Used cell phone may have cost a man his life. We have learned that a man was killed at a gas station at east 14th street and 159th avenue in san leandro. We are told the gas station was a meeting spot for two people making a deal to sell a used phone. But for some reason, one of the two pulled a weapon and shot the other. The gunman took off. We dont know yet if the person killed was buying or selling the phone. It has been more than a month since the wildfires devastated parts of the north bay and now with the hollands approaching many holidays approaching many fire victims still have no place to call home. We have more from snow sonoma where officials are bringing in animals to help the kids. They are trying to make things as normal as possible for the fire survivors as we head into the Holiday Season. Right now is the Tree Lighting ceremony at the historic sonoma plaza. They are putting a focus on the fire survivors as well with government agency, neighbors, everybody pitching in to make sure this Holiday Season is as easy for them as possible. It has been hard for the vitale family to smile after losing their santa rosa house. But seeing the kids faces light up, it is a relief for dad, rich. All of the guys were excited about the animals. It is helpful. It is nice. It was a great surprise. His name is chili. Chili. The family came to the santa rosa fema office to file a claim. We havent really thought too much about christmas yet. What we are going to do, the kids lost all of their little treasures. Fema partnered up with animal trainers to make it easier for the kids when their parents come in for help. After a wildfire, it could be devastating to individuals and families, and especially children. Oh, my goodness. The trainers brought in the desert fox, a camel and a bush baby. Bush babies are primarily found in eastern africa. My sister smiles a lot now. And sometimes it is infectious. And you share it with one another. And it boosts the spirits of everybody. The holiday cease condition be stressful. Even more so now that the kids are asking when they can go home. And if santa will be able to find them, come christmas. I think he is confident santa will find us. He has been talking about writing letters to santa. Neighbors are also pitching in. Dozens of people throughout the town with what they call the garage nonsale. Folks put out furniture, clothes, toys, and food, so fire victims could pick up items for free. We are going to sign a lease at a place to live today. It was great timing for this couple. They came to look for essential items to furnish their new apartment. We have nothing. And it is just heart warming. Wow. The vitale family plans to rebuild saying they have the most important pieces. What is important is our family. And thats what we have. And thats all we need. Now, aside from a central item, fema also wants to help folks who are dealing with mental stress. So we want to put up a number, the crisis counseling hot line, the 1800 number on your screen and they are saying if anybody has any the fire victims and survivors especially, if theyre dealing with mental trauma, to call that number, and just to talk with someone. And now, back here at this Tree Lighting ceremony, we are talking about hundreds of people here at the historic plaza, and when i was here a month ago, a lot of staff face, very somber, and today, a lot of happy face, a lot of excitement here. The kids are happy to be here. So it is a very different scene. And this is a good thing. Because this is part of the Recovery Process for Sonoma County. And napa county. Live in downtown sonoma, kpix 5. It is a good thing. Thanks so much. Cal fire crews in Sonoma County are racing to get the scorched hillsides ready for the stormy weather. They installed culverts to help prevent flood. Officials say flood risks will be high in the burn zone areas until vegetation is restored up to five years. And a crisis in puerto rico, with a donation drive in san jose this weekend will help victims of hurricane maria. You can drop off donations at about a dozen fire stations. Some of the most important items needed include baby food, diapers, batteries, flashlights, and water filters. San jose officials and Community Organizers are supporting the twoday event. Anything that we can do in san jose, and anything we can do throughout the united states, and the world, would be a benefit to the people of puerto rico. The donation drive continues all i dont tomorrow, from 9 00 to 4 00. And right now, Berkeley Police are looking for a group of thieves behind a string of crimes. And police say robbers targeted five pedestrians in just the past week. All of those crimes happened at night. And all of them happened near the cal campus. In menlo park, a u. S. Postal Service Truck catches fire, the flames completely destroyed the roof and the first part of the vehicle. Nobody was hurt but some of the mail got singed. This leader, leaders of the California Democratic party are meeting in San Francisco and they have strong words against sexual harassment. But some say the partys actions dont exactly match. Kpix 5 political reporter melissa kaine explains. Reporter in 2009, an assembleman was ordered to stay away from a female staffer following a report he followed the woman and grabbed her breasts. Today he is in a position of leadership in the democratic party. We asked, should he be allowed to keep his leadership role . We believe in due process in this country. This is not due process. This is a back room