I was in oakland and i was jolted out of bed feeling that quake. It felt like a big rig was coming underneath my home. But experts say todays earthquake could tell a lot about what the future holds because it was pretty widespread 7 miles deep. Somalo earthquakes tend not to be felt over such a wide area. One of the interesting aspects in a preliminary sense that this earthquake that happened this morning is that it appears to be pretty deep. And those deeper earthquakes are felt over a wider area. Reporter and this is again a reminder that we live in earthquake country, to be prepared, have any supplies that you need ready to go by your door but if the earthquake hits you want to stop and cover your head put a pillow over your head if you need to. Dont run outside because there could be some downed power lines and you dont want to call 911 for this specific earthquake because if there wasnt any damage or injuries, its not an emergency. Reporter the president splitting with steve bannon one of his closest political allies claiming steve bannon has nothing to do with me or my presidency when he was fired he not only lost his job, he lost his mind. Until now, bannon had continued to be a vocal supporter of the Trump Administration following his white house exit this summer. But in a series of interviews with author Michael Wolff including some at the white house, bannon mocked the president and his family and accused donald trump, jr. , of treason for his june 2015 meeting with a russian lawyer who offered incriminating information on hillary clinton. Bannon said, quote, even if you thought that this was not treasonous or unpatriotic, and i happen to think its all of that you should have called the fbi immediately. He then speculated that trump, jr. , had also involved his father in the meeting a claim the White House Press secretary Sarah Sanders denied. I think, um, furious, disgusted would probably certainly fit. When you make such outrageous claims and completely false claims against the president , his administration and his family. Reporter sanders pointed out that bannon contradicted his characterization of the russian probe to 60 minutes in september. Theres nothing to the russia investigation. Its a waste of time. The eastshore freeway ride we are still seeing speeds in the green as you make your way westbound on over towards the bay bridge toll plaza. A little under 20 minutes. As you head to the toll plaza, take a look at that. Wide open space and we still are not seeing any metering lights. We are starting to see a backup and this is on that ramp from 880 all those heading into the fastrak lanes but overall, were still moving right at the limit across the span. 580 the usual slowdowns at the Altamont Pass and reports of an accident right at that connector ramp to 680 there. Not seeing any significant backup just yet. Speeds dipping just below the limit around 55 Miles Per Hour. Your travel time in the yellow, 27 minutes between 205 and 680. And we are waiting for this next low pressure system to come through. It will be coming from the north and its going to reach the north bay late tonight. So by the time youre sleeping tonight, thats when most of the action will be occurring. Heres the futurecast. Most of the day today, some clouds to the north and some sunshine even for the south bay and here we are at midnight. Thats when santa rosa maze the beginnings of this storm and then 6 00 tomorrow morning, maybe a little bit more widespread. Santa cruz also should be impacted by it and fairfield, as well. But it wont be too significant. The big storm that we are watching is occurring next week. So tuesday, wednesday of next week, that one should bring us heavier rainfall. Over to you. A magnitude 4. 4 earthquake shook the bay area overnight. Im michelle griego. Good morning. Im kenny choi. It is thursday, january 4th. We have live team coverage. The earthquake struck around 2 30 this morning centering just a couple miles southeast of berkeley near the Claremont Hotel and thats where we find anne makovec this morning with the very latest near that Oakland Berkeley border. Reporter a moderate quake, not very strong, 4. 4, but enough to scare people. Not big enough to do any damage. The epicenter is right at the Claremont Hotel a lot of people know that in berkeley. Im about a half mile away from there at a Shopping Center where this mornings earthquakes is certainly the talk of the turn to. Everybody has a story. Most people jolted out of bed this morning as i was in San Francisco. Feeling like the building was shaking. We talked with one man who is a nurse. He was working in the icu at a nearby kaiser hospital. Heres his story. The patients that were on ventilators and intubators woke up because it was such a big jolt from the earthquake. So you know, being in california would you like to think you are used to it but when it hits, its still scary. He said he could see a lot of the patients Blood Pressure physically going up at that moment. Now, youre taking a live look at a coffee shop. They opened a couple of hours ago and we saw the workers coming in this morning. Checking for damage, looking at the walls, looking at the ceiling. Nothing was knocked over. Theres a Safeway Store behind me, as well. They reported a few boxes falling off the shelves. But nothing serious. The main thing for a lot of us is just a scary jolt from your bed this morning. We spoke with one man who lives around here who was wondering the question