Reporter about 24 hours ago at the home behind me, police discovered a young woman with stab wounds, her 2yearold daughter missing, and the girls father the suspect. The former couple had a history of Domestic Violence according to a source. Tonight were learning what happened when investigators arrived here and how it all ended nearly 200 miles away. Cell phone video captures the suspect trying to smash his car window after leaving his keys and daughter in the car. Your 2yearold daughter is in there, dude. Reporter but hes outnumbered, surrounded by Good Samaritans. What are you doing you stupid son of a [ bleep] reporter who recognized him as the suspect of an amber alert, accused of trying to murder his exgirlfriend the night before. Theres an appliance cord around her neck. Possibly life threatening at this moment. She has a cut ear to ear across her throat. Reporter one officer responds to the scene on 11th and reed in san jose and reporting the home looks familiar. Ive been here before for a prior domestic. Reporter the officer said hes responded there to a Domestic Violence call, but this time the victims daughter is nowhere to be found. One witness reported seeing the father jump the fence, triggering the amber alert. Nearly 12 hours later and 200 miles away in cambria, Good Samaritans recognize him and the car from the amber alert. I told my wife get out, im going to block this guy in, so i moved the car and blocked him in. Reporter one of them choke holds and bear hugs the suspect until the police arrived, taking him into custody. Little bethany in the front seat, they say, was unharmed. There were very brave and heroes. Reporter and bethanys mother were told is in critical but stable condition. In san jose, maria medina, kpix 5. Lagana denied he was the suspect in the amber alert. The store is in a suburb just south of seattle. And new at 11 00, a warning before you gas up your car again. Hackers have come up with a new way to swipe your credit card information. Betty yu explains how you can protect yourself. Reporter visa is warning that hackers are ramping up their attacks at gas stations without actually tampering with the fuel pump. Its a kind of attack thats difficult for customers to detect right away. Foster citybased visa is warning that sophisticated hackers are using spamlike emails to get into gas station payment systems. They use phishing schemes, the person that works at the gas station opens the email, the software is installed on their system and then they have access to all the data stored on the local server for the gas station. Reporter visa says Customers UsingMagnetic Stripe readers are at risk. So far more secure chip cards havent been impacted. It could have been either at a gas station or some Convenience Store or some place i may have used by visa card. Reporter experts say you may have a better shot at recouping your losses faster if you lose a credit card versus a debit card. Visa announced earlier this year that gas stations must use chip card readers by october 2020. After that, any stations without the new technology will be liable for any fraud. The cost to replace the entire pump is reportedly up to 250,000. The problem is some of these, you know, mom and pop gas stations, um, they dont have the sources and the revenue and the funding to replace pumps because its really expensive to put this modern technology in. Some places will probably go out of business, and it could be the places where you get a good deal on gas. Reporter betty yu, kpix 5. Well tonight the chp is investigating a dozen new projectile attacks on cars just this weekend. This chevy tahoe was hit during a 6 minute window. A small round object about the size of a marble shattered the drivers side window. The attacks happened on 101 in monterey county. In all theyve had more than 60 since february. Its messed up, its really bad. They shouldnt be throwing projectiles onto the freeway or highway, its dangerous. There are speed radars on 101 tonight, but the chp wont say if theyre capable of taking pictures of license plates. One of the tool box killers as died in san quentin. Lawrence bittaker was on death row for torturing and murdering 5 teen girls in Southern California 40 years ago. Prosecutors say that he and his accomplice roy norris used tool like ice picks, sledge hammer, pliers and the like to commit the murders. Pg e has until tomorrow to submit a revised bankruptcy plan to the governor after he rejected the first one. Today more than 100 protesters shut down the street in front of pg es San Francisco headquarters. They are angry about the recent blackouts and want to see the private utility turned into a publicly owned one. In a statement, pg e says this, quote, we understand and recognize the serious concerns raised by customers and wildfire victims, and we acknowledge that while we have made progress, we have more work to do. The companys stock