President trump is expected to sign off on a controversial classified republican memo alleging fbi and Justice Department abuse of surveillance powers. Despite strong pushback from the fbi and democrats, the memo could be released today. It deals with the investigation into possible ties between the Trump Campaign and russia. Wendy gillette is here in new york. Wendy, good morning. Good morning, annemarie. The memo has set off quite the firestorm in washington. We dont know yet exactly what it says because it has not been made public. Republicans have stated the document will spell out surveillance abuses by the fbi during the russia investigation. Democrats and the fbi said the memo is flawed and biased and should never see the light of day. Sources tell cbs news that later today President Trump plans to give the thumbsup to releasing a gop memo on the russia probe. The fourpage document authorized by house intelligence chair devin nunes outlines surveillance techniques. If American Civil Liberties were abused, then that needs to come to light so that that doesnt happen again. Its not up to President Trump when the memo would get released. His green light means it would get sent back to the House Intelligence Committee where they would decide on a timetable. Its said that the memo omits key facts. Its an attempt to paint a misleading portrait of the fbi and department of justice and may pave the way for the president to argue that he can fire people, which would interfere with the investigation. But republicans say the memo is not politically motivated. It does not impugn the Mueller Investigation or the Deputy Attorney general. Fbi director, christopher wray, a trump appointee, does not want the memo released. The white house spent the day yesterday quashing rumors that wray was getting ready to resign in protest. Fbi brass have made it clear how they stand and a very unusual move the agency released an unsigned statement that said, quote, there are grave concerns about material omissions of fact in the memo. Former fbi director james comey also chimed in, tweeting that all should appreciate the fbi speaking up and that he wishes more of our leaders would. Annemarie . Wendy gillette here in new york. President trump mocked democrats and said they were unwilling to work with them. Speaking at a meeting in washington yesterday the president accused democrats of doing nothing to help young people brought here illegally at the risk of being deported, socalled dreamers. The democrats are awol, theyre missing in action. Were saying where are they, we have a proposal, we never hear from them because i dont think they want to solve the daca problem. I think they want to talk about it. I think they want to obstruct. Last week the white house said mr. Trump would endorse a plan allowing dreamers to seek citizenship in exchange for changes in the immigration system. Police now believe the shooting at a Los Angeles Middle School was an accident. Police say the suspect, a 12yearold girl had brought a semiautomatic handgun to school. Shes been booked for negligent discharge of a firearm. Four students were wounded. One was shot in the head. He is in critical condition, but is expected to recover. A 30yearold woman was also injured. 18 people were injured this morning when a van plowed into a group of people at a park in shanghai. Police believe the crash was an accident. They say a man who was smoking ignited the gas canisters he was transporting. The van veered onto a sidewalk and burst into flames. The driver and two others were seriously injured. Dr. Larry nassars third and final sentencing hearing resumes today with more victims expected to speak. We wish we had one back. I was very upset and wanted answers. Reporter randall was one of 56 victims who spoke at last weeks sentencing hearing. She saw nassar for back pain. Sadly they took your word instead of mine. Reporter according to the 2004 Police Report released wednesday, randall told police she was scared and uncomfortable after nassar squeezed her breasts and was trying to put his finger in her vagina. Nassar admitted putting his finger in the vagina area but showed a power point presentation performing it himself. At that time it should have immediately been taken down to the Prosecutors Office and it wasnt. Reporter 12 more years would go by with nassar continuing to sexually abuse young women.
