Im annemarie green. We begin with a new day of public hearings in the impeachment inquiry into President Trump. Today a top diplomat central to the democrats investigation will testify. In just a few hours, lawmakers will hear from u. S. Ambassador to the eu gordon sondland. He will likely face questions about a phone call with President Trump a day after mr. Trumps july 25th call with ukraines president. Later in the day, laura cooper and david hale will testify. All three witnesses were recently questioned behind closed doors. Meanwhile, key testimony involving the republicans star witnesses went into the night. Yesterday lawmakers questioned former envoy to ukraine kurt volleyer volker and National City council chairman. This was critical for house republicans. How did it go . Reporter yeah. Good morning. It seemed like a marathon, didnt it, because of how long everything went. Both witnesses who testified said that they had concerns about the white houses ukrainian policy. Kurt volker said that he was unaware of the pressures put on the Ukrainian Government to look into the bidens. And then there was tim morrison who was on the july 25th phone call. He said that his concerns didnt rise until he learned about the lack of military aid going to the ukraine. Army Lieutenant ColonelAlexander Vindman says he was shocked when President Trump brought up the bidens, the president s political rival, during the july 25th call to ukraine. You heard him raise that subject again that ambassador sondland had raised before about investigating the bidens, right . I did. When you heard that, what was the first thought that went through your mind . Frankly, i couldnt believe what i was hearing. Reporter mike pences aide Jennifer Williams was also listening in. In contrast to other president ial calls i observed it involved discussion of what appeared to be a domestic political matter. Reporter two witnesses that republicans wanted also testified. They, too, expressed concerns about the white houses ukrainian policy. The allegations against Vice President biden are selfserving and not credible. Reporter though neither said it was an impeachable offense. I feared at the time of the call, july 25th, how its disclosure would play in the political climate. Reporter today gordon sondland, ambassador to the european union, testifies. He revised his original testimony surrounding a possible quid pro quo after other witnesses contradicted him. You also testified that ambassador sondland had told you on another occasion that he could call the president whenever he wanted. Is that right . I yes. Reporter former National Security council aide tim morrison said sondland told a ukrainian official that u. S. Aid would be released only after ukraine publicly announced the investigations. So its expected to be a key day in this impeachment inquiry. Democrats are kind of going to be leaning into ambassador sondland whos already had to revise his testimony once before. So well see where everything stands come 9 00 this morning. Annemarie . It will be interesting. Skyler henry in washington. Thank you so much. Cbs evening news anchor and managing editor Norah Odonnell will anchor special reports today and again tomorrow. We expect testimony to begin at 9 00, 8 00 central. You can also watch continuing coverage on our streaming network, cbsn. To campaign 2020. Tonight democratic president ial candidates will hold their fifth debate. Ten contenders will take the stage in atlanta. Danya bacchus is there. Who can we expect to really stand out tonight . Reporter Pete Buttigieg has surged in the iowa caucus polls since the previous debate, and tonight from what weve seen from those debates, he could be a target. Ten candidates are set to battle it out wednesday night in the fifth democratic president ial debate in atlanta. Joe biden, elizabeth warren, and Bernie Sanders remain leading contenders, but a lot has changed since the last debate in october. Pete buttigieg has surged in iowa caucus polls. Former Massachusetts GovernorDuval Patrick announced hes running, and former mayor Michael Bloomberg is considering jumping in. Two fewer candidates will be on stage than in october. Former housing secretary Julian Castro failed to qualify this time. And former texas congressman beto orourke dropped out. The twohour debate is being held at the tyler perry studios, once the site of a u. S. Army base. Well this location shines a terrific spotlight on georgias emerging status as a battleground state, and in particular, you know, the role that africanamerican voters will play. I think that people recognize that georgia is in play. Reporter the candidates are expected to square off again on health care, including warrens 20 trillionplus medicare for all plan. Other topics include gun control, immigration, taxes, and who has the best chance to beat trump. The latest cbs news Battleground Tracker finds most democratic voters express some confidence the eventual nominee can defeat the president next november. Only 26 say they are very confident.
