We begin this morning with the continuing questions about the response to the Florida School shooting and the ongoing debate over gun safety. There are reports this morning that at least three Broward County sheriffs deputies waited outside marjory Stoneman Douglas high school, while a gunman killed 17 people inside. That includes a School Resource officer who resigned on thursday. Last weeks shooting prompted calls at the state and National Level for changes to gun laws and security measures at schools. Omar via franca is outside the school. Good morning. Reporter good morning, governor rick scott says he wants to make it virtually impossible for anyone with a health issue to use a gun. Cbs confirmed a woman close to the shooter called the fbi january 25th and warned them she was concerned that nicolas cruz would quote get into the school and just shoot the place up. Id rather have somebody that loves their students and wants to protect their students than somebody standing outside that doesnt know anybody and doesnt know the students and frankly for whatever reason decided not to ogo in, even though he heard lots of shots being fired. At cpac on friday, President Trump once again called for arming gun adept teachers to keep students safe. Mr. Trump said he would rather see educators with concealed permits than armed officers Deputy Petersen who had a chance to stop nicolas cruz and did not. The teacher would have shot the hell out of him before it happened. That was not rick scotts action plan on friday. We have Law Enforcement in every school. Were going to look at the size of campuses, at least one per every thousand students. Law enforcement keeping them safe. Let teachers focus on teachers. Governor scott ro posed a violent restraining order, to having a gun the evidence of a threat in presented in court. Kicked out of school, no ento students as a danger to shoot people and was reported to the fbi last monment ths as a poss school shooter. Yet, he was never put on the list to never buy a gun and his guns were never removed from him. Cbs was concerned a woman called the tip line concerned nicolas cruz would shoot the place up. She said he had a diminished mental capacity and gave a stark warning. You know, its just so much. I know hes hes going to explode. It was very somber. Some people are emotional. Reporter marjory Stoneman Douglas social study teacher greg pittman was one of the Staff Members who returned to the school. He says he is a gun owner but guns if classrooms are a bad idea. What if a student overpowers me and takes the guns, on top of that i want to be a teacher. I do not want to be police. I do not want to be s. W. A. T. I do not want to be the army. That doesnt mean shes concerned about returning to campus. I want to return to a safe place a safe country for all of our children and their children and their children. In response, some nra supporters are promising to boycott any company that does cut ties with the organization, a former Senior Adviser to President Trumps Election Campaign pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy and making false statements the plea entered by rick gates on friday says he will fully cooperate with special counsel muellers investigation. Gates is now the fifth person to enter a guilty plea as a part of muellers probe. Paula reed is at the white house with more. Good morning. Reporter good morning the gates plea caps off what has been a busy week for the office. Gates is likely to be a valuable witness for them. As he had access to the highest levels of the Trump Campaign and could provide valuable evidence against his former business associate and Campaign ChairmanPaul Manaforts. Why are you pleading guilty . Reporter at the federal courthouse nid friday, rick gates became the fifth person to plead guilty in the Robert Mueller investigation. Gates admitted to charges of conspireing against the u. S. And lying to federal authorities in a recent interview with investigators. In october, mueller charged gates and former Trump Campaign chairman Paul Manafort with 12 counts related to their lobbying efforts on behalf of foreign government. On thursday a federal grand jury emerged and returned an additional 32count indictment against manafort and gates for tax evasion and bank fraud. Before he agreed to cooperate, he was facing decades behind bars. Under the terms of his plea agreement, he now faces between 57 an 71 months in prison. That could be shortened based on his cooperation. Paul manafort has done an amazing job. Reporter the white house has so far tried to distance the president from his former Campaign Chairman and his business associate, saying back in october the charges against manafrt and gates had nothing to do with the president or his campaign. Again, there are no activities or official capacity, which the Trump Campaign was engaged in, in any of these activities. Most of them took place well before the campaign ever even existed. Will you testify against manafort . Reporter but gates is now the third trump associate known to be working with muellers investigation and his plea deal will put the spotlight on manafort, who has given no categories he intends to cooperate. Man a for the released a statement friday