The mother bear and her three cubs were introduced to their big new habitat at the oakland zoo today. The mama bear broke into a kern county home in may and injured a woman inside. The bear was looking for food for her three cubs. It was possible they would be euthanized, but thanks to a new program at the oakland zoo, they found a new permanent home. It was a great chance for us to provide a home for bears that were otherwise doomed. It makes us feel really good to play that role. The new habitat has trees to climb, several dens and a swimming pool. The public can see the black bears starting in june. Shark attacks on the west coast are on the rise. Kayakers were their most common human target last year. Turns out the Shark Research committee documented nine attacks on the Pacific Coast last year. That is four more than we had in 2016, four of last years attacks involving kayakers including one in monterey county. The others involved surfers, paddleboarders and swimmers.
