Trump use your power for good do it now, donald do it now this mornings eye opener is presented by toyota. Lets go places. Welcome to cbs this morning. Im Anthony Mason with Tony Dokoupil. Gayle king is off so cbs this Morning National correspondent Jericka Duncan is here with us. As you wake up in the west Hurricane Dorian is taking its last shot at the u. S. It made landfall at Cape Hatteras, North Carolina a short time ago. Its first landfall since causing at least 30 deaths in the bahamas. You can see violent winds ripping into the American Flag on North Carolinas Frying Pan Shoals over night. Dorian was down graded to a category 1 overnight but is still making trouble on its way out to sea, causing life threatening flash floods and up to six feet of storm surge. Omar villafranca is in kitty hawk, North Carolina on the northern part of the outer banks. Omar, where you are what are the conditions . Reporter good morning. We are here in dare county in the outer banks. As you can see, dorian is here. It made landfall about an hour away from us at Cape Hatteras. We are feeling the effects where were standing. We woke up under a tornado watch but now the concern is whats happening offshore. Let me point you to the ocean right now. Because it is alive and well. We are starting to see some serious waves pop up here. Before they were kind of staying a little further back but now they are absolutely coming up. The rain bands are also getting thicker. They are expecting about a foot of water. But the storm surge here could be 2 to 4 feet, further down looking at 4 to 7 feet. Youd see these homes behind me right now. They are very close to the water so any amount of water going over that could be a problem for that area. There is a mandatory evacuation in place here in dare county. Theres also a curfew. But authorities are saying you cannot leave at this point. If youre here you have to stay. You have to hunker down. What everybody is keeping an eye on, right now, is this. The water keeps on getting closer. They are hoping the beach can contain it. Were not exactly sure how long that is going to last. People have boarded up their windows. They have sand bagged their doors. They got rid of all the beach equipment so it doesnt become a flying projectile but at this point as the water comes up, were just waiting for dorians wrath to finally hit this area of the outer banks. Well watch the conditions and see how they develop throughout the day. Omar, thank you. Dorians eyewall passed over beaufort, North Carolina earlier this morning. Jonathan vigliotti is there. What are you seeing on the coast . Reporter good morning. Wind is still the main event here at the height of the storm where we rode it out here on radio island we had gusts up to 90 Miles Per Hour. Right now were getting gusts around 50 to 60 Miles Per Hour and that is still fast enough to pick up some of the debris like this. This cooler is easily over 200 pounds. Throwing it like a toy. The wind also whipping up tornadoes. Yesterday 13 touched down around the area. One of them in emerald isle where we were yesterday. It tore through a Mobile Home Park there destroying dozens. We spoke with one person who actually rode it out with his wife inside his bathroom. They were there preparing their home for the hurricane. Right now the wind is actually causing enough damage to trees and power lines were told about 200,000 customers are still without power. The tornado warnings, those have been lifted but flash flooding is still a major concern. Weve gotten about 12 inches of rain. We expect to get a few more inches and officials are saying that is enough to swallow cars who are caught in any of those floods on the road. A curfew is currently still in effect. That means the roads are only open to emergency vehicles. Officials telling drivers to stay off the road. Jonathan, thank you very much. Dorian gave coastal South Carolina a beating yesterday and this morning charleston is starting to survey the damage there. Dorians eye passed within 55 miles bringing heavy rain and wind gusts of up to more than 70 miles an hour. Jamie yuccas is in charleston. What are you seeing out there right now . Reporter were in Historic Downtown charleston. What im seeing is that these streets, yesterday during flash flooding, were covered with water. Now you just see the remnants of it today. Thats the good news. The bad news is all of the debris in this area. You see trees like this, there are limbs all throughout the area on roadways so people are having to clean that up. The other problem is a number of street signs and utility poles are either bent or in the roadway so workers are going to be working to get those back up before cleanup is completed. I can tell you that there was so much rain yesterday. It came down very, very hard. In video you can see a lot of the flooding that ended up occurring in parking lots, on streets. It inundated 7 inches of rain. Cities are using pumps to try to get the water out. A lot of people had sand bags around their homes trying to keep the water out. They did a pretty good job. It wasnt as bad as people thought it was going to be. Winds also a big problem. We saw gusts in the area up to 70 Miles Per Hour. That is why you have the trees, utility poles, and power lines come down. Just to the north of here a number of tornadoes happened in little river and myrtle beach knocking homes. The governor, though, has lifted mandatory evacuations in three counties. The only problem will be if