As you wake up in the west, millions of americans are mourning the loss of the reverend billy graham. The worlds best known christian evangelist died this morning at his home in carolina. He was 99 years old. Graham preached in person and on tv for more than half a century. He helped lead a revolution in american religious life. Here is the life of the man called americas pastor. Billy graham shared his simple message with president s, World Leaders, and everyone else in range of his powerful voice. Reporter in the summer of 2005, billy graham preached at what he called his final crusade. Deep inside we need Something Else. That Something Else can be brought about by jesus. Reporter the threeday event in new york city was the culmination of a lifetime of evangelism. Seven decades of spreading the christian gospel to more than 200 Million People in 185 countries around the world. God loves the world. Reporter raised in the fundamentalist faith in North Carolina, graham dedicated his life to christ. Every problem that you face. Reporter he created his own brand of populist evangelism. His crusades, as he called them, were soon attracting millions, in person and later, through television. We are ready to march under the banner of almighty god. Reporter graham became a counselor and confidant to every american president beginning with harry truman. But graham himself denied he had a role in making policy. He said, i dont advise them, i pray with them. Despite his proximity to power, graham was resolutely nonpartisan, fearing that political favoritism would damage his ministry. In moments of National Crisis such as the Oklahoma City bombing, graham was sought out for his ability to comfort and console with simplicity and elegance. Weve been reminded that a cruel event like this that demonstrate human evil also brings out the best of us. Reporter former president s attended the dedication of his library in North Carolina. It is there he will be laid to rest alongside his wife ruth. They were married 64 years. At her funeral he said, we were called by god as a team. Graham looked ahead to the end of his life with enormous faith. So many times lately, ive been asked do i fear death. No, i look forward to death with great anticipation. Im looking forward to seeing god facetoface. A short time ago, President Trump offered a tribute to graham, tweeting there was nobody like him, he will be missed by christians and all religions. A very special man. You know, he advised president s, as we said in the piece, and certainly Lyndon Banes Johnson was very close to him and he relied on him in the wake of president kennedys assassination. They all did, so many other people relied on him. Having gone to one of his revival sermons in 2006 which he kept going even after 2005, people streamed to the altar call to hear that message and be moved by it. It was quite something. A wonderful way to feel, to die at 99 and say im looking forward to seeing god facetoface, a beautiful sentiment. Thank you, vlad. President trump is taking the first steps toward tougher gun regulations one week after the Florida School shooting. The president tweeted, we must now focus on strengthening background checks, which could mean anything from legislation the nra supports to legislation it strongly opposes. Today the president will hold a listening session with not only members of the Parkland Community but also those impacted by past School Shootings in columbine and sandy hook. We have to do more to protect our children. Reporter the president told the Justice Department to take swift action. We must actually make a difference. Reporter efforts to ban bump stocks last year were stalled by the nra and republican leaders. We think the regulatory fix is the smartest, quickest fix. Reporter the nra disapproved of tuesdays directive, arguing that banning firearms and accessories has been shown time and again to not prevent criminal activity. A shooter in las vegas used bump stocks in october to kill 58 people in the deadliest shooting in u. S. History. Well be talking about gun laws as time goes by. Reporter President Trumps personal views continue to evolve. In his 2000 book the america we deserve, mr. Trump wrote, i generally oppose gun control but i support the ban on assault weapons, a position he reversed while running for office. Now in response to the outcry from students and activists, the white house is signaling he may reverse his position. We havent closed the door on any front. Reporter they may consider changing the age limit for those purchasing military style weapons. Its on the table for us to discuss. Reporter its not clear how many of the Parkland Student activists were invited to the white house. Yesterday one of the more outspoken, david hogg, said that he had turned down an invitation to come here in favor of a prior tv commitment. John, he explained that the president had also been invited to that tv town hall. Margaret, thanks. Buses carrying dozens of students from Stoneman Douglas high arrived in tallahassee last night, greeting lawmakers from both parties right now. I want you to listen. I want you to read the messages that one of your friends has been