Hang out if youre on the 80 corridor or any of the others that work their way through the east bay or south bay, that band of rain is headed your way. Thats what it looks like when you time lapse it. Reporter ken, im at the corner of drum and california here in San Francisco, one of a number of busy pedestrian intersections here in the city, but the pedestrian death problem is not just facing San Francisco. Its facing cities large and small across the bay area and the state. So far on the streets of San Francisco this year, 17 pedestrians have been hit and killed by cars. Walkers say every trip into a crosswalk is a potentially dangerous on sometimes its okay, but a lot of times people dont Pay Attention to the traffic signs. We have the walk and theyll just ride through. Reporter and its not just the city by the bay. In san jose the number is a staggering 57 pedestrian deaths so far this year, including this crash in south san jose last wednesday leaving a 40yearold man dead. In berkeley, 2 pedestrians have been hit and killed in 2019, and 89 injured in crashes. Acting director of the sfmta says the push toward vision zero, no traffic related deaths, cant happen until drivers slow down. Well the single biggest thing that causes pedestrian deaths in traffic is speeding. When drivers drive over the speed limit at speeds not safe for city streets, tragic events occur. Reporter in San Francisco its led to fast tracking projects along streets where fatalities and crashes are the highest. In a statement to kpix 5, walk sf said more changes need to come in the new year for Pedestrian Safety including more Police Enforcement of dangerous driving, lower speed limits on key streets, and for many more intersections with no turn on red so at pedestrians can truly cross safely. The sfmta has one wish. I would get everyone in San Francisco to drive just a little bit slower. Reporter now coming up early in 2020, we can expect the state legislature to make some progress on giving local cities more control over speed limits in their own cities. Milpitas police just released photos of 3 men suspected in a smash and grab robbery that happened back in august at the valani jewelers store in the great mall. Minutes before police say the 3 robbed a nearby home depot store. The photo shows them in that store and getting into a car. At the jewelry store, the 3 suspects broke display cases and stole thousands of dollars worth of jewelry and watches. A group of oakland mothers fighting to keep control of a vacant home theyve been living in. Momsfor housing is a group of mothers without shelter and their children, and they say theyve been living at the home on magnolia and 30th since midnovember. This week an eviction notice was taped to the door. It comes from the owner of the house thats been holding the property vacant. We want to talk to them. We want somebody to negotiate with us. They should give us this home. All of the homelessness theyve created, they should give us this home. We deserve this home. Moms for housing has started a petition to keep the home. The group says the Sheriffs Office will come on the 17th to evict them, and they hope the community will come out and help rally around them on that day. All right, straight back into high def doppler. Were watching that band of heavy rain thats just kind of working across the north bay and now everybody else. Take a look at a close up view here. You look for the yellows and oranges on here for heavy rain. You can kind of feel overwhelmed when you look at it this way, but clearly theres a pattern. Theres San Francisco. Theres san jose. North bay is where were seeing the most widespread heavy showers. Lets come in for a close up look and well come right back in again to downtown santa rosa. Right where 12 and 101 come together. Oranges on a high def doppler show the rain coming down at a moderate to heavy level. Red is just down right heavy. But thats really good rain thats been consistent through santa rosa and much of the 101 corridor. Petaluma there, you are and as we work back down to the south, well see things have quieted down for the moment for marin. A lot more heavy showers worked into solano county. Hayward, youve started to notice the showers pick up here and work through the east bay right along 580 and 880 and going across the bridges. Were already seeing good rain over the bay and up into the oakland hills, weve got a good little band there. But oakland for the most part seeing the lighter rain and it extends through the santa cruz mountains. So were in there. The question is now, how long is it going to take . So well switch from high def doppler, put it into the futurecast. Picks up on the rain where it is now. Lets play it forward and ill let this go all the way until about 11 00 tonight. Watch what happens. It will take awhile. Rain keeps going. And then by the time weve gotten into the 1 00 hour on saturday, the heaviest rain has moved to the east and well get a break from the first phase of this storm. Ill show you the forecast for saturday coming up here in a second. First, i just want to talk about one of the leading concerns. Whos getting the best rain now . The north bay. And we still have a burn scar from the kinkade fire up in sonoma county. And looking at the accumulating rainfall totals from now and saturday afternoon, thats 5. 