they come back they are going to have to deal with debris. A lot of people here also still without power. About 140,000. Tony . All right. Jamie, the cleanup begins. To meteorologist megan glaros of our chicago station wbbmtv has been tracking dorians path all week. This is actually about as close as it comes. We barely had a landfall. It happened at 8 35 eastern time right along Cape Hatteras. You can see the storm now accelerating away at this point we know the movement is going to be on off to the north and east wih this storm. Away from land now. Category 1 still as of the latest advisory. Winds to 90 miles an hour. The movement is northeast about 14 Miles Per Hour. Pretty quickly, its pretty far out into the atlantic. Its picking up forward speed. The concern at this point will remain the flash flooding concern. Winds starting to taper down as the center moves away from the storm. Were still going to be looking at the potential for flash flooding continuing around the carolina coast line. Now while it is a little cooler in the northeast, the storm has opened the door to some intense heat across the south. Look at this. 101 in tallahassee. Weve got 100 in jackson. About 101 in tyler, texas. So very hot in the south while in the east we breathe a sigh of relief as the storm leaves. Tony . That is hot but at least hurricane free. Thank you very much. In our next half hour well look at efforts to help tens of thousands of hurricane victims in the northern bahamas. Chef jose andres wants to serve thousands of meals a day but it is tough with so much damage. That is ahead on cbs this morning. Firefighters in Northern California are battling a massive wildfire. The Red Bank Fire exploded to 6,000 acres overnight. In Southern California flames from a fire are burning dangerously close to homes. Carter evans is some 60 miles southeast of los angeles. Carter, whats the biggest concern there right now . Reporter theyre keeping an eye on the hot spots because the wind could pick up later today. You can get an idea how close the homes were to fire danger by looking at the red fire retard all over the street and these homes as well, the landscaping. So far this fire has burned about 2,000 acres and is only 10 contained. Crews raced to beat back flames that reached the fence of this Southern California home, one of hundreds threatened when heavy winds kicked up the tanaja fire thursday afternoon. All of a sudden it started taking off. Reporter some 800 firefighters facing 90degree temperatures attacked the fire with bulldozers on the ground and water dropping helicopters from above. We did have a full strike team of resources deployed. We had firefighters on the back yards with hoses and they were protecting those structures. Reporter some people also hosed down their own homes in an effort to keep them safe. Crews cleared out material that might quickly catch fire, tossing pillows and cushions into the pool. Police officers and firefighters patroled neighborhoods, warning families it was time to go. They dont know which way its going to go so they just recommend we get out of here as quick as possible. Reporter two homes were damaged. Firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the flames on this house before they spread. Officials say its still a dangerous situation. This is a rapidly evolving incident. So we are asking people to stay out of the area. Reporter the hill sides around these homes havent burned in more than 20 years but firefighters are making significant progress. Its not clear when theyll allow people back in their homes. Schools in this area are still closed today because of poor air quality. Former zimbabwe leader Robert Mugabe is being remembered as a onetime liberatore who ruled over his countrys decline. His death was announced on twitter overnight by the current president. Mugabe took power in 1980 after a long war ended white minority rule in his country. For nearly four decades he was the only leader zimbabweans ever knew. His tenure was marked by violent repression, increasing poverty, and unrest. He was forced to resign in 2017. The car bomb in kabul yesterday killed 12 people and wounded 42 others. Its part of a string of attacks launched by the taliban this week as the militant group reportedly edges closer to a peace deal with the u. S. Charlie dagata is in the afghan capital. Charlie, why is the taliban launching these attacks now . Reporter well, good morning, anthony. Theyre launching these attacks now because these peace negotiations are under way. While they may be talking peace in doha, here in afghanistan theyre still waging war in the most brutal way. This is a video from yesterdays attack. Not far from the u. S. Embassy, killing that u. S. Service member. You mentioned and another nato soldier as well as at least ten civilians near the u. S. Embassy. 