shot. I want you to process that. Reporter the students are hoping they can convince lawmakers to pass new legislation like stricter background checks and a ban on assault weapons. Senator book told us that their trip was completely funded by her and other lawmakers on both sides of the aisle out of their own pockets. Thank you very much, adriana. Its so inspiring to hear young people lobby legislators, knowing that their voices can be heard, that they can make a difference, and also to present the pain that they felt to people who were not there. And i think people are saying, norah, thats the difference between this and sandy hook. These kids are there, they can speak up and want you to know. It reminds many people of the Civil Rights Movement back in the day. Those young people spoke up and they made a difference to change the civil rights in this country. And many people believe that could happen again this time. We will see. Two more victims of last weeks shooting will have their funerals today. Hundreds gathered yesterday. Only on cbs this morning we have new details about the mysterious death of a Border Patrol agent in texas. President trump promised back in november to bring the killers of agent martinez to justice. He used the death to renew calls for a wall on the mexico border. But the fbi now believes that martinezs death was, indeed, an accident. David begnaud traveled to southern texas to uncover what federal investigators believe actually happened to him. David, good morning. Gayle, good morning. This happened near the town of van horn about 100 miles east of the city of el paso. About 30 miles from the u. S. mexico border. Now the fbi poured its resources into this investigation. They did more than 650 interviews and 26 inches. And while the president and other politicians used the death to make a political point, we have learned thefbi believes what happened was an accident, and not a crime. That is the culvert where makent martinez was found dying in november. Its located along a quiet stretch of interstate 10 near the mexico border. The area looks like its in the middle of nowhere. Martinez was responding to a tripped sensor along a known drug smuggling route. He radioed for backup, a Law Enforcement source tells cbs news martinez then parked on the eastbound side of interstate 10. He turned off his head lights, and kept his emergency lights off so potential smugglers wouldnt see him coming. It was a moonless night. There are no street lights out here. So really the only light that you have would be a flashlight, or the headlights of a passing vehicle. According to our source, age edge martinez, who was not using night vision equipment ran across i10, through the grass divider and across the webb lanes and ran right off the edge of a culvert that had no guard rail or barrier to stop him. Im 61, so if i go to walk in one of the culverts, you know, put my hand here, the estimation its about a nine or ten foot drop if the agent were to fall off of it. Accord to to our source, agent steven garrlow may have made the same mistake, running across the interstate and right off that edge. The fbi suspects garland fell off at a different point because his blood was found about 22 feet from agent martinezs body. A Border Patrol dispatcher was able to make contact with agent garland after his fall. Despite his injuries, garland was able to get back to his vehicle, and turn on his emergency lights. At that time, garland told the dispatcher something to the effect of, we ran into a culvert. Or i ran into a culvert. Or i think i ran into a culvert. Now the dispatcher wrote in his log, thinks they ran into a culvert. The fbi found no other footprints at the scene. No defensive wounds on either man. Or any dna belonging to anyone other than the two agents. Are you open to the possibility that maybe this was an accident . No. Doesnt make sense to you . No. Its been three months since agent martinez died and his fiancee angie is not convinced by the fbis theory. She says martinezs injuries were too severe to have been caused by a fall. Shes also suspicious because toxicology tests found a pain medication in his system. Somebody convinced him to take that medication. I think. To make it seem like it was an accident. Youre not suggesting he was drugged . At this point, i think it was probably given to him intentionally. Even in a normal dose, sometimes there could be some impairment of ability to function. But very little impairment. We asked forensic pathologist dr. Michael bauden to look at martinezs autopsy report which states that he died of Blunt Force Injuries to the head. But classified the manner of death as undetermined. This is all very typical for a fall. And not for a fight. Cbs news has learned agent garland suffered multiple broken vertebrae and had a brain bleed. The fbi believes he had amnesia, and had nothing to do with agent martinezs death. They found no evidence of animosity or conflict between him and agent martinez. Despite the fbis findings, Union Officials at the national Border Patrol council have called it a heinous attack. And they refuse to back down from that. This group of drug smugglers attacked and ambushed