Once you pass the wreck though, north 101 is clear all the way into the city. A man suspected of plotting a terror attack in the bay area is due in court today. Investigators say that Everitt Jameson was planning an isis inspired attack on the embarcadero on Christmas Day. But his wouldbe partner was an undercover fbi agent. A detention hearing is scheduled today for Everitt Jameson, a tow truck driver from the central valley. This weekend Law Enforcement in San Francisco will ensure a safe holiday celebration. So San Francisco police are not taking any chances. And they plan to have extra officers on patrol. For the first time the city is asking revelers to sign up for emergency text alerts that are specifically related to new years eve. City Emergency Managers say they want to have a way to reach people if needed. Currently theres no credible threat to San Francisco. However, Public Safety is our number one priority. We are working with local, state and federal agencies to make sure were in constant communication. That happened thursday last week at lolas market on dutton avenue. Police say a man got up from a table and stabbed a man in the neck and then ran off. Investigators say orozco and the victim didnt know each other and didnt speak to each other before the attack. The victim was seriously injured. Police say his condition has since been upgraded to stable. Investigators say the suspect went by numerous aliases. He had been living in santa rosa for the last two months. The motive unknown. From High School Students to gun owners to the transgender community, californians can expect big changes in the new year. Laurie perez breaks down the new laws about to take effect. Reporter transagenda people are celebrating what some call a practical and principled victory. Under senate bill 179, transgender people dont need to prove they have had clinical treatment before applying to the state to change their gender on their birth certificates. It also adds a nonbinary option so starting in2019 people who think they are not either a man or woman dont have to choose on the drivers license. It allows people to live and have government documents, um, to represent them in an authentic way. Reporter at burbank, this person says they are being flooded with questions about new restrictions on buying ammunition. You can still go to any of your local preexisting gun shops and buy ammunition. Reporter but if you shop online, swartz says new regulations will change the way you buy ammunition in two key ways. The main part of the ammunition law that starts on january 1st, 2018, requires that all ammo transactions take place within a licensed california dealer. However, the background part of the california new ammunition laws dont come into effect until july 1st, 2019. They will no longer have to take an exit exam testing their math and english skills in order to get a diploma. You can imagine its one law teens are happy to hear about. The republican tax plan has set off a mad scramble of people trying to hand over money to the irs before the new year. The bill puts a 10,000 cap on state and local tax deductions. For americans who own an expensive home or live in a high tax state like california, it might make sense to prepay their 2018 property taxes but even Financial Professionals say they are not sure whether prepaying is the smart move for everyone. With the bill being passed into december, you only gave the average person approximately 2, maybe 3 weeks to make an important decision. The irs posted an advisory on its website that essentially tries to sum it all up in one sentence. A prepayment of anticipated Real Property taxes that have not been assessed prior to 2018 are not deductible in 2017. A detention hearing is set this morning for an oakland man in connection with a mail bomb attack. According to federal court documents, Ross Gordon Laverty mailed at least one improvised explosive device to an East Palo Alto address back in october. One man was injured in the East Palo Alto incident. Investigator are also trying to determine if laverty is connected to a similar attack that injured a woman in alameda last month. Funeral arrangements are in place for chp officer andrew camilleri. A Public Memorial Service is saturday morning aat 8 30 in stockton. Yesterday, hundreds of chp officers honored officer camilleri and his family in west sacramento. It was at the Academy Courtyard where the officer had just graduated last march. His wife rosanna sat holding a white rose as did his children who watched with other family members. His passion was going out doing the job, arresting dui drivers, and hes taken from us by what appears to be a dui driver. Officer camilleri died after his patrol vehicle was hit Christmas Eve on 880 in hayward. His partner was injured but is out of the hospital. So far, the chp not releasing the identity of the drive who hit officer camilleris car. The driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and marijuana. Time now 5 09. A new report finds nearly half the state is at risk for coastal erosion and several bay area locations are considered especially vulnerable. And a surprise hiding behind an old painted mural at a bay area home. The wildlife that needed rescue. Its a little foggy out there in places. The 5 hundreds of birders with binoculars kick off their annual count in San Francisco. The goal is to spot 175 species this year. The birdwatchers cover a 15 mile radius around the city and this year, they started walking at the zoo. We have seen a lot of ducks today and we have probably the best bird so far was snowy plover on the beach which is threatened. We have 14 of those. The bird count started back in the year 1900. It happened every year since. And researchers use the information to monitor bird habitat loss. 83 bats were counted outside a home in menlo park. The Peninsula Humane Society rescued and rehabilitates all kinds of animals. As kpix 5s keit do shows us, why this one was a unique challenge. Reporter the house had a painted mural of st. Francis on the front. When the cleanup crew removed it they made a startling discovery, 83 bats. Mexican bats to be exact. It was 10 a. M. And since bats are nocturnal, they were knocked out because the bats were basically sleepy, they literally started sliding down the side of the house and falling to the ground. Reporter an animal control officer arrived and school them up and brought them here to the Peninsula Humane Society, where they got checked for broken wings, warmed up in an incubator and given oxygen. By dusk that same evening the Humane Society released them back into the wild and some flew right back to the painting. By the way, st. Francis is the patron saint of animals. Is god at work here . Clearly when we were talking to the bats, we didnt request to know what their religious affiliation is. But it is quite interesting and very poignant that this is where their home is. Reporter and so the homeowners will leave the bats there for now. The Humane Society says that bats make great neighbors. They eat