But look at downtown calistoga. Restaurant after restaurant after restaurant, business after business after business, they are all closed. Everybody listened to the warning. They got out of dodge, so to speak, and evacuated town with the mandatory Evacuation Order into effect. I think what probably alerted people the most was that they got the all clear. They thought they were out of this thing, and now tonight, theyre just afraid this thing is really going to blow up. Im also near what is called the tubbs fire. Thats directly behind. At last check it has burned more than 28,000 acres. And take a look at the desolation in calistoga tonight. We ventured around town this afternoon, its a wild west ghost town as one guy said. We saw very few cars on the street. Cal fire says it is committed to the fire fight. So let me give you the very latest. Nearly 8,000 firefighters are on the frontlines of all these fires. 73 helicopters have been flying above, and more than 30 tankers are dropping water, but only, only when the conditions can permit that. Cal fire says it does have access to every available aviation asset in the country, but cal fire, beingvery clear about the danger tonight. Were concerned, and anticipate that before the day is over, several of these fires will merge. These fires are just literally burning faster than firefighters can run in some cases, so imagine being out there in difficult terrain with miles, and miles of fire line, and to try to catch up to that, and put in land line, or lay hose. Pretty challenging. Reporter cal fire certainly not alone. Additional crews from oregon, nevada, washington, and arizona are headed to the frontlines tonight. Strong winds shifted around the fire, sending flames back towards calistoga. I talked to the mayor about 4 00, that is their big concern, of course. Everyone in this city, the population he told me is about 5200 people. Theyre under a mandatory Evacuation Order tonight. Kpix 5s Juliette Goodrich has spent the afternoon with some of those folks trying to get out. Reporter allen, we are on a farm where the owners here had to clear out, because of the mandatory Evacuation Order. Take a look behind me. This is the fire. That is the mount st. Helena, and thats been going all afternoon. Weve actually seen flames shoot up. Now, our guide just to how the wind is going, on this property is actually a wind gauge, its moving slowly, but it picks up ever so often. I want to kind of move you over here as well. Were on the farm, you can see, they still have the livestock here. They had to clear out, and leave their pigs here. On the other hillside. This is towards santa rosa, youve got another fire. Essentially, calistoga is surrounded by two fires. I know we were saying earlier, that fires may merge. I dont know if thats the case for this particular location, but you can just see how the sky is filled with smoke on two sides. Separate sides, north end, and south end. For people here affected by the tubbs fire, this is round two of evacuations. This quaint tourist town is now a ghost town. Its been a challenge. Reporter george hope, and his entire family given orders to clear out, and so they did. Hopes main priority, getting his 94yearold father, and 93 yearold aunt safely moved out and out of the smoke. How are you doing . Are you okay . Well, just hanging in there. We got all our belongings in my trunk. Reporter for some who grew up in this town, a population now, 5,000, recall a fire back in 1964, that almost did the same thing. Both sides of the mountains were on fire. My dad and mom knelt down and they prayed. My father went to sleep. Everybody evacuated. Woke up the next morning, it was all gone. This is really scary. I think its really coming. Reporter for some, the hardest part about evacuating is leaving livestock behind. We cant take them. Theyre not like regular pets. They cant be like, come on in the car with me. So theyre staying here, and hopefully, everything will be okay. They made it through the first fire. They all huddled in the middle together, and they kind of just hunkered down, and they were scared. Reporter this latest mandatory Evacuation Order is round two. The cops told us, do whatever you need to do and get out. So thats what were doing. Reporter the tubbs fire swept through their property sunday night, destroying antique cars, power lines, and some of of their livestock. I thought it was gone. I thought it already went path over the hill, and we were done. But now it just came back around because of the wind. Reporter where there is smoke there is fire, and in this town, the smoke is almost unbearable. Back out here live in calistoga, where the owners of this farm have cleared out. They have not had cell service the past couple of days, theyve been relying on nick to give their report. Allen, were actually going to clear out as well. Were going to come down to you, and meet up with you. I can tell you, information is spotty for people here. Because they dont have cell