Theres something for everyone. Thats intentional. Its how politics works. Reporter critics say the mtc shouldnt be trusted with more money. The question is how has mtc done in the past . Have they made lives better for the people of the bay area . My answer is absolutely not. Reporter but business groups are already lining up to campaign for the measure. Together with our Coalition Partners the Bay Area Council and spur we are already working hard to build a diverse, well funded and Effective Campaign that will be able to display the benefits of our improved projects. Reporter now heres the second part of this whole toll hike package. A lot of the money goes towards some really big ticket items that we talk about all the time, but no one has an idea how to pay for it, right . Another tube under the bay, maybe finally getting trains to the transbay terminal. Think of it as starter money for those large projects which need more money down the road, but the flip side of that is that there was also a warning today in that same meeting that the Trump Administration might not be as cooperative with those large projects. You could be putting money down on a new transbay tube but not getting the rest of that money for some time. Were live on treasure island, wilson walker, kpix5. Wilson, thank you. A big protest against google and its plans for a new mega campus in san jose, google is eyeing the area near deardon station. Its vision . A near 7 million square foot development. Protesters say the mega campus will only make the housing crisis worse. Len ramirez now at the scene. Reporter google is coming to downtown san jose. The only question now is will it only benefit hitech workers or will it benefit the city as a whole . Now members of the Group Silicon Valley rising staged a protest at downtown city hall this evening asking google to do the right thing, provide more low Income Housing as well as the lead to a situation where the community would be gentrified. Earlier they brought that same message to google headquarters. What do we want . Housing. When do we want it . Now. Reporter they traveled from san jose to the doorstep of google in Mountain View demanding the tech giant deliver more low Income Housing and not drive poor people out when it comes to town. We want google to come to san jose, but we want them to come in a responsible way that is going to help the communities and not worsen the problems that we already have. Reporter google is planning to build a huge new Office Complex close to deardon station that could bring 20,000 tech workers to the downtown core. We are here to stay. Reporter as the group marched on to google Central Plaza to deliver a all right to googles a letter to googles ceo, they were met face to face with a company representative. This is about our livelihood and the future of san jose in the region and we need google and all Tech Development to really take some responsibility. Reporter googles javier gonzalez, a former city hall staffer, was polite but offered no promises. Appreciate it. Thank you very much for sharing your letter. We look forward to engaging with the community and hearing the concerns and all the issues that are outlined in this letter. Thank you very much for visiting us. Have a good afternoon. Reporter one former tech worker who is now homeless says google can make a difference. They certainly have enough money to do that if they wanted to. Its just a question of their will and i understand that they cant save every Community Across the country, but they could certainly start where they are. Reporter now one of the things that google is being asked is to provide 25 of any new housing that is created here in downtown san jose be for low income or very low income residents. Now that is a very big ask by this Community Group because the project that was just approved in Mountain View only provides for 20 of low Income Housing. So theyre asking for 5 more. Well see how that works out as this Community Engagement process gets underway. Reporting live in downtown san jose, len ramirez, kpix5. A live loo the other big story tonight, steady rain soaking much of the bay area. This is a live look now from highway 101 in corte madera. The storm is moving south but still making for a sloppy evening commute. Now lets give you a live look at the showers in San Francisco. Along the embarcadero near the ball park a steady rain has been falling across the city. This is what it looked like as our photographer drove through a downpour in the presidio today. Meteorologist paul deanno has been tracking hidef doppler for us. Kind of rare all of the steady or heavy rainfall is confined to a rather narrow location. It is all between San Francisco and san jose right now where the rain has ended in santa rosa, but here it is, the heart of the evening commute, the heart of the bay area, its pouring. San mateo, redwood city, fremont, hayward, oakland, union city, san ramon and livermore getting steady rainfall, but the clearing line is rather definitive. Its pouring in hercules or was minutes ago. The rain will be done in about 10 more minutes. Its finished raining in san rafael and novato. The south bay had some showers, your