Someone jumping over the entrance gate getting onto bart for free. But the board of directors for bart says they are trying to do something about it. They unanimously voted last night on two ordinances to fight this problem and punish fare evaders. Beginning next year, officers will be hired to board bart trains and ask every person for proof of purchase. If you cant provide one, you will be charged 75 the first time, minors will be charged 55. Three strikes will lead to a criminal charge. Frustrated bart riders who pay their fare hope this will force change. The guy just, like, hopped through the emergency exits, didnt even pay and just got on the train. Attendants dont do anything. Reporter 75 of barts operating costs come from people who follow the rules and pay. Officials think it will bring back 8 to 11 million each year. Week one of a highprofile murder trial just ended for a man accused of killing 32year old kate steinle on pier 14. It ended with testimony from the federal agent whose stolen gun was used in the deadly shooting. An illegal immigrant claims he found the gun and it fired by accident. In his testimony yesterday, a bureau of Land Management ranger said that he put the loaded gun in a backpack left under the front seat of his suv that was parked along the embarcadero. Then he went to dinner with his family. A public defender pressed him with questions yesterday on why he left a loaded firearm in his car. New details an inmate Hunger Strike that had been called often is back on again after comments by the sheriff of the Santa Clara County jail. Sheriff smiths comments were directed at criticism at an undersheriff who is running against her in 2018. Classes will go on as normal at Milpitas High School today after a pair of gun scares put students on lockdown twice. Just before lunch yesterday, a 14yearold freshman was spotted with a semiautomatic pistol. After he was taken in a custody he said he brought it for protection. It this morning, the Santa Cruz CountySheriffs Department is expected to announce an arrest in connection with the bear fire in the Boulder Creek area. It began about 11 days ago burning 6 homes and forcing hundreds of people to evacuate. Nearly a dozen firefighters were hurt while battling the bear fire. Its 100 contained. More than a dozen schools in santa rosa will reopen today after weeks of classrooms being off limits following the wildfires. Kpix 5s Jessica Flores is live in santa rosa with the details. Reporter kenny, we are in front of james monroe elementary school. This is one of 13 schools opening today. An additional 11 schools will reopen on monday. And here at james monroe, several students and several teachers lost their homes in the devastating fire. It will be an emotional return for a lot of folks here. Schools have been closed for nearly three weeks. That fire sent ash and soot into class rooms. The district was worked around the clock to clean the campuses. About 200 workers have been cleaning campuses and replacing over 3,000 airconditioning filters at 24 schools. The superintendent says about 80 Staff Members lost homes in the fire and also 900 students have addresses listed in the burn zone. But its still unclear how many students have been displaced. The immensity of this tragedy cannot be is unprecedented. We cannot predict what will happen when everyone is back in school. One of the main things is not everybody is going to come back to school. Reporter now, the district will have Mental Health services on campus, counselors and social workers from even different cities like San Francisco here to help out students and teachers. And the district also says anybody who lost his home in the fire will be eligible for free meals no questions asked. Income will not be a factor. The district is also working out how it will make up for loves time. But they havent figured it out yet. Their real priority is getting classrooms back open. Pg e wants an easier time passing along costs to customers if its found liable for wildfires in california. Arcing power lines were reported shortly before the wine country wildfires began earlier this month. If pg e is found to be at fault, it could end up paying billions of dollars in fire related costs. The Public Utilities commission and cal fire are looking into pg e lines as a possible cause. Now, while no cause has yet been determined, pg e has been lobbying the puc to make it easier to pass along costs by increasing customers bills. The november 9th concert will be at at t park being organized by a coalition of Community Leaders and businesses called band together bay area. It has already raised 6. 5 million for people affected by the fires. And the group is making sure that every penny made from the concert goes to the victims, as well. Tipping point is going to receive 100 of all ticket sales so we can put it to where its needed most, low income communities and those most vulnerable communities that have been impacted by the devastating fires up north. We have learned that the very best seats at the concert will be donated to first responders, volunteers and families affected by the fires. Otherwise, tickets are set to range from 49 to 199. High pressure still over the west coast but its finally beginning to ebb a bit this morning and as it does, the numbers will follow suit. So while we remain warm through the weekend, not as warm as we have been. The one caveat about heading to the beaches, northwesterly swells are up and so is the rip current and sneaker wave threat for ocean beach and montara through marin. We have a High Pressure putting a lid on the particulates we generate with the morning and night commute, as a result unhealthful levels of pollution in the atmosphere for the east bay and in the santa clara valley. When flames approached his neighborhood he and his roommate john went door to door knocking and waking people up. He is my Guardian Angel when hell roared through my neighborhood. A Piedmont High School teacher is on administrative leave for a second time amid allegations of inappropriate behavior towards students. Mark cowherd a history teacher was first put on leave last month. He allegedly touched students inappropriately and sent Inappropriate Text Messages and had alcohol in front of students and making sexual comments. Despite that the Piedmont Unified School District allowed him back in the classroom in late september. But on wednesday, dozens of parents packed the School Board Meeting demanding that the district remove him from campus. The Bay Area News Group reports that cowherd is back on leave as his case is reviewed by the Alameda County district attorneys office. Berkeley police are looking for a road rage suspect accused of hitting someone with his new mercedes. Heres who police are after. They say the victim yelled at the man last thursday said every saying he had been driving recklessly on ashby avenue. The suspect got out of the car and punched a passenger. Thats when two people including the alleged punching victim got out of their car but police say the suspects returned to his car and hit one of the men with it. They had minor injuries. A dramatic scene in the middle of the pacific ocean. A couple of boaters from hawaii were rescued after being lost at sea for five months. We probably had less than 24 hours before our boat sank. The boat was spotted in the open ocean on wednesday about 900 miles southeast of japan. The two women set sail from hawaii back in may with their dogs on their way to tahiti but misfortune struck when the rigging on their mast broke and a Communication System failed. From that point on the women made a distress call every day. It was very depressing and it was very hopeless. But the only thing you can do, so you do what you can with what you have. One of the areas hit the hardest Sonoma County. Tomorrow the city of santa rosa is holding a Remembrance Day for the victims killed in the deadly wildfires. People will also gather at 11 a. M. A total of 23 people in Sonoma County died in the fires which destroyed thousands of homes and businesses.
