They are participating in the citys firstever turkey trot. We have details on the race and how the money raced will benefit a local charity. Reporter good morning. Happy thanksgiving. This is where people will be taking off at 8 30 a. M. Right by the lake run on embarcadero between lakeshore and grand. That 5k will wrap up around 9 30 and then around 9 30, theres also a shorter race called the stomper stomp for the kids. Its between 2 and 8 years old. They will be able to participate in that. Thats hosted by the as and their mascot stomper. And all the money raised will go to benefit the Alameda County food bank and the oakland food bank. Mayor schaaf already the grand marshal. Im so excited that 3,000 runners including 500 kids are going to be experiencing this firstever new oakland tradition. Ill see you at the starting line. This morning, new york is gearing up for the annual macys thanksgiving day parade. This is live look in new york city. A crowd of 200,000 spectators is expected to check out all the balloons. Yesterday for the first time they were broken up in the daylight hours. In the next hour the stepped up security measures in place. There is a cornucopia of things that can make thanksgiving unpleasant but the top of the list has to include conversation about politics. Debates were bad last thanksgiving. A cnn study showed families spent 20 to 30 minutes less together on the holiday compared to the previous year. Republicans to traveled to democratic areas shortened their visits by an average of almost 45 minutes. You have family members with very strong opinions about things. Yes. Incredibly. Particularly the ones who are conservative. That cnn poll showed only 5 of americans were thankful for politicians but 64 were thankful for their families. All right. Youre in luck if you are still planning to travel for thanksgiving. Aaa says that the best time to leave if you havent yet is early today as we take live look at sfo on the right. And, of course, on the left you have traffic in oakland but look, not much out there right now. Millions of americans have already arrived at their turkey day destinations of course. The rush clogged many interstates and highways both tuesday and on wednesday. Bart will be running fewer trains today for the thanksgiving holiday. Riders can expect the Train Service to operate on a sunday schedule. That means trains will start running at around 8 a. M. One perk though, parking will be free all day at all stations. All right. Temperatures will cool down a little in the bay area. As we take a live look outside at the bay bridge, several cities reached record highs and neda is tracking our holiday forecast. Maybe well go ice skating. Its going to be nice outside for today so temperatures will feel really good. The visibility is still not bad at all as far as the actual roads are concerned. We are seeing the fog though working its way around the water as it tends to do. Petaluma visibility down to about a mile. So its actually improving a little bit. Santa rosa now up to 3. Napa up to 4. Fairfield though its still low about a mile, mile and a half there. Some of our light west winds are pushing that fog through the bay towards fairfield. You can see the wind direction an onshore flow making things feel cooler. Well continue to see that onshore flow for most of the afternoon. Which is why our temperatures are just a couple of degrees cooler. Look how pretty the bay bridge looks this morning. So obviously fog not impacting the bridge. Right now temperatures its a little warmer. Heres another view of the bay bridge with some clouds out there as we wait for the sun to arrive. Cooler for the afternoon highs and we have north bay showers. Very light rain across the north bay. The next chance of rain will be on sunday and that one will be widespread. Well track it and talk about our trading afternoon temperatures coming up. We are getting new details about two flights and two close calls involving bird strikes at sfo. One of those planes had to make an Emergency Landing. First, a United Express skywest plane taking off for redmond, oregon, hit a bird before noon yesterday. The bird got stuck into one of its two engines. The plane like this one was in the air for 30 minutes before making an Emergency Landing back at sfo. United 737 bound for seattle had to abort its takeoff roll when it hit turkey vultures. This morning, the man accused of murdering kate steinle on San Franciscos pier 14 is still waiting to learn his fate. Jurors will continue deliberations on monday. They met yesterday for a second day with no verdict. The case got National Attention since the man who admitted to killing her in 2016 was in the country illegally. Jose Inez Garcia Zarate is charged with murder, assault with a Deadly Weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm. His lawyers say it was an accident. Two more women are now accusing senator al franken of touching them inappropriately. Both women spoke anonymously to the huffington post. They say he touched them during political recent in minnesota in 2007 and 2008. Franken said, quote, it is difficult to respond to anonymous accusers. Last week, a radio host released this picture of franken grabbing her chest. She said he forcibly kissed and groped her while they were on a usc o tour. This now brings the total number of accusers to four. Texas congressman joe barton apologize for a photo of him circulating on the internet. The Washington Post reporting that the 68yearold republican told a woman to whom he sent sexually explicit reporter that he would report her to the Capitol Police if she exposed it. Penneys are overing the biggest discounts this year 66 less than normal, sears 50 , macys 46 . Wallet hub says Bass Pro Shops are offering the lowest average discount this year only 21 . Now, overall the survey found that black friday discounts are generally highest on clothing, accessories and electronics and there are some great deals advertised for tvs at best buy, amazon and other places online but cnet says buyer beware. Cheap black friday tvs may not be a good deal. They cite things like too few hdmi connections and subpar resolutions. So before you think youre getting a good deal on tvs, check out the specs and make sure it has everything that you are looking for in a tv. At lake merritt between lakeshore and grant and right now im joined by alan brooks on the board of the new tradition here in oakland. This is the firstever turkey trot and sold out. Tell us how this came to be. This is an idea by the owner and founder of a local Company Called mascot sports, puts on lots of events, has a long history of running