Coming up the teachers being priced out of bay area communities they educate. And right now we are seeing a few scattered showers. This is san jose right over my shoulder. Its hazy. Its a little bit wet. Sgle and as you hit the roadways this morning you might be dealing with some slick surfaces. Weve got a few trouble spots along 580. One in the altamonte pass. Coming up. Juul took 12. 8 billion from big tobacco. Markets ecigarettes with kid friendly flavors and uses nicotine to addict them. 5 million kids use ecigarettes. Juul is following big tobaccos playbook. And now, juul is pushing prop c to overturn ecigarette protections. Vote no on juul. No on big tobacco. No on prop c. Welcome back. 5 13 this morning. Now original series project home. Most of us have that one teacher who changed our lives forever. But these days a lack of Affordable Housing is pushing educators out of the communities they teach disconnecting them from their students. A teacher trying to make ends meet. Every morning before the sun rises, megan calusa is up. Next she transfers to an sfmta muni train and then she walks up both ways to school. Its a huge chunk of the day three hours. Its 1 8 of my whole day. She didnt always have to endure this 3 hour commute. She used to live in San Francisco. And every year. We got our first notification it was 200 and it was like uh. Her rent in fran went up so she left the community shes worked in for 15 years to become a super commuter. We got our rent increase of 400 that was kind of the moment we knew we just had to move. The entire state is facing a Teacher Shortage but in the bay area its especially bad. District wide, the turnover rate is 21 . Anywhere from 300 to 700 educators leave every year. In my ideal world, my home is near my students homes and we live in the same community and were real neighbors. When she lived in San Francisco, every once in awhile megan students would stop her in the mission district. Miss calusa im not sure which one of my kids you are all grown up as youre passing by. But now because she lives across the bay she doesnt have time to stay at afterschool events and after her commute he doesnt have time to invest in her new community in oakland. Thats a huge part of the educator life is being apart of that School Community so thats suffering greatly. The district has steadily increased salaries to try to keep its teachers. Back in 2016 the average teacher made 62,000 a year. Now the average salary is 83,000. But in San Francisco that still means theyre low income. Low income in San Francisco for one person means making less than 90,450 a year. So housing instability for educators is now quickly rising to kind of if you will a crisis level. Peter cohen is theco director. His organization releaseded a study this fall entitled who will teach our children . Folks are realizing that a teacher who is struggling with their housing is not going to be as good as their job. The study highlights how most teachers cannot afford to rent here. 83,000 a year paying rent less than 2,075 a month. In a city where the average 1 bedroom goes for more than 3,700. It really enriches kids educational experience when they have a connection to a teacher whos kind of with them as they develop. Those teachers have to be respected and protected. Low income and black communities particularly the bay view schools are being hit the hard et. At willy Brown Middle School 76 of students are associate owe socio economically disadvantaged. Thats more than doubled the district average. In addition to raising salaries the district is now adding housing. 100 teachers will be allowed to live here. The 44 million project is one of many teach every Housing Solutions being built on district property. You want to believe that. Its something i think we all want to believe is theres a place for us here and its going to work out you know. Our wages are somehow going to keep pace with the housing thats available to us. For more than a decade thousands of teachers have learned the hard way they cant afford this place. Thats what megans commuting all these miles for. Desperately trying to avoid becoming this districts next drop out. This is the city i love and the community i love and to think that im being pushed out against my will is its been really hard. I love this place. I love coming to work every day. I love going in schools and seeing kids and to think that some day i cant do it, its a very difficult reality to live in every day. Stgs 5. Kpix 5. Today marks 30 years since the catastrophic moment of an earthquake. So i think all of us remember what we were doing, where we were when the earthquake hit and struck and of course this week we had an earthquake in the east bay. I think this is a very good time to really talk about how you pack your emergency earthquake kit or to at least to review it and joining me now is erika the San FranciscoFire Departments quarter. The neighborhood Response Teams coordinator and were going to go through one of our managers emergency earthquake kit. Weve pulled some items out to talk about. Lets go to the food here. Right. Were all going to be hungry. Grechen chose food thats freezedried. You can get it in a camping store. Your local Hardware Store may have that as well. This is great because its very light weight. Another thing grechen planned for is injuries. She does have a small first aid kit. One thing i would recommend is to add additional gauze and tape you really want to have something to be able to stop bleeding. One issue we had with the wild fires was the air quality. After an earthquake there might be debris that kicks up a lot of dust. And as we talked off the air a little bit earlier if you have trouble breathing or a condition like that you want to check first. But when there are large particles floating in the air these are great to have. I give grechen an a and like i said just a little more focused on being able to address cuts and bruises but she really did think of everything that she would personally need. We did talk a little bit about having amfm radio. Alerts on still the Old Fashioned tried and true way anyone can access by texting your zip code to 888777. I was so disappointed after that happened. Obviously i was a kid at the time i didnt realize how catastrophic and damaging it was. Yeah, just seeing those on tv it was just amazing. I wasnt watching the world series but i watched the news later on. I was still kind of young. Yeah, my husband grew up here and he was in san jose and remembers it vividly. Santa cruz mountains. Very scary. And today is our wedding anniversary. I know. Now to the roadways right now as you get a look along 580 westbound. Weve had a handful of accidents on 580. One of them was just reported near hacienda blocking a lane it looks like they got it out of lanes pretty quickly there that earlier crash which is a little closer to that 680 interchange. We do have a crash in the clearing stages. We did have reports of it being a motorcycle involved in that accident. It looks like its also in the clearing stages. Its still a slow ride as you work your way westbound connecting 205 to 580. Youve got stop and go conditions. Pockets of slowing as you work your way towards the dublin interchange. There is a trouble spot. Used quite a bit for the morning drive. Lanes are blocked so try to avoid that area if you can. Checking your drive times 40 minutes. That is our slowest spot. It looks like highway 4 is starting to low down as well. The good news is as you look at 80 here only 19 minutes. So traffic still moving okay as you head through there. Northbound 101 out of the south bay it looks like traffic is starting to add up once you get past that youre looking good on the rest of the peninsula this was an area where we did see some slick surfaces. Finally making its way out of the bay area. We got to really zoom in. For the most part they are through our area making their way out and its going to be nice, clear and beautiful behind it. You can see its really starting to clear that is going to start to change moving into the afternoon hours. Currently livermore 58. And 59 degrees in concord. It will be a slightly cooler day today and tomorrow breezy conditions in the afternoon. Mostly clear in the afternoon. But then we do have more changes ahead for the weekend. With that wind we do have a High Surf Advisory that goes into effect by about noon today. So just be careful if youre out there probably a little bit too cold to get into the water for most of you. But if youre out there taking pictures be aware theres a rip current risk. Sunrise today. 7 20 a. M. 6 28 p. M. Those days are starting to get shorter and shorter. And in the far north bay were going to get a little bit warmer and cooler. 66 degrees in clear lake your 7 day forecast is going to be pretty much cloudy to start. That breezy condition again today. But then tomorrow will be about the same as far as temperatures are concerned cooling off with a few more on saturday and then move into the beginning of next week where were going to start to see a little bit of a warming trend by the beginning of next week.