16 u. S. Service members have been killed in afghanistan this year. Now, as for that peace deal under way, the government here has been completely shut out of talks between the u. S. And the taliban. To underscore that, the president was shown a copy of the draft but he wasnt allowed to keep it. In a statement after the recent attacks, he said peace with a group that is still killing innocent people is meaningless. Tony . Charlie dagata in afghanistan for us, thank you. We are learning new information in the case of a missing connecticut mom from the latest arrest warrant. Michelle troconis was charged with evidence tampering for a second time yesterday. Her boyfriend fotis dulos was charged again for the same crime just a day earlier. Both are implicated in the disappearance of Jennifer Dulos. Cbs this Morning Saturday cohost Michelle Miller is here today. Police accused fotis dulos of committing a, quote, crime against jennifer and say he and his girlfriend disposed of the evidence and invented alibis. The new details come more than three months since Jennifer Dulos vanished. Michelle troconis said nothing thursday as she left the Connecticut State Police barracks on bond. She had turned herself in on charges in connection with the disappearance of connecticut mom Jennifer Dulos. Andrew bowman is her attorney. Remember that michelle is presumed innocent and she should be. Reporter one day earlier fotis dulos was also arrested for a second time and charged with evidence tampering. Later released on 500,000 bond. Its an exhausting fight. I love my children. Thats about it. Reporter both dulos and troconis previously pleaded not guilty on charges of tampering with evidence and hindering the prosecution. Neither have been charged with murder. But investigators believe the vanished mother of five was murdered on may 24th. In a new 38page arrest warrant, police say they found jennifers dna on the seats of a work truck dulos had been driving. According to the warrant, police asked troconis why dulos would wash the truck after jennifer disappeared. She told them, well, obviously all the evidence says because you showed me the picture of the blood in the door. Its because the body of jennifer at some point was in there. Cbs news analyst rikki kleman. Both of them should be worried because at some point there is always that possibility that the police could decide they want to go all the way even without a body and bring a murder charge. Reporter in june we sat down with duloss Attorney Norm Pattis who told us the case against his client was built on speculation and hysteria. Jennifer is an extremely sympathetic person right now. The nation has rallied behind her because she is a missing mom of five beautiful children. That doesnt mean my client is the villain. Reporter dulos attorney told cbs news in a statement he wishes the state police spent more time looking for jennifer and less trying to build a case against his client. Dulos is expected to be back in Court Next Week and his Attorney Says he will plead not guilty to that new charge. You really feel for the children involved. Five of them. Thank you, michelle. You traveled with a Group Delivering aid to one of the bahamas Barrier Islands . Reporter yes, we traveled with Chef Jose Andres, who is feeding people. By now youve seen the images of the devastation. I want you to hear the stories. That is what is so important here that will convey to you the type of humanitarian crisis that continues this morning and is only getting worse. The chef had a seat on his helicopter. It was packed with food. He allowed us to go with him. Heres what we saw. We took off from nassau with the helicopter full of hope. So much water, fruit, and food that some of it was nearly in Chef Jose Andres lap. He wasnt mad about that. He was unhappy with the pace. I blame myself. Today if things go well well deliver 7500 meals but for me this is half of what we are supposed to be doing all right. Reporter the first place we landed was Green Turtle Key in the abaco islands. People were waiting as the chef off loaded food and we went to ask people what they need. Homes. Reporter homes, she yelled. In this community of about 550 people, it looked as though most every structure was either damaged or destroyed. Including the food stores. We need ice. Power. We need some generators. We just need help. A lot of help. Reporter that is why the delivery from chef andres matters. He didnt just bring food. You ask for it you got it. Reporter from here the chef headed for treasure kay. He landed on a tennis court and was welcomed with caution. This right here has only been allowed to be used so far for the coast guard. So you need those things. Yes. Do you have or no . Do you have the capacity to cook it . Yes. Reporter before leaving we asked volunteer fireman greg johnson to assess the conditions for us. Its deplorable. People are getting violent, angry, upset. Were trying to get our government officials, if you guys do see this, please come down here and show your faces. We need you guys to show your faces here. So the people can understand and know that you guys care. At this point in time we are on our own and the u. S. Is the only place that is helping us. Reporter this morning im starting to see more police and military from the bahamas getting on airplanes presumably heading in that direction. Listen, there is good news. The chefs organization, world central kitchen rented a ship from florida. It arrived last night and has 20,000 meals prepared and a lot of food to prepare even more meals. Let me just say this. What you saw in that piece really conveys what is going on here. There is no real leader sort of in the field so the chef is landing wherever he can find a spot and people there are sort of taking on leadership roles. The chef said yesterday ive been asking the government, tell me where to go. Tell me where you need food to be delivered and ill go there specifically. But he says as of right now hes not getting an answer so he is going wherever he hears food is needed, landing, and trying to give it out if theyll take it. David begnaud in the bahamas. Thank you. Starbucks, wendys, and