service. Theyve been relying on fire crews telling them to get out, and also pg and e crews, trying to clear the lines that are down right now. Absolutely. The mayor of calistoga told me he just got cell service for the first time today, so its very, very spotty. A local chef told us also, that typically this town, the restaurants should be full, the hotels packed, and here it is. It is a ghost town, and its going to hit the economy here very, very hard no matter what happens to this little town. All right, weve been talking about calistoga in napa. Lets go to Sonoma County, because another evacuation advisory is in effect, as two fires are threatening to merge into one in the area of Boyes Hot Springs. Thats where andrea is tonight. Reporter the tree tops here tonight in Boyes Hot Springs, the concern is that the fire directly behind our camera will make a run through this neighborhood. People here are scared. Take a look behind me. There are sprinklers, and hoses trained on roofs right now, trying to give their homes a fighting chance. Its going to be mandatory soon. Get things together. Reporter up and down, in Boyes Hot Springs, deputies are giving Evacuation Orders. Its hard to see which direction flames are coming in from. Sheriffs office. Right on the other side of this house is a hill there. Its hard to see it from last night. We were Walking Around the corner, and you could see the fire line and all of that last night behind. Went there around 11 00 and couldnt see anything. Reporter across the street, theres a fire hose already hooked up to a hydrant. This Small Community has been under siege for days, waiting for what may be inevitable. Were really nervous. Obviously, weve got a couple of fires that are going to converge on us. Reporter sprinklers, and hoses are trained on rooftops around the town. Someone said it might help. Just keep it moist. Were doing everything that we can. Better to try something, even if its not proven. Reporter now right now, it is merely an evacuation advisory here in Boyes Hot Springs. It has not moved to a mandatory evacuation yet. I can tell you about two hours ago, many people just got up and left. They did not want to stick around to see what may happen this night, and wait for that knock on the door at the last second, allen, to tell them to get out. All right, andrea, borbe, thanks so much. There is another fire forcing evacuations, theyre calling that one the nuns fire. Its burned more than 7600 acres so far. That fire in the Sonoma County north of glenn ellen. Only 2 contained. Joe vasquez covering that for us tonight. Ramp yeah, allen. You can see what that fire has already done here in the neighborhoods surrounding glenn ellen. Now, there are hot spots growing just west of us. And theres concern that it will return. Authorities are worried about high winds tonight, catching flames, and shooting the fires like torches into neighborhoods. Thats what happened sunday night. All right, this afternoon, we have found hot spots along Bennett Valley road. Theyre appearing in vineyards, and near houses. You can see, and hear, just how dry this vegetation is. Thats why firefighters deliberately set this fire, to clear away the fuel. But we also found fires that were spontaneous, and could grow worse as the night goes on. Parts of Bennett Valley have already been wiped out from the thunderstorm sunday night. Now authorities are worried that the fire will come back through. They have expanded their area of evacuation. A new evacuation advisory, not mandatory, but advisory, is now in effect for Boyes Hot Springs and the northern part of the town of sonoma. Weve been evacuated. Reporter margaret priest lewis lives near glenn ellen. The cops came by earlier today, and told her it was time to go. Lots of friends around, and we want to be nearby. After that at some point, i want to get away from here, and not be so heavily involved with fires. Reporter all eyes right now are on the wind. It has been erratic a little bit, but it has not been very sharp. Right now, it is a calm wind. A lot of people here hoping that the forecast doesnt come true, at least not the worst version of it, and that the winds will stay calm as possible, so we dont get a repeat of sunday night. Reporting live, joe vasquez, kpix 5. All right, joe, we are all, all hoping for that for sure. Ive got to tell you guys, its not so eerie that the town is empty. Its eerie, is, is this the calm before the storm . Everybody is on edge, expecting that. Just a few minutes ago, we saw a convoy of trucks and trailers headed east out of town. Apparently, theres a big animal evacuation center, those now have to be evacuated, because that could be in danger. This is a good time to be doing it. Allen, thank you. You bet. Air quality in the bay area stinks. You know that. You can smell it. It has reached historically poor levels, and it is only getting worse. A look now at our airport cam in san jose. This is san jose. 100miles from the fires. The smoke