him. It looks like he was literally beaten to death. So no smugglers were ever found. We asked the white house for comment on this story, and they told us no. We called Union Officials four times. We left 50 voice mace, we sent ten emails and five text messages. They finally told us the people who were authorized to talk would not be available. What a mystery. What does the local Sheriffs Office think . He told me look we got the call as an accident. Thats why we responded with our medical bags. Because if wed have thought it was an attack we would have responded with Assault Rifles. Well, thank you. Glad we followed up on that story. Research shows that daily use of peanut protein capsules could desensitize children to the allergy but there are still some hurdles to overcome. Dr. Jon lapook looks at the potential benefits. Good morning, norah. This is a huge problem for our nations kids. More than 1 million children in the u. S. Suffer from peanut allergies which can range from mild to extremely severe. For many parents a daily medicine that could ward off an allergy attack would be a life changer for them and their kids. 12yearold Aidan Robertson and his mother lisa didnt know he was allergic, until he was 2 years old, and ate peanut butter. Its horrifying, that moment when you see your child all of a sudden, his face was swelling, and swelling and swelling. Doctors quickly treated aidan with an antihistamine. But every day the robertsons are on guard against an allergy attack. Ap voiding any food that might contain peanuts. And peanut oil, too. You dont know how many things thats actually in. And its in a lot of things. Now, a Company Called aimmune is offering a new option. It gave peanut protein powder sprinkled over food to nearly 500 children age 4 to 17. At the end of six months, 67 of them were able to tolerate the equivalent of roughly two peanuts. Enough to avoid a potentially deadly reaction to a small, accidental exposure. It changes the way the immune system sees peanuts. So it changes it from seeing it as something dangerous, to something that is safe. Dr. Jonathan tamm is a pediatric allergy specialist who helped recruit test subjects for the company. Its not going to be for everybody. But for certain families that are very anxious, having accidental exposures, this is a great therapy for them. The companys findings have not yet been reviewed by independent experts. Id be very interested to see, you know, further documentation on the study, and kind of what comes of it, before we would jump in. There are some risks when you take the drug. It can cause reactions to peanuts, stomach pains, mouth itching. Up to 19 of the kids had to drop out from the study, because of these side effects. Still, aidan says he loved to worry less about his peanut allergy. Especially on one day in particular. Its been hard because half of my halloween candy is gone. All of the peanut stuff is out the window. We can empathize with that. This isnt an allout cure. Were still far from letting kids with severe allergies eat all their peanut filled halloween candy. The Company Plans to file for approval by the fda administration by the end of the year. Promising . It does look promising. Im hearing cautiously optimistic. For parents, can you imagine the relief . Its a nightmare for them. A huge relief. Plus a snickers bar is something to behold. And be held. And be eaten. Well done. Well done. Now im hungry. Dont stop eliquis unless your doctor tells you to. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. If you had a spinal injection while on eliquis call your doctor right away if you have tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily. And it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots. Plus had less major bleeding. Both made eliquis right for me. Ask your doctor if switching to eliquis is right for you. Welcome back to cbs this morning. Heres a look at some of this mornings headlines. The Tampa Bay Times reports that a florida lawmakers aide was fired after he repeated an online Conspiracy Theory about Florida School shooting survivors. A Tampa Bay Times reporter tweeted about an email sent by benjamin kelly. It included a screen shot of the survivors from a different interview. He wrote that they are, quote, not students here, but actors that travel to various crises when they happen. He said later that he made a mistake. Kelly worked for a republican state representative Sean Harrison who tweeted im appalled at and strongly denounce the comments about the Parkland Students. A lot of people feel that way. Makes you wonder why anybody would take on those students at this particular time in any way. Thats why he was fired. Thats right. Just a little restraint. Ahead, while Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students lobby florida legislators on gun control well hear from people affected by other massacres on what to do about gun violence. A look at how olympic figure skating has changed and why that may hurt americas chances for medals. First heres todays eye opener at 8 00. Graham preached for more than half a century. He helped lead a revolution in american religious life. Billy graham wanted the