reiterating his innocence and saying gates decision does not alter his commitment to defend himself against quote untrue piled up charges. If manafort decided to cooperate, he could provide special counsel with evidence about that trump tower meeting with the russians he attended and also why the Trump Campaign pushed to make the Republican Party platform more friendly to russia. So far no categories he wants to play ball. He is expected to go to trial in fall. Paula reid, thank you. President trump is leaving it up to chief of staff john kelly to decide whether or not mr. Trumps soninlaw, jared kushner, will get a final security clearance the Washington Post reports the Justice Department alerted the white house two weeks ago in ongoing issues in his security investigation. He only has an intimclearance. That still gives him access to top secret and sensitive information. As president , mr. Trump can give his soninlaw a high level security clearance if the Background Investigation goes on. For more on the developments in washington him we turn to anna palmer, coauthor of politicos playbook newsletter, which i read every morning, anna, good morning. Lets talk about this late ev turn in the events. How much pressure is now on Paul Manafort given the breath of these indictments . I think what you saw this week was really the escalation on Paul Manafort, mueller is getting closer every week. The pieces are falling into place. 60 million scheme that theyre accusing him of, this is one of his closest advisers, who is now pleading guilty. The pressure is definitely ramping up. So what exactly do you think gates gets, plea gets mueller, where does that mountain him now beyond manaformanafort . One of the special probes has been how secret. They have been clamped down on information. We have been surprised several times, where this is going. Who is pleading guilty, when theyre pleading guilty. This also gives him a step to President Trump. This was somebody Deputy Campaign chairman of the Trump Campaign, clearly in the know at the highest levels of what was happening. Do they have a sense how concerned the white house is about this . I think they have continued to say, we are not a part of this. As you can tell, this is happening before this presidency started. But you have to look at where this is going and its clearly coming closer and closer towards the white house. Towards potentially jared kushner. A lot of people that have been questioned are still working in this white house. Lets talk about the issue of the School Shooting in florida and the repercussions from that. President trump has in what the white house is calling a listening phase on developing gun safety measures, is there a real potential here for meaningful legislation on the issue . I think im a real pessimist on this. I have been covering the gun lobby and gun reform lobby for over ten years. It is very difficult to spread the need. There is certainly on smaller issues, maybe bank bump store, closing Mental Health issues. You can see something happen. This concept of what the president has been pushing on guns for teachers is a nonsort of for all democrats and a lot of republicans. This president clearly thinks his base is in one issue on the gun issue. In florida, we see a republican governor who is actually maybe opened to some reforms. Does that give you any inkling the dynamic may be changing for 2018 . I think that will be the real big tell here. They say they spend a lot of money. Thats why they control it. The nra spends a lot of money. I think they win elections. They turn out this base. Few see the gun control lobby able split some of these seats and make this an issue. All of a sudden tear power crumbles. Is there any indication from the reaction of students from florida leading these marches is in anyway shifting this debate significantly . I think its compelling and clearly something that keeps it in mind. One of the biggest issues has been unfortunately a series of these Mass Shootings at school. It peaks the news, us recovering it him congress is talking about it. But then nothing happens. We see that time after time. There is another looming issue that needs to be dealt with. That is the fate of the dreamers and daca. From the perspective of the hill, is there anything that will be done in terms of a legislative solution here in. I think right now the month to watch is the end of march. It is going to be the next time the government has a funding fight. Thats really where you can see the power of the purse come into play. Unfortunately the dynamic versus not shifted. The how are they going to deal with the border wall, these young immigrants, have not been involved. Thank you very much. Tomorrow morning on face the nation here on cbs, gun violence will be among the topics discussed when market brennan makes her new day moderator. The white house was put on lockdown following an attempted secret security breach. They say a woman intentionally crashed her vehicle into the security barrier of the Old Executive Office building. Good morning the secret service says it has had previous encounters with this woman at the white house involving several arrests. As athletes, they have been on opposing teams fighting it out at