The program that protects undocumented immigrants who came here as children is partially back up and running after a court order but political reporter melissa kane says theres definitely a fight ahead. Daca is actually alive and Homeland Security is now accepting renewal applications. Reporter one of several attorneys general who sued to get the daca program back up and running. As the judge held in this case, the president and his administration acted arbitrarily and capriciously. Reporter a federal judge ruled that the Administration Made a mistake of law when it decided to end the daca program. The president called the ruling an example of how unfair our court system is. The ruling says that people who have daca status must be able to renew that status. But specifically said this does not extend to new applicants. So right now, the department of Homeland Security is only accepting applications for renewal. This judges ruling is going to stay in place until the end of the case. Or until a higher court rules otherwise. But there is still an emergency around the corner. I for one will not vote for government funding until we get a deal on daca. After that, airbnb and rivals will not allow unregistered properties on their site or other services. Now we are discovering there are numerous complaints about the Affordable Rental Program as well. Kpix 5s susie on why available units are sitting vacant for months. If youre going to do Affordable Housing, you might as well do it right. Reporter dave osgood is president of the Tenants Association in this luxury high rise near the waterfront. 76 apartments are what is known as below market rate units. Part of the Affordable Housing program. While market rate apartments in the building get luxury upgrades, bmr units are neglected. Even though rents are going up. Not only that, there have been rumors. In the past, employees have been placed into the below market units. Reporter there is supposed to be a waiting list for the affordable units that are in high demand due to the housing crisis. Did the employees wait . That information is concealed. So we dont know how unfair it is. But theres certainly been plenty of stories about people jumping ahead. The renters are not the only ones complaining. Turns out bmr landlords are not happy either. Its a disservice to all parties. Reporter vanessa with the Apartment Association has heard of more than 100 bmr is available for rent but not occupied. The program was designed to get Affordable Housing to hard working people like teachers and firefighters. It was not to sit empty. Owners want these units filled. Reporter she blames red tape at city hall. It can take months to get somebody qualified. And then moved into. And some cases, we have owners who we represent who have had units vacant for six months. Reporter according to records, 291 bmr apartments were available for rent last year. 198 are now occupied. Thats only 68 . Even though more than 50,000 people applied. Are we perfect . No. But we have made Great Strides in recent years. Reporter kate hartley is director of housing. Sometimes it may seem like it takes much too long, but theres a lot of work that has to go into making sure that people are getting into the right units. And they are eligible for those units. There are problems that occur just as there are problems in the market rate and the private building stock.