is filling the air in Santa Clara Valley for the first time now, theyre getting it. You can see the haze hanging over the airport. Meantime, sfo experiencing a number of flight delays, and cancelations, due to the poor visibility. Paul deanno tracking the winds now. Thats what everybody is, as allen says, on pins and needles about. This wind potential. It is going to increase. Not to the levels of sunday night, but it is going to increase, to 45, even 50 Miles Per Hour. More of the smoke will be sent to the south, down towards san jose, San Francisco, and in between, as that wind will come from the north, pushing all of that smoke to the south. There was a point in time this afternoon, where the air quality hit this level, 364. On a very unhealthy day, which happens once or twice a year will get 200. Its nearly double that. Napa, close to the fire, nearly twice the very unhealthy level. Where do we go from here . Tomorrow, the air quality will remain very unhealthy, perhaps even hazardous in the north bay, and the unhealthy air quality will spread all the way out to the Santa Clara Valley. As bad as the air was today in your neighborhood, it likely will be worse throughout the Morning Hourses tomorrow, perhaps spreading into the afternoon. Speaking of the wind, that has kicked up the red flag warning for all bay area hills and mountains, with those winds gusting to 40, to 50 Miles Per Hour. The fire danger will be critical between now and lunchtime tomorrow. More on the air quality problems. There are communities like walnut creek that are 50, to 75 miles away from the fires. Live in walnut creek with more on that. Reporter were live here in the foothills, just above walnut creek, and neighbors tell us, on any gaven day, they can see 20 miles into fairfield, but today, that visibility down to a half mile, or a mile or so. The bay area air Quality Management says we have very unhealthy air advisories from napa down to santa clara counties. The impact will be felt for days. Even if youre outside of the burn area, they say the conditions are unpredictable, and can get bad quickly. For example, oakland unified schools are advising schools to cancel pe and outdoor recess. Different parts of the bay area are experiencing Different Levels of air quality. So in some parts of the bay area, it might feel okay to go outside, but in other parts of the bay area, it might be too smoky, and you can feel it right away, in your lungs, and your chest, and even in your eyes and throat. Which way is fairfield . Show me . Its pretty much straight over that telephone pole right now. I dont see anything right now. No, you cant see it right now. But you can see it on a clear day. Reporter all righty, so us field crews here, we spent all day in the smoke. Some of us have gotten these masks that we used to wear when we spend hours of the day out in that particulate matter. Theyre recommending one n95. Thats got a little nubby in front of it that helps you breathe. Again, if you can stay out of the air, tomorrow is going to be worse. We are live near fairfield, kpix 5. When it comes to wind speed, its obvious, wind speeds increase, the fires can spread quicker, as we saw sunday night. Embers were being blown, 70, 75, 80 Miles Per Hour. Taking these small fires and turning it into the mess we have outside now. Air quality is still unhealthy for the entire bay area. That is smoke. That is not cloud cover in the financial district. Only 66 for a high today in San Francisco. Half moon bay, 62. Tomorrow, air quality will be worse. If everything verifies, there is the possibility tomorrow may be some of the worst air quality weve had throughout the bay area that weve had in modern records here. Unhealthy everywhere else, it likely will slip into the hazardous area closer to the fires. Why is the wind changing . Its this low pressure area here, dragging a cold front through. Eventually, cold fronts will bring us rain. Thats exactly what we do want in this case. Bringing the wind, and bringing the wind direction change behind that low. See the wind direction to the south in that will decrease the humidity, and obviously in the higher elevations, weve been talking about the wind speed increasing. Theres the chance that this may happen again saturday. As a ridge of High Pressure ds oregon coastline, we may get another offshore wind event, decreasing the humidity. Once again on saturday, and likely keeping the smoke around the bay area through the weekend. The winds increase tonight, turning northerly. Its going to take a bad situation and make it worse. The potential for pretty rough air quality, rougher than today, tomorrow morning. Looks like im putting clouds on the sevenday forecast. Thats the haze and smoke, likely with us through early next week. 80s inland, and 70s in the bay through sunday. Thats your forecast. Well be right back. You could save energy by living off the grid. Completely. Or. Set the washing machine to cold. Do your thing. Energy upgrade california.