target have already asked customers not to openly carry guns in their stores unless they are Law Enforcement officers but none have implemented an outright ban. Congress not acting corporations are. Interesting to see how they enforce that request. Welcome back to cbs this morning. Ahead we are watching hurricane conditions in North Carolina with dorian taking one last swipe at the u. S. Plus, we hear from two americans who rode out the storm in the bahamas and gave their families one big scare. And former u. N. Ambassador Samantha Power comes to studio 57. First, heres todays eye opener at eight. Hurricane dorian is taking a last shot at the u. S. It made landfall at Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Gusts at 50 to 60 Miles Per Hour and thats fast enough to pick up debris like this. Let me point you to the ocean right now because it is alive and well. We are starting to see some serious waves. Its all thenhis area. You see trees like this, they are limbs all throughout the area on roadways. The concern at this point will remain the flash flooding concern. Winds starting to taper down. You can really get an idea of how close these homes were to fire danger by look at the red fire retardant all over the street here. Police accuse fotis dulos of committing a crime against jennifer and say he and his girlfriend then disposed of the evidence and invented alibis. Brantley drives one deep to right field everybodys heading home 119. Michael brantley matching his career high with his 20th home run, and he sends all astros fans home happy with a walkoff tworun shot to right. This mornings eye opener is presented by toyota. Lets go places. I love the walkoff home run because there is no eye kwefl lent in any other profession. There is not a walkoff email at the end of the day. Did you ever hit a walkoff . Never a homer. Maybe a blve. Im tdokoup here with Anthony Mason. Gayle king is off. Jericka duncan is with us. Hurricane dorian, the eye of hurricane arolina. The eye of the storm passed directly over Cape Hatteras around 8 30 local time this morning with wind gusts near 90 miles an hour. Some areas could see as much as a foot of rain and storm surge of six feet. The hurricane has also caused tornados, including this one caught on a dor bell camera. You can see this home being blown over. Omar villafranca is in kitty hawk on the outer banks. Reporter we are here in dare county, North Carolina, and so is dorian. Let me give you a look over here. The storm is basically pushing the sea up and over this beach. They are expecting a storm surge in this area two to four feet. Farther down in the outer banks they are talking four to seven feet. That may not seem like much, but if you consider that there are homes over here right by the ocean, that could become a big problem for them. Storm surge, of course, that only causes the most damage, but kills the most people. They are expecting 12 inches of rain. We have seen some of the rain bands go through, and they are thick. The goggles are on because as the wind speeds pick up almost on cue, it feels like you are in a sandblaster out here. And its almost painful. Some people have come out trying to see it. Automatically turn around and high tail it back to cover. Here in dare county, a mandatory evacuation order. If you are here, authorities are saying you are not going anywhere. You are staying here. But a quick look at the ocean. You can see the concern is the coming storm surge. We will see what happens. Omar. Thanks. Dorian is moving up the carolina coast at 15 miles an hour leaving a mess behind it. Jonathan vigliotti is in beaufort, North Carolina, which was pounded by dorian last night. Jonathan, what are the conditions like where you are . Reporter anthony, the wind is still really the big event here right now. You can see some of the power of it when you look at the water behind me. We are gngnats at 50 to 60 Miles Per Hour, which i can tell you Strong Enough to turn some of the debris into projectiles. We have moved a little bit closer to try to avoid it. We rode out this storm on radio island inside a condo we are standing next to. We experienced 90mileanhour winds. We are just about 13 miles at that point outside of the outer edge of the eye. It was a pretty frightening experience at points. The wind Strong Enough to whip up tornados. Yesterday 13 tornados touched down throughout the area. We were actually in Emerald Island yesterday in the afternoon where one of those tornados ripped through an rv park, damaging dozens if not 100 mobile homes there. A gentleman i spoke with rode out that tornado as he was trying to bunker down his place and leave in a bathroom with his wife. The tornado warnings have been lifted. Now its the flash floods that are a big concern. We already got about a foot of water here. We are expecting to get four more inches. That is enough to swallow cars on the road. That is why there is a curfew for much of coast in North Carolina. Emergency vehicles only are permitted right now on the roads. Police telling people to stay off. Tony. Jonathan, thank you very much. Dorian destroyed much of the northern bahamas and were hearing from two americans who were stranded there for days. Now they are back with their families who didnt hear from them for 48 hours. Ahead, how they survived the hurricane and helped others get out. Former u. N. Ambassador Samantha Power talks with us. Harrowing stories from people who made it out after Hurricane Dorian flat end parts of the