Train. When they first got here, they say the suspect was nowhere to be found. He had gotten away, but he didnt get far. Only about a block away from the bart station where he ran into a car dealership, we spoke to one of the employees at the dealership a short time ago. I was talking to an older couple. As soon as i opened it, somebody grabbed my hand, i thought it was the customer, and he pushed me away, and i was like wow. He had no shoes on. He took the keys, tried to get in the car. I grabbed him, like get out of the car. He came out, hit me in the face, i was like what . And then i hit him back. I hit him one more time, and there was another silver car over there. He tried to jump inside that car. Reporter an extraordinary story from an employee at the car dealership about a block away from the bart station. His heroic actions may have prevented the suspect from getting away. The bart police did take the man into custody. Were still trying to figure out exactly what the fight was over, but as we mentioned earlier, they removed the body and bags of evidence within the last 30 minutes and have reopened the station here. At the south hayward bart station, devin fehely, kpix 5. Now to a developing story, and hopefully well get answers from pg e tonight about a dramatic downgrade now on tomorrows planned Power Outages. Just a few hours ago it was projecting more than 120,000 customers and in 8 bay area counties would lose power as strong offshore winds move in, but now the utility says only about 50,000 customers in napa, solano, and sonoma counties will be impacted. And top officials at pg e giving an update right now. Were going to monitor what theyre saying and bring you the very latest. Why the reversal . We want to find out. First we go to kpix 5s Wilson Walker on the whiplash that some people are feeling. Wilson . Reporter well, ken, a great many frozen turkeys were pardoned by pg e today as that power shut off was scaled back dramatically. I drove over here to lafayette, and despite word spreading this wouldnt happen, its like weve seen in the north bay, a lot of people here very much prepared for this kind of scenario. Its all nice, vacuum packed, smoked. You think im going to let this go . No. Reporter in his garage, mike has some 32 pounds of salmon that he caught himself, so after a hal of poneighborhoo he went to work. Got some generators. Reporter his freezer now e comes with 2 power access points. Adjustment on the side. Reporter so now you have a permanent infrastructure built in. Yeah. Got to do what you got to do. Reporter but just about an hour later, gail grant got the good news. Thank god, thank god. I cant believe we dont have to deal with this tomorrow. Ive got lots of things to do. Reporter her fridge is still empty after the last shut off, partly because she just doesnt see the sense in fully restocking. So now i just buy what i need to buy for the week and hope it goes away. Reporter now thats an adjustment. It is. You cant stock up anymore. Reporter while the shut off here was powered down, thinking about the lights going off is still very much a way of life. Pg e says 8 to 10 years to fix this . Bought a generator. Reporter absolutely no rain, a looming red flag warning, and the associated power shut off, does it feel like the holidays yet . Wilson walker, kpix 5. Wilson, heres where the communication challenge comes in here in this situation because the red flag warning, thats issued by the National Weather service, and that has to do specifically with wind and low humidities. That story has not changed from yesterday to today. How pg e decides they must respond is a nuanced difference here, and i want to be sure were clear that these are different things. The red flag warning still in effect from tomorrow morning to thursday morning. Potential for gusts of 60 Miles Per Hour, mainly in the north bay hills, but the east bay hills and diablo range are just as included in this as they were yesterday. So that side of the story has not changed. But again the focus, the worst of the winds in the north bay. And i want to show you the peak wind. Thats at 6 00 a. M. Tomorrow morning. I want to put some numbers on there. 60 Miles Per Hour gusts in the mountains. Look down in the communities where we all live. You may notice it get breezy, but you wont feel the worst of the winds. The real issue are the 60 Miles Per Hour gusts in the mountains. Ill be back with more on the rest of the forecast in a few minutes. All right, darren, thank you. Small businesses also feeling powerless over whether or not they have electricity. Scottys meat market in marin lost tens of thousands of dollars in inventory last time. Since then its also laid out a lot of cash for back up generators. The last time the losses were massive. Huge amounts for those Small Businesses to withstand that is incredible. It cant go on. Even businesses without perishable inventory told us the Power Outages are a major blow because if computers and credit card readers are down, they cant sell anything anyway. Kpix 5 as your Survival Guide in the potential power shut offs. Find resources online at kpix. Com and stream cbsn bay area on your device. Just about an hour away, residents of orinda will hear from the police chief. And the big question is obviously why the suspects arrested in the murders of 5 people at a Halloween Party have been let go. Theyre free tonight. Andria borba is outside Tonights City Council meeting with more on the sudden decision to let those suspects go. Andria . Reporter well, ken, we are waiting for that update from the police chief here in orinda. We expect that at the top of the meeting here. We tried to talk to people who live in the neighborhood where the shooting happened on halloween. They say they are afraid to go on camera because no one is in custody tonight. After dramatic raids around the bay area on friday, 4 of 5 suspects in the orinda halloween mass shooting are out of custody. The decision to not formally charge the suspects within the mandatory 72 hour arrest period came after representatives from the Contra Costa County District Attorneys Office met with sheriffs investigators monday. Ethically our prosecutors are bound by very strict standards that we will not file charges unless we can prove a case beyond a reasonable doubt. So its not fair to the public if we dont hold that high standard. Reporter tonight on the 28yearold Lebraun Wallace remains in custody held on an unrelated charge out of San Mateo County. A spokesperson for the Sheriffs