It is the cheers and applause piano riff today is a solemn day. For instance, trump sat down with french president , and man saying french accent here is the church, here is the steeple emmanuel macron. laughter trump told macron about the significance of the dday landing beaches. It is a very special place. It is an amazing place. And its somewhere, when you think of those places of great importance, this is certainly one of the top, in the eyes of some, its the its the top. Stephen as trump in terms no, its true, no its true in terms of the top places of amazing importance, its really amazing how top important it is. Some say and i would say, the top, when you think of places, and tops, and certainly one of the few beaches in france where people wear tops. laughter am i correct . Tell me if im correct. piano riff trump had more praise for his host country, and the palace they were meeting in. Id love you to maybe tell some of the folks in the media, just quick, like you did me, how it started with napoleon. Its a very interesting place that were in. And, as you know, france has many interesting places. Stephen as trump yes, not everyone knows that, jon. France has so many interesting places. Theres the hunchback church, theres old penis tower, thats famous, thth the naked ladies dance, the mines, the their famous toast museum, and of course the academy of tonguekiss. Trump explained how he met a new type of person on his trip who taught him things on his travels. They called them the guides. And they were guiding us. They were telling us what happened and when. laughter stephen yes, they call them the guides. I, too, have met the guides. And they led us to the bus, and said unto us, look to your right, for there is the arc de triomphe. And lo, they bequeathed us the boxed lunch. laughter trump was also asked about whether he would lead america to frances defense again. It is very sad but i would absolutely be right there. I would be right there. Stephen as trump absolutely. Id be right there. Especially especially now that those world war ii soldiers are so old and easy to fight. I mean, just bingitybangityboom, nighty night, grandpa, beach saved thats what the guide told me. laughter now, the president is of course facing his own battles back home. Yesterday, House Democratic leaders met in private to talk about the possibility of impeachment, and things got heated between speaker of the house nancy pelosi and house judiciary chairman and proud father of two wonderful chairs, jerry nadler. laughter congressman nadler wants to launch an impeachment inquiry against trump, but pelosi turned him down, responding, i dont want to see him impeached, i want to see him in prison. cheers and applause piano riff okay, but why do we have to choose . laughter and democrats arent trumps only problem. Last week, trump threatened that if mexico did not stop Central American migrants from crossing into the united states, he would put a 5 tariff on everything we import from them, starting this coming monday. Everyone is going to feel these tariffs. Our top four agricultural imports from mexico are beer, avocados, tomatoes, and tequila. Trump is putting a tariff on summer laughter so, heres the thing, if you like avocados, i suggestno thenl of them this weekend because theyre going to go bad. laughter theyre not ripe theyre hard, theyre hard, theyre hard, theyre mush. Theyre gone. This is such a bad idea that even Congressional Republicans are flirting with rebellion. Oooh, oh, oh really . Flirting . Flirting flirting with rebellion. That could lead to a dalliance with integrity, maybe making eyes at governance, and then at the christmas party, a drunken hookup with defending the constitution. cheers and applause they are 100 . Caucus met with white house officials to learn what trumps plan with mexico was. And, howd that go . One republican aide after this meeting was over with, they described this as a clusterf. Its cluster bleep . cheers and applause why do you have to . Why the potty mouth . Now, there have been rumors that republicans are so upset about these tariffs that they might do anything. Those rumors were shoved into a shallow grave by Senate Majority leader and man who just read an article about his bodys hidden Pleasure Centers laughter mitch mcconnell. Mcconnell said, most of us hope that this mexican delegation thats come up here and discussed the challenges at the border, and what the mexicans might be able to do to help us more than they have, will be fruitful, and that these tariffs will not kick in. Yes, hes hoping that theyll get trump to not put the tariffs on. In other words, mcconnell wants the mexicans to do the jobs american politicians wont do. And the mexicans heres the deal, the mexicans, they went to the white