the Winter Olympics. Well hear their remarkable story ahead. Something that surfaced in the archives of the American College may provide a rare link to our nations earliest days. Well be right back, this is cbs this morning saturday. May provide a rare link to our nation he once said that one of his big regrets, if he had to talk about regrets in life is that he crossed the line into politics. He was so reveered on both side of the aisle, why do you think he regretted that . He looked back at his Close Association with ripped nixon, which i think was more personal than political. I think later he looked back and saw how those lines can become blurred and people can easily confuse a partisan political agenda for that, that tran skrendz all of that. So Billy Grahams primary goal was to reach people, all people, of gods love and the day of judgment to all people and the freedom of forgiveness through the cross. So he i think more than made up for whatever errors he might have made in his past. Christs message is, love thy neighbor, dont judge, dont be prideful. When you listen to political talk today, whether by officials or online that does not exist. Does that argue for a framelike figure to jump into politics to lift it up or to stay way away because none of christs message can be found in it. We need people in politics who of course have consciences guided by morality and by the spirit of god. But i think we also need people standing outside of politics, speaking a word of grace and redemption and of coming judgment. And i think thats what graham was able to do. He was able to say what we all know, were sinners. We know it doesnt matter how much we say everything is relative and not fine. We know thats not true in our own hearts. At the same time he loved people. Billy graham was never angry. He was never resentful or warring against the culture and the world around him. I am extremely proud of jackie, gaby and stephanie. We worked with pg e to save energy because we wanted to help the school. They would put these signs on the door to let the teacher know you didnt cut off the light. The teachers, they would call us the energy patrol. So they would be like, here they come, turn off your lights those three young ladies were teaching the whole school about energy efficiency. We actually saved 50,000. And thats just one school, two semesters, three girls. Together, were building a better california. Welcome back to cbs this morning saturday. Still to come this morning, the cause of many cancers may be a mystery but some may be directed to a single virus. Well look at how prevalent it is and weather warnings are being heeded. Talk about traveling far for a good cup of coffee, wed meet a man who traveled thousands of miles to his homeland where the First Successful cup may have been brewed and it was full of a few more than jolts. From citrus fraughts to sweet corn, usually a frozen crop spells disaster. But the opposite is true for one harvest where freezing cold temperatures are the secret ingredient. Thats ahead. But we begin this half hour with the california couple dharjed with torturing, shackling, and torturing their children. Three new accounts of child abuse were add and luis turpin has been charged with felony assault. They plead not guilty and remain behind bars on 12 million bail. Mireya villarreal has the latest. This is a vivid reminder that the house of horror case is far from over. A trial could be months down the road, but for their 13 children, the heal progress says has just again. Corona mayor Karen Spiegel has kept an eye on the seven adult siblings. These are adults chronologically, but theyre children, you know, in every other fashion because theyre so stunted both physically and emotionally. Reporter the 13 children were imprisoned and shacked by their parents. Now they understand they have a voice and rights. Treatment has been mixed with new experiences like watching harry potter movies and playing music. So music was something they embraced, and so when music was played for them at the hospital and it was out in the community, fender guitar stepped up and got each one of them a guitar. All 13 have their own guitar. Jack represents the older siblings. They smaller daily life decisions are making big changes in their world. Deciding what theyre going to read, deciding what theyre going to wear, picking their own meal in the day. That was their big deal. They love lentil soup. New things like that are really good. The seven older kids live in a customized area of a local hospital where they can go outside and exercise but the younger simmings are in foster care. They have not been reunited but communicate using skype. Talking about their parents is intentionally limited. They do know their parents are in custody. We really havent talked a great deal about that or even whether they have a role in that going forward. Its just not something they wanted to talk about. But what they do talk about are some of lifes simple pleasures. They want to go to the beach. They want to go to the mountains. They want to do all those things that most people their age do and have done. Reporter for cbs this morning saturday, mireya villarreal, riverside, california. So much psychological