Sunday morning a gunman opened fire at a small rural church in Sutherland Springs. Thats about 30 miles southeast of san antonio. Besides 26 killed another 20 were wounded. The dead range in age from 5 to 72 including the pastors daughter and a pregnant woman. The suspected gunman has been identified as dev kelley. He used a militarystyle assault rifle. Kelley was found in his car dead moments later. Courtney zubowski, good morning. Reporter good morning, annemarie. The town is hurting as this small town puts together the pieces after more than two dozen people were killed inside that church. A day after the worst mass shooting in texas history, investigators are still trying to determine a motive. More than two dozen people, including several children, were shot and killed during Sundays Services at the First Baptist church of Sutherland Springs. We all in here know what happened today, and its something we all say does not happen in small communities. But we found out today it does. Reporter the victims ages ranged from 5 to 72 years old. It was bad. I mean i tried to i tried to help as many people as i could, you know. It you just cant explain it. Your mind doesnt want to grasp it, you know, the shock of it. Reporter the suspect has been identified as devin kelley, a 26yearold air force veteran who was discharged a year ago. He entered the church and proceeded to shoot most if not all people inside. As he exited the church, a suspect dropped his rifle and fled. A local resident grabbed his rifle. Reporter he drove off the road. When Police Arrived, the man was dead. Sutherland springs is a Rural Community about 35 miles east of san antonio. On sunday a local resident described it as the kind of place where Everybody Knows everybody, including people who were killed. Devin kelley served in the air force from 2010 to 2014. The guy with the rifle came to my truck as the shooter took off and he briefed me quickly on what had just happened and he said we have to get him, and so thats what i did. He said the gunman eventually lost control of the vehicle and crashed. He hit the ditch. The gentleman that was with me got out, rested his rifle on my hood, and kept it aimed at him, telling him to get out, get out. There was no movement. There was none of that. They stayed at the scene until the Police Arrived five minutes later and langendorff said he just did the right thing. Local, state, and federal officials have been out at the church since the shooting yesterday morning. What we know right now is that 26 people were killed, 20 others injured. The suspect is dead, and what theyre telling us is that before the shooting, people spotted the suspect across the street at a gas station dressed in all black wearing Tactical Gear and a protective vest. He then walked into the church, started shooting before he went into the church, and then, they say, he shot nearly every person inside the church, a church where 50 people went to pray and many didnt make it out alive. Well, we went running outside when we heard the shots, and then we looked at each other and said, im not going to be outside for bullets to fly because we heard ricochet. Reporter devin kelley was found in his car dead just a few miles from the church. Theyre telling us that a private citizen with a rifle went after him. At this point investigators dont know if that private citizen was the one who killed him or if the suspect shot himself. Annemarie . Courtney, i know you mentioned people saw him in Tactical Gear before. Did anybody else see anything before the shooting . Thats what investigators are trying to figure out right now. Theyre going back, looking at social media, theyre talking to friends, talking to family to see if there was any clue as to whether this was going to happen.
