How far does that backup stretch . Well find out. Good morning, everyone. Its tuesday, january 23rd. Im michelle griigo griego. Im kenny choi. We are continuing to keep an eye on the california coastline. A tsunami watch has been canceled after a powerful earthquake struck in the gulf of alaska. Lets go to anne makovec with the latest there. Anne . Reporter yeah. Thankfully, that watch has been canceled, because you never really know what to expect when it comes to a powerful earthquake off the coast. One of the first signs people have been watching for is water receding. And you can see here in pacificca, really the waves are looking pretty normal at this hour. So that is the good news. That earthquake hit just after midnight, alaska time, just after 1 00 a. M. Our time. It was an 8. 2 in the gulf. The usgs downgraded it then to a 7. 9. There have been at least seven aftershocks of a magnitude 4 pntd 2 or 4. 2 or higher. That is the creepy sound of a tsunami warning siren, going off in alaska, warning people of the danger. You can see the video of cars lining up to evacuate the town of kodiak. This was when it was a warning there. It is now an advisory. Hello, kodiak. Sergeant beaver here, just want to again remind everybody, this is not a drill. This is an actual tsunami warning. Everybody get at least 100 feet above sea level. Reporter again, it is now an advisory in alaska but it was once a tsunami watch here in the bay area. And heres the tweet sent out by the San Francisco department of emergency management, telling people who live within three blocks of the pacific coast, or five blocks of the bay, to prepare to evacuate. Now, that came in just after 1 00 a. M. So a lot of people were sleeping. Just waking up to the news this morning. So yeah, the good news, crisis averted. The biggest waves from this potential tsunami activity were supposed to come in at around 6 15. Well keep an eye on the waves and see if they look any more dramatic as the morning goes on. Live in pacifica, anne makovec. Channel 5 for alaska, that initial threat is now gone. But of course, sea levels still could rise. Because of course when theres an earthquake that big, 7. 9 is pretty big. It could impact the ocean regardless. So anne is keeping an eye on that. Let me show you where the earthquake happened just southeast of kodiak. That island there. And the advisory was lit up all along the island in the coast of alaska. But now, it is no longer. And what this is showing is the area of those aftershocks. Anything above a 5 in magnitude, over the past few hours is what that is showing. So theres been quite a few in that same area. Where the 7. 9 occurred. But again, this advisory in alaska is now no longer. So those people who were kind of trying to escape are going to be okay. But there is a chance that the sea level will continue to rise, just a little bit throughout the day, for the entire coastline because of the nature of these earthquakes and what it does to the ocean causes that Ripple Effect. So we may see some of those waves increase a little bit. Here in the next couple of hours, as the impact has reached the west coast. As far as our area is concerned. We do have patchy fog. It was covering coit tower. Now, not so much. Looks like it is clearing up a little bit. But were seeing patchy fog, especially in the lowlying areas. Clear in the afternoon. And ill track your next chance of rain coming up. Ned athank you. President trump is im neda, thank you. President trump is imposing a steep new tariff. Levees will look like levies will start at 30 and gradually go up. The president says he wants to protect the american industry. But of course, there are several factors at play here. Some are worried this will drive down the competition in the u. S. , which will then drive up the prices. Others say most Solar Companies inside the u. S. Dont actually focus on the panels themselves, but rather other parts of technology. So this hurt their bottom line if they have to import those panels. And some say this could boost them, making them the domestic leader in the industry. Of course, only time will tell. Now, there is the Solar Industry associations, they say theyre very disappointed in President Trumps decision. And they say this could cost america tens of thousands of jobs. Ill explain why they say that, coming up in our nation half hour. Live in fremont, sandra osborne, kpix 5. The federal government is back in business, after a brief shutdown. A bill was signed.