damage to undo here. And our hearts go out to those kids as they try and put their lives back together. Sure do. Still ahead this morning, a surprise discovery at an merge college is providing a hairraising link. Theres a tease in there, to the nations earliest days. But first heres a look at the weather for your weekend. Its one form of cancer for which the cause is known, and prevention is possible. Up next on our morning rounds medical new, dr. According to the sterns for Disease Control, 31,000 men and women die every year to cancer attributed to hvp. Were joined by s medical correspondent dr. Jon lapook who took a look at hvp and how it can be avoided. Good morning, jon. Good morning. For one man in particular, getting the word out has become a personal crusade. Michael becker has spent a lifetime in the business of diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Thats why a glance in the mirror two years ago frightened him. I saw this huge lump on the right side of my neck. Youre somebody who has worked with cancer and now youre feeling this large lump. And so i think its cancer. Reporter it was advanced throat cancer from human pap low miss virus or hpv. Theres no Screening Test for cancer of the throat. A recent study found about 7 million adult males have high risk strains of hpv. There is a vaccine to prevent hpv usually given at age 11 or 12, yet only 43 of teens complete the recommended doses. When you see how low the uptake is, whats your reaction . Anger. Anger. We have a moral obligation to wipe hpv off the face of the planet. Reporter becker has detailed his experience in a blog and a memoir. His wife laurie. Ive about had different people reach out to me saying, you know, i was on the fence about my son and then after looking into it, theyre like, you know, thank you. Reporter last year becker was in an imuno Therapy National institution at health but it failed. Hes finished up a chemotherapy cycle. His ninth and final visit is next week. Tumors have shrunk but may be showing signs to this treatment. I know my condition could have been avoided. Jon, you talk about the vaccination in the piece and obviously theres room for improvement here when youve only got 43 of teens complete the vaccination. What kind of outreach is being done . Is it enough . Theres not enough but theres a lot of it. The cdc has an outreach and the American Pediatrics Association has a huge one. Theyre targeting the pediatricians. You have to make it routine, educate the parents and specifically address the questions they have. One of the Big Questions they point out is a lot of parents come in and say my kids 11 or 12. Why are you giving it at such a young age. Theyre not jsexually attractiv. Thats true. It works better when they get it earlier. You want to get them before theyre sexually active. Theres the doctor aspect of this but when you look at the numbers, this seems to be a bigger part of the Public Health conversation. It really does, alex. The numbers are kind of amazing. 14 million new infections a year. Now before people panic, 90 of those go away on their own, but the 10 can be persistent, and if theres a certain strain, then potentially that could be the kind that causes cancer. Now, theres some research that definitely has to be done. For one thing, there are studies going on. I spoke to Andrew Giuliani whos doing some of the work on this, you have to prove and these studies are going on, that giving the vaccine that protects against certain strains that causes head and neck cancer prevents it. It makes sense. I have to prove that. The other thing is they need a diagnostic test. You know, we talk about the pap smear for women. You need something that can pick this up early because earlier diagnosis, earlier treatment, better results. All right. Dr. Jon lapook. Thanks for coming in, jon. Great to be here. In 1996, the same year as the mass shooting in dunblane in gunman in australia killed 35 people and led the country to take sweeping gun changes. In germany, also. Gun violence did not disappear but deadly Mass Shootings are very rare. Alex . Roxanna, thank you. And that couldnt be truer for a college in upstate new york. Late last year, researchers at Union College discovered what they believe is a lock of George Washingtons hair. It was tucked into a 225yearold almanac inside an envelope labeled washingtons hair. I think the first thought is, oh, omg, i cant believe this is washingtons hair. We have washingtons hair. And i think there was a thought of how do we know for sure . We need to do more research. We cant say for sure. Reporter with the hair over 200 years old, experts say dna testing is likely to be inc inconclusively. The historical evidence leads scholars to believe the hair is indeed from the First American president. The almanac belonged to the son of general Phillip Skylar who served under George Washington in the revolutionary war and later cofounded Union College. It wasnt unusual in those days for people to give locks of hair to their colleagues, to their close friends. A lock of hair was a way to remember people. Reporter this historic hair tucked away for centuries will soon have a new life to remind future generations about one of this countrys founding fathers. I