world to hear his call to faith and shared that message with president s World Leaders and everyone else. In the wake of last weeks massacre, the white house is showing a new openness to gun control measures. The students are inside meeting with lawmakers. They plan to tell those lawmakers they need to get stricter on gun control. Graphic images from the ground show the reality of what is an escalating civil war that has civilians trapped in the middle. Plane of you in the west are waking up to temperatures colder than normal. Freeze warnings in effect across californias central valley. Lindsey vonn missed the last olympicss in sochi because she was injured. She has been waiting eight years for the downhill moment and it lasted less than 100 seconds. An italian tennis champ learned its better to be lucky than risk it. Oh. Extraordinary. He chucked his racket after serving. Managed to pick it up and win the point. Can you believe it . Ive never seen that in my life. Im gayle king with Norah Odonnell and john dickerson. We begin with sad news, the reverend billy graham died this morning at his North Carolina home. He was the worlds bestknown christian evangelist for decades and played a role in the development of religious fund mentalism in america. Graham preached to an estimated 250 Million People around the world. He knew a dozen u. S. President s and participated in most of their inaugurations even though he denied any political role. His evan galism started after world war ii with the first of what he called crusades. He combined preaching with activism challenging people to make their lives better by following jesus christ. He spread the gospel using tv and radio and visited more than 185 nations during 70 years of his ministry. Graham led his final crusade in 2005. He survived a string of ailments in his later years including cancer and pneumonia. Billy graham was 99 years old. 100 birthday would have been in november. Students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School are marching the florida State Capitol this morning. About 100 students arrived in tallahassee last night on three busses. They want new gun laws to prevent shootings like the one that killed 17 of their classmates and teachers a week ago. Hundreds of local High School Students and parents were there to cheer them on, holding a rally while others rally state lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. Adriana diaz made the trip to tallahassee and with them now. Good morning. Good morning. The students are in the building for their meetings with lawmakers. They are having those meetings in groups of ten. So there are going to be breakout rooms where the meetings will be had so students can talk to them directly in a small setting. This is the Capitol Building where the house turned down an attempt to vote on a bill that would ban Assault Rifles. There were Stoneman Douglas students in the gallery and when they saw that happened some of them got emotional. We spoke to state senator lauren book who told us lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are working on legislation to raise the minimum age to 21 for anyone who wants to buy an assault weapon. That would provide more funding for Mental Health in schools and funding to tear down the freshman building at the school where the shooting happened. Now, theyre just 13 days left in the legislative session and senator book told us if they dont get something done within that time, it would be, quote, unacceptable. Thanks. Big name celebrities are backing an upcoming gun control rally in washington. The march for our lives is planned for march 24th. The event is organized by students aimed at preventing another mass school shooting. George clooney and his wife amal say they will donate 500,000 to help fund the march. They said they were inspired by the courage and eloquence of the students. 60 minutes contributor Oprah Winfrey wanted to join forces and is promising the same amount. Director Steven Spielberg and movie executive Jeffrey Katzenberg say they and their wives will match the donations. They need to raise money to make sure the kids can get there to pay for travel costs and expenses they will need. Interesting to see how many others will contribute. President trump will meet with the parents, teachers and students at the white house today to talk about school safety. A new quinnipiac poll shows 66 of American Voters support stricter gun laws. Thats the highest number ever measured in the poll. It is up 19 Percentage Points from december 2015 and found that 97 of voters support universal background checks. Margaret brennan is at the white house with the latest on the story. Good morning. Good morning. Well members of the Parkland Community will share their stories when they meet face to face with President Trump. They along with other individuals impacted by past School Shootings in columbine and sandy hook are part of todays listening session. Details of that meeting have been closely held, but we know at least one prominent Student Activist from Stoneman Douglas high school has turned down the invitation to todays meeting ahead of that session President Trump has displayed