house, right . They went to the white house and no. Back in europe, meanwhile, trump took time out of his day of solemn remembrance to fire back at his congressional critics. Jon mindy kaling is here. Stephen so funny. A lovely person to boot and shes got the new movie late night. Jon oh, yeah, yes indeed. Stephen about a late night talk show. We might have something to talk about. Jon thats right, she can give some insight. Stephen we might be able to relate. Jon yeah, relate. Stephen well, folks, as we were saying before, today is the 75th anniversary of dday, and i was looking at all the footage over in normandy. I went over there a few years ago, because my mothers brother, my uncle Andrew Edward tuck was a lieutenant in world war ii and he was in the 101st airborne and dropped in eight hours before dday to cut communications lines. And, he fought there, he fought in market garden, he fought in bastogne. He went all the way to the eagles nest, and did not survive the war, sadly. But we have all of his letters that he sent back, to his mom and his dad and sisters, my mom being one of them. And i thought i would like to read you one of his letters right now, in commemoration of all the people who sacrificed in world war ii that we might be free. And this is the last letter he sent before dday. There are a lot more letters from the rest of the war, but this is the last letter before dday. He was stationed in england, getting ready to go. They didnt know where, they didnt even know when, and this is from may 10, 1944. Mom dearest, do you want to go on a dream with me . I am tugging myself back to reality. Its quite a job. A little jingle keeps running through my head. Here i am on a hillside, master of all i view, that is, master to toy with each beauty in my mind. Each green hill bows gracefully into a valley. Each valley smiles back up to me, its face wrinkled with roads, gardens and clustered houses. A portrait of an old man, this, with a smoke of a village curling lazily over him. Exciting for the fishermen, not so great for the person who misplaced a Million Dollars of cocaine. Honey . Have you seen my big black sack . Meanwhile, this week, after a Water Treatment messup, the tap water in cole grove, ohio turned bright pink. Stephen thats kinda the whole point, mr. Rule. The hindenburg was an amazing idea the idea was dope. The marketing was dope. Its just, the fire and the screaming and not dope. Jon yeah. Her new film is late night. So you went to our parents Parent Company in order to make this interview . Yep. And you have no experience in comedy . No, no, im obsessed with comedy. No, ive seen every episode of the show, ive read every book written about it. I do a little standup. Where . If you have a problem, ask the chemist, shell always have the solution. I scanned the audience, and i was, like, this is a bunch of smoke shows. Stephen yeah. Nice to see you again. I am so happy to be here. Stephen i have been lucky enough to see a fair amount of you recently, because i interviewed the montclair Film Festival for late night, when you showed it there. Thank you so much for being there. I went to your home for a short time. Stephen yeah, i got you drunk. Yes. Stephen briefly. Afternoon day drinking with mindy kaling. It was great. Stephen now, you went to dartmouth and you have a fancy playwriting degree, right . Yes. Stephen is the degree in play writing . Yes. applause thank you. Im educated. Im educated. Im not just beautiful. Yes, i went to college. Stephen fancy play writing degree. Were you always writing, even as a child . Always, yeah. Stephen and did you write comedy as a child . Well, my mom was a doctor, and i was a real latchkey kid. We werent allowed to have any babysitters or anything because they were too suspicious of american people, and so i would go to my moms office and she was an ob gyn, so there was one office where she would talk to patients, one where she would do exams, and one where she would draw blood, the phlebotomy office. So after school, i would just go to the phlebotomy office. And, if they had to draw blood, they would ask the patient, like, are you cool with a six yearold being there, shes the doctors daughter . And for the most part, they said yes, and if not, i would stand in the hallway. All this to say that there was a typewriter in there and what i would do until my mom finished work, was she was like, you can read or you can write, thats it. So, i would sit with the typewriter this is making me sound really old i would sit with the typewriter, and i would just, like, write little plays. Stephen and be adorable doing it, because this is oh, no. Stephen this is the look back then. No, its horrible stephen its fantastic those glasses are coming back. Those are hip glasses. Stephen