bahamas. Two americans were stranded there losing contact with their husbands in the middle of the storm. Nikki battiste it in nassau, the bahamian capital. This sounds extremely scary. Reporter yes, it is, good morning. They tell us they were rescued and flown home to florida yesterday. When the hurricane hit, they were on the phone with their husbands back in the u. S. When their screens went black. For the next 48 hours their husbands feared the worst. We were terrified. They saw us being terrified and saw all connection with us completely go black. Reporter pam mobley and Joanne Coakley were facetiming with their husbands back home when Hurricane Dorian struck while they were on vacation. The walls were literally pulsing. The house was alive like this. It was just and we were underneath a table and then we were in a bathtub and then we were in a closet. We were absolutely terrified. Reporter the two best friends couldnt get if touch with their family for another 48 hours. And we knew they thought we were dead. That was probably the worst part for me. Reporter at home their husbands were glued to the television for 20 hours a day, desperately looking for answers. The last visualization we had was a house coming down on our wives. I mean, thats when panic mode was. Reporter meanwhile, joanne and pam, who is a physician, went out in the middle of the hurricane to help treat anyone who was injured. It was just a house, but and i have a home to go back to, but the people in green turtle, they dont and its going to be years before they are comfortable again. Reporter some residents entire families were rescued, like 1yearold rain and her mother. What kept me going was the child. That was it. I looked at her and i was like, nope, my baby is not going out like this. Reporter 58yearold isaiah had debrisfilled water up to his neck and held on to a piece of wood trying to survive. Very, very painful. Thankful to be alive to tell my story because i dont have many who are not alive to talk about it. Reporter pams husband told us this experience reminded him its not material things that naer and its time to focus on whats most important, family. Pam says she wants to come back here to the bahamas to help once she has regrouped. Thank you. We will hear a lot of those stories over the next weeks as people find each other and rebuild there. Ahead, first on cbs this morning, former u. N. Ambassador Samantha Power is in the toyota green room to talk about a new memoir about her life as a war reporter, diplomat, and human rights activist. Thats ahead here on cbs this morning. Reporter and human rights activist. Thats ahead on cbs this morning. Come try my really big chicken two patties for 4. 99, or three for 5. 99, or four for 6. 99. Try my really big chicken sandwich combos. Starting at 4. 99. Few people in history witness a war, bin a pulitze pu prize and work for the president of the united states. Former ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power served under president obama following him from the senate to the oval office. She shares her story in a memoir, the education of an idealist. Power writes about growing up as an irish immigrant in the u. S. , covering bosnia as a war reporter and campaigning for human rights. She joins us for her first tv ent interview about the book. You write that the sources of americas strength are diversity, individual rights, and leadership, but you see them as under threat. How . Well, we have a president who has walked away from our alliances, cozied up to regimes that dont respect human rights for reasons that make very little sense, and unfortunately attacked institutions at home and not taking pride in our adv. Its going to be hard to recover, but there is a hunger in the world and a need on the behalf of the American People to do so. Former Vice President joe biden is running to change course in america am you worked with him closely for years. He swore you if as u. N. Ambassador. Fair to say you endorse his presidency . I am not here to endorse. I spent the last few years working on a book where i tried to dig into what Public Service is really like and joe biden is certainly the embodied of Public Service, having dedicated his life to serving the American People. But i think right now we are so polarized that coming together over a story of one individual trying to go into Public Service and the bumps and bruises and the juggle as a mother and as somebody trying to promote human rights in an unfriendly world, thats that i tried to do rather than get into the thick of the political fray right now. I feel we need to come together and a story is sometimes a way do that. Before president Obama Took Office you were warning him about afghanistan. When you look at where we are right now with afghanistan and the impact that possible deal with the taliban could have with women, what is your concern there . All of us have to be concerned about what terrorist groups and radical extremists want to do with women, what the taliban did do to women. We have the track record of that. I think the challenge for the American People and the u. S. Government and our leadership in the world is we have been there for 18 years and our soldiers have served five, six tours in some cases and they have borne the brunt of this conflict, and we need to pursue a negotiated solution and try to use the leverage we have and the talibans desire for us not to be there to ensure some basic protections. We have also trained thousands of Afghan Security forces over the years, and the hope is that they will be able to hold their ground and taliban wont vrever to what they were doing. Are you concerned about the impact on afghan women . Absolutely. I am concerned about that and equally us being there is not defeating the taliban. We are at a stalemate. After 18 years, i think its time to bring our soldiers home. Some of the gut wrenching passages in the book are about your efforts to become a mom and the juggle of having demanding work an home life. Could you talk about what you learned and what you put on the page . 