an openness to at least consider stricter regulations to improve school safety. Last night he tweeted, quote, we must now focus on strengthening background checks. Yesterday, he directed the Justice Department to ban bump stocks and other devices that turn semiautomatic guns into automatic weapons. Bump stocks were used in the Las Vegas Concert back in october that killed nearly 60, but they were not used in last weeks Florida Shooting. The announcement when it happened yesterday seemed to catch many in the atf by surprise since they are still technically in the process of reviewing whether or not they can legally restrict these devices. Norah . All right. Margaret, thank you so much. Ahead well talk to six people directly affected by gun violence, including the mother of a man killed in the Pulse Night Club shooting. What the group says now twotime olympian and former skating analyst dick button has harsh words for what the points system is doing to his sport. Its boring. I dont like seeing people do this. As students push for gun control in tallahassee, theres a nationwide reckoning over how to stop Mass Shootings and violence. We spoke with six people directly impacted by gun violence about assault weapons and their place in society and the majority of the group owns guns and shared their experiences and what they believe needs to happen to prevent deadly shootings. Good morning. Good morning. An honest and at times uncomfortable conversation. Four of the six people we spoke to own guns combined they own at least 13, assault weapons like the ar15s we keep hearing about in Mass Shootings. The groups are imran yousuf, bouncer at the Pulse Night Club in orlando the scene of the 2016 shooting massacre, christine leinonens son was among the dozen whons died in the shooting. Austin eubanks survived the Columbine High School shooting, a gun owner but not a gun enthusiast. Cobe williams has witnessed gun violence throughout his life growing up in chicago. And kelsey and tobey clark escaped the las vegas massacre, the largest mass shooting in u. S. History. Kelsey was 8 months pregnant at the time. Raise your hands if you own a gun or in the market for a gun. How many do you own . Many. More than ten . Yes. And are any of them assault weapons . Yes. And you own these weapons prior to las vegas . Yes. And your outlook on opening these types of weapons has not changed . No. Why not . For us at least, being comfortable with them is important. Just having them for defense in our own home is huge. Austin you watched your best friend shot . I did. Would you have believed years later you would see 200 or more School Shootings. No. Kobe, you witnessed gun violence throughout your life growing up in chicago. Im on the ground seeing shooting and stuff every day in these communities. New york, baltimore, chicago, and on and on and on. Christine, you were a police officer. Kelsey you currently are. And yet, your views are so different when it comes to this topic. I lost my son in a mass shooting. He should be mourning my death. Its not fair. And it was done because of an assault gun. We have to name it. He died with nine bullets from an assault weapon. Hes only one of over 100 people that were killed within a couple of minutes. How long were you in labor with your child . And for a son to die in a split second and so many, weve lost so many. My son was killed with an assault weapon. What are you going to do about it . What are you going to do forme. What are you going to do for your child, the kids of chicago, other kids in high school. What are we going to do for them . I was the victim of a mass shooting that happened while an assault weapons ban was in place. Im not one of those people that believes that an assault weapon ban is going to solve our problem, but i do think that it can bring down the loss of life while we focus on the underlying issues of Mental Health. Im not willing to accept this is just the new normal. Kelsey, are you nervous about sending your son to school . Yes. It makes me worry to a degree. As sad and scary as this is where we are in society right now we dont have to stay here. So frustrating every time one of the tragedies occurs, everybody fractures in one of two camps, Mental Health or gun control. I dont dig my heels in on either side. The problem is on both sides. What i would like to see is significant funding put behind a Nonpartisan Group of experts who can actually study this. The United States doesnt have a monopoly of mentally ill people and yet this seems to be a uniquely american problem. Whats the nextte a lot of these things that take place you got to be able to stop it on the front end. Parents need to be more present with their kids. You need to be involved. You need to know who their friends are, what theyre doing. When it comes to gun rights and any sort of legislation, what is the limit for you . Im open to ideas to fix the problems that we have, but when people just want to ban something just because somebody did something wrong with it, i think thats not helping the issue at all. Yes, we can lock up major pstop stabbings come back up . O theyre not going to kill 49 people in 2 1 2 minutes with a