Mr. Trump could be only the third president to be impeached. Protesters rallied against the president in dozens of cities across the nation last night. [ chants ] some protesters in philadelphia held up lights that spelled out impeachment. In milwaukee, demonstrators had signs reading no one is above the law, and similar scenes played out on the west coast. We have more from capitol hill. How is the president responding to this historic vote today . Reporter well, annemarie, President Trump wrote a sixpage letter to House Speaker nancy pelosi. In it he said that the impeachment is worse than the salem witch trials. He also tweeted saying hes not worried about it and hes done nothing wrong. Today the house of representatives is expected to impeach the president of the United States for just the third time in the nations history. The president is completely unrepentant and defiantly declares his behavior here perfect. Reporter yesterday the House Rules Committee laid the ground rules for todays vote. Six hours of debate reporter which comes almost 21 years to the day that the house voted to impeach president clinton. Article one is adopted reporter President Trump called the 2019 effort a partisan attempted coup in a sixpage letter to speaker nancy pelosi. Other president s are going to have to live with this reporter the president wrote, democrats are on a vicious crusade and accused them of the charges hes facing, abuse of power and obstruction of congress. In a letter to her democratic colleagues, pelosi wrote, if we do not act, we will be derelict in our duty. To impeach the president of the United States for that is a disgrace. Former Trump Campaign chairman Paul Manafort is in the hospital. The 70yearold reportedly suffered a cardiac event. His Attorney Says manafort is in stable condition after being moved to a hospital last thursday from a federal prison in pennsylvania. Manafort was supposed to be in court today in new york city where hes facing financial crimes. Hes currently serving 7. 5 years after being convicted as part of special counsel Robert Muellers russia investigation. Meantime, Paul Manaforts former deputy will be heading to jail. Yesterday, a federal judge sentenced rick gates to 45 days behind bars. He will also have to serve three years of probation for financial crimes and lying to investigators. Gates pleaded guilty in february of 2018 to charges brought by the special counsels office. The judge cited gates, quote, extraordinary cooperation with council muellers office and other investigations. Prosecutors had pushed for a light sentence to reflect gates assistance. Tornadoes have ripped apart communities for a second straight day across the south. These pictures are from mystic, georgia. Its just one of 30 storms reported in only 24 hours. Some of the worst damage in mississippi and louisiana. At least three people were killed by the tornados and another person died in kentucky due to flooding from heavy rain associated with the same storm system. A 13yearold boy has been charged with felony murder in the case of tessa majors, a Barnard College freshman killed in new york city at a park. One 14yearold suspect was questioned and released, while another jumped from a moving car on his way to the police station. Nikki battiste reports. Reporter in a murder thats rattled the nation, a babyfaced 13yearold had his day in court. What can you tell us about your nephew . The boys family was not talking. The 13yearold suspect sat slumped in court staring ahead blankly. At one point yawning during the evidence hearing that would determine his role in the stabbing death of tessa majors. An nypd detective testified that Surveillance Video shows the boy never touched majors or held a knife, but the detective says the teen told him he had picked up the knife before the robbery when his friend dropped it. He was charged with felony murder and robbery. The 13yearolds name has not been made public, but the nypd testified the teen told them he watched as his two friends grabbed majors and put her in a choke hold. They said he identified the 14yearold he said slashed majors several times in the torso with a knife, causing feathers to fall out of her coat, and that majors yelled for help. After the attack, majors was found facedown and eventually stopped breathing. Tessa majors played in a band and was just finishing up her first semester at Barnard College. So far the murder weapon has not been found, and there are no eyewitnesses. The 13yearold will remain in police custody, but his alleged 14yearold accomplice is still on the run. Yesterday thousands of Police Officers lined the streets of jersey city to honor detective joseph seals. Seals was shot last week during a confrontation with two suspects who murdered three other people during an hours long gun battle. The suspects were killed during the shootout. Seals was a 13year veteran of the force, and he leaves behind a wife and five children. A plea deal has been offered to the grandfather of a toddler who fell to her death on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship in puerto rico. Prosecutors say that the deal would require sam anello to plead guilty to negligent homicide. In exchange he would get no jail time and minimum probation and supervision. Anello was charged in the death of his granddaughter, 18monthold chloe weigand. She fell from an open window in july. Anello said he thought the window was closed. His Attorney Says anello is thinking about the deal.
