Firefighters right now on the scene of a stubborn scrap yard fire in the city of richmond. And we go live to the scene with the latest on the fires status. Reporter good morning. If you are waking up in richmond for the viewers, you should know that you can go outside that toxic smoke is gone. Take a look at me. The firefighters still monitoring the mountain piles of scrap metal. You see some smouldering still. But for the most part, this fire is under control. And it started around 5 00 p. M. Yesterday. And the officials said that the pile of scrap is about 20 to 30 feet high and caught on fire at the Metal Management yard on cutting boulevard. It sent toxic fume into the area. And you can see the plume of of smoke for miles plume of smoke for miles. They warned people to stay inside. And the firefighter has trouble fighting the fire because of the high levels of carbon monoxide. And that kept them away from the stores of the flames from beginning. And then they used a giant claw to move the stores of hire and dig through giant piles to get to the hotspot. It was a large pile. Some were up to 30 feet tall. So we had to work with the heavy equipment to remove the metal and peel it away. As you do that it provides oxygen to the pile that gets flareups and that became a problem overnight trying to extinguish the fire. Reporter the hazmat team monitored the air quality and now residents in the area have the all clear. And no more shelterinplace order. You can go outside. The smoke is gone. But the firefighters continue to investigate what actually sparked this fire. And theyll remain on the scene basically making sure that all the hotspots are put out making sure to tackle all the remaining smouldering areas. President trump delivered his first state of the Union Address last night and talked about his first year accomplishments. But there was one hot button issue. And were going break it all down. There are no massive flames anymore. You cannot see the plume of smoke. But the fire crews are here working on the remaining pot spots. And the fire started around 5 00 p. M. Yesterday. And the fire officials said that the pile of scrap metal, about 20 to 30 feet high caught on fire on south Fourth Street. Is sent toxic flames into the area. They ordered people to stay inside and close the doors because the air was poisonous. The firefighter has trouble fighting the fire because of the high level of carbon monoxide. It kept them away from the source of the flames at the beginning. They used heavy equipment like a giant claw to most metal away from the source of the fire and they were useing that to dig through the giant piles to get to the hotspots.