knife. Do you think congress has done enough . Theyve done nothing. Theyve done worse. Thats why we have to elect strong democrats like chris murphy from connecticut. Its part of the problem, though, is the whole conversation gets politicized. The solution it is political though. The solution not to elect strong democrats. It is political. Republicans that caused the problem. We have to name it. Were getting caught up in one small, small portion of this issue. What do you think . I dont believe is congress responsible . Its on the people. I mean, in my opinion, gunfree zones dont work. What would the ideal solution to Mass Shootings i would be okay with background check, extended background check, psychological test. Even safety training. Are you in favor of eliminating bump stocks . Yes. What do you think the solution is to live in a society where you have the right to open the weapons you own responsibly and christine has the right to know her son went to a night club and will not be slaughtered . Were so far apart. Were not going to do what she wants or what i want. We need a common ground. As a High School Student who witnessed a mass shooting, you see these students in florida now really galvanized. Do you think that parkland will be that event that changes . I hope so. The activism that im seeing out of parkland is truly inspiring. Theyre standing up. I mean, i think more kids and more people around the world need to stand up, though. Because if we dont, well keep sitting here talking about it. What is your message to the president and congress on this topic . Do something. I think it needs to be harder to get guns. Listen to the people, hear our ideas, hear what we have to say. Im tired of the whole, the left, the right, were pitted against each other and its just its sickening. When you come together and figure out a solution. As you can see things got pretty heated during the discussion and its understandable how the frustrations carry on in washington among politicians. What you didnt see is after the filming stopped each of those Panel Members gave each other a hug and they all agree, that change is needed. Civil discourse is needed. Yes. Human connection they all share regardless of how complicated the issue is. I want to thank them all. Yeah. It was a great discussion and i think what i heard from it, was that even those who have a large number of guns in their home, including assault weapons, believe that there should be believe in safety. First and foremost. A lot of people who join the nra believe in safety and they do support additional background checks on those who have Mental Health issues and others. Yeah. Thats a way to start this change. I was very drawn to austin ubanks who certainly survived columbine but to say, you know, this back and forth and politicizing it and just be anger on both sides, doesnt get doesnt lead to any changes. Its interesting that the clarks who have been through an Assault Rifle shooting are still supporting it. Im surprised by that. Im very happy we had cobe of a reminder of what happens in inner city streets across the country on a daily basis. Very well done. To hear more personal stories from the group and how they are affected by the news of recent Mass Shootings, head over to cbsthismorning. Usa today asks, how common is Sexual Misconduct in hollywood . A survey questioned more than 800 women who worked in a variety of jobs in the entertainment industry. 94 say they experienced harassment or assault during their careers. 21 say they were forced to do something sexual. 75 did not report these experiences out of fear of backlash. And of those who flagged misconduct, only 28 say their workplace situation improved after reporting the harassment. Pretty stunning numbers. He says its designed to be a symbol for longterm thinking. He is always thinking, thats for sure. The Portland Press herald says theres a revived lobster emoji with the correct number of legs. Soon after the proposed images of new emojis were released lobster lovers were really mad. The emoji only had steamed, you could say. The emoji only had eight legs and lobsters actually have ten legs, including their claws. Who knew. Well the lobster lovers knew. The tail was also tweaked a bit to make it more accurate. Got to get that right. Yeah. Something to get all buttered up about. Nora, never good. I was struggling. Tough crowd. We admire risk takers at this table. Yes, we do. There you go. Womens figure skaters on team usa have some challenges ahead in their quest for an olympic medal. All three skaters struggled in last nights short program. They all stumpabled in their routines. The american winter skaters medaled from 1968 to 2006. But in the last two winter games no u. S. Woman made the podium in the singles competition. Analysts say that could happen again in pyeongchang. Dana jacobson is there to show us how american women no longer dominate the sport. Dana, good morning. Good morning. We fell in love with Dorothy Hamill for her grace in that signature bob. We remember Peggy Fleming and Michelle Kwan floating on the ice. But today, u. S. Womens figure skaters seem to be lacking that same star power. And the question is why. Figure skating is a different sport now than it was when i competed. 