Even though the source of the air is direct from the arctic, we can blame a High Pressure ridge off the coast of california for all the cold air thats going to move into the northeast over the next couple of days. Its not often that folks rush to pay their taxes, but the tax overhaul bill President Trump changed that for some homeowners. Theyre hoping to take advantage of the Tax Deduction before a new plan takes effect next year. John schumo is watching that. He has all the details. Good morning, john. Thats right, brook. Theres a lot of confusion, though, over that just signed tax bill. Many of those trying to prepay arent sure if it will save them hundreds, potentially thousands of dollars, or whether theyre just wasting their time. Throughout the nation, long lines have been forming at tax collection offices. The reason for those lines i wanted to prepay my real estate taxes. Oh, sure. Reporter americans who own an expensive home or live near a big city like atlanta or dallas or in a high tax state like california, massachusetts, or new york, are scrambling to see if it makes sense to prepay their 2018 property taxes. The reason being, the tax overhaul signed last week by President Trump puts a new 10,000 limit on the amount of state and local taxes people can deduct from their federal tax bill. Even accountants, though, arent always sure that preparing in 2017 will prevent the bigger hit in 2018. There is no one answer. Reporter the irs boils it down. A prepayment of anticipated Real Property taxes that have not been assessed prior to 2018 are not deductible in 2017. With the bill being passed in december, you only give the average person approximately two, maybe three weeks to make an informed decision. Reporter here in new york, Governor Cuomo allowed for prepayment of some property taxes. That may not help everyone, though, as some towns and counties are simply not equipped to calculate the payments in time. Now, critics of the republicanled tax overhaul say it disproportionately taxes the higher tax states, the blue states, that did not support President Trump in his 2016 election. Two former staffers including former Campaign Chairman jer Paul Manafort have been indicted but the others are months away. Two others including former National Security adviser Michael Flynn have pled guilty. Flynn admitted he lied to the fbi. Flynns brother tweeted the president should pardon flynn. Earlier this month the president didnt rule it out. But immediately afterward his attorney insisted there is no consideration for pardoning flynn. The white house emphasizes no one has been charged with or pled guilty to working with russia to influence the election. The question is whether mueller is trying to squeeze them for information indicated that they or others did. Recently the president supporters have ratcheted up their attacks on mueller and on his staff who they say are mostly antitrump. In toledo, ohio, four teenage boys accused of killing a man by allegedly tossing a sandbag off an overpass have been charged with murder. The teenagers appeared in court yesterday. The victim, 22yearold marquise byrd was struck on december 19th and died on friday. The teens entered denial pleas. It was their first hearing since byrd died. I saw tears today with each of the teens. I dont always see that at a detention hearing. I cant get into their heads to to say. One through his attorney stated on the record how upset he was and how sorry he was for the victim. The prosecutor said they will not be tried as adults. Theyre due back in court on thursday. Now to the latest special and quite drawn out Alabama Senate election. Last night republican roy moore filed a lawsuit to try and stop the state from certifying doug jones as the winner. The state was declared to call him the winner today. He defeated moore by about 20,000 votes but the suit alleges there were irregularities and calls for an investigtion.
