Frightening to say the least. I am still trying to care dertment is an earthquake mode, surveying the area for damage. And this house fire, just one of several that were reported in the minutes following the quake. Now the citys mayor is blaming broken gas mains. While there has been some damage like this, no reports of any major injuries. There is a road in ridgecrest left with a major crack, a 12 inch gap crossing highway 178. More reports of road damage in a community about 10 miles away. Now, at disneyland and several rides had to close because of the quake that park is more than 130 miles from ridgecrest but disney Officials Say it is routine. They shut down certain rights for inspection following an earthquake. Todays quake was largest with an epicenter in Southern California since 1999. The other the one in 99 was 7. 9. Todays quake was a testing by the new shake alert system. The system work and so there was an earthquake about 6. 2 producing energy and the warning came through. In los angeles there were there was a 48 second warning that the shaking was arriving. Kpix5 has learned the bay area version of shake alert will be ready by the end of the year. It will have value beyond just getting people to safety. We are not only having people do things but we are setting up all of these automated actions where the system can react automatically. Were fire doors can be opened automatically. Water valves can be shut to protect water supplies, trans can be slow down. We are working with bart. Some people in los angeles have complained they were not warned about todays quake on the shake alert system but a creator say that is because it wasnt Strong Enough in the l. A. Area to trigger the alert. We have someone live at the news desk, we have been monitoring the situation in the los angeles area, in kern county and city is like china lake, ridgecrest. But really what has been the lead story in los angeles. Let us check in with our sister station to see how they are handling it, reporter at caltech the scientist came running, leaving the Holiday Party trying to monitor and figure out what was what was going on. The earthquake only lasts about five to seven seconds, in l. A. Because we are such a distance away it may have felt longer than that and even longer if you happen to be in a higher level hour may be a high story building. But nonetheless it is certainly an earthquake that was felt today and will be continued to be felt for quite some time. That is where the local reporters and their at pasadena, probably at caltech getting the latest information from scientists about the duration of the quake, the depth, aftershocks, and there have been dozens and dozens and dozens. And this quake is different because there was affable actually a forequake there was a precursor it was 4. 7 that happened about 20 minutes before the big shake, and it was only about 5 of earthquakes and ever deliver that so they got one in los angeles. At the news desk i am ken bastida. You are looking at the chance of more significant aftershock. Scientists, whenever there is an earthquake of this size, they look over a lot of data from the quake and are calling what happened a robust sequence of aftershocks. They have come up with some numbers and you can take a look at the two things we look at. Aftershocks and foreshocks there is an 80 chance that the scientist say we could see an aftershock of a 5. 0 magnitude or higher. That would be a significant aftershock. Here is something interesting, because this number is typically around 5 . Is the earthquake that we had today a foreshock to an even larger one . Like what ken bastida was talking about. We had a 4. 7 and then a stronger one. Is the one that was stronger today is smaller than one to come over the next week . Usga says there is a 9 chance of that that we could see a 6. 4 magnitude or stronger shock over the next week. One should always be preparing for a big one. This does not make it less likely. There is about a one and 20 chance that this location will be having an even bigger earthquake within the next few days that we have not yet seen the biggest earthquake of the season for the sequence of. Upscale love numbers to pour over but the likelihood is high that we are going to see some significant aftershocks. The likelihood is low, but not zero, that an even bigger earthquake could happen over the next seven days. Of course everybody remembers the northridge quake back in 1994, that was 6. 7 in the San Fernando Valley and killed 60 people and damage was estimated between 13 and 50 billion. Thank you. Uthern california earthquake continues at 5 30. We will have a report from the epicenter and talk to a uc berkeley seismologist about the dangerous fault this quake was on and the similarities to bay area faults. They have deftly put out all the flames for the moment. Now you see the char on this side but is around the bend where the fires were that caused, the torch a couple of structures as well. Take a look at this video that we shot from earlier today, both san jose fire and cal fire showed up using helicopters, of course, to douse the flames did a pretty good job of it as you can see because the fire is out now. Again in the mop up phase but certainly a precarious situation because a hillside fire is very dangerous. The flames crawling up the hills very quickly. I spoke to a neighbor near the structures that burned who told me it was us and one shed that were damaged, although we do not have a lot of details on how much damage there were two each of those structures. The people live across highway 87 and watch the whole thing play out. Efforts i heard two booms about 15 minutes before i heard the helicopters. I heard big booms, like somebody had thrown out one of those big, loud firecracker things. Reporter fire trucks blocks highway 87 earlier this afternoon northbound. There were a couple of fires right next to the way there. Not sure if those are related to this one on two medications help. But once again, mopping up now and successfully putting out the fire appear. In san jose, i am simon perez. If you are driving along highway 87 posted this video on snapchat. On this day, 243 years ago our Founding Fathers pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to declare independence and defend our godgiven rights. Reporter now during his speech the president would pause occasionally for flyovers, time to flyovers from the blue angels and fighter jets. The tanks also have been a big draw for this packed crowd here on the National Mall. You know these tanks you rarely see them outside of battlefields or when they are on an army base so people really wanted to come by and see these tanks. That was a big problem for local dc lawmakers, they were afraid the tanks would be on the move destroying local streets where they were stationed right at the lincoln memorial.