want to be able to display it after that process so well definitely have it on display at Union College for everybody to come see. And wed like to connect it up with the skylars and a little bit of our own history here. I did not know that George Washington did not wear a wig. In fact, powdered his own hair. As if he needed to burnish the legacy more. Real hair. Real hair. Real hair. Apparently giving people hair and it was 18th century version of a selfie. We exchange locks of hair at the end of every show. It is an icy beverage while still growing on the vine. Im don at a vineyard in upstate new york. You dont even know what your exact birth date is. I dont. Ive narrowed it down to a couple of days. I was raised on a Beautiful Mountain in idaho. It was a beautiful place. But my father had the radical beliefs and we were a bit isolated. There was no school. We never went to the doctor, not even when we were injured and my father had a junkyard and got injured quite a bit. Seriously. You had head for the hills bags. Had to be ready to go all the time. There was fear and successful schism of the federal government and possibly because of the way we were living and force us to go to school. That kind of thing. Your father believed that all these forms of government were agents of the illunati, right . Yeah. Whether it was doctors or public education, yeah. He was very concerned about them. Describe for people what working in the junkyard was like. Not just sorting seat belts. No. It was quite dangerous. I dont think that its my dad didnt value our safety. He didnt have the bone in the head saying this is dangerous. Dont do it like this. We would get injured a lot and then with the beliefs about doctors and hospitals then we would treat those injuries at home. You were impaled. Your brothers leg caught on fire. Your father severely injured by an explosion and all treated at home by your mother who was making tinctures and essential oils in the kitchen . Yeah. My father was next to a car when it exploded and really badly burned and i think it proves it didnt that he didnt care about us but just the way that his mind worked, the beliefs he had. One for team usa the other for the unified korean team. And a man who went to Great Lengths all for a cup of coffee. His incredible story is the subject of a new book by author dave eggers who joins us in a Rare Television interview. Thats ahead. First our top story this hour, guilty plea from rick gates, former Senior Adviser to President Trumps Election Campaign. Gates guilty plea is to charges of federal conspiraciy and making false statements. He will cooperate with special counsel Robert Muellers russia investigation. The fifth person to enter a guilty plea as part of muellers probe. Paula reed is at the white house with more. Paula, good morning. Reporter good morning. The gates plea deal capped off what has been a busy week for special counsel Robert Mueller, pleading guilty to conspiring against the United States and lying to investigators during a recent interview. Under the terms of this plea deal, he now only faces about five to six years in prison instead of the decades that he was facing and even that five to six years could be shortened if he cooperates. Gates is now the third trump associate known to be working with muellers investigation and his plea deal put the spotlight squarely on Paul Manafort, who has given no indication he intends to cooperate with mueller. The special counsel has been intensifying the pressure on manafort, filing 32 new counts against him and a dutch attorney he used to do business with and now they have the gates plea deal. As gates testifies against manafort, its unlikely he will be able to avoid any criminal conviction. There is always the chance, though, he could be pardoned by the president if he was convicted. Manafort in a statement on friday reiterated his desire to continue to fight what he describes as untrue charges and is expected to go to trial in the fall. Anthony . Paula reed at white house. Thanks, paula. President trump may face a backlash against gun rights activists, speaking to conservatives at the conservative Political Action conference outside washington friday. The president said he would rather see trained teachers with guns instead of sheriffs deputies who had a chance to stop alleged Florida Shooter nikolas cruz but did not. I would rather have somebody that loves their students and wants to protect their students than somebody standing outside that doesnt know anybody and doesnt know the students and, frankly, for whatever reason, decided not to go in, even though he heard lots of shots being fired inside. The president said an armed teacher would have shot the gunman quickly. Governor rick scott said he wants to make it illegal for anyone under 21 or someone with Mental Illness to purchase a gun. He also wants an armed Law Enforcement officer at every school. For more insight on how some educators are responding to this push, were joined from columbus, ohio, by becky pringle, the Vice President of National Education association. Good morning, beck. I good morning, alex. What is your response to the president s suggestion that armed teachers would be a better deterrence against armed