Kelya salazar wouldve turned 14 today, her family and friends gathered to celebrate her life. Reporter there were mariachis, and a pinata. But, there were also many tears. Kelya salazar was at the garlic festival with family members last sunday when gunshots rang out, she stayed behind to help a relative who used a cane. She was killed in the mass shooting. Her family says they were mourning her death but want to make sure to follow through with plans for her Birthday Party in san jose. It turned into a memorial for the young lady who was about to enter the school. Family members released butterflies in her memory. It is really hard. It is retraumatizing. Two others lost their lives, sixyearold Stephen Romero of san jose and 25yearold trevor early from upstate new york. The gilroy shooting not only left festival merchants dodging bullets but put them in limbo when they could not retreat their merchandise. However, it didnt stop many from making it to the fremont festival of the arts. The tiedye booth was less than 10 yards where the gunman opened fired in gilroy and the booth is still sitting there exactly at as it was, merchandise and all. But the merchant says it was important to make it to fremont so he made it work. Everything still to be here meant that we are okay, we are safe and strong. Vocal protesters gathered in front of a walmart demanding that megastore stop selling firearms and ammunition. This is where it starts. Unfortunately, our legislators are not taking the action that we want them to and this is our small way to play a part in making a difference. The company has tightened up its policies in recent years, it stopped selling Assault Rifles and recently raised the minimum age to buying a gun to 21. Theres renewed talk about action on gun laws. President trump says he will be making a statement on the subject tomorrow. A lot of things are in the works, a lot of good things. We have done much more than most administrations. And its not talked about very much, but we have actually done a lot. But, perhaps more has to be done. According to a recent poll, 94 of registered voters support requiring background checks for all gun buyers. The required checks at gun shows and private transactions is already passed in the house, but the most recent three shootings in gilroy, el paso, and dayton by men who did not have criminal backgrounds. Authorities say that but their guns legally through dealers. So, some lawmakers are talking about another proposal to bring back the assault weapons ban. I support the need for universal background checks and a renewal of the assault weapons bans. It is irresponsible that we dont take action. There was a ban in place from 1994 to 2004, but the law expired. It did prohibit the sale of many kinds of semiautomatic rifles, but it is not clear if the guns used in recent shootings would have been banned. That poll showed that 63 of s nationwide ban on the sale of assault weapons. That includes 87 of democrats, 63 of independents, and 39 of republicans.