a lot of us were at that point. I just felt the house shaken could hear it shaking a little bit. Where the first one you wonder is this the big one . I would say around three seconds is all but it was a good little jolt. Reporter and it was felt many miles away as far as santa cruz and around the bay area. So if you havent checked social yet you will find a lot of posts on that on twitter and facebook. But again, we are happy to report no reports of damage or injuries. Live on the Oakland Berkeley border anne makevoc, kpix 5. Thats one of the first things people do in an earthquake is check for damage. Thank you so much. Jessica flores is live at usgs in menlo park this morning. What are Officials Saying about the quake that struck . Reporter good morning, kenny. Well, right behind me is the Deputy Director here at usgs. He is going to give a breakdown about what happened. We do know that it was initially 4. 7 earthquake downgraded to 4. 4 centered in berkeley about 7 to 8 miles deep felt throughout the bay area to concord, san jose, i felt it in oakland. It jolted me out of bed. It felt like a big rig was going underneath my home. Well turn to Keith Knudsen who will talk to us about this earthquake. Good morning, everyone. Its an earlymorning. I hope you all didnt get up to shaking like i did. This morning at about 2 30 there was a magnitude 4. 4 earthquake just south of the university of california berkeley on the hayward fault most likely. Um, probably hundreds of thousands of residents of the bay area felt it. It was about 8 miles deep, 12 kilometers deep. And the hayward fault is not unusual to host earthquakes like this. In fact, there have been about 3 or 4 earthquakes of this size in the past 10 years in this area. So this is an area that commonly produces these earthquakes about this magnitude on the hayward fault and this is a reminder that we live in earthquake country. It sounds like not much damage has been done. Thats great. But its a wakeup call literally and figuratively for all of us. [ laughter ] it reminds us to be prepared. What about the possibility that this is a foreshock . What are the odds of that . Thats a great question. So, um, looking historically at all the earthquakes that happen in california, about 5 of the time earthquakes are followed by larger earthquakes so theres a low probability but there is some probability that this is a foreshock to a bigger event. It wouldnt be a surprise if we had a bigger earthquake on the hayward fault. The last one occurred in 1868. We are at about the 150year anniversary for the last big earthquake on the hayward fault so we know from geologic expeditions that big earthquakes on this fault happen every 150 years so people like me, geologists and seismologists, think a large earthquake on the hayward fault is probably the most likely earthquake to occur in the bay area in the near future. Can you speak of the depth of the earthquake . Was it widespread . A lot of people felt it . Yeah. This earthquake right now we think that it occurred at about 8 miles or 12 or 13 kilometers deep which is relatively deep for earthquakes on the hayward fault. The fact that it was so deep means it was felt over a wide area. Shallower earthquakes are felt over smaller areas. Deepers earthquakes, the earthquake energy radiates to a much broader region. Deeper earthquakes the earthquake energy radiates to a much broader region. So its usual. The aftershocks will illuminate or highlight what part of the fault ruptured during the earthquake. And the first aftershock we have seen also has been deep so its interesting, it contributes to the widely felt nature of the earthquake. Other than that not a lot to say about the depth. Can you tell us more about that aftershock . Not a whole lot. All i know is theres been one aftershock in the area since and thats shown on this map here. I imagine in the coming days well see more. Hopefully not large ones damaging earthquakes. But the small earthquakes they help us as scientists understand what happened in that main shock, the 4. 4 event. A lot of people said it felt bigger than 4. 7 and saying that, you know, comparable maybe to the napa quake except shorter. Why would they have that type of feeling . And is it just inexperience with earthquakes . Im not sure. I woke up in albany to this earthquake. And i have a little bit of history. I lived in the bay area for almost 25 years. The things that i think about how long did the shaking go on, whats the duration of shaking, how intense was it. And then you have to think about the types of materials youre on, the soils youre on, the soft soils around the bay margin tend to amplify shaking but our early indications are the shaking, um, might actually have been a little bit low for an earthquake of this magnitude so i dont think those if people are telling you they felt it was intense shaking, given the magnitude, i dont know that theyre right. But its a little early to make conclusions about that. We have a photographer right here who felt it in danvers. Wow. Its remarkable considering that it was the hayward fault and reaching all the way danvers. An hour after the event which happened in the middle of the night, there were tens of thousands of people who had already contacted our did you feel it page and i encourage everyone to go in and do that. That information really helps us understand the distribution of shaking around the bay area. The shaking was widespread. Thats not unexpected for