2001 of the themes of the one of the themes is lean on, how impossible it is to balance a fulltime National Security job, but also how hard it is for so many parents to balance the work they do and feel like they are doing enough for their kids or their partner, their spouse for that matter. So one of the scenes in the book is being on a call and my son trying to get my attention to give him the score of a baseball game, Washington Nationals game. And for every parent, you have that experience of trying to shoo your kid away. I happened to be on the phone with the secretarygeneral of the United Nations u. N. I have not had that experience. No, but in my case he storms off saying putin, putin, putin, putin. And is it going to be declan, declan, declan. You never forget that, do you . Indeed. To try to open it up and show women and men who are doing this juggle, none of us feel adequate in doing it, to show the vulnerability and to soldier on and try to be resilient. You write about struggles with fertility this the middle of this. I do. And i decided to include that because i remember sort of the moment i was working at the white house and i was keeping my little private journey and odyssey or my husband and mys journey very private and thinking you think you are alone, the only one going through this. I happened to mention it to some person, a woman colleague, and turns out she was going through the exact same thing. Then the more open i was about it, the more i realized there is a community of women who are going through this and we should just know that there is no stigma to it. Its just sometimes what you have to do in order to have the family that you seek. With all of your experience, i love at the end of the book you say if one lesson stands out above the others, it is that the people we love are the foundation for all else. And it sounds like when you talk about the accident your husband was in shortly after, all of this comes down to the por from your family . Absolutely. I went through a transition serving president obama and being in the cabinet of the president of the united states, january 20th turn in my badge, shoot out the door as President Trump otook over. I was very focused on our politics and everything that has happened, as i should be. But when your husband gets in an accident, it puts everything in perspective. And to get the balance right and try to emphasize your kids and your spouse and sort of sewing your own garden is its the foundation for having the right kind of politics. So at least you can publicize the book and back home. Balance will be restored. Thank you very much, we appreciate it. The education of an idealrist is on ale son tucson. A desperate anything to bring aid to the bahamas. Errol barnett traveled to freeport on a boat caring critically important supplies and filed this report a short time ago. Ago. A little cole ore saturday but well warm right back up to average for sunday and stay there foe the rest of the seven day forecast. Mav morning. Its time to bring you some of the stories that are the talk of the table this morning. This is where we each pick a story wed like to share with each other and all of you. Tony, start us off. At John Hopkins University they are intending to drop acid. They have a new research facility, 17 million, dedicated to the study of lsd, magic mushrooms and psychedelics and the potential medical benefits for anorexia, depression, addiction. We may smirk, but this is a return to the origins of lsd. Timothy leary, before he said drop in, drop out tune in, turn on, drop out. Im old enough to know this. He was a research psychologist. He was interested in these questions. And the drug was invented by a formceutical company. The cia studied it extensively in the 50s. They may be on to something. 17 million. All right. The story i am looking at, Congress Expanded a Program Last Year that would forgive federal Student Loan Debt for people in Public Service jobs. We are talking about nurses, teachers, firefighters, those in the military. A new report finds that 99 of the people who applied for this program were rejected in the first 12 months. So basically since 2007 you have had the forgiveness program. After ten years you can apply to have your loans forgiven. These Public Service jobs. They had a temporary program that they started last year, and this was supposed to help people with the relief. 700 million. But apparently only 27 million has been spent. 