protection family where elected officials have no self control. Strong words from candidates from office, like delane i think people have to be held accountable. Not everyone was so clear. The Party Chairman eric bowman would not give his opinion. That is a decision the speaker has to make. My comment about what i believe mr. Bocanegra needs to do is look at his own heart and figure out whether he believes he can be effective or not, and make a decision, perhaps talking with the speaker. But he did manage to point out how long ago the harassment happened. Now, remember, that incident occurred eight years before he was in the legislature, so or eight years ago, eight years ago, which was three years before he was in the legislature. Did he say anything to you about advice . What would you tell him . Think very deeply. Think about how he can serve his constituents best. The Senate President protem kevin deleon deferred to the speaker of the assembly. That part, i have no jurisdiction over. Because he is on the assembly side. And not on the senate side. But deleon did take action against a senator, tony mendosa, whose three former aides have accused of inappropriate sexual behavior. I made a decision to remove him from his chairmanship as well as other boards and commission that he currently serves on. At least for now. It is going to be an independent investigation that will be conducted with regards to the allegations that have been made towards this person. So we will let that process work itself out. We have heard reports that anthony rendon, the Assembly Speaker is considering demoting bocanegra from that leadership position. But so far, that speaker is not speak can. In San Francisco, melissa kaine, kpix 5. De finally reopens coming up, a bay area road washed away after being hit by a landslide. Finally reopens today. Im just looking to make sure there is no damage. Reporter mark. This is a type of decay that we want to take a close look at. Reporter repeat. Up one side, down the other. So we have walked over 600 miles. Reporter this has been amy nichols routine for the last few months on highway 74. We are looking at the ones that may be a hazard to the public. Reporter so far her company, daily resource group, has marked 132 trees in the region and caltrans says dying and diseased trees create fire and road hazards. They will work with a tree removal expert to take down the trees. On i80, they marked 2,000 trees and highway 9, 1800 and on highway 20, 1500 trees. The thousands of trees are marked for removal and only some have been cut down and caltrans says if the tree is on private property, they talk to the homeowner first before they take any action. Frank lives along highway 174 and has three dead trees near the front fence. If it should break off and snap when somebody is coming around the corner or something, they dont know what hit them. He got a visit from cal tran. You can see the yellow turning right now. Saying they would remove his trees for free. How much do you think this would save you . I would say 3,000 easy with the three trees here. A project that cost the state 4 million on this highway alone. If they dont have to fight a fire because of that, homes are saved, lives are saved, and if they got the money for that, use it for that, and not for something else. Next year, the trees marked on highway 174 will be removed. Now, homeowners do have the option to keep the wood after the trees are removed, but if they dont want caltrans to cut the trees down, they are liable for any damage caused if the tree falls. Then things will change come monday. Another weak little system is going to come down once again in classic fashion. It will favor the north bay instead of the south bay. And tomorrow is okay. We have sunshine, and chilly start. To sunday morning. With partly cloudy conditions, and a few high clouds up there, not much. And temperatures in the low 40s. By the time we finish, we will be up into the mid60s, inland. Thats for sunday. And here is how it looks reich now. Over san jose right now over san jose. Not too bad. 65 in concord. And morgan hill, notched 63. And then in santa rosa, 65 degrees. As we look over the city of San Francisco, the numbers right now are in the 50s. And we get chilly tonight though with the mostly clear skies. Fremont, 50. And san jose, 50. With sun up at 5 minutes to 7 00. High temperatures for tomorrow will be clustered within a few degrees of 61. So a little bit on the chilly side. But not too bad really. So partly cloudy, fair skies on sunday. And increasing clouds lead to a chance of not much on monday. North of the golden gate might get a few showers. South of the golden gate, a few showers. But tuesday and wednesday, we are back in the low 70s inland. And around the bay, we will be in the mid to upper 60s. And as we peer into next week end, well, saturday will increase clouds and then maybe next sunday, weve got another system coming in between now and then. You dont need softball fields, or you dont need coal or natural gas for backup anymore. Because solar has come down in cost. And batteries are coming down significantly as well. And when they are combined together, they are actually very efficient at providing electricity. And speaking of costs, that report has one more notable stat. The past decade has seen a dramatic drop in the cost of producing all of that Renewable Energy. Utilities scaled wind prices are down 47 . And solar prices are down 77 . So what does that mean for your monthly power bill . The cost will come down. Whether your utility is actually reducing their prices, correspondingly, that is a different story, but the cost of the energy definitely will come down. Pg e issued this statement that says in part, we stand ready to help the state reach its Ambitious Clean Energy Goals in a way that manages costs for our customers, ensures electric reliability, and gas safety that they expect and deserve. Along the Altamont Pass, kit doe, kpix 5. A turkey give away in oakland a few days ahead of thanksgiving. The Gospel Church handed out hundreds of turkeys on the parking lot on 66th avenue near the oakland coliseum. And people who showed up for the annual event enjoyed live music from the church choir. There is a few thin high clouds over us tonight and will be tomorrow morning. As the day wears on, there is not much on the way, until later on monday, clouds increase, and that is going to lead to a chance of showers north of the golden gate. That is on monday. Tomorrow is okay. Sunny, but cool. For tomorrow. And then the increasing clouds from a weak trough that is moving through, by the way, the models have gotten progressively less bullish on this, it seems that there is just not that much in it. So maybe north of the golden gate on monday. And a couple of tentths of an inch. South of the golden gate. Not much beyond light rain. All monday. Tuesday through the weekend looks dry. Next weekend, it looks like maybe on sunday, the next sunday, we could be getting more rain. And more details on that, but first, weve got to generate some revenue. And this is how we do it. Human m the germ found in and on surfers may hold an important key to human health, everything from autism to alzheimers as well as the health of our oceans. Only on 5 tonight, kpix morning anchor kenny choi introduces us to the california researcher, surfing the world of microbes, and making waves waves in the scientific community. Catching a wave. It is as close as it gets to walking on water. What is there not to like . I can come out here and put my hands into the water, and feel the power of it. I just get taken away from every day life and enjoy what we have here. What we have here is in San Francisco and in beaches around the world, surfers immersed in water. And that is a subject of a new scientific study. Uc san diego researcher bio chemist cliff capono. I am hoping to find actual evidence, empirical evidence, that illustrates how related we are to the ocean. He is analyzing surfers, not for their style, but their microbes. We are only part human, you know, we are mostly microbial. About three pounds worth of microbes live on or in our bodies, mostly in our gut and tens of trillions of living organisms including bacteria, fungi and viruses. And it is called the micro biome and helps to govern human health and a good mix is a Healthy Human response and an abnormal mix could play a role in alzheimers, diabetes, cancer and certain autoimmune disorders. Trying to see how the microbes in us and on us affect these diseases. Surfers intimately interact with a second biome, the oceans. A question. Is there an exchange of microbes between the surfers and the sea and does that mix benefit human health. Is the surfer different than a person who spends their week in an office, or months or years. Can we detect differences . Interest rthere differences . He is a mate are there differences . He is a native of the big island of hon lieu. A skilled surfer. And he is passionate about his heritage. The polynesian people, the people i belong to, we were explorers of the ocean. He embarked on a different kind of exploration, a nine month quest that took him around the world and the goal is to collect hundreds of samples from surfers on the continents for a bione project. 20 million surfers across the planet. From ireland, morocco and spain and more, and surf the rugged coast and then swab surfers he met along the way and document the trip with a video camera. The swabs look like q tips and we welcome them on the skin, the eye, mouth, nose, chest, and the naval of the surf pwoad participants and ask them for fecal samples. And they had detailed questionnaires about their health and habits. 7 43 a. M. He also took a trip to San Francisco. So he ended up here, along the pacific coast. And at local surf shops. The water here is frigid. The reception was anything but. I mean we got more than enough participants to sample. And it was i mean it was really amazing. Reporter all surfer samples are shipped overnight with dry ice back to san diego and stored in a freezer. These are from ireland. He then ran sophisticated tests on them, analyzing their chemicals, as well as their genetic sequences. Each piece here represents a unique molecule. The day it is part of the gut project where scientists are analyzing hundreds of thousands of human micro biomes from children and adults from all walks of life. Trying to understand how the micro biome, the bacteria in our guts affect our overall health. He believes ocean microbes do play a role in helping surfers and by polluting the oceans, it pollutes the planet. And as for the surfers it is interesting. Cool. Trying to figure out in a scientific way how it works. In san diego, kenny choi, kpix 5. Results of the research will be available once the study is published. Fascinating. Yes. Absolutely. Thanks for watching. We will be back here at 11 00. And for news throughout the evening, the latest always on www. Cbssf. Com. Have a great night. We will see you at 11 00
