The things that has happened since the Great Recession is hollowing out of the middle of the labor market. What that means is growth that has been happening has been happening in the highestpaid, highest skilled jobs. Unfortunately the lowest paid jobs have a shrinking. So we focus on making very deep connections with employers in those sectors that do still offer middleaged jobs and then building up Career Pathways, Training Programs in partnership with those employers and health sectors. I will just tell you a little bit more about what that looks like. Looks like connecting people with skill building training, the hard skills, Technical Skills and soft skills for communication skills. Followed by a paid Work Experience in partnership with the employer often paid by the employer and then a direct connection to employment, with a goal of getting people into jobs somewhere in between 40 and 80,000 a year. So communities throughout the country face this issue and every community has a lot in common with every other community. At the same time every other community is unique. I want you to talk a little bit about how you understand our local Bay Area Community and make decisions about what sectors it moves into to form partnerships and then contribute to the economic work life of the community at large. That is a great question and a really big question. Couple of things about that are first of all that the bay area economy, in terms of the inequality that i was just describing and be hollowing out of the middle, ebay area economy is probably the most acute case in the country. In that sense it makes the work here we are doing in partnership with employers a really great testing ground for developing programs that can work and solve that problem. We believe that if it can work here, it should be able to work pretty much everywhere. Some of the key factors to think about and thinking about the bay area economy, are looking at sectors that still offer a High Percentage of middle skill, middleaged jobs. Some examples of that are healthcare, but also utilities in the public sector. Another piece of why those particular industries are still offering so many middle skill middleaged jobs is for the most part those jobs cant be off short or insured, they have to be done by people here. Public sector also have the advantage of being fairly recession proof. That means Good Investments for us. Think you and you used an interesting word. Most people are familiar with the term offshore, which means a job leaves the country. So what is ensure . So in shoring is a dynamic we think about in San Francisco and multiple towns across the bay area. Many companies, in response to the increasing cost of living and course of doing business, moving jobs that can be moved to lower cost areas of the country. Ic, so a job might leave the bay area for another part of california. Is exactly right. So let me take a quick break and come back in just a moment here on mosaic. We would like to automatically so countrymen and becca rosenbaum was the director of healthcare. Welcome back lisa and welcome back appeared becca, lets jump in and ask you what are the Healthcare Programs i jps . So we have a really diverse portfolio of Healthcare Programs. I think of our Health Programs in two different ways. We serve people who are already licensed or certified in the field and people that dont have any Healthcare Experience but want to get a foot in the door. We serve a wide range of occupations. We work with medical assistance, dental assistants, ill be ends, rns and medical administrative assistance. Is occupations we have seen a high demand of in the bay area and also have good entrylevel wages. Are Refresher Programs are really designed for people that already have a certificate come already are licensed, but maybe people have taken a little bit of time off without a license or certificate and werent able to find work in that field. We have targeted shortterm trainings for those folks to refresh the clinical skills, get their confidence back up and practice the soft skills and please employers really want. To support them finding a job afterward. Are other Training Programs are more for folks not certified and trained already in the dental assistant and medical assistant programs. And our medical assistant training as well. Folks again are going through a Clinical Training program. Sometimes in partnership with a local Training Provider like San Francisco state. Where supplementing the training with soft skills, can really targeted toward the employer. And then a workplace money experience again getting a lot of coaching and support, Wraparound Services at the time and support with a job search at the end. Lico was talking about jv esses gap and the context of middleaged jobs and types of jobs. You describes a cna and that sort of thing. I know from anybody out there who wants a job, at a certain point when the rubber hits the road is getting the job. I wonder if you can talk a little bit about that piece of the puzzle. I know jvs is involved with at the point where somebody lands in the place is committing to the job, getting the paycheck, how does the structure work at jvs . We really integrate that training and support throughout our program, so it really starts before the program even starts. We really talk with employers about what does somebody need to get into a job, both the hard skills, do they need to be able to draw blood, do they need to call a patient, what should they say in an interview and what do they need to say to land a job. We integrate that all throughout our programs, the people are receiving it alongside the harder skills. We also bring employers and every step of the way. Many programs are targeted at a specific employer and they are actually select us and no kind of skills they are looking for. Once we bring people into a Training Program there are set up because the employer has bought into this group of people. Throughout the training where providing things like networking, training, sitting down and writing a resume, how to apply online and then once the program ends many participants have offers from an employer because they really have shown what they can do on the job. A hiring manager can see that they are trained in this specific setting and they have already really shown what they can do on the job. For those still looking for work, they have access to a one onone jobsearch support from one of our staff, Group Workshops and a whole slew of services around how to practice those skills and keep themselves current with volunteer opportunities, practicing mock interviews with our volunteers, really everything that they need in order to land that job. And once they land the job, we are again Touching Base with folks to make sure they can be successful within their first 90 days and first year of work. They can always give us a call if they are encountering challenges. Believe it or not we have just one minute le, but i know that jvs works so intensely across the spectrum is so complex from a person who needs a job to a skill set to employee or employer who will hire, then the success of working. I want you to talk just a little bit about in just a concrete way, who are the employers that jvs works with and maybe mention a programmer to. Sure, absolutely. We work with a lot of employers in the bay area. Some of the bigger name employers are Kaiser Permanente, cpm c, you cff, those are our longstanding partners in the Hospital System strictly also work with private practices and Small Community clinics which are really successful. We want to make sure our participants have a choice in where to work and choose the environment and workplace that is right for them. We try to have a real variety of employer partnerships. Where in the middle of a wonderful conversation with jvs and we would like to reintroduce you to lisa countrymen, jvss strategic officer and introduce you to the administrator for Kaiser Permanente San Francisco medical center. Welcome back lisa and welcome gi. Lets just jump