plummeted 14 percent today. Some bombshell accusations against the Mormon Church tonight. The Washington Post is reporting a whistleblower filed a complaint with the irs claiming the lds church has stock piled 100 billion that was supposed to be used for charitable purposes. The complaint urges the irs to strip the church of its tax exempt status and goes on to allege it could owe billions in taxes. The church told us tonight it doesnt provide information about specific transactions or financial decisions, but it went on to provide us with this excerpt from its church principle, quote, the church is not a financial or profitmaking institution. It uses resources to carry out its divinely appointed mission. By the way, the whistleblower is a former Church Investment manager, and the post is reporting that hes also asking for a cut of the unpaid taxes the irs recovers. Pressure tonight on undecided members of the house to declare if theyre for or against impeaching president trump. The vote expected in just 2 days. So far 2 House Democrats say they are voting no. New jersey democrat Jeff Van Drew is expected to switch parties after the vote. Representative Collin Peterson of minnesota says hes remain in the party, but likely vote no. After the house vote, the senate will take up an impeachment trial. The Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer sent a letter to Senate Majority leader mcconnell suggesting Justice John Roberts send subpoenas to 4 administration officials. The nonprofit receives millions of dollars in public money to help find permanent housing for the homeless. Susie steimle joins us now with a late breaking update on this story. Slightly different than we expected. Tonight i was supposed to be standing here telling you about additional concerns brought to us by clients of bacs. For months weve been asking them to address safety concerns and inadequate homes clients said they were offered. But bacs consistency stated it would not talk to kpix for this series on grounds of privacy for this client but now bacs is changing its tune. The executive director has agreed to talk to us and hopefully respond to concerns from bacs clients likes this. It seemed to be nothing but a glorified homeless encampment. There was so much drugs being used, doors slamming every 2 minutes, you cant sleep because theyre up all night in and out of the buildings. Reporter does it feel safe . Ring camera video from a neighboring house shows the out of control bus hitting a mailbox and then slamming into a tree and moments later it smashed into the corner of a garage. This all happened about 7 30 this morning. It appears the driver had fallen asleep or was incapacitated at the wheel. A neighbor went to the scene right after the crash and spoke to the driver. We heard a big noise, and when he woke up, he found himself right in front of the house. Kind of dozed off. Collided with a parked vehicle and then a communications box, a fence, and ultimately a house. That bus came to rest against a large boulder. Luckily there were no passengers on board and nobody got hurt. Some alarming new findings tonight about the dangers of ecigarettes. The Research Done right here in the bay area. In the first long term study of its kind, ucsf researchers found vaping actually increases the likelihood of developing chronic pulmonary diseases. In just 2 years the odds of developing lung disease increased about 30 percent. The hope that people had had about ecigarettes, that they would be dramatically safer than cigarettes or smokers would abandon cigarettes and go to ecigarettes has just turned out not to be true. Ecigarettes are making the tobacco epidemics are worse. I believed they were actually safe at the time. Theyre just using our generation or the Younger Generation as a guinea pig. Researchers also found less than 1 percent of smokers completely switched to vaping and the health risks actually tripled among the socalled dual user. Reporter for those who do online delivery through the United StatesPostal Service, this big new robot is whats making sure your packages are getting to where they need to go on time. This is our biggest day of the year. Reporter postal Officials Say packages have always been a challenge to sort. Now on the busiest mail day of the busiest mail week of the entire year and with so many people shopping online, the u. S. Postal service has upgraded the technology. This year the San FranciscoDistribution Center has extra help in the form of a large robot called the universal sorting system. It takes it and sorts it along the line, and here theres a 6 camera tunnel that reads the label. Reporter the robot then puts the packages in the correct pile. It does 2200 packages an hour. We dont need as many manual hands as we used to, but we still need people to run the machines and deliver mail. Reporter so you wont replace employee s with the robots . For now, no.