shooters than perhaps sheriffs deputies . Im an eighth grade science teacher, the wonder years. I cannot imagine having the additional responsibility of using a loaded gun to protect my children. Thats not what our students are asking for. Its not what educators all over this country are asking for. That is not what we need to protect our children. Becky, what are you specifically hearing from teachers on these proposals . Im so proud of our teachers, anthony. And theyre so creative. What they have responded with is a movement. Theyre saying arm me with counselors, arm me with social workers to help me address the growing needs that our students that are bringing with them in the classroom. Theyre saying arm me with tools and resources so that i have the opportunity to attend the individual needs of students. Thats what they want to be armed with. Not guns. Becky, the president was also critical of the armed deputy at sto Stoneman Douglas high school. He said a Security Guard doesnt know the children and doesnt love the children, in making his call to arm teachers. Your Organization Also represents school Security Guards. Whats been the reaction there . We do. But, you know, its very easy to criticize and blame when youre not in that environment. I listened to a teacher for parkland talk about guarding 65 students that day. She was trying to imagine as it would be with hundreds of students, as they were that day, running at her and have the additional responsibility of having a loaded weapon in her classroom. Thats not what shes asking for. Thats not what the students are asking for. Theyre asking for changes to our gun laws so that no one has the ability to have military grade assault weapons that are designed for one purpose, to kill as many people as possible in a short period of time. That is the issue at stake. And that is what our students are asking us to do. So, becky, what do you think of governor scotts proposal in florida to put a Law Enforcement officer in every Public School . This is what our educators are asking. Theyre asking for each community, each school community, our parents, our students, Law Enforcement, our administrators to come together and come up with solutions that work for them. They want to listen to their students and to the educators who are with them and figure out how theyre going to prepare, how theyre going to protect them. We need to listen to those who are closest to our students and do whats best to protect them. Becky, what kind of effect is this conversation around teachers and their responsibility with guns or without in the classroom . What effect is that having on the recruitment of young teachers to the field of education . Thats a really good question, alex. We certainly have had challenges to encouraging our young people to go in to education. We know that they dont go in to education for the big bucks or the shiny apples. They go in to education because they love their students and they want to be there for their students to, in my case, open up the wonders of science. Theyre not going there because they are going to have that extra responsibility of protecting them with a loaded gun. Not only are we worried about attracting new teachers to the profession, but were also worried about retaining those who are in the profession. Were already hearing not only from teachers but from School Secretaries and other support staff in our schools that this is not the kind of environment they want to work in. And any time someone is proposing more guns, that is not the solution. We do not want to turn our schools into prisons, and our teachers as armed guards and our students as prisoners. That is not the learning environment we need. Becky pringle, thank you for your time. During a rally friday on day two of work stoppage, Union Leaders said monday will be day three. Living through a harrowing journey and dramatic escape to bring one of the oldest coffees from yemen to the rest of the world. His story is now being told in a new book by celebrated author dave eggers. Cbs evening news anchor jeff glor sat down with them at the hudson Hotel Library and lounge right here in new york. Reporter 24 and working as a doorman at a San Francisco high rise when he got a delirious idea. Leave the bay area for yemen and start a coffee business. I see the coffee trees and get distracted. Reporter what he didnt plan on is getting trapped in the middle of a civil war. It was a story dave eggers felt compelled to tell. Im always attracted to stories of self invention, entrepreneurship and self creation. Reporter and thats what he has done . Nobody dreams the American Dream better than immigrants and the sons and daughters of immigrants. Reporter the journey is documented by eggers in the monk of mocha. Port city is where the firstever coffee beans were exported in the 15th century. The amount of pluck and just naive arrogance, he calls it, that goes in to starting a business from scratch, going to yemen, in the knowing anything about coffee culture invasion, rallying and organizing all these farmers around a new idea, a new way of life, its incredibly inspiring. Reporter naive arrogance . Yeah. I think the lack of knowledge really helped me. I had these digs i would write up, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities. I had al qaeda, pirates, political instability. Reporter minor things. Standard for every startup. Algerian pirates. Looking back at these reports i wrote myself i thought what was i thinking . And on the pro side it was this might work . On the pro side it was im building a bridge between two worlds. Reporter eggers is known for telling personal stories, including his own. His first book, heartbreaking work of staggering genius, was a memoir about raising his younger brother after losing both parents to cancer. It went to number one on the New York Times best seller list. For this book, eggers spent years listening to alkanshalis story. During one trip, alkanshali found himself trapped as bombs rained down on the capital. Yemens civil war had begun. These blasts, these air strikes, theres no pattern. You hear the ground shake and children crying. And it was very hard to live that moment. People were really weeping. At one point, people stopped weeping. There was a tranquility that came about. We decided to submit, let go and know were not in control anymore. And that feeling really helped me a lot. What was that process like, talking to him and taking him through your story . I think of it because starting backwards, a lot of those traumatic experiences had just happened to me weeks before. So going really deep into the pain and those moments with dave was, in a way, somewhat therapeutic to me. Reporter good idea. Tough idea but a good idea. Well, we i always go into it, knowing at any point we can stop and nothing gets printed without mokhtars approval. We meet when he wants to meet and we talk about whatever hes comfortable talking about. Thats why it takes a long time. Almost three years in this case. Reporter what surprised you most about the process with him . I guess i came in to coffee as a skeptic. I had my first cup of coffee when i was 35, when my daughter was born and needed some mental acuity during the day. I needed a different kind of caffeine. And i used it as fuel. Put a lot of sugar and drank it to stay awake. I was still kind of cynical about the 4. 75 cup of coffee or more expensive. I thought thats ridiculous. Thats pretentious. To then backtrack and say what should something cost . And the coffee gets picked individually. Every cherry has to be chosen by a picker, put in their bag. Im always thinking of the person who first picks that ripe cherry. You cant get these people out of your mind. Reporter the monk of mokha gradually weaves together the country, mokhtar. Single humanitarian crisis in the world, 70 of the population. Over 3 million refugees now because of this war. And for me, on one hand, i do feel helping my farmers make a better living, help people learn more about yemen. But i sometimes do feel that its a small dent compared to the suffering thats going on. And i know its horrible and i believe my project will outlast these bombs. Reporter he thinks coffee can heal division here at home as well. Cup of coffee has crossed cultures and borders to find its way to you. Its an Incredible Opportunity to engage each other. Reporter for cbs this morning saturday, jeff glor, new york. While most produce suffers in freezing cold weather, it is the magic ingredient in a very special variety of wine. Don dahler takes us to upstate new york with the sweet story of rare vintage that relies on old man winter to bear essential fruit. Reporter each year at the casa larga vinyard in finger Lakes District of new york, some grapes are intentionally left to freeze on the vine. When harvested, they will become the coveted delicacy called ice wine, a dissent drink with origins dating back to 18th century germany. Although most of the worlds ice wine is made in canada, the u. S. Is brunging the best. For casa largas vineyard, its a family affair. It started with nigh dad. I was in the wine shop on the tasting bar and i had a lot of people requesting the product and said to my dad and brother, we should find some winery that makes this and bring it in. He said, oh, no, were going to make our own. How are they harvested. It has to be have harvested by hand. Theyre so frozen that the stems literally just kind of break right off. A lot of manual labor. A lot of manual labor. You have to press them the day you pick them. Its not a 9 00 to 5 00 development. Some years we started at midnight. Some years, at 4 00 a. M. And it has to be cold nurnd, around 14, 15 threes to harvest and then press the grapes. This is the bottling room. Yes, it is. Is it trickier to make ice wine than regular wine . I think it is. Its hard to keep the grapes healthy for that extra month or two waiting for the freezing temperatures. What is it like when it comes out of the cask . Its extremely sweet compared to most wines were used to. When we pick the grapes they have twice the sugar regular grape juice has. When you press out the frozen grape, barely any juice coming out of it. For a ton of grapes where i would normally get 150 gallons, i get about 15 gallons of ice wine grapes. This is your magic elixir. Yes. This is our ice wine. You can see its thick er and richer. Because of the price, ice wine usually starts at about 40 a bottle but prices