2006 olympic silver medalist sasha cohen is an artistic skater. Known more for her graceful spirals than for her technical prowess. Its really, you know, a list of check boxes to hit, instead of presenting your unique personality and style. It is nice when i can skate and its not crowded, and youre listening to Frank Sinatra and you see the buildings. We caught up with cohen at bank of americas winter village in new york sfes bryant park. Its been twelve years since you won your olympic medal. And you were the last woman to win an individual figure skating medal. Why is that . I guess to flip it on its head, why did u. S. Women do well for so long . And i think as other countries have had medalists, it sparks more interest in their programs, and then theres more skaters going in, and rising to the top because they have those role models. Russia and japan have eclipsed the United States in this jump heavy era of figure skating. So far hes done five quads. And for the men the bar is even higher. Will he add another . This is number six . Yes the name of the game is now quadruples. Quadruple jumps. Kick button is the first skater to ever land a triple jump in competition. But the twotime olympic champion and longtime commentator says theres a difference between a perfect jump, and a perfect move. There are two aspects to skating. Dorothy hamill was interesting. Peggy fleming was interesting. Janet lynn was adoored because she was calm, quiet, and floated. You dont have time to do that today. Why not . Because, youre adding points come on, boom, boom, boom, boom, add the points but these days, its harder to know what the points mean. 206. 5. You used to be able to go into a bar and everybody would say, oh, they did not deserve a 5. 9. You now have a point system of 283. 4. What the heck does that mean . After a judging scandal at the 2002 olympics, the International Skating union redesigned the iconic sixpoint system to make it more objective. I think it was introduced with the right spirit, and it was a spirit of accountability. But i think its made everyone look the same. The irrepressible kick button has one word for that. Its boring i dont like seeing people do this. What do you want to see them do . I want to see them be creative. I want to see them perform. In a sport where raw athleticism seems to trump artistry quad toe triple toe. Skaters jump. That was clean. Whether they can land cleanly or not. You fall on your face and you get a point. I dont like seeing somebody fall down four or five times, and still win. What to watch for is the power and speed. Russia, japan and other countries are winning by teaching skaters to maximize points. And by subsidizing their athletes. If you were in russia, or china, you might have free ice. You would get paid to be an athlete. And because the physical demands have increased. Right up into it, yes top female skaters have shorter careers. You cant grow and mature and become a woman in figure skating, and still be able to keep up technically. And this ending represents what makes Nancy Kerrigan such a wonderful skater. Whale the Nancy Kerrigan Tonya Harding years may be an unfair comparison, interest and enthusiasm in figure skating has drastically declined since then. How do we get the enthusiasm back . Well, you have to have people that create enthusiasm. What i want to see is, as much as the quadruple jumps, is the performance level, and the personality level. I want to be able to fall in love with the skater. When youre playing a game, you have to play by the rules if you want to win. And right now, its a quad game. And thats where the points are accrued. And figure skating is an art. But its first and foremost a sport. In an opinion piece out in the New York Times, 1998 Gold Medalist Tara Lipinski also voiced her concerns, writing that young skaters in the United States were rewarded not for innovating and taking risk, attempting new combos for instance or trying more difficult jumps, but for skating cleanly. She said as those younger skaters moved up in the ranks, it left the u. S. Women unprepared to compete on the world stage. John . Dana jacobson in pyeongchang, thanks. First time author Tara Westover says she was taught as a child to avoid schools and hospitals. Shes in our toyota green room. There she is. Ahead, how she chartered her own path from survivalist upbringing to earning a i am extremely proud of jackie, gaby and stephanie. We worked with pg e to save energy because we wanted to help the school. They would put these signs on the door to let the teacher know you didnt cut off the light. The teachers, they would call us the energy patrol. So they would be like, here they come, turn off your lights those three young ladies were teaching the whole school about energy efficiency. We actually saved 50,000. And thats just one school, two semesters, three girls. Together, were building a better california. A womans account of her childhood experience off the grid inspired a critically acclaimed memoir. Te her father was a survivalist who distrusted all forms of government. Tara westover writing, quote, we have