in. Can you talk a little bit about the partnership that Kaiser Permanente has with jvs . Absolutely. We have been working together now for probably 2 1 2 years. It started kind of out of a need that lease identified, the hollowing out of the workforce. What we found was we would have many medical assistance who would take a job in San Francisco, but after six months or a year they were transferred to a location closer to their home. That caused churn and churn results in people not being as active at their jobs and is also expensive because you are constantly training people. I met abby snake, the chief executive officer for a jvs function and we started talking and she told me and they Refresher Program we were able to help develop the curriculum and they worked with us. We could put pieces of it that are particular to Kaiser Permanente in the curriculum. And also, they were going to reuit ound the San Francisco and in the city of San Francisco in particular. The experiment was that if we could get people who lived nearby, we would be able to reduce the churn and help develop a community and so many ways by providing jobs and when we provide jobs there is also healthcare and other things that we can do by investing in the community. It really was a win win win and we are very happy we have had people in our court, medical assistance and its working really well and they are very well trained. They not only know clinical skills, they know the soft skills Like Customer Service and we teach them about our computer systems. Its working very well. Kaiser permanente, i think a lot of people know, have origins and Worker Health and community health. I know that value has stuck with kaiser, certainly in the bay area. So im wondering, in terms of how you look at what you call the turning and lisa talked earlier about ensuring, do you find that if you tend to hire people that are in the community the job keeps them anchored to the community . Is that part of putting stability in the workforce healthcare sector . Absolutely. So far its only been a couple years, but we have been tracking our numbers and there definitely is lower churn. People are staying and i have to say some of these well Trained Medical assistance are some of our best medical assistance. So we are very happy with it. Lisa, can you talk a little bit about how people come into the system. If they come into a program directly linked to a job that they may or may not land at kaiser or someplace else, how do you educate people with their expectations and what they are being trained to do and what the job expectation might be. Of course, we do very targeted outreach for all of our Career Pathways programs. For a program like a partnership with kaiser of course it helps immensely in our outreach that kaiser is such an attractive employer. People really want to work with kaiser, it has a reputation as being a great place to work. I think that draws a lot of people. We get sometimes 200300 applications to be a training cohort of 20. We set expectations from the beginning that what they are stepping into is a very robust Training Program. Includes classroom training, a paid Work Experience, but not a guarantee of employment i kaiser. So they understand they have the opportunity to kind of prove themselves in that moment and if they dont get an opportunity at kaiser immediately after, they can continue to apply but we will work with them to look at other opportunities as well with our other fantastic employer programs. If someone is interested in the healthcare sector programs, how do they actually make themselves available . They can go to our website and get connected to the Healthcare Programs through their. Thing and submit an intake form. For kaiser itself, what are some of the positions kaiser is looking for . Right now we are particularly focused on medical assistance. We are increasing the number of medical assistance we have been hiring in the last couple of years and find that really helps the position in providing great care. Thats the one were working with jvs on. Certainly we have other positions like rns as well as other areas of administration. Thank you so much. So lisa, i know there are different ways jvs lets the Community Know what it is doing. I want you to talk more about how jvs lets the public know its work. Sure, opportunities like this are an occasion to do that. But really our big event is strictly business, which is our annual luncheon. Thats our big fundraising event for the year. And its really a celebration of the people who have benefited from our programs and an opportunity to showcase our fantastic employer partnerships. And she will be honored as one of our employees of the year this year. Congratulations. What brought you to jvs . I was struggling to find jobs. I had been away for my medical job for a couple years and when i started applying it was really hard for me to find jobs. Employers will say she is three years off of a job and wont call me. Or we went in another direction, thank you for the application. And i was in this program that helps women who are single moms and they told me about jvs. And i liked that, well i liked the opportunities they were giving me to do the externship, which was one of the big parts of it. And then also they gave me the opportunity to refresh my skills. I was a medical assistant, but they were giving me time to prep myself before i actually went to the job. But it became more than that, it became more than just a Refreshment Program for a little time and then go ahead your way. They helped me from teaching me how to do an interview to how to dress up to actually doing the interview and the opportunity to do the externship at kaiser. I am grateful i got hired at kaiser. Thats wonderful. So what is a medical assistant . And medical assistant is a person who helps the doctor in the back office. Withholding the instruments, prepping for procedures, rooming patients, also the people i got a hospital, they have a consult with a medical assistant. The first person, they either register them or grab them and put them in the rooms so the doctor can see them as well. The medical assistant, i will just jump in, it plays a really Important Role in influencing and setting the tone for the whole patient experience. That is part of the reason why partners we work with like kaiser are so concerned about having medical assistance and have a really deep grounding in patient communication and all of those soft skills. Because they represent and standin for the organization. And reminds me that healthcare, we all know, is so complex and the complexity can also be basically the way in which a patient arrives to a Doctors Office and when they are waiting in the waiting room and their name is called and they showup into the room and people typically are nervous, they dont know what to do, they are not there because they are well. Theyre there because they have a concern. Im just wondering, from your experience and your years as a medical assistant, how do you understand the ways in which people need to calm down . Others are in ways in which people need to understand how to calm down . So they are more coaching to the doctor, they are able to listen. What are several things for how people need to kind of get to a place of being calm once they are inside the office . I dont know if calm will be , they will not become. But jvs actually taught me that if you are calm yourself, if you presented yourself with a calm manner, they will immediately calm down. Because most of the patients are not there because they want to be in the hospital. Is going on, something brought them there, so they have to take time out of their job, all of this and some of their are in pain. I remember one of my coaches, or my teachers in jvs taught me okay, never of all things we have to stop. Am so starry. In the sentence, can you say it . Just breathed. Breathe calmly and your patient will respond to calmly. I think its a wonderful way to end our conversation about healthcare, just breathe and stay centered.