Office says we stand by our investigation, and the arrests were made pursuant to a judges order. Although the District Attorney may want more investigation done, the persons arrested and responsible for these crimes will ultimately be held to account. For a police agency, they have probable cause. Its a different standard when they make an arrest. Reporter the case is ongoing, but tricky with over 100 people in attendance of the rented airbnb house party. There are lots of witnesses and lots of stories. Now in addition to hearing an update from the police chief tonight on this case, the city council will also be talking about restrictions here in orinda on short term rentals. Well be at the meeting and bring you updates as they became available. Live in orinda, andria borba, kpix 5. Still ahead on kpix 5 and cbsn bay area. An parent change of heart at chickfila is making a change in the bay area. Reporter San Mateo County Community Groups and elected officials were prepared to make life quite miserable for the chickfila set to open here in redwood city next year, but then in an instant it all changed. Reporter after donating to antilgbtq groups for years, on monday the company said theyd focus future donations on education, homelessness, and hunger. Going from where they were to where theyre at now is really encouraging. Reporter San Mateo County supervisor was prepared to go to battle with chickfila over this location under construction in redwood city. He sent the company a letter urging them to withdraw their permit and met with a chickfila representative. Instead of protesting chickfila, we want to cut the ribbon with them. Reporter the backlash was well under way at some of the dozen locations in the bay area, including san jose international. But after learning about the past donations, the Council Voted not to renew their lease in 2026 on grounds that the restaurant is closed sundays and they need someone open 7 days a week. Then a Council Member made National Headlines with this comment. I actually think it would be fine to make this the gayest chickfila in the country and put the flags right outside of it. Reporter and so a week ago the city finally placed the rainbow flag and transgender flag right near the airport restaurant. I really hope that they have changed their ways. I would like nothing more than that for them to become much more enlightened. Well be tracking just to see if they mean what they say. Reporter bob newman said hed considered going to the new restaurant in redwood city now. Definitely. Its reasonable to go with what the majority of society wants, and its time. Every day thousands of bay area families struggle just to make their rent or choose between buying groceries, gas, medicine. Thats right. So kpix is taking up with Whole Foods Market for the 11th Straight Year to feed hungry families this holiday season. Juliette goodrich is live at the whole foods in walnut creek with details on how we can all help. Its a group effort. Its so true. Theres so many ways we can help. Were here at the bay area Whole Foods Market, and im joined by gary ramirez, the storm tale leader at the market, and fill us in. Obviously were in front of a barrel of nonperishables. Yes, visit any Whole Foods Market, bring in nonperishable items and deposit them directly into the barrels picked up by the food bank. Reporter and when youre going through the Cash Register you can do the same . Yes, you can add a donation to your grocery bill or make a separate donation. You can use that method to make a donation as well. Reporter and finally, i love this. If you bring in a reusable bag, you have a program called . Nickels for nonprofits. Reporter so explain that. For every reusable bag you bring in and we reuse to brag your groceries, we credit you 5 cents that could be converted into a donation. Reporter love that idea. Thank you so much. If youd like more information on how to help, go to kpix. Com give. All right, thank you. We head over to darren peck whos been checking the forecast for us. Were tracking the winds right now. And i do not want to overlook how different it felt out there today. Look at the drop. You can see the daytime highs on the right. News flash, those are average. But it wasnt just that the temperatures dropped. It was and still is breezy out there. If you look at the current winds. Heres the south bay. Brighter colors over here to the west and stronger winds. Looking across the rest of the bay area, this is not equal. The strongest winds right now are on the west side of the bay area. And theyre coming out of the northwest. Those are okay. This is not the wind event were so concerned about. Thats coming later tonight. These are the winds that came in with the cool down and when we get our northwest breeze, watch what happens. We start the futurecast and watch how the focus of the winds shifts. Its not going to be out here anymore. Its going to be over here. And the direction change. See the streamlines . Advance it to late tomorrow morning. Those are northeast winds. Thats the concern. It doesnt get going until the overnight hours tonight and through tomorrow afternoon. Look, theres the storm responsible for all this. As far as rain or snow, it went too far inland and had really bad aim and missed. So anything that falls in the state, you must be on the east side, and thats enough snow to mess with the drive over the next 24 hours, so if you know anyone lucky enough to be driving in the mountains, plan on delays and chains. Back at home tomorrow it will be breezy. Temperatures average. The real winds are in the mountains overnight and thats where the red flag warning is. Other than that its average daytime highs and no rain for the next 7 days. Guys back to you. Darren, thank you for that. And just minutes ago pg e said that tomorrows planned power disruptions may be even less severe than the current projections depending on what happens over the next few hours. Well continue to monitor the weather overnight, continue to monitor new Weather Forecast model data as it arrives. Look at where the precipitation is building and where it may be developing. Look for areas that the weather is trending favorably. The utility warned that anyone in a red flag warning area should still be prepared to lose power even if theyre not listed in the zone. The weather is expected to pass by thursday morning. And kpix 5 has your Survival Guide in the potential power shut off. Find resources on kpix. Com and stream cbsn bay area on your favorite device.
