Today police said this particular suspect had brandished a knife at officers on different occasions, but officers were able to subdue him using less Lethal Weapons, but he was brandishing a less Lethal Weapon that officers hiss took mistook for the real thing. Reporter the suspect was holding what looked like an automatic pistol at jackson avenue. When officers arrived the suspect was walking towards a group of High School Students just let out of independence high school. One officer called for less lethal efforts, and thats when the suspect was shot with a rifle from 120 feet away. With the backdrop of everything going on in this country with active shooters, the officer felt that he needed to react quickly in order to save lives. Reporter the suspect was identified as 33yearold francis ray cologne. Police said he had a criminal history including robbery, obstructing an officer, battery and brandishing weapons. He also had a history of Mental Health holds and also had stated he wanted to die from suicide by cop. In january of 2017 the family said they received Text Messages that he wanted to commit suicide by cop and quote this time they wont hit me be a rubber bullet. Reporter police say the officer involved was also involved in another Fatal Shooting this past may. He was cleared and back on the job when this happened. My heart goes out to the family. This is an example of the additional need for Mental Health services, treatment, and dug intervention in our community. The chief also said that he was wearing a body worn camera, and the video would be released soon. And we just told you, its not the kincade fire, but another fire called the ranch fire, much smaller and farther away. I know this map looks weird, its a dark map of california, but i want to draw your attention to that red dot right there, thats the ranch hire. Thats how far away this is. But theres a northerly flow bringing that stuff down to the bay area, and most of it is piling up down in the south bay. So san jose, theres your view. We took a Long Distance view out over the ocean. But looking just at downtown san jose, thats not pretty. And most of that is haze with smoke mixed in. Thats some of the smoke pulled in. The ranch hire fire is the latest culprit. And the air quality is moderate for most of us, but in Santa Clara County, specifically downtown san jose are unhealthy for sensitive groups, and we have a forecast tomorrow with most of us in the moderate level. And the thing about a forecast like this, it takes the average for an entire day, so for Santa Clara County averaging it out over 24 hours moderate, but if you step outside right now in downtown san jose, its unhealthy for sensitive groups, and thats something good to keep in mind when we talk about air quality sensors. Theres a bunch of different ways to measure it, and right now its not that great, so go easy on yourself outside. Lets put some numbers in front of this. 73 in concord right now. 58 in San Francisco.
