And here the Fountain Grove neighborhood. Earlier today they recovered the bone fragments of a missing person. Reporter this was the grim task for searchers and investigators. Scooping up whats left of a person into a body bag this afternoon. Search and rescue crews found the humane remains in a bag. The human remains in a bag. The person was asleep or bedridden. It happened so fast, and theres nothing you could do. Reporter the recovery happened at journeys end mobile home park. Searchers were checking two known addresses of two missing people. So far theyve only recovered one missing person in this park. Theyre still trying to locate the second person. If we can identify the bedrooms first, well search those bedrooms, and well work our way out toward the house. Reporter crews went through every part of the targeted home, lifting up collapsed roofs. Cadaver dogs went through the debris to sniff for human remains. Aside from bone fragms, the search team found whats left of an assault rifle. Alameda county Sheriffs Department is one of the agencies helping with the search. We unfortunately had some expertise in mass casualty and fatality because of the ghost ship warehouse fire. We want to make sure we do things correctly. Reporter hundreds of people lived at that mobile home park, many seniors living by themselves. If we only have a few deaths here, well be very fortunate and thankful. Reporter the search teams are only doing targeted searches of those known addresses. Where we are standing is an unincorporated part of the county and he is adding another 1,000 units of housing destroyed in the fire in those numbers. All right. Santa rosa schools are gonna be closed throughout the week. New Evacuations Ordered near the pocket fire to the north of me, santa rosa. Hielsburg residents being told they should leave as soon as possible. The pocket fire in geyserville, katie . Reporter if you take a look behind me, you can see the flames up on the hill of this pocket fire. Between chalk hill road. North of highway 128 between chalk hill road, and geysers road in geyserville, you are under a mandatory evacuation fire. That is because of what youre looking at right now. This pocket fire is approximately 10,000 acres. The reason this is so dangerous, these winds are going to be blowing from north to south tonight. And where this fire is located, we are less than a mile from geyserville. Theyre worried that this fire could impact that town tonight. Wa learned that there are now 9,000 firefighters here in sonoma county, mend dino, all the counties, 9,000 firefighters. One of the biggest fires they are facing is the nuns fire. 45,000 acres and only 5 contained. Reporter its difficult to make out at this point because of the smoke in the air. But the active fire is burning just beyond the tree line behind me. There are a few firefighters that have been left here to guard this property. But there were dozens more here earlier in the day. Favorable weather conditions allowed them to layout their defenses. Reporter the same winds that fanned the flames, turning small fires into infernos are working to firefighters advantage. Obviously the weather today is very favorable for us doing this. Weve made very Good Progress this morning on our fire and operations so far. Reporter the hotshot crew from the u. S. Forest service near yosemite set back fires along Lone Mountain road hoping the fires will meet and snuff each other out. Were bringing fire to the main fire. And once they hit another, theres no more fuel to burn so the fire will go out over time. Reporter cooler temperatures and favorable winds have finally helped firefighters get the upper hand against the Massive Wildfire burning in the hills above sonoma. The hotshots who working eat, and sleep on the fire line stood guard this afternoon, their backs to the blaze. All the guys that are holding the line are looking in the green. Were looking for any spot fires, any emberpath thats gone go over into the green so we can react on it real quick. Reporter firefighters were able to cut a line around the fire with a bulldozer around this property. They believe that will be enough to stop the fire once it finally arrives. Federal reenforcements are also arriving for the fire fight in Northern California, including a large air fleet. 15 large air tankers available in the state. Thatll help across the state. And that in addition to that, two of the dc10s, very large air tankers which assist with ongoing wildfires. And we brought up to speed a great deal of firefighting helicopters, over 37, in support of this challenge. In addition to that air support, the Forest Service has 4,000 federal firefighters on the ground to help out with this, including 12 of those hotshot crews as they call them. This neighborhood which as i understand is outside of the city limits of santa rosa, we have only seen two families that have been escorted back in here with law enforcement. Neither one of them stayed very long. I dont know if they were looking for specific items. Just for their own privacy, we didnt approach them to ask. That flag behind you is such a moving image of the strength of the people in this neighborhood, and the strength of the survivors that are trying to figure out what their lives are gonna be like after the fires are out. Well go to healdsberg, with 15 mile per hour winds beginning tonight. A wind surge will last about 12 to 18 hours with gusts as high as 60 Miles Per Hour. Wind is not bad right now. It will increase overnight tonight. Futurecast at 2 00 am. The wind gusts are 20 to 40 Miles Per Hour. Staying elevated through 9 00 am. A family struck with tragedy. A 14yearold dies fleeing from the flames after he and his entire family took off on foot trying to find safety. How the community is stepping up to help exhausted firefighters take a little break. They used that time to find people who were missing, to get folks back in their home fist they were left standing. Some of them are not. This fire ripped through the community rather quickly. And the death toll has been bumped up to 9. We know the names of three of the nine. Reporter this is the sheppard family of redwood