I dont know, he called me a great man last night, so he obviously changed his tune pretty quick. Reporter bannon spoke fondly of the president the night before but the firestorm around the book waged on. Completely tabloid, full of false and fraudulent claims. Reporter the president s lawyer demanded that the books publisher henry holt cease and desist from any publication or face a lawsuit. The publisher moved the date from next tuesday to today, citing unprecedented demand. The book details dysfunction among the white house staff and also raises questions about the president s mental state. Author Michael Wolff write, the staff became concerned that trumps rambling and his alarming repetitions had significantly increased and that his ability to stay focused, never great, had notably declined. Janice min of the Hollywood Reporter recalls a candid dinner that she says was reported accurately in the book. One of the things that was just mind blowing to me was both the level of trust they had in Michael Wolff, that they were saying all this in front of two people who had the ability to put this out in the world. This morn, wolff refuted the white house, saying he absolutely spoke to the president. The president reportedly told his Top White House lawyer to stop attorney general Jeff Sessions from withdrawing from the russia investigation. Overnight, responding to report, that also alleges sessions sent an aide to capitol hill to dig up dirt on then fbi director james comey. Four days before fbi director james comey was abruptly fired by the president last may, according to the New York Times, one of mr. Sessions aides asked a Congressional Staff member whether he had damaging information about mr. Comey, which was part of an apparent effort to undermine the fbi director. A doj spokeswoman told cbs news this did not happen and would not happen, plain and simple. The times also writes that when the white House Counsel failed to stop sessions from recusing himself, the president erupted in anger, saying he needed his attorney general to protect him. The newly released book fire and fury also includes a meeting aboard air force one in july that could represent obstruction of justice. According to author Michael Wolff, the president , hope hicks, Jared Kushner and ivanka trump huddled over how to respond to reports about the trump tower meeting involving donald trump jr. Stocks are trading higher after the december employment report this morning showed the economy added 148,000 jobs last month. The employment rate remained unchanged at 4. 1 . Cbs news financial contributor Mellody Hobson is in chicago. What a start to the new year. Whats fueling this growth . Wow, thats all i can say, its quite a start. Weve broken through lots and lots of records last year. Started this year off strong. And a lot of it has to do with the fact that corporate profits have been strong. Should only get better because of the recent tax cut that congress has delivered to them. Unemployment is really low. The economy, not just in america, but around the world, is really strong. And not to mention the fact that some of these deregulation efforts will push a lot of industries to have make it easier for them to do business. So theres a lot conspiring to push the stock market up. Yet im looking at the front page of the wall street journal and they point out though despite this surge small investors have continued to yank their money out of funds that own u. S. Stocks. Why . Because their are suffering from what i call post Traumatic Stress disorder from the financial crisis. Small investors are mostly sat on the sidelines because the financial crisis really scared them. And so as a result of that, they have missed a lot of this run in terms of direct ownership of stocks. But they indirectly own stock through their retirement accounts like their 401k plans and pensions that theyve had so a lot of workers have still benefitted. Mellody what about average americans who dont own stocks and look for increases in things like wages . Those have only risen less than 3 in the last year. How do you explain that discrepan discrepancy . Wage growth has been very slow, very low and this is something thats confounded a lot of economists. A lot of it has to do with the fact that, again, coming out of the financial crisis, unemployment surged and people literally gave up looking for a job. They said im done. As the economy started to come back, these people are entering the workforce. Theyre willing to work for less. But now we have 18 states that have raised unemployment as of the first of this year. We have 13 states that have 40year lows in unemployment. So in order to hire people, theyre going to have to pay them more. So i expect wage growth to really start to happen. Ive been saying that for a while. But i really do think this is it. Could also be a correction on the horizon somewhere down the line. No one knows. I mean this is the thing. I love the saying that bull markets do not die of old age. That is not what happens. Its something else. Everyones pointing to the fact that this is the second longest bull market in stock market history. And if we go another ten months, it will be the longest. But who knows. I would not time the market here. Mellody hobson, thanks for that. Investors are backing away from marijuanarelated stocks. Millions of americans are waking up to dangerous cold air after a monster winter storm blasted the east coast. A nasa satellite captured the massive scale of the system. It covered nearly the entire eastern seaboard. The storm brought up to a footandahalf of snow to parts of the east coast. He is vee flooding slammed boston and coastal new england. At least 19 people have died from winter weather. This morning the temperature is below freezing in 85 of the country. The low is negative 18 in grand forks, north dakota. Temperatures will