Cramming marijuana in for the expected rush and expecting sales to jump by about 30 . Tonight were revisiting some of the investigations that exposed hidden dangers for bay area consumers, changed the Way Companies do business and even helped change laws. Julie watts is here. Reporter tonight taking a look back at some of our most memorable consumer watch stories of the year. First up, a social media experiment. We invited you our viewers to join us via Facebook Live while we researched a story a year in the making. We encouraged you to participate and help shape our coverage in a big way. Flame retardant car seat. It is not a typical news story. A collaboration between viewers, part oldfashioned journalism and how you the viewers helped drive a yearlong investigation and how passionate consumers prompted change. When alpha baby announced the first car seat without added flame retardants some on social media were a little skeptical. I really hope this is true but is it legal for them to sell a flame retardant free car seat . Manufacturers have added they have to add them to pass the flammability tests. So we invited viewers to participate in our interview with the companys founder via Facebook Live and join us behind the scenes of our latest investigation as we lit the first flameretardantfree car seat on fire. As you can see itself extinguished. Thats not a requirement. Our audience on air and on line has been a crucial part of the investigation. The test results sent in from parents across the country, along with independent lab tests of our own, we discovered that even the greenest car seat manufacturers couldnt keep known cancer causing retardants out of their car seat. Theres a mom claiming to be a chemist saying kids would literally have to eat the entire car seat for toxins to get in their system. An apparent link revealed between a chemical in a car seat and in her body. There was one in the environment, her car seat. Is there anything we the people can do . Reporter parents wanted and needed to know more. We turned our attention to the federal flammability car seat standards. They say they cant pass the required tests without adding retardants. When we commissioned a test, a homemade cover without retardants not meeting the standards performs as well if not better than the other. Many were claiming they couldnt buy it without a retardant. Angry with everybody. And explaining to our viewers, it challenged him to do something never done. Make a retardant free car seat. He said they spent a year developing new fabric specially woefshen to resist flames. But considering the history of misleading claims by some car seat manufacturers, some parents needed evidence. I would like to see the tests done on the new seat before purchasing. The only model without retardant went to independent researchers at duke. Neither found flame retardants. Then we ignited the new car seat cover live on facebook to demonstrate how its car seat can pass the test without retardants while others cannot. The current test requires that you individually ignite every single component so you have to light the fabric by itself and the foam by itself. Manufacturers say the foam used in car seats cannot pass the test without retardants but instead of adding retardants to the foam like many other manufacturers this is now one component. They laminated its naturally Flame Resistant fabric to the outside of the foam. The requirements are not to meet the standards. The federal test requires a small flame be applied to the outside of each material so in this case, it applied to the naturally Flame Resistant fabric rather than the foam, passing the test. Sounds great. How expensive . It will cost about 350, a 50 premium. They stress regulatory changes are needed to create an affordable flame retardant free option for every child. Thank you for answering my questions and for doing this. Reporter if youre concerned about the retardants in your current car seat, experts suggest vacuuming it often, washing your childs hands and dont use the car seat outside of the car. But remember car seats are critical to keeping kids safe in the car and they are required by law. Now, since our story first aired, two other manufacturers have announced their own flameretardantfree car seat models and the consumer Fire Safety Commission issued the First Official federal Health Warning regarding flame retardants. The city of San Francisco also recently passed the nations law banning the sale in the city containing flame retardants. Well be right back. Welcome back. Were taking a look back at some of our most memorable consumer watch stories of the year. Up next a story that really had pet parents talking online. There are plenty of regulations intended to keep human food safe, but what about pet foods . Many were shocked to hear what lab tests found in year in a variety of bestselling pet foods. We thought we were going to lose her. Some deaths were blamed on dog treats and food, too. Theyre among the thousands of pets with illnesses or deaths linked to pet foods and many many cases they dont know what in the food made pets sick. The f. D. A. Has received over 9,000 complaints ranging from diarrhea to death. Now lab tests commissioned by the clean label project are shedding light on what they say are in the food. Jackie bowen says they worked with analytics to test 900 of the bestselling food and treats for toxins. Led, mercury,ar senic. The reality is that most of the foods that are out there just have to comply with basic fda requirements and they havent been researched. Animals can be more tolerant to many things than humans, however you should listen to the levels because lead is a silent killer. Pets should not drink water if the lead levels exceed the levels here. Other products from the same company had no lead at all. Contaminants vary because of different ingredients. And regulating pet food safety does not monitor human grade. It should meet