Reporter the mayor insists raising the alarm was appropriate. I felt like it was my duty to share the information i had. Reporter former federal Prosecutor Says she may have crossed a line. Federal agents are going to stop talking to local police agencies. The reason the communication is so vital is for safety, the safety of everybody. I was sharing information in a way that was legal. It was not obstructing justice. And it was an opportunity to ensure people are aware of their rights. Critics of sanctuary cities believe the mayors warning was irresponsible. Virtually everyone likely to be caught up in one of these Enforcement Actions is someone who we call a criminal alien. Thats someone who is typically committed some other crime. Yeah, they were at risk of losing their protected status under daca, but now the Supreme Court has rejected the trump administrations request to fast track an appeal. Also tonight, President Trump blasted a former Deputy Sheriff over his failure to confront the Florida High School shooter. Heres what he says he would have done. I really believe i would run in there even if i didnt have a weapon. And i think most of the people of this room would have done that too. Well tonight that officer is fighting back. In a statement his Attorney Says the first call that sheriff Scot Peterson received was of fire crackers and not gunfire. When he actually heard shots, he believed they were coming from outside the school. So consistent with his training, peterson took up a tactical position between two buildings. Kpix 5 Andrea Nakano breaks it all down for us. Reporter california has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation, but now state lawmakers are introducing ten new bills. I think we are looking to them for inspiration. We believe that their call to action should be a call to action in washington, but also in every single state capital. A democrat who represents San Francisco is one of several lawmakers introducing a new gun control bill. These new bills range from expanding the definition of an Assault Rifle to expanding the gun violence restraining order to not limit it to just family members, but adding Mental Health workers, employers, co workers, and school staff to that list. What this idea is to expand the kinds of individuals that could go into court and ask a judge for that restraining order. Reporter gun advocates are frustrated with potentially another law that could take away their rights. I thought the bill was suppose to pass the problem. Ultimately one has to ask that question, how much is too much . Reporter craig deluse feels lawmakers are unfairly targeting the second amendment, and this weapon in particular, the ar15 used to gun down students and teachers at Marjory Stoneman douglas high school. Our California Legislature is trying to basically take advantage of tragedies in order to do something that it is they always wanted to do. And that is they just want to ban guns. Reporter kpix 5 security analyst jeff hart believes the country would be taking a step in the safer direction if ar 15s were banned. I think if you took a poll of the majority of Law Enforcement officials out there, they would welcome banning Assault Rifles for the general public. Those weapons were made for military applications in Law Enforcement only. And they are designed for one person and that is for killing people. Reporter while california may be taking the lead anymore posing stricter gun laws, harp says it needs to start at the top. California can pass all the laws they want, but if somebody puts one in the car and drives across the border, what prevents them from bringing it to the state . The man was electrocuted while trimming trees in the backyard of the home on page mill road in san jose this afternoon. Kpix 5s len ramirez explains what happened. Reporter several homes were left without power for several hours following the accident that left a landscape worker dead from electrocution. Friends and coworkers were horrified at the scene. The mans lifeless body still roped into the tree he was trimming around some high powered lines. His chain saw dangling below him. He may have cut the branch. When it fell, it came in contact with the power lines and knocked it free. Either it contacted him or contacted the piece of equipment. The wood is wet, so thats going to have an affect also. Reporter pg e cut power to the neighborhood to allow the Fire Department to safely bring the body down, but even with a large ladder truck, fire crews still had trouble because the accident scene is about 20 feet up the tree and behind a row of twostory homes, which left the mans body visible for hours. Neighbors say the house was recently put up for sale. And yesterday him and a couple other workers were working on the house because its going to be sold, and he was here yesterday. Super sad. The fires killed 25 people and destroyed more than 5,000 structures in october last year. Yeah, it shows spectators reaching out, touching the Marine Mammal. Kpix 5 emily turner reports, the question tonight is did they break the law . The video is stunning, taken over the weekend by a charter out of fort bragg. But for Marine Mammal advocates like steve jones, he says it is appalling. Not so fast. Thats because it might be illegal. The protection act requires you to be 300 feet from whales and this video taken by anchor charter boats of fort bragg, obviously they show the boat inside that space. And not only that, but goes on to show tourists petting the gray whale. You had to put this a lot because they ought to know better in some of the fines from the npa, could be loss of vessel after 28,000 for the vessel. Reporter the owner says he is within the law because the whale came to him. As for the tourist, maximum punishment could be a 10,000 fine and up to a year in jail. But Law Enforcement arm of the National Atmospheric Administration Says they are aware of the situation, but cant comment further other than to say this is a prime example of whatnot to do when you see a whale. It sends a bad message. And it also, you know, we dont want to domesticate our wild animals, critically large whales. We would like them to be wary of us. Thats only going to happen if we keep our distance from them. We tried to maneuver away from the whale. It was down near the propellers, you know, down the side. And that is not something you can do. But they go on to state that it doesnt say anywhere youre allowed to pet a whale, so noah said thats correct. He doesnt exly are sitly say no doesnt say do not pet the whales. But the question is does petting the whale change what they would naturally be doing or potentially domesticate it. In marin county, emily turner, kpix 5. We have one to two fires a day and when you respond together and you put your lives on the line, you do have to surround yourself with experts. And for us the expert in gas and electric is pg e. We run about 2,500 2,800 fire calls a year and on almost every one of those calls pg e is responding to that call as well. And so when we show up to a fire and pg e shows up with us it makes a tremendous team during a moment of crisis. I rely on them, the firefighters in this department rely on them, and so we have to practice safety everyday. Utilizing pg es talent and expertise in that area trains our firefighters on the gas or electric aspect of a fire and when we have an emergency situation we are going to be much more skilled and prepared to mitigate that emergency for all concerned.
