Inside a prestigious meeting for the American College of surgeons, downstairs, underground. Oh my goodness. Wow. Im a victim. Reporter doctors from around the world volunteered to participate in an unusual experiment. What im doing now is being man handled by these people doing some sort of neurocognitive testing. Reporter the task at hand . The future of surgery. This is very original thinking. Reporter its called the surgical metrics project. Here surgeons underwent a bit of biohacking. I was curious, i wanted to see what it was all about. Reporter over the course of 3 days in the exhibit hall, 253 surgeons performed a common operation, but before they picked up their forceps, they were outfitted with wearable technology. Its not typically operating room attire. Reporter the devices will measure their surgical Decision Making as well as their technique. As to why . The goal of the project is really to bring data to what we do as surgeons on a daily basis. Reporter the brains behind the operation . Dr. Carla pugh. Digital data is her domain. Its the future. When you look around us, all of health care is becoming digital. Surgeons need to be a part of that conversation. Reporter pugh is an International Expert on the use of sensors and motion tracking technology. She wants to help surgeons by quantifying their experience. If you want to be the best that you can be, getting there is much easier when you have data. Reporter the experiment begins by measuring a surgeons brain activity. They attach a wearable eeg to the forehead, and then the doctor takes a cognitive test. Attention and memory test. Reporter the eegs role. Is to get a baseline of the cognitive abilities of the people, and then we want to compare that to their performance during the operation. Reporter the team then puttings motion tracking capture sensors on the surgeons fingers. The hands are gloved, and the wires cabled to a control unit. Once you get into it, you relax and forget you have the wires on your fingers. Reporter the patient is actually a small piece of a pigs intestine punctured with tiny holes. The surgeon first must find and then repair the damage. They have 20 minutes. 2 small video cameras record the action as the surgeons work. The sensors capture the surgeons hands moving in 3d. Their brain waves are sent to the cloud. All sound is recorded, and the data synced up. When time is up, a photo is taken and water pumped through to see if there are leaks. It didnt leak i was perfect. Reporter the data is now waiting to be crunched. The surgeons all see a benefit. Its very useful in training. I think its really important. There are surgeons that are better than others, but we dont really have a way of checking that. How do you match up so you can then improve your skills to get to the level of the expert. Or have a way to test our skills. Its important to make sure as we age theres a true data measurement. Thats a particularly important point. The bay area has the lowest Unemployment Rates. The lowest in the state is san mateo at 1. 7 percent, but other counties in the bay area are all under 3 percent. But whats striking is the job growth and low unemployment is statewide. In the 4 decades ive been involved, fresno and the Central Valley have been below 10 percent. Now theyre all below 6 percent. Shasta, butte, for years theyve been in the double digits, and now its below 4 percent. And people are thinking though what about my paycheck . Im i getting more money . And you said were adding manufacturing jobs, and california isnt known for manufacturing. Right, in the years ive been involved, the constant refrain is manufacturing is dead in california. As of this morning we had 1. 3 Million Manufacturing jobs, so it continues to be strong. Construction is strong. And thats really the great growth of your california economy. Its a cross sector. How about paychecks . People making more money . Yes, they are. Wages, its taken some time, but wages are going up. And theyre g up bsitsst thbet higher wage and lower wage. Right. And more breaking news in southern california. The teenaged gunman in the Saugus High School shooting has died. The 16yearold succumbed to a selfinflicted gunshot wound this afternoon.