no medical records because we were born at home. We have no School Records because we never set foot in a classroom. At this moment according to the state of idaho and the federal government, i do not exist. She graduated from cambridge university. How did she do that . Her book is already on amazons bestseller list. Tara, congratulations. Bravo. I never read a story like this. I was curious. What is she going to look like. And you walked in looking so normal. I was relieved too. Give us a sense of your childhood. Youre the youngest of seven kids. You dont even know what your exact birthdate is. I dont. I was raised on this Beautiful Mountain in idaho. It was a beautiful place. But my father had these radical beliefs and because of these beliefs we were a bit isolated. There was no school. We never went to the doctor, not even when we were injured. My father had a junkyard and we were injured quite a bit. You guys were head for the hills bags. You were ready to go at all times. It was possibly because of the way we were living they may come and force us to go to school, that kind of thing. Your father believed that all these forms of government were agents of the aluminaty, right . Yeah. He had an idea it infiltrated all the institutions whether it was doctors, hospitals, he was very concerned about it. Describe what it was like working in the junkyard. You werent just sorgt sorting seatbelts. It wasnt that my dad wasnt wired about our safety. He didnt have that bone in his head. We would treat the injuries at home. You were impaled. Your brothers leg caught on fire. Your father nearly died from an explosion and your mother was at home making pink turs and essential oils in the kitchen. My father was the worst. He was standing next to a car when it exploded. He was badly burned. It wasnt that they didnt care about us. It was the way his mind worked. He was going live that way. A big part of the book is the relationship you have with one of your older brothers. You give him a pseudonym in the book. You call him shaun. You name the other brothers. You say he was extremely emotionally and physically abusive with you. Yes, he was. When i confronted my parents about it, they tried to convince me i was insane and i couldnt trust my own memories and ultimately that would lead to is strangement from my family. At first that was their choice. They os extra sized me for speaking up against my brother. It took a lot of years. Its important to say you have fwour brother, tony, tyler, richard, and luke. Youre not talking about any of those. Youre talking about shaun and you ive given him a fake name. Exactly. Your parents have a lair. They said, tara was a love daughter. Like her two brothers that got phds. Home school was a sufficient foundation to their education. Dwlou react to that. One of the reasons i wrote the book is their gaslighting of experiences. Their continual denial. I guess i would say i love my parents, i believe theyre good people, but i think i think the tragedy here isnt that bad people do bad things. Tragedy is what good people do to keep secrets. How were you able to get an education to go to harvard, cambridge, byu, when you had not really been to a classroom . Well, i had an older brother who had done the same thing. He educated himself. Bought the books and educated himself and he told me i should try to go. I bought an acp study guide and i tried to teach myself enough. I learned enough to scrape through the a. C. T. That statement isnt completely factual. I barely got through. I didnt know what the holocaust was. I once asked what it was. You came across a world you had never seen before and you said i dont know this world and everybody looked at you like where had you been. I think they thought i was denying it. But i meant it completely sincerely. I didnt know what it was. Did you have to write this book . A lot of it is claiming your own story from other people who are trying to tell you your story. Did you have to in order to complete that . I felt like i needed to to come to terms with the decision to let go of my family. When i was writing my book, the questions were what does it mean to belong to a family and what obligations do we have to our family and what are the limits and what do you do when you want to be loyal to your family but you feel its in conflict with loyal to yourself. You said its possible to love and hate at the same time. You said in a family like ours, no crime is worse than telling the truth. What is your relationship like with today . Half im close with. Even the half im estranged from, i love them. Im not angry toward them. I think anger is a mechanism you need to get out of dangerous situation. But once youre out, once youre safe, you dont need it anymore. Do you talk with your mom and dad . I email with my mother occasionally, a little bit. I limited that because i did have a bit of a mental breakdown. My parents cob vinced me that i was insane about my brother and i had a complete mental breakdown. Theres only so much of that i can have in my life. Tara, really bravo. You say a mental breakdown is never obvious to the people having them. Thank you for sharing your story with us today.