can range to the 100s. This is a prokt where youre hoping for a cold winter. Thats right. The climate is changing, so it hasnt been as easy as in the past. For every wine bolt we produce, we could make four bottings of tradition a wine. Is this more for the recover of the tradition than profit . Yes, definitely. Theres a lot of profit with ice wine but theres risk as well. With it comes a lot of satisfaction. A toefts. A toast. To cold winters and warm hearts. Exactly. Im glad don dahler like thad assignment i can see. A real tough one. A heavy lift pulling ice wine to your lips. Its delicious stuff. And theyre having an ice wine festival. Indeed they are. It was stressful to watch just because, you know yeah, it was very back and forth. Like you said, it went into overtime and a shootout. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, nervous for her and her team. They won and it was complete just, yeah, so happy and relieved it was over and she could celebrate. Very happy and proud. Born to a belgian father and american mother, chef Robert Wiedmaier grew up helping out on a working farm. He got a job in the washington, d. C. Area. In 1999 he opened the elegant marcels which consistently earns among the highest marks for its french and belgian menu and its extraordinary service. Chef robert weed mire, welcome to the dish. Good morning. Thank you for having me. Im excited to be here. Lets talk about the table. It looks great. What we have is Prince Island mussels. I serve a lot of mussels. We serve probably 10,000 pounds of mussels in a week. After that we go over to my classic dish at marcels is this dish with bacon and a sauce. Thats probably put both of my kids through private school. Then we have my roasted duck with chocolate and cherries. Love duck. You can do so many great things with it. Then we have my five onion soup that we serve. And then over here, the dessert is a Bread Pudding with a lemon glaze and mass nated raisins. What is in this glass . Brewed in belgian. Its a double blond brew. It came after the legendary statue where my father was born where the story goes where the giant on there had his hand cut off by bravo and hes throwing the hand off. Its in the plaza in antwerp. So thats my beer. Thats delicious. Its pretty good. American mother, european father. Who taught you about food . You know, my mom and my grandmother were really the force behind me getting to become a chef and also growing up in little tiny villages that were all farmers. I worked on farms, got down with the signed slaughtering animals and going to the market with my mom. She knew where to get the best food all over the little markets in germany and belgium. That really fostered my love of food and i just continued on with it. I never looked back. I feel very blessed that i never thought i was going to do anything else other than be a chef. I want to talk about marcels. Its such an influential restaurant in the d. C. Area. But you went through an incredibly horrific scenario not long ago. Yeah, just recently. You had a massive flood. You had renovated a few years before. We did. Then a pipe broke during the freezing weather and flooded out the entire restaurant and we were closed for a month. Which is devastating for a restaurant. Yes. Sometimes insurmountable. Yes. I was lucky enough to be able to survive and pay all my employees and have everything fix and now were back up and running. We reopened february 1st. After 20 years, eve got a great following of clientele and fans and i thank all of them for continuing to dine at marcels and were rocking and rolling again. You have a number of locations in the washington area. How have you seen that citys dining scene change since youve been there . Its changed a lot. When i first came to washington, d. C. , we didnt have a lot of restaurants. There were some really good french restaurants and italian restaurants but not that many. Now we soo a lot of good casual restaurants and a lot of chefs from other cities are coming into d. C. And opening up and doing business there. The city is really thriving with restaurants right now. The population hasnt grown but the number of restaurants have. Its a great time to come andd in the nations capital. And the Restaurant Business is so competitive. Im always amazed when chefs like yourself keep so many restaurants a going and keep them distinctive. How do you do that . Its taking care of your staff, sourcing stavgs and constantly pushing the ebb vel lope to be the best you can be. I tell all my chefs, if youre going go to the game, lets go to the super bowl, get to the worlds cup. If youre not pushing it every day youre not in the right business. Youre not swimming. Youre sinking. I like the coach met for. Chef, as i ask you to sign this dish, i will ask you the question we always ask, which is if you could share this delicious bounty with anyone past or present, who would it be . Theres probably a lot of people. My mom for sure. If i could sit with a special chef is it would be the godfather of french cuisine because he was a mentor to a lot of the top chefs in france. And im a big franco file obviously. Its all worked out. Chef robert, thank you. For more of chef wiedmaier on the dish head to cbsnews. Com.