they are hip glasses. I just want to bite those cheeks. Oh. Stephen how old are you here . I think im five there. Stephen now, you have a daughter now . Yes, my daughters one and a half. Stephen do you see a resemblance, do you guys look alike . I think she does unfortunately look a lot like that. Stephen that is absolutely beautiful. Do you remember, how old were you, and do you remember the first joke you ever wrote . Well, when i was around six or seven, and, again, i was working i would be after school, i would write these little oneact plays, like one page plays. And between my moms patients, i would run over to her office and be, like, read this. And she is, you know, she was always very, very hard on things, that make her laugh. She would not laugh if she didnt think it was funny, even to a six or sevenyearold. So i wrote a play about a Haunted House where a mummy, a witch and a dracula a vampire lived and lived together in a Haunted House, and the witch thought that the house was kind of run down. And she said to the mummy and the dracula, how much are we paying in mortgage on this Haunted House . Because i had just learned about mortgages from my dad. Stephen sure. And so, i showed it to my mom and she didnt laugh out loud because literally, who could laugh out loud at that stupid play, but she smiled and she was like, i like this. So that was the first joke i can remember writing. Stephen were they okay with you becoming a writer . Yeah, they loved it. But they were they loved it because they loved growing up we listened to like, nichols and may on long car rides. Later, i watched seinfeld, and they loved comedy, even though i dont have anyone in the business on either side of my family. But they loved it and they just wanted me to be extremely successful, so they could brag to people, so theres still a lot of pressure. Stephen when did that come around, when did they start bragging . I remember when i slapped Steve Carrell on the second episode of the Office Laughter they were, like, that was cool. Stephen it is cool. Youre slapping really funny people. laughter stephen well, you got the new film late night where you play a young writer, its her first comedy writing job. Whats your characters name again . Molly patel. Stephen molly patel. And Emma Thompson is your co star. We just had her on recently just last night to talk about it. When was your first memory of meeting her . Was it did you ever see her when you were younger like on stage or in films . Yeah, when i was 11, my mom dragged me to see much ado about nothing, the movie. And, i was so mad about it because i didnt know anything about shakespeare and it sounded really boring to me. Stephen its much ado about nothing. Why would you want to see something about nothing . Yes. So i went to go see it with her, and it is so funny and so well made, and her performance is fantastic, and shes so beautiful that i just became really obsessed with her. Int, aed my demaed thawe thxt weekend. And e just bn tracg her career since then. Stephen so what was it like to work with her then . To, like, write something for her and to work with her . Was that nervewracking or just sort of joyful . It was nerve racking, but the thing with emma is that she is i dont know, youve met her she just plows through any nervousness and she just wants everyone to be really comfortable. She does this thing that i really love. When you work with young actresses that are new in the business, a lot of times they dont want to really say what they really feel about things because they dont want to offend anyone. Because theyre just the marriott hotel. Stephen sorry. laughter hey, hey, hold on stephen hold on, my watch got a phone call, and i tried to put my hand over it because i forgot to put it to sleep, and it was a call from marriott hotel. Your awards program from marriott interrupted my touching story about Emma Thompson. laughter applause wait a second hold on a second i have so many you are rich why do you need an awards program . Stephen i dont i this is how you get rich. You go for the rewards. Exactly. I also steal rolls from au bon pain. I dont even i dont even know. I have so many more questions about your financial situation. laughter i dont use an awards program stephen heres the thing no, no, heres the thing, he has the number one show on tv, and hes, like, oh, got to make sure that if i travel, that me and my wife and my three children are being hosted in an economical way laughter you get put up everywhere stephen sure, sure, but we can upgrade. laughter i dont even know. Yeah, im in a movie with Emma Thompson, like, who cares. Whatever. laughter stephen i put my hand over it, thinking, i know that if you put your hand over it, it tells it to go away because i forgot