This happened near mckee road and the alum rock neighborhood. Police responded to the scene before 2 30 pm. Following reports of an armed man who was apparently walking near a shopping center. Police dispatch recordings tell what happened next. Investigators tell us one officer opened fire. The suspect was hit and later died at the hospital. The man has it to be identified. We are working on details for the incident. It marks the citys third Police Shooting so far this year. A deadly shooting on a bta light rail platform in san jose. A private Security Guard shot and killed a man who was allegedly threating people with knives. Leonard ramirezs live at the station with the story. Reporter the bta says it is the first time one of their private contracted Security Officers has shot and killed a suspect and it happened right here on the platform. Apparently in front of passengers. The shooting happened on a still busy bta platform at about 8 40 pm. Sheriffs patrol units were called to the santa teresa light rail station on reports of a Man Threatening passengers with knives. Investigators say a private Security Guard hired by bta from allied universal confronted the suspect. The Security Officer gave commands to drop the knife and drop the weapon, substance of that nature. Which the suspect refuse. That suspect then quickly advanced toward that Security Officer, holding onto those knives and weapons. And got within 5 to 10 feet of that Security Officer prior to the shots being fired. The suspect was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Investigators recovered two knives, a pair of scissors and the court which the suspect was allegedly brandishing. Bta says there was minimal disruption to the system because the incident happened at the end of the line. This afternoon, passengers were still learning of the shooting. Its unfortunate someone has to lose your life because they cant behave on a public transport there. Reer bta as has contracted since 2014 and provides Armed Security during late night and Early Morning hours. There has been a recent escalation of violence incidents on bta trains and buses including batteries and assaults. There were five violent incidents in june. Seven in july and 10 in august. 10 in september. That have been a total of 61 violent incident so far this year. Olga garza said she has been through incidents on board that scared her. Allied universal did send out a notice this afternoon and a statement saying they are cooperating fully with the a clcounsheriffs department. Reporting live in san jose. Allied universal said 85 Security Officers were hired in 2009 to patrol the bta system and supplement sheriff transit deputies. It says the armed officers are state certified to carry guns, pepper gray and batons during patrols on foot and by vehicle. Moments ago pg e gave an update on the part restoration numbers. Most people impacted by the latest blackout have power back up. Not everybody but most do. Still remaining in the dark are those customers near the kincaid fire. Nearly 6000 customers remain without service. 34 affected counties now have power backup. We have been in contact with Meteorology Team and have looked forward to the next seven days. And we do not anticipate any Public Safety power shut off events. Some communities get power back on. Theres one group of vulnerable residents who say they were left alone in the dark. It is an independent Living Environment but when the lights were not the elderly residents say they were totally on their own. We needed help right away and we were abandoned. We were totally abandon. Reporter jeanette lives at the villas and as a caregiver to several residents. She said Battery Powered lights soon died leaving corridors and staircases pitch black. Reporter a resident reportedly hurt her knee tripping in the dark over another woman lying on the floor at the bottom. It was basically an abandoned building. Reporter marie houck heads up the local Homeowners Association and was called by one of the residents. She was shocked by what she saw and the fact that the building managers just left for the weekend, leaving the seniors to fend for themselves. They left with no plans in place for how the seniors would be able to get in and out of the building during the power outage. Which was predicted to last several days.