valley. Theyre short one member. Kai died as he and his family tried to run from the complex fire early monday morning. He was just being a kid. He got woke up early in the morning to say get out of here, and he didnt make it. I cant think of any tragedy which would be worse than that. Reporter his entire family fled the fire on foot down this driveway, which is about a mile long. Kai didnt make it out. His mother, father, and sister did, with lifethreatening injuries. His familys fundraising page says theyve all undergone numerous surgeries. His mother has lost part of her leg. That fire killed roy bowman and his wife elsie. They died in their home. Im just in shock i guess. Reporter this morning another bus bringing the total to nine in mendocino coyne. While the name of the recent victim isnt being released, the sheriff says its someone he knew well. You certainly know who does kids on what team and whos involved in the fire. When you know these people by more than just names, youre a victim also. Reporter Mendocino County doesnt have a specific number of how many people are missing. I can tell you that the entire Detective Division of the Sheriffs Office today spent the day looking for people who are at risk who havent been heard from. Thats when the tally went from eight to nine this morning. And as you can see by this devastation here, the sheriff says the number is likely still set to increase. Emily turner kpix 5. A thick layer of smoke continues to hover in the sky cofrom all those fires in sky from all those fires in the north bay. The air quality hasnt been thousand in decades. And this bad in decades. Many stores have been selling out of protective masks. We go to where the mayor is live in san jose. Reporter it is expected to get worse. And thats because of the wind. You might have noticed that the wind has picked up at my location here at Valley Christian High School in south san jose. We can look across the valley, and it looks like the air quality has even gotten worse just since the last hour, and it is expected to continue to worsen as the winds pick up in the north bay, blowing a lot of that smoke down here into the south bay, and throughout the bay area, making things unhealthy. Reporter its been a weeklong run of some of the most dirty area the bay area has ever seen. A Health Hazard especially for children. Children are tend to be more active outside. Theyre taking in more of the air pollution than adults tend to take in. So theyre a particularly susceptible population. Reporter thats one of the reasons valley christian canceled schooled for its nearly 3,000 students for the second straight day. For High Schoolers this would have been one of the most spirited days of the year. Homecoming. Rallies, tonights dance, and saturdays game have all been postponed. Students and staff health is our main concern. So we made a decision based on the air quality over the past few days to cancel school. Reporter the school on top of a hill 7 miles from downtown san jose is in a unique spot it see what the students would be breathing. Definitely disappointed and missing out on the homecoming game on saturday. But theres definitely a lot of understanding the reason why weve made that decision. Reporter it was one of just a few schools in the Santa Clara Valley region closed with dirty air. Unified kept schools open today. But students were kept inside for breaks and outdoor athletic evens were canceled, including the homecoming game. Everyone was looking forward to it. I asked this girl to the dance now we have to wait until they give us another date. Reporter the Central CoastAthletic Association moved the end of football season back to november 11th to account for all the schools that are having games postponed this week because of the pad air. The Oakland RaidersFootball Game again the chargers will go on according to the last accounts. And cal football against Washington State will go on at berkeley tonight. That game is at 7 30. Some events are being canceled. The stride for life Komen Foundation walk scheduled for San Francisco for sunday has also been canceled because of the air quality. Today some evacuees in napa county were allowed back into their homes near the silverado trail but own for a few minutes. The atlas fire has burned 48,000 acres. About 27 contained. Kpix 5 john ramos was with returning residents today on the western edge. Reporter a group of people gathered at a roadblock near napas silverado trail this morning. The first time ive ever been evacuated. Im not very good at it. We had a theoretical plan but it all goes up in smoke, quite literally, when it happens. Reporter most are residents of circle oak. And the chp began driving small groups up to their homes for a quick 5 to 10 minute visit. Some wanted to pick up meds or collect paperwork. One woman hoped to spend her precious time trying to catch some of the feral cats that live at her house. Just grateful to get it, and hes got a bunch of meds at the house he needs to get. Reporter the drive up was a bit depressing. The development itself was in tact. And as residents checked out their property, there was evidence of something startling. The fire that drove them out on sunday had returned yesterday. The firemen saved all of our houses yesterday for the second time in a row. Reporter vena feher helped design and remodel the home she loves so she collected her house plans in case she ever needed to rebuild it. And thats about all she walked away with. That and a renewed sense of gratitude. If thats the biggest thing, how do i get smoke out of a leather sofa, were the luckiest people in the world. Nearly five days of fighting that fire leads to exhausted firefighters. Getting some muchneeded rest whenever and wherever they can. This guy found a lawn chair. Anything to get a little bit of rest. And this picture posted by a very grateful family, exhausted firefighters getting a hot meal served on the lawn. These firefighters lost their station in Fountain Grove to the flames. A full investigation begins interest the cause of the fire that ravaged santa rosa. Were gonna look at where teams are focusing their search. Winds increase tonight.
