New at 6 00 the fight over the San Francisco water front goes to court and now San Francisco voters are getting support from of all places los angeles. Kpix5 political reporter melissa caen can walk us through the fight over fight and the dig at a well known San Francisco politician, too. Reporter were here at what will someday be the Mission Rock Development project. Now this is one of two projects approved by San Francisco voters ever since the rule went into effect requiring voter approval of any waterfront development. But mission rock is also ground zero in a longstanding legal case that today became a political case when it veered right into the governors race. People come from every neighborhood to enjoy San Franciscos waterfront. Reporter in june, 2014 supporters of proposition b promised local control of the waterfront. Yes on b, balance is the power of big developers. It gives voters a voice whether height limits should be raised on our public piers and seawall lots. Reporter opponents said it should not be left to voters. What does it really do . It takes away sensible planning and replaces it with a political free for all. Reporter in the end proposition b passed with 60 of thed very. Assemblyman david chiu was on the San Francisco board of supervisors at the time. All of us in San Francisco are all incredibly passionate about our water front and making sure that our waterfront reflects who we are as a city. Reporter but theres a problem. The waterfront is technically state land. So the state Lands Commission is suing to stop prop b and the trial started on wednesday, but chairman of the state Lands Commission who voted in favor of suing San Francisco is also a candidate for governor. Lieutenant governor gavin newsom. Today rival candidate for governor Antonio Villaraigosa released a statement calling on newsom to end the lawsuit. He wrote, the state Lands Commissions legal argument the people of San Francisco are too uneducated on ballot issues to make a decision about height limits is both elitist and condescending. I trust the voters of San Franciscos decision to protect their own waterfront. And the legal dispute is pivotal to being blundered by big Land Developers and polluters. Antonio villaraigosa has shown time and time even hes perfectly fine with developers. All you need to do is look at the projects of pier 70 and mission rock and because it was on court property, the projects had to be developed and designed to win voter approval and popular support. Reporter now according to the state of california, thats exactly the problem, that when Developers Like this try to appeal to voters by including more Affordable Housing or lowering their height, that those Development Projects become less lucrative. That means less money for the state in the form of fees and taxes. So its actually being litigated now as to whether the appeal to voters subjugate needs and interest of the state. The trial started this week. It will saturday again tuesday of next week, but as to political case, that will probably continue till election day. Live in San Francisco, melissa caen, kpix5.