700 allocated for the program and only 1 of the people applying are you wiactually get the relief. So the u. S. Department of education has basically said a lot of this is a technicality. You have people that were supposed to apply for the first portion of this, get d th applyy expanded version. Technicality. Doesnt sound like a technicality. It makes it really difficult because you think, oh great, possibly relief. But no relief in sight. And a bunch of paperwork im sure you had to fill out to apply for the program. Glad my school loans are paid off. You talk about the divisions in our politics. I want to talk about the division in britain over brexit. Its dividing people and families, including the Prime Ministers family. Prime minister Boris Johnsons brother joe resigned as a member of his government yesterday and as a member of his parliament. I mean, sorry, yes, as a member of Parliament Said he had been torn between family loyalty and the national interests. Almost looks like a before and after picture there. That is Boris Johnsons younger brother. Mr. Johnsons brother, Prime Minister johnsons younger brother was torn between family loyalty and national interests. Mr. Johnsons resignation follows the removal of 21 mps from theed them out, his brother, who is more moderate, said thats enough. As you imagine, there is a lot of social Media Chatter about this. The excuse when you leave a job, people say you want to spend more time with your family . They say he wants to spend less time with thinks family. Boris johnsons sister and father also, ficks opposed to brexit in the past. Many of us are familiar with workplace cliches like pay your dues or wait your turn, but identical twin sisters Antoinette Clarke and tricia clarkestone found success in the corporate world playing by a new set of rules. The sisters share their tips of success in a new book. They reveal how anyone can shatter the status quo and become their best self. Tricia clarkestone, Antoinette Clarke, a two time emmy winner and senior Vice President of branded entertainment at cbs corporation. Good morning. This book is intended to help people become a boss lady . Yes. What is a boss lady . So, first we want to set the record straight. You dont have to be a ceo or an entrepreneur to achieve boss lady status. Anyone can do it. Its basically an essence. Its a mode of being. Its a vibe. We think a boss lady embodies the notion of having an equal llt of iq and eq. And its all about being a fearless optimist and dont ever count her out because she will achieve her goals. How do you get to being that person . A few things. I think we could go on and on, but essentially we think its having a level of confidence in yourself, compassion, and then also cool. Really leaning into your style and who and what you are. It sounds like you were lucky enough to have that with your grandmother, your mother as examples. What do you tell the people who dont have that type of inspiration or those women around them . You two can be a boss and own your destiny . A big thing is to really hshw that you can design your own level of success. On your own terms. And we thi rule. Its what you want it to be. And were prime examples of that. Tricia has had a separate path. I have had a separate path. We have both risen up in the ranks and found our own success in different ways, and its about surrounding yourself with the right people. We focus on deliberate cultivation of having the right people around you who raise you up. We say were each others gravity and elevation. And you dont have to have a twin to get that. It could be you and i, when we become friends. I like that. Exactly. But you also say all friend are not created equal . Yes. No. Thats the thing, too. And it may sound harsh but its not. We tend to fall into that place of passive accumulation. You know when you buy a blouse and you get extra buttons and then two weeks later you are like, wow, i have amassed a bowl of buttons. You have people in your life thats really not serving you. So you need to lean in and identify who and what you want around you. You wrote about using superpowers to get ahead. How did you tap into superpowers as 12yearolds selling guess sweatshirts . We were very crafty. I think it was our cool factor. We knew what we liked and we knew what was cool. Guess was big in the day. We are showing our age by saying that. Back in style now. I was going to say, still have the sweatshirt . No, it would be worth a lot of money right now. You were in middle school . We were in high school at the time. We found a shop that was selling them at discounted prices. We would save up our birthday and christmas money. We thought our girls at our private school would love it because we had dress down days. We bought 20 sweatshirts, went to school the next day. We rocked them. Everyone is like where did you get those . They are amazing. We are like we have one for you, one for you. We pulled them out of our backpack and tosold them. How is that a super power . We saw white space which is what you talk about in the book. What is white space . An opportunity. Its you looking at how you can solve a problem in a new way or create something new. How di notice you finish eac others sentences. We do that a lot. It sounds like you have been important for each other . I think us being twins have really shown us the power of connection and the need to also individuate. There has been a wow factor since we were little. When we went to school, we were no longer together. So they separated us in classes. We had to figure out you sound upset about that still. I am like, they separated us. She is giving him the side eye. We had to figure out how to create that wow factor. Love that book. Focus on yourself and dont forget about your crew. Exactly, double down on your crew. Thank you for being here. The book double down goes on sale tuesday. The last of a fleet of iconic passenger jets just flew into retirement.
