Well, this morning consumer advocates are applauding the governments attempt to block the merger between at t and time warner. The Justice Department filed a lawsuit to stop the deal saying it would hike prices and hamper innovation at t says the suit is radical and inexplicable. This defies logic and it is unprecedented. At ts ceo pushed back against the Justice Departments Anti Trust Lawsuit monday blocking the companys 85 billion merger with time warner. When the government suddenly discards decades of legal precedent, businesses large and small are left with no guide posts. Announced last year the deal would give at t control of time warners massive portfolio. Including hbo and cnn federal officials argued the merger would be unfair to consumers saying it without quote, mean higher monthly television bills and fewer of the new emerging options that consumers are beginning to enjoy. The record of evidence before the doj could not be more clear and convincing that there is no harm to competition and there is no harm to consumers. Some proponents of the merger believe the doj lawsuit is an effort by the Trump Administration to harm cnn which is owned by time warner. As a candidate President Trump vowed to block the deal if he won the election. Its too much concentration of power in the hands of too few. Earlier this month members of the president s Justice Department told at t that for the deal to go through the company must sell cnn. Any agreement that results in us forfeiting control of cnn whether directly or indirectly is a nonstarter. A Justice Department official says the white house played no role in its decision to challenge the merger in court. Cbs news, the white house.