an earthquake of this magnitude. Can you tell us are we ready for something bigger than this . Well, let me turn that around. Are you ready . [ laughter ] i would say were doing better than we used to do. Theres still lots to be done. And the one piece of advice i offer people is to think about the buildings in which you spend time. The school your children go to, your office, your home, are those buildings going to withstand strong shaking . Most people the answer is i dont know. Then i suggest you consult an expert. It is the older vulnerable infrastructure that tends to do damage in earthquakes. Was this [ indiscernible ] as far as you know . As far as we know, it looks like it was on the hayward fault. The epicenter plots right on the hayward fault. The type of slips that occurred during the earthquake is the type of slip that one would expect in a hayward fault earthquake. So, um, again, this is not unusual. We have these types of events on the hayward fault. I like to think of this as a stuck patch. The hayward fault some of may i know is slowly creeping as time goes on, its slowly creeps and the two sides of the fault move past each other without much in the way of earthquakes but there are patches where, um, the creep is inhibited either the rocks are rough or they are tightly clamped there and every once in a while those stuck patches slip and that produces an earthquake and it produces a smaller earthquake. And it tells us that the hayward fault is indeed moving and has the potential to produce large earthquakes. Can you tell us what the usgs does now when you study a particular earthquake and what it could mean for the future . We do a lot of things. We monitor earthquakes. We do research into how earthquakes occur, why they occur in certain sizes and we do hazard assessments. We put out information about future likely shaking and those hazards assessments are consulted by the building code. So New Buildings are built according to information that we help develop with our partners. For this particular earthquake, we had hundreds of seismic instruments in the ground mainly. We also monitoring how some structures behave and they sense this earthquake and those monitoring instruments are what allow us to tell you about the history of earthquakes here in the bay area. In terms of [ crosstalk ] warning instruments to tell us ahead of time reporter the that was the Deputy Director of the usgs here in the San Francisco bay area. He broke it down for us basically the 4. 4 earthquake could signal whats to come. They havent had a major earthquake along the hayward fault line in 150 years and its about time for that major earthquake to happen. It happens every 140 years. Back to you in the studio. Jessica, thank you. To add to her point, the hayward fault commonly produces earthquakes of this magnitude. Yeah. He was pointing out the way its been creeping so its been moving a few mill meet year. Its a slip strike fault that goes parallel to each other parallel to the san andreas fault. I have an image of where this is. The biggest quake that happened there in berkeley was 1868, 6. 8 magnitude. Look at the extent of the hayward fault all the way through berkeley through oakland all the way towards fremont. So it goes across the east bay hills, highly populated areas. It is always good to be prepared all across california. I remember as a kid my mother what give us a gallon of water and corn flakes to keep under our desk in our rooms just in case. Its always good to have food and water ready because you never know. 2. 4million People Living along the hayward fault. It happened across the street from the Claremont Hotel eight miles deep which is why so many people felt it. Lets talk about your weather right now. Hidef doppler showing a little more green on the screen. San anselmo a little rain and San Francisco may get a light drizzle. Nothing that should disrupt your day or your morning commute. Rohnert park now seeing a few areas of some scattered showers. Very light. Visibility though may affect your commute this morning especially if you are going through livermore. Look how far its dropped to. 3 miles. 1. 3mile visibility for concord. Visibility also impacted across oakland and hayward because of the patchy fog. Santa rosa now to less than 1 mile because of patchy fog. North bay hills, valley areas certainly seeing that fog occurring, also watching it come and go across the Golden Gate Bridge this morning. 55 degrees there in San Francisco. 53 for concord. Oakland 53 degrees in livermore 47 degrees. I have another storm to talk about. Well track that coming up. Sounds good. Thank you it. And expect delays heading through hayward right now. We are seeing delays along southbound 880 as well as 92. We do have an accident westbound 92 right as you approach the toll plaza there. Two lanes remain blocked and that has traffic backed up to 880 at this point. So we are seeing a very slow ride until you get past the toll plaza. And then things start to pick up across the span but youre looking at about a little over 35 minutes heading across the san mateo bridge from 880. So do give yourself an extra 20, 25 minutes or so out the door if thats part of your commute. We had an earlier problem along southbound 13 on the connector ramp to eastbound 24. It looks like thats cleared to the shoulder. Usual slowdowns heading towards the caldecott tunnel. We are looking at about 13 minutes from 680. Hats a check of your traffic; over to you.
