The city of gilroy hosted a Gun Buyback Program just months after the deadly festival shooting. And as kpix 5s devin fehely reports, its the countys first in more than two decades. Reporter its impossible to ignore the backdrop against which this gun buyback happens in south santa clara county. This is a community thats been touched by tragedy, thats been scarred by recent incidents of gun violence, so the goal of getting guns off the street has extra significance and resonance. The cars stretched down the block, lined up to turn in their guns, many motivated by the tragic shooting at the garlic festival. When they had that shooting, we felt so bad for everybody, and its our community, and so whats left is we can get some of the guns out of our community. Reporter the District Attorneys Office partnered with the morgan hill and Gilroy Police departments. We dont want a firearm taken and used to commit a crime. Reporter the District Attorneys Office offered 100 for every hand gun and rifle, and 200 for assault weapons, although most say they simply wanted a safe way to dispose of guns they no longer needed or wanted. The money meant nothing to the effect it could have if something happened. He felt strongly about the fact he wouldnt want any of his weapons to end up in the hand of someone who did something what might harm someone else. Especially the kids in the neighborhood. Reporter organizers say they hope with each gun thats turned in, the potential threat of violence is decreased in some small but aappreciable way for a community thats seen too much gun violence in the last year. Organizers say they were both surprised and encouraged by the strong turnout at todays event. Devin fehely, kpix 5. Close to 500 firearms were collected at the gun buyback event including 200 hand guns, 159 rifles, and 26 assault weapons. Police officers distributed more than 47,000 for the firearms. They also gave out hundreds of gun locks. Meanwhile the executive director of the gilroy garlic festival has stepped down. In a statement he said its been an honor to serve as executive director for 14 years, and im immensely proud of all the festival has done to support the local community. I truly believe that the festival will benefit from a fresh perspective in the executive director position. Another gun buyback was held in San Francisco today. Sfpd teamed up with the Violence Prevention Group for the event. Together they collected more than 300 firearms. Right now police in santa cruz are looking for a pair of thieves who stole more than 100,000 worth of jewelry. The 2 suspects wearing hoods and gloves broke the glass door of a judy wyattantiques on pacific avenue yesterday. Police say once they got inside they used a hammer to smash the cases open. The suspects put the stolen jewelry in a bag and ran out the door. The entire heist took no more than 90 seconds. Police released these pictures showing some of the stolen merchandise. Investigators are reviewing security cameras, and if you have information about the case, youre asked to call the santa cruz police. In monterey county, 4 more cars traveling along highway 101 and 156 have been hit by projectiles. The chp says a car was hit on highway 156 yesterday, another was struck at rocks road. 2 other vehicles were hit along highway 101. There have now been 55 reported incidents in the area since february. Theres now a 14,000 reward for information leading to an arrest for these random attacks. Authorities say if you are a victim, call 911 immediately and quickly pull over to a safe area. Police in pittsburgh are searching for a pair of masked gunman that broke into a mans home overnight and shot him dead. Investigators say the men entered the resident on havenwood circle just before midnight and confronted the people inside before firing he victim. They took off in a gray or silver sedan. San jose Police Arrested this man for murder. Police responded to a shooting on Florence Court yesterday and found the victim lying on the street. Officers searched the home and found the suspected killer, 18yearold carlos gomez inside. He was taken into custody and booked into county jail. Smart train passengers are celebrating the opening of 2 new stations in the north bay. Wilson walker caught up with the people among the first to try out the expanded service. The couple that owns him has walked more than 20 miles to try and find him. They say hes a vital part of their attempt to cope with tragedy. The river side county sheriff says 2 of his deputies were refused service at this starbucks this week. He says the quote antipolice culture repeatedly displayed by starbucks employees must end. The Company Admits the deputies were ignored for nearly 5 minutes and says there was no excuse. Might be something personal, might not be. I think there should be some more investigation needed. I dont know, they were nice to me. Starbucks apologized for any quote intentional or unintentional disrespect. Its not the first time the company has been accused of discriminating against cops. Maybe at most in the coast range a quarter inch of range by tomorrow morning, but its sure icy and cold up north. You can see it on the satellite image. A few showers overnight as the cold front drags through the bay area and it will increase the fog potential. From now through tomorrow morning a little bit will fall, but not much. Weak cold front sinks south. Showers continue overnight tonight. Dry and clear on sunday. Rain chances come in again on wednesday.