go even lower in the north korea east tomorrow. Don dahler is in boston where it is expected to drop to one degree below tomorrow. Good morning, don. Reporter good morning. Boston was not only slammed with 13 inches of snow but they had considerable flooding here as well. In fact, it was the worst coastal flooding in this area since 1978. One of the reasons why it was so catastrophic was because the storm hit during high tide as well as a super moon, which meant the tide was higher than normal. There were waves out on the coast that were picking up chunks of ice and throwing them like projectiles. The National Guard performed several waltter rescues. One family was rescued from their home using a bucket loader. The storm dumped up to 18 inches in parts of new england making it tough for plows to keep up. New york city got about 15 inches and put plows on the road and couldnt keep up. The heavy snow stretched into the south creating difficult conditions up and down the coast. As you said, it is not expected to get above freezing here in the boston area until perhaps monday if not later, which means that those icy roads are going to make for dangerous driving. Jeff. Thank you very much. A controversial new book about President Trumps first year in office is on sale this morning, four days early, despite a threat to halt its publication. Fire and fury is a sprawling account of political infighting inside the west wing of the white house. The book was published early after the president s legal team sent cease and desist letters to author Michael Wolff, the publisher and former white house chief strategist steve bannon. The president blamed wolff and bannon saying i authorized zero access to the white house for the author of a phoney book. Look at this guys past and what happens to him and sloppy steve. Chip is at the white house with a copy of the book. Good morning. Reporter good morning. One of the main themes in the book is the chaotic environment at the white house as staffers fought for the president s attention. The book makes clear, and as cbs news has consistently reported, the fiercest battle was between steve bannon on one side and ivanka trump, the president s daughter and her husband Jared Kushner on the other. According to the book, bannon offered trump a plan to fire those two and other staffers. He said, quote, you send those two kids home. You get rid of hope hicks, all of the dead beats and listen to your legal team. The president did not do that and chaos ensued as advisers desperately tried to influence the president and as competing policies were advanced and then scrapped. Bannon acknowledges that the president has ignored much of his advice, saying, you cant stop him, the guy is going to call his own plays, hes trump. Now, the white house insists that this book is full of falsehoods, but they say theyre not going to waste their time going through every one of them publicly one by one. But that is not keeping the president from raging about this book on twitter. Never a dull moment. Thanks, chip. Reporter you bet. Usa today Washington Bureau chief susan page joins us now. Good morning, susan. Good morning. Theres a serious back and forth between the white house, the publisher and author Michael Wolff. Michael wolff is standing by his reporting. This morning he said the president has lost it. Who has the upper hand here, susan . Well, i think that you know that storm coverage you just showed on the east coast . That is nothing compared to what is going on inside the white house in response to this book because this book is a Serious Development for the white house. It has all of these gossipy details but more seriously theres evidence and reports in the book that go to the russia investigation, it could have legal repercussions, and theres also, as chip was saying, the portrait of a president and a white house that is really quite dysfunctional. So you would say the white house is on defense at this moment . Yes, i think the white house is on defense. One of the things that is, i think, alarming for the white house is that this there have been negative stories about how the president s functioning has been impulsive, reckless and ininformed uninformed from the dems and its been a consistent theme. We have on the record quotes from the president s most senior and trusted advisers as to how the white house works and doesnt work. There has been said that the comments were said off the record. He said this is a version i believe to be true. Is that problematic in any way . It is. We dont know everything reported in the book is true, but i think it is notable theres been push back as to whether things were off the record, not to whether they were said. Theres push backs to attacks on Michael Wolff and on steve bannon, but they dont go to the substance or the content of the book. Theres been less pushback on that and that is in washington what we might call kind of a form of confirmation. I want to talk about some of the more serious charges that are outlined in the New York Times today, the deal with investigation by the special Counsel Robert Mueller. The New York Times has some incredible detailing in this reporting and i want to read to you and i know you have read the report, Michael Schmitt in the New York Times, that the special counsel has received handwritten notes from mr. Trumps former chief of staff Reince Priebus showing mr. Trump caulked to mr. Priebus about how he called mr. Comey to urge him to say publicly he was not under investigation. And then the New York Times reporting that even some of President Trumps own white house lawyers took the extraordinary step of misleading mr. Trump about whether he had the authority to remove him. His own lawyers. You know, whats a lesson from the watergate investigation, from the white water investigation and more . It is often that the big problems arise