human grade standards. Three times the fda guidance for lead in certain human food. And this brand had a product with 15 times the epas mercury limits for drinking water. So this may also be found in human food and each brand also had products with much better results. So exactly how much is too much lead, mercury and the like for your pet . No set limits. The clean label project used the epa Safe Drinking Water act for guidance. We had to rely on something. Reporter in response the fda said relying on the acceptable level for humans is not a sound approach for levels in dogs and cats, noting the size difference, and that humans drink for water. If we cant compare human food to pet food, there needs to be regulations. The fda reports 15 pet food recalls so far this year, none related to this report, but the epa says any level of those substances must be safe for the animal. While some Companies Say they dont test for these because there are no set limits, pet nutrition says they test their products and stand behind them, though it did not provide test results to dispute the labs finding. The pet food industrys says the methods were not publicly released saying it is impossible to assess the credibility of recent claims made. However the industry says it did not request that information. Analytics shared data with us and we shared a sub set with the companies we contacted. They are calling for more disclosure and limits on these contaminants, something pet parents want to see. They should watch it. The point of testing was to encourage the pet food manufacturers to test for contaminants even though not required. Interestingly, they said they found the fewest contaminants in products where chicken and turkey were the primary components. Well be right back. Welcome back. Were taking a look back tonight at some of our most memorable consumer watch stories of the year. Now to holding big business accountable and looking out for the little guy. Many of our investigations begin when viewers like you contact us for help. Like in the case of the safe deposit shocker. This year we heard from several viewers who were blind sided when their banks drilled their safe deposit boxes in some cases losing tens of thousands worth of valuables. When they couldnt get help from their bank, they turned to us. Its not replaceable. Family heirlooms, jewelry she wore on her wedding day gone forever after they say bank of america drilled their safe deposit box without any warning. This goes with the missing jewelry. They just took it. A single tank is all thats left after they shipped the contents to a Holding Center on the east coast. All my jewelry, my treasures. The couple asked me not reveal their real names for security but say when the bank eventually shipped some of their stuff back, 17,000 worth of jewelry was still missing and what they did get back this stuff in here took us over one hour to untangle. Several delicate pieces left damaged or broken. Everything was stuffed in this plastic bag. And a strikingly similar experience. Her box was drilled without notice, her mothers jewelry shipped back via u. P. S. , in disarray. And losing more than jewelry when their box was emptied without notice. They lost an original deed to original property in china. They may lose the property. The bank says they may drill a box without warning for many reasons, however those reasons didnt apply to any of the people who came to us. They claim one of the signers information was missing. They claim my Social Security is not there. They said that they were missing the date of birth and address of one of the corenters of the box. Reporter all information the bank is required toe to get before opening an account. They said they sent letters requesting the missing information. There is no record of registered or certified mail. I asked them to produce the letter. They never did. The bank later provided copies of two of those letters allegedly sent in 2015. The boxes were drilled 10 to 15 months later. I went there every few months. They never informed me. And all three customers said they had other accounts the bank could have crossreferenced. I currently have 17 different litigations ive been hired as an Expert Witness on. He says they should have been notified in person of the missing information. Federal regulations are clear. Banks must provide customers with adequate notice. Notification should be made by registeredler or certified return receipt letter. Which was not done. They said they notify customers prior to drilling the box and have protocols when the customer comes in to access their box. That didnt happen in these cases. Most people dont real yiesz safe deposit boxes are not insured unless you purchase a separate policy and the banks liability is limit under the rental agreement. The safety deposit insurance cooperation employee says over the past three years approximately 50,000 boxes and 1. 3 billion worth of property have been impacted and things like theft, fire, floods, and other natural sdaft sters, however we have no way to track how much has been drilled and how much property was taken by banks. Banks are not required to report that to regulators and insurance policies dont cover items lost when the bank drills your box. After we got involved, the bank agreed to reimburse for the jewelry and pay to repay mrs. Woo. But as it turns out, in at least two of these cases missing information wasnt mittsing at all. They had all of that information. Their date of birth is there. Everything. 17,000 worth of jewelry and a property in china gone due to missing information the bank had all along. I just got this from the bank. They just took my stuff. I got robbed. The agency admits it generally doesnt take enforcement action on behalf of consumers. Short of calling a lawyer or consumer watch, experts say safe deposit customers have little recourse. And remember, if you have a consumer problem, you can contact us for help.