to put it on sleep before the show. Oh, really subtle really subtle. Stephen i tried i was trying i was trying can we play that back . Play back the moment when i was trying to do that . Im so sorry, please accept my apology. Its fine. Stephen i was trying to do this so it would stop and i thought, damn, did i just answer the phone on my wrist . And i thought, well, well know in a moment if they start talking. So the show in the movie is called late night and its about a late night show, and you actually went and spoke to some of my late night writers to get a sense of what it was like to write for a late night show. Yes. Stephen did they have nice things to say . laughter they loved you. Stephen oh, thats nice. I like them now. They loved you and i actually talked to a lot of the female writers on your staff. Stephen sure, yeah. And it was great to research that because all my experience in is the scripted halfhour world. So it was really nice. Stephen did you ever want to work in late night anyway . Its really hard. Stephen yeah, because you have to do a lot of it. You have to turn your phone off before the show starts. laughter its like a list of things cheers and applause stephen youre feeling really good right now, arent you . Im sorry ill move on from it no, its so amazing what you do. I did so Much Research and i watched so much old i watched dick cavett and Johnny Carson and its amazing, it actually made me have a newfound respect for you. Stephen oh, thanks very much. Thank you. No, honestly because i mean, its so hard. You hear in tv about trying to hit all four quadrants of people, and what i really respect about you on the show is you really are so authentic. Like, what youre saying in your monologue is really how you feel. Stephen pretty much, yeah. cheers and applause thank you, thats so nice of you to say. Yeah. Stephen now the character, molly, now, she is the only female writer in this room, in the late night room, and shes a diversity hire. Youve talked about that in your experience at the office. Is she based upon your experience at the office . You know, im always so careful about this, because if you watch the movie theyre very unwelcoming to my character, but at the office, those guys were welcoming, but i was the only woman, and i was the only minority on the staff when i started there, and it was terrifying. Stephen well, it was really funny. Thank you. Stephen it was nerve wracking for me to watch. Really . Stephen yeah, because i thought maybe you were going to some of my own mannerisms would show up in one of the characters or Something Like that, because weve known each other for a little while. Yes. Stephen was there anything that surprised you about how we put these shows together . Well, one thing that i didnt talk about i mean, i did so Much Research was how obsessed everyone is with lunch. Thats, like, a big part of comedy writing culture. Stephen big part of the day, yeah. Food culture in general. Basically you start off with a whole bunch of cereal, right . Yes, on the first day. And when youre locked in a room with other people the whole day, you just look forward to lunch so much. I ended up not putting it in the movie because its pretty boring, but in my writers room, were obsessed with lunch. Stephen like, on the Mindy Project . On the Mindy Project. And i have two new shows right now. No big deal. Stephen okay. No big deal. cheers and applause no, its true. It doesnt matter. Stephen it is a big deal. On the shows, were always talking about lunch. We actually have this wheel that we spin stephen a wheel of lunch . A wheel of lunch. Stephen did they send that . They sent me this, is that what this wheel of lunch is . Yeah, this is the wheel of lunch. And instead of confronting her, scoops his old best friend and takes this trip that was intended for a honeymoon to figure out what to do. Stephen where do you go . We go to thailand. And the whole thing was based on a trip i took with my actual friend dan, where we went to all these incredible exotic locations and met all these fantastic characters. And just, while it was happening, it was so cinematic and beautiful, and such a fun experience, i thought, theres a movie in here. So i spent the next several years writing it, and then i gathered a bunch of awesome people together to make it. Stephen Mccauley Culkin is in your film. Is he an old friend of yours . Yeah, we got to make a movie together in the early 2000s called party monster. Which was a true story about new york night life. Oh, somebody saw it . laughter stephen almost somebody saw it. Like, you know what i mean . It was like we both were kids who worked and earned a living and that like, real happy that that kid worked so hard, so that you can take it a little bit easier now.