heavy rain likely beginning before 7 00 tonight as this front races south. Thankfully the snow will last in the sierra longer than the rain will last here. Winter storm warning with a pretty low snow level, 3,000 feet. Total snowfall is 1 to 2 feet widespread, isolated totals of up to 36 inches of new snowfall in some of the higher peaks, travel in the sierra very rough tonight but lots of fresh powder for skiers and snowboarders this weekend. Well talk about how long the showers after the front will stick around coming up in about 10 minutes. Thanks, paul. There are allegations tonight about some back room dealing in the selection of San Franciscos new interim mayor. Any truth to them . Heres what kpix5 Political Insider phil matier found out. Reporter here in San Francisco city hall, as you may well know, big votes generate big controversy and big rumors of back room deals. In the selection of mark ferrell as the new interim mayor, theres no exception. Lets take a look. The boards decision yesterday is something again i do not take lightly. I take it very humbly. Reporter but this is San Francisco where voting in a white male, mark ferrell, to replace a black woman, london breed, as the interim mayor is bound to set off a firestorm. I will support it. I dont agree with it, but i support their decision. Reporter breed supporters for mayor like Supervisor Malia Cohen said it was a straight political play aimed at slowing down breeds run in the june mayoral election. Supervisor ferrell kept his cards held close to the vest and was very elusive, averting eye contact, noncommittal, unavailable leading up until the time we went into the chamber. Reporter are you saying it was a back room deal . Absolutely. Reporter one of the supposed ring masters of the play is long time progressive supervisor aaron peskin who said breed being both board president and acting mayor was just too much power for one person in one place. The the vote that you saw last night was a vote about separation of powers, was a vote about having a free and Fair Election which San Francisco has not had for over a decade. Reporter and new mayor ferrell who is not running in the june election today appeared to agree, at least in part. To me that is too much power in one persons hands. There needs to be checks and balances. Reporter did you have a conversation with mark ferrell prior to the vote about the vote . I dont want to comment on that. Reporter as to the effect of all this on breeds campaign for mayor, how will this affect the Mayoral Campaign . Its yet to be determined. Reporter early polling showed london breed was right up there with senator mark leno leading the pack that included jane kim and former supervisor angela alioto. How this will affect it in the next couple months remains to be seen, but one thing is for certain, where theres controversy, theres attention and in politics attention is usually a good thing. When a High School Baseball player saw how few Little League players went on to play baseball in high school, he took action. This weeks jefferson awards winner inspired and nurtured these kids love of the game. How is it going, everybody . Thank for coming out. Im tyler monka. Tyler fell in love with americas pastime when he was 4. I could barely hold the bat and i remember going home and saying dad, i love baseball. I got to play. The senior at Bishop O Dowd in oakland decided three years ago to share his love of the game by starting greatest game baseball academy, a free three day clinic open for boys and girls 11 to 14. 92 of youth Baseball Players quit the game before high school. He believes a big reason many kids give up the game is because they cant afford to play on expensive club or travel teams, an option for some kids after aging out of Little League and before starting high school. Thats why his academy is free. They have the same love of the game as me. They have the same talent, but they couldnt play. The academy uses volunteer coaches and tylers High School Teammates to teach baseball schools to about 50 Young Players over the course of three sundays in january. Tylers the kind of kid that anybody will want to come out and do something for him. Nearly 150 Young Players have attended the academy so far. 12yearold gabriel mohawk didnt need much encouragement. He just called me. Its like the field is like my house. Its gabriels second year at the academy, same with kalen lovan. I learned some better ways to catch fly balls, grounders. As for what the academy is teaching tyler . Ive been given the gift of baseball and of these great friends and of travel teams and equipment and its shown me i cant take what ive had for granted. Lets have a lot of fun. So for helping young Baseball Players stay in the sport and nurturing their love of the game, this weeks jefferson award in the bay area goes to tyler monka. The academy does receive some donations from the giants, the as and west coast sports. Tyler tells me hes been accepted to michigan next year with a 4. 8 gpa. A younger teammate will take over the academy. You can nominate your local hero for a jefferson award online, www. Cbssf. Com hero. What an inspiration. The latest always on www. Cbssf. Com.