5 inches on the highest mountains above the burn scar. All that water has to flow through the burn scar. This will be tricky territory, particularly for anybody thats going to be out on roads through the rural area of the burn scar. You should really avoid that. Keep your wits about you, any drainages youre near, even rock slides on the highway you may have no way of knowing. Not a good time to drive in the vicinity of the burn scar, so we have a Flash Flood Watch until 4 00 in the morning on saturday. Now lets talk about the weekend because i showed you fridays rain. Lets talk about saturday first, saturday were still in this all day. The details for saturday are on and off showers that will be heavy at times. Saturday, remember, well be back in the center of the storm. Were seeing the front edge now, but saturday were in the center of it. Thats where youre most likely to get pop up thunderstorms. Then we get to sunday and things start to calm down. We focus mainly on the morning. A few left over showers, maybe an isolated thunderstorm. And into the afternoon on sunday, things will begin to clear and yes, it will snow in the sierra. Not as low as wed like. Snow levels around 6,000 feet. At least for the meaningful snow. It will make it easier on the drive. It will be decent snow for the ski resorts, but its not the best snow to build in the water storage in the sierra. Its just a little too warm, but well take it. 2 feet on top is still good. Overnight lows warm. Mid50s tonight. Highs tomorrow, thats warmer than average. The cold front isnt Strong Enough to drop the temperatures that much. Then look at monday, sunshine, back into the mid60s, and if you were watching yesterday there was a small chance of rain on wednesday, but were taking that out for now. Reporter the nutcracker is packed with swirling snowflakes, a dancing bear, and a sugar plum fairy who dances with flowers. But its here inside this studio at the San Francisco ballet where a different kind of magic is revealed. What i love about the nutcracker is its become a national phenomenon. Reporter here the dancers are not professionals, theyre patients diagnosed with a neurological disorder. Steve has parkinsons. I was looking for something to, you know, keep me going. So a large part of my parkinsons program. Reporter parkinsons disease is chronic and progressive. It impacts the nerves of the brain that control our movements. Reporter theres shaking, muscle stiffness, and difficulty walking, balancing, and coordination. While medications can help, there is no cure. But there is ballet. This class is part of an internationally acclaimed Dance Program or parkinsons patients. Theyre encouraged to bring their loved ones. You know, its good that the spouses can come too so we were a package team. Reporter former ballet dancer and instructor cecilia beam is the teacher. The focus. Its about big movements. Reporter the director brought the program to the et 3 olette, llbamother c herself a dancer and instructor, died from the disease. It was a huge shock when she got diagnosed at a very early age. She was in her late 50s. Reporter armand was determined to help others. Ballet is helping you in a physical way. Reporter as to whether theres proof dance can help. Absolutely. Reporter dr. Megan lynch specializes in neurorehabilitation in San Francisco. More than 38 Peer Reviewed studies point to the benefits of certain kinds of dance for patients with parkinsons. This dance class with the parkinsons patients at San Francisco ballet was really one of the first of its kind. Reporter and while ballet has not yet been rigorously studied, the patients here are convinced. Its very beneficial and makes a difference that pills dont make. Im sure i could stand on one leg longer than i could. And balance is important. The music i think stimulates part of the brain that doesnt get used quite so much. Reporter the dancers said they felt connected to their bodies in a positive way as well as feeling connected to others. The social aspects are undeniable. Reporter towards the end of the class, young dancers from the Ballet School perform 2 pieces from the tcracker. The spanish and then nuthe russian dance. The kids got a treat in return. The patients performed in front of them to rousing applause single game record its nice to see them enjoying dance as much as we do. Last 2 hours, look at the yellow and orange band that moves across the entire bay area. This is the cold front of the storm. Its the leading edge, and this is likely the most impressive point in in storm. Certainly for tonight. We may see another similar situation develop into tomorrow afternoon, but lets focus on tonight. This is prime time, and its coming right in for the community. The focus has been the north bay. Now everyone is in on this. The showers extend all the way down into santa clara county. But the north bay has seen the most consistent and heaviest rain pretty steady for the last 2 hours. Santa rosa, theres 12 and 101. Yellows and oranges on here show you a good amount
