Student activist from a halfcentury ago are taking part in the milestone event at san jose state university. What they did at a Graduation Ceremony that changed the campus forever. Good evening. Reporter the last time this group of people Work Together they were making history. We believed at the time that we could change society. Reporter one of the student organizers of the 1968 student protest over the underrepresentation of mexican americans on the College Campuses and the overrepresentation of chicano agile teams in the vietnam war. The graduating seniors of 68 that were chicanos were less than 1 . Real inequity there. Conversely chicano over 22 . Reporter tensions grew a student demands for Committee Outreach chicano studies courses and more chicano faculty were ignored. It came to a head on graduation day. San jose police were ready for a riot. The students staged a peaceful protest and walked out of their own Graduation Ceremony and cross the street to the spartan track and field to hold their own chicano commencement a tradition that indoors at san jose state and around california to this day. I think history has shown we were on the right side of history. Reporter they held a symposium on campus with many of the original activists reflected on what happened that day. They took us seriously. They started making changes. Of course with pressure. They really did. Reporter three months after the walkout program such as the equal Opportunity Program enabled more students from low income families to enroll. They could take out Student Loans which i did. And take out you had some grants available. We were able to take classes. Reporter today they are an ethnically diverse campus. As of the fall of 2018 is 30. 4 . According to the u. S. Census bureau san jose state is the 13th most Diverse College campus in the country. Continuing our coverage of the subtle rich fire in northern los angeles.