for a white house not from a crime but from a coverup. This New York Times report goes straight to that point about whether there were efforts by the president and the white house to obstruct the fbi investigation, and theres also evidence in this reporting this morning that reinforces the arguments, the allegations that james comey made, the fired fbi director, that the white house and the president have denied and called lies. All right. Susan page, thank you. Thank you. President trumps former press Secretary Sean Spicer admits he has made some mistakes, discussing his time with the white house with hln last night, including his claim the largest crowd ever witnessed the president s inauguration. He said that was not the only time he lost credibility. There were times where i screwed up. Theres no question about it. Give me one. I mean the inauguration. You brought it up. I would say thats first and foremost. Theres an event where i was trying to talk about how evil assad was. Right. And i screwed that up royally. You brought up hitler. Thank you for reminding me. Spicer said he tried to do the best job for the administration and the American People each day. Americans top resolutions for 2018 may not be a huge surprise. 37 want to eat healthier and get more exercise. 24 plan to take better care of themselves. For many that means an annual physical. The average doctors visit lasts 22 minutes. Our doctor is here with a checklist to make sure your exam time is used wisely. Doc, good morning. Good morning. Happy new year. Happy new year to you. What should we be doing in this visit to the doctor to make it more worth while . 22 minutes goes very quickly so you want to be empowered. That means coming armed with information. So first you want to bring your medications, bring the bottles, bring pictures of the bottles so the doctor knows the dosage and frequency. Talk to your family before your visit. Ask, did your aunt fran have a thyroid problem, does your mother have high Blood Pressure. Thats very important. You also want copy also of all of your records. I cant tell you how many people have no idea what their chest xray showed a year ago or their stress test. That information is very useful. Keep the copies and bring it to your visit. You want to keep a diary of your symptoms, when did they start, what do they feel like. All will be helpful. Last but not least you may want to bring a friend or Family Member who can take notes or listen because lots of times when youre in the office the information goes in one ear and out the other. Youre overwhelm. Having someone that can corroborate symptoms and keep notes is useful. It is not easy to transfer the records back and forth and track them down, right . It is not. But you can ask for copies, that is your right and you should ask for a copy of your rods and have it with you. Is it useful to get Lab Tests Done before you to go the checkup . Sometimes. If you are a patient who has been with a doctor for a while and you know every year they order these tests or youre followed for a condition like your thyroid or blood sugar, getting it before could be helpful because you can sit with the doctor and go over the results when you see them. However, if you are a new patient the doctor may want to order specific tests particular to whatever condition theyre looking at you for and then you would get stuck twice essentially. It may make sense to wait in that case. What are some of the questions you should ask . You want to ask about screening, about vaccination, prevention, your cardiovascular risk. You want to ask how the Doctors Office functions, how they will follow up, how often you should be seen. I think with the first visit the most important thing is establishing a connection. It is like a marriage. It is a very important personal relationship. Youre emotionally vulnerable, you are physically vulnerable. You want to know is it someone who is going to listen to me, who communicates in a way that i understand and who responds to my concerns in a way thats appropriate. What is the latest thinking and what is your thinking on the annual checkups and how often you should see your doctor . There are pros and cons. Theres evidence that really says it doesnt decrease death or illness, it can waste time and money, it can lead to overdiagnosis and treatment. On the other hand, it establishes that very important doctor patient relationship, that trust. Time is valuable. So when you see someone year to year you can tell, you know what, they dont seem the same. Maybe theres underlying depression going on. That mole i saw last year is a little different this year. Thats valuable. It can also give you time to go over prevention and screening which is important. I think the prevention is good too because they always take your cholesterol, your Blood Pressure. Right. And certainly if youre getting older and your Blood Pressure goes up and cholesterol goes up you can treat it early. And dont worry about asking for second opinions. People lots of times feel uncomfortable about that. The bottom line is this is your health, you need to be in charge, and the doctor should not get offended if you ask for a second opinion. What is more disappointing than getting a great new sweater or shirt only to try it on and find out it is the wrong size . Luckily, there are all sorts of fashion categories in place to prevent that, big tall, petite, plus size. For millions of men of a certain size, theres a category only just now getting the attention it deserves. If youre tall, dark and handsome, she never gets around vital statistics. Theres a certain kind of man. Youre the type of tall, you walk through the airport, people stop what theyre eating and look at you. Who people think gets all of the attention. Hes so tall and handsome pop culture always favored the tall guy, and that leaves a lot of men out.