events, cycling events here in the bay area. And he just saw a need for a turkey trot race. There was not one that has ever happened in oakland. And we need to let the oakland residents and those around come out to exercise and have fun before they spend time with family. Reporter what can people expect . Its not just the 5k. You have something for kids, as well. Right. We have some small races, shorter races i should say for the kids starting at 2 years old. They are graduating up to allow all kids to be able to participate. One of the unique things is theres a medal thats being given to all the kid finishers thats exact same design as the medal that mom and dad will get but its made out of a rubberized medal so softer and wont hurt people, the kids, when they are getting excited at the finish line. John bivins and Tramel Mcclough were involved in a chase with chp officers tuesday. Mcclough was rearrested but bivins got away. I grabbed my 2yearold and ran for safety behind the Customer Service desk. I had my 7weekold attached to my chest. A surveillance camera got video of bivins later in a Convenience Store in San Joaquin County still driving the 1999 Ford Explorer from the earlier chase more federal assistance for wine country wireline. Under the original disaster declaration it was made available for public assistance and other needs assistance at 75 of the total eligible cost. Yesterday the president authorized a 100 federal cost share for emergency protective measures for a period of 30 days. Developing this morning, three u. S. Navy personnel are still missing after a plane crashed in the east asian region. This incident comes during a troubled year for the navy in this part of the world. Military plane carrying 11 Navy Personnel crashed into the Philippines Sea yesterday. They were flying from a japanese station to the u. S. S. Ronald reagan aircraft carrier. Eight people were rescued and are in Good Condition but three are still missing. There are a lot of deals to be had here and at these Big Box Stores but a lot of folks are wondering, maybe i want to just shop online. How do you know if you should brave the crowds or stay home and shop online . The folks at wallet hub say it depends on where you shop. There are big box retailers that actually are cheaper than amazon, almost 100 of the time this season, as well as kmart, walmart and target. So if you are there, youre getting a better deal from the comfort of your own home. Reporter now, she says while the big box retailers offer better deals than amazon, Department Stores like macys and sears do not. You might actually get a better deal online than there. Another reason to avoid the crowds is buy gift cards. For a tenth year in a row they are most the requested gift. According to wallet hub, amazon, visa and walmart gift cards are the most requested gift cards, itunes comes in fourth. And they note you may be able to snag gift cards at a discount this year at one of those gift card resale sites where folks sell their unused gift cards, card hub, and others. But i have a consumer warning on that note. We purchased a bunch of gift cards and we found that many of them were merchandise credits. Thats the store credit you get when you return something . Keep in mind those dont have the same protections as actual gift cards. Gift cards under state law dont expire. Theres a series of other protections. So keep in mind if you do buy something on the resale market it might be merchandise credit. Something that doesnt come with those protections, that would be those multipurpose cards like the visa gift cards. They dont have the same protections as those standard gift cards. Today temperatures expected to be about 20 degrees above normal. People have found the Perfect Place to seek relief from the heat, lace up their skates and spent the day at the ice rink yesterday but it didnt quite feel like the holidays as many stated in shorts. That broke the record for that date of 89 degrees set back in 1950. Temperatures expected to begin falling tomorrow. But they are expected to still be above the norm. Very hot thanksgiving. I know kenny graduated from ucla. 95 degrees in westwood yesterday. So impressive. He san jose broke a record yesterday, concord and salinas tied records yesterday. So today well also see warm weather. We do have this High Pressure still across southern california. Temperatures in l. A. Will be in the 90s again not as high as the mid90s and for us well also be in the mid to upper 70s. You can see though a lot of the wet weather is still being pushed up to the pacific northwest, some of it will be dropping down across the north bay this morning. But i want to show you the areas of the cold air. The cold air is all right here. So if you are heading out to michigan, minneapolis, chicago, st. Louis, it is chilly. The Desert Southwest still dealing with that High Pressure and the warmth. Heres a look at some of the highs for our friends and family in other parts of the country. 90 degrees again for the high in l. A. 87 right next door in phoenix. 80 for vegas. Denver 70. 40s for detroit and pittsburg. Thats very chilly of course. Temperatures in miami, a lot warmer at 82 degrees. So the south gets all the heat. The northnortheast gets the cold air. Heres a look at the visibility for us here at home. Our visibility this morning is starting to improve except for in napa where its down to half mile there. Fairfield about 4mile visibility now as the fog moves in from the west. So the fog forecast showing its all going to burn off by 8, 9 a. M. This morning so no dense fog advisory out there. Look at this view, its gorgeous, from our vaca cam as we wait for sunrise here in the next six minutes. Look at the pretty colors across the bay. Wow this glow is gorgeous. So comfortable out there. And not as hot as yesterday. Some of our highs across the area look like this. Low to mid70s for the east bay also in the low 70s. Around the bay temperatures in the upper 60s, low 70s. That sevenday forecast showing there is some cooling up ahead and a chance of rain up ahead but we are going to have to wait for it. Saturday night into sunday, sunday when a lot of people will be traveling back home, there is going to be some issues because the widespread rain across the bay area, then we are drying up for next week. He saw a woman stranded on a highway at night near philadelphia earlier this month. So he offered to walk to a gas station and use his last 20 to buy her gas. The following day she paid him back and brought him warm clothes and she also shared the story on social media. And created a go fund me page for him. It raised nearly 200,000.
