the most memorable thing you have seen since you have been up there . So many things come to mind. It was wonderful to see the places i grew up from space for the first time. The most aweinspiring things was to see the Northern Lights from above on a planetary scale. I have see them from below and the beautiful shimmering lights along the sky and taking over the whole sky, but to look down on the earth and see the entire shape of the auroras, you know, as they form near the poles was truly an amazing sight and literally took my breath away. Christina koch, thank you so much for your time. It has been amazing just seeing you up there. Congratulations. Thank you so much. It has been my pleasure to be with you all. All right.