airborne insects, moths and mosquitoes, and health pollinate local flowers. In menlo park and also help pollinate local flowers. In menlo park, kiet do, kpix 5. The rest of our bay area bridges not too bad. You are moving at okay speeds westbound Richmond San Rafael bridge. Eightminute ride from marina bay parkway to sir Francis Drake boulevard but there are some foggy spots here, as well. So you might have limited visibility also as you work your way across the span. Not a bad ride at all at the bay bridge. No meet me, no delays. It is not typical for a morning commute. But it is probably a lot of people take the week off for the holiday. So easy conditions here hopefully it stays that way throughout the morning and it has been light the last couple of days. San mateo bridge looks good, as well. 880 to 101, still a nice ride, only 13 minutes to commute as you work your way from 880 to foster city. 101 northbound at University Avenue this crash completely cleared out of lanes. Traffic now up to 64 Miles Per Hour. So youre in the green. We are seeing lots of green on the screen. Youre clear as you work your way north 101 towards sfo. So lets go south of there. Lets go to the south bay in san jose. Traffic is in the green as well. You can see 101 right around 280 680, typically thats where we see things bunching up throughout the morning commute but right now everything is clear. Looking good on guadalupe parkway. And looks like 880 and 280 checking in with no trouble spots. Mass transit on time, as well. So use that to skip the roads. You have a clear commute and relatively clear skies. Just a little bit of fog out there. In fact, taking a live look out to the skyline, if you look at the bay bridge closely you can see the fog creeping in over the bay. Looking to get into the 40s here this morning. 34 degrees in livermore right now. Your visibility with that fog im talking about anywhere you see white, that is either fog or haze. In the south bay you guys are totally fine. You are able to see ten miles or more. However, in the north bay, petaluma, santa rosa, napa, you have half a mile or a mile of visibility. In fact, down here also looking at the Richmond San Rafael bridge from this map it seems like theres a little bit of fog out there. Just be careful and take your time when it comes to the weather this morning. This High Pressure system right here is whats keeping things dry. These clouds might kick off a few that well see high in the sky today but for the most part it should be sunny and beautiful. Three things to remember for the day. Sunny and seasonal. We might have that patchy fog but it will burn off by the afternoon. Then for the rest of the week, we are going to remain dry with mild daytime temperatures. New years eve and new years day, we do not see any rain in the forecast although it will be partly cloudy. But not the cloud cover we saw on the 4th of july. So fireworks should be good. Temperatures in the 60s, 50s at the coast. Looking at your sevenday forecast, that fog will burn off eventually. It will be beautiful today. Beach erosion has left bay area cliffs crumbling in recent years and a new report from uc san diego finds nearly half of the states shorelines could be at risk. It reinforces the finding from a new study from ucsan diego that 44 of the coast of california is vulnerable to erosion. It will get worse. Time to continue to reduce emissions so potentially we can slow climate change. But also, to become aware of what the impacts are in the community. Reporter the city of santa cruz is already using the results of its pioneering study looking at the likely effects of rising sea levels over the next century to determine which Vulnerable Properties can be saved and which ones may have to be sacrificed. San jose Police Looking for the suspect in a shooting death of a man on the citys east side. That shooting was reported just before 9 00 last night on van winkle lane. That victim pronounced dead at the scene. No word yet on the motive or specific suspects. This is the citys 33rd homicide of the year, far below the number reported by this time in 2016. The hunt continues for a manallegedly attacked a Sonoma County sheriffs deputies. Investigators say that 57year old larry kigar pinched the deputy several times on duncan road in guerneville yesterday. The deputy deployed his taser, but the suspect got away. Sheriffs say he has an outstanding warrant for probation violation. Funeral services set for a bay area man who survived a dark chapter in the second world war. Kpix 5s Christin Ayers was in el cerrito as friends and family gathered to celebrate his remarkable 100 years of living. Reporter he was a great man. He was a great soldier. Our dad is our hero. Reporter a world war ii hero, Ramon Regalado was a soldier in the philippines when the japanese attacked after pearl harbor. Earlier this year he said it was an honor to fight alongside soldiers for the philippine scouts. Im very proud to [ indiscernible ] reporter but after months of fighting the japanese took the philippines. Starving and diseased, ramon and thousands of other soldiers were forced to walk more than 60 miles. It became known as the bataan death march. He would escape and rejoin the military ultimately driving the japanese out. But president truman would revoke u. S. Benefits promised to filipino soldiers and it would not be until this year that congress would finally honor them. A few weeks ago, at the age of 100, ramon got his congressional gold medal in his hospital bed surrounded by family. It was bittersweet. Well deserved, longawaited, and, um, he got to actually see it. Even though he was, you know, aging and ailing, he was still fighting. You know, and i think he was fighting for us. Reporter on december 16th, ramon died. His family says he left behind a legacy of bravery and he fought to make sure High Schoolers would learn about the bataan death march. The chronicle reporting he is stepping away from his businesses after 17 former employees accused him of sexually explicit behavior and language. Pizza iolo on telegraph avenue is one of his restaurants. A former barista says hollowell put his arms around her and asked inappropriate questions about her sex life. He has several other restaurants. According to the chronicle, an outside company was brought in to investigate. The federal Emergency Management agency is shutting down its fire Assistance Centers in Sonoma County. The temporary offices in santa rosa and Sonoma Valley were open back in october to help people affected by the wine country wildfires. But fema now says that fewer people are visiting these days and not getting enough foot traffic to justify keeping the centers open. Both offices will close for good this evening at 6 00. M. , a 3. 2 quake hit near tray seen yoes north of salinas. A 3. 2 and 2. 6 around the same area this morning about 1 a. M. Over the past two days, there have been quakes of magnitude 3 or more in hollister, East San Jose and near san martin. People from San Francisco to hollister felt the shaking. No damages.
