There was also a frantic effort in Sonoma County to save horses in the fire zone. Coming up, a group of animal lovers who came together to help. And were live between santa rosa and glen ellen both areas getting hit hard by these wildfires that are continuing to burn. [ music ] wildfires broke out in wine country. And theyre already among the deadliest in californias histor its been 2 full days since the destructive wildfires broke out in wine country and they are already among the dma de los muertoslyest in californias history. Im michelle griego. Im anne makovec. 17 people are dead. That number is expected to rise. No fire is more than 3 contained. The state and inner federal governments have declared a state of emergency. Winds will shift causing concern among firefighters in napa and solano counties. Kpix 5s Jessica Flores joining us live now near Wooden Valley road with the latest on the atlas fire. Jessica. Reporter the atlas peak fire has moved to solano county. We are not far from Solano Community college. Behind me, you can see this fire continues to grow. This is the home and these are the firefighters looking down on the fire just watching it closely making sure it doesnt creep any closer to this property. The Community College is now set up as an evacuation center. As we made our way into the county, we saw several trailers in the parking lot waiting to get home. Its unclear what will happen with this fire. The wind may shift and cause more evacuations. Thousands have been evacuated from napa county. The fire is 26,000 acres. 125 structures burned. 5,000 more structures threatened. More evacuations have been ordered. Ill tell you where you need to be evacuating to as i get my notes. Firefighters have evacuated this morning, um [ pause ] im trying to find the exact street for you but ill get back to that. But at this point the fire has killed two people an elderly couple married for 75 years who couldnt escape the flames when it tore through their Silverado Country Club and that club is where we counted at least 40 homes burned to the ground there. And again, going back to where they have evacuated more people this morning, thats dry creek road and redwood road in napa. Those are the areas that are evacuated. They have evacuations center at Crosswalk Church and napa valley college. They want everyone evacuated because they dont want any more deaths at this point. Firefighters trying to get everyone evacuated. The fire continues to burn. Its crossinged over from napa county to solano county. 26,000 acres gone. Cal fire doesnt know the scope of the devastation. The Kaiser Hospital in santa rosa where 130 patients were evacuated monday morning is still closed. Patients had were evacuated on buses, ambulances and nursess own cars. One doctor described the bind they were in as the flames grew closer. Really everybody here was being impacted by the fire. Everybody. I mean, its a frightening thing. If you are worried about your own home and family but additionally you had people watching this wall of fire and sender had to be thinking about their own lives but put it aside and took care of the patients. Electric and Water Service at the site will have to undergo 48 hours testing. Reporter jackie ward dogs close to the Sonoma County community is close to the Sonoma CountyCommunity College. Reporter were somewhere between santa rosa and glen ellen met by several roadblocks. Those flames are why. That is the ridge of highway 12 that youre looking at over the hills and those flames are only intended to get closer. Last night around 7 00, this area these hills right here were just smoke but now obviously this situation has gotten much more intense. And the flames are moving in a southeast direction towards glen ellen. Thats a very small area just south of kenwood next to jack london state historic park. According to the 2010 census, only 784 people live there and yesterday, home after home went up in flames all along there. Some of the homes were multi Million Dollar estates and chopper 5 captured the moment when some homes were completely engulfed in flames. Firefighters not able to reach them in time. We were able to get to cavedale road a narrow single lane and you can see the magnitude of the fire its blanketed the hillside there. Some people had to make some Big Decisions and decide whether to leave their homes or not. Winds are supposed to shift again tonight, head back this way so were not real sure. Cars are packed. Sprinklers are on around the yards at rooftop and were just waiting to see what happens. Reporter glen ellen does have mandatory evacuations at arnold drive at State Hospital in between madrone road and warm springs road. West of jack london state park, enterprise road, wall road, cavedale road, and to give you an update on where we are right now, three bulldozers are out cutting back the fire lines. They are trying to contain this as much as they can. But as neda has been saying, those winds that are picking up, we expect this area to be covered in flames probably by this afternoon. Back to you. Right now, it is calmer as were seeing in the live shots but unfortunately, its changing direction and its going to intensify throughout the Morning Hours and especially tonight so lets show you some of the areas where these fires are burning. I want to pinpoint whats going on with those winds right now in sonoma, southsouthwest at 6. Yountville southsouthwest as well at 6. And vacaville 8 miles per hour. So expected gusts this morning 25 to 35mileperhour winds in the Morning Hours. So its going to continue to move flames northeast. They are calm in st. Helena. What were noticing, its going to be a continuous shift. So this afternoon winds will be stronger later. Right now in fairfield up to 17 but then we are going to see the winds change direction increasing those winds. So you can see it here with our futurecast. You get a sense of whats happening. Santa rosa, napa and fairfield are on fire. The winds are going to continue to stay strong throughout the morning. Today, then later on tonight, this red flag warning will be in effect for all north bay hills because of the direction of the hill. 30 to 35mileperhour gusts this afternoon. When the winds shift, hm comes down. Right now theres still moisture in the air but tonight into tomorrow night well see the winds also stay strong but our humidity levels will drop. So winds will be strong this morning and then again increase tonight through tomorrow night. The wind direction will shift which of course is why we are going to see humidity levels drop. Temperatures are cooler so for the next few days stay about five to eight degrees cooler than the past couple of days. Heres a look at the humidity levels now. 86 in napa. Thats not bad. 80 in fairfield. Santa rosa 92 . So still moist in the air. Just similar to yesterday morning. Morning hours of course is when we get relief when it comes to humidity. Tonight when we see you back here tomorrow morning, those humidity levels could be as low as 20 . 30 overnight during the day though 12 . Extremely dry for those Northeast Bay hills which is why this red flag warning wont go into effect from tonight into tomorrow night because of the dry conditions but the winds will stay strong today, tonight and tomorrow. So hopefully that clarifies things. Its confusing. When it comes to fire behavior, its all erratic anyway in the area of the fires. Visibility is not too bad. Back to you. Thank you. One huge concern during the fires has been saving animals in harms way. John ramos introduces to us a group of horse lovers who teamed up with facebook to lend a helping hand. Reporter in any large fire theres the big story and 1,000 small ones. On this night, one of those played out on Bennett Valley road in santa rosa. Were unable to get in but we are working on it with Law Enforcement. Reporter a small army of civilians organized on facebook showed up to collect horses in an area already evacuated. When Law Enforcement finally let them in, it didnt take long to find those left behind. A small herd of rescue horses living out their lives on ned mcdonalds property. We dont ride them, we dont have a trail to take them out. Reporter with the fire burning above them, the rescuers work to halter the skittish animals but none of the horses had ever seen a trailer in about four years so it was a challenge for these inexperienced volunteers. You have never handled a horse before . Never. As is probably evident from th footage over there. [ laughter ] reporter the rescues horses havent been handled for a long time . Very large horses, very active. Reporter they tried pulling the skittish horses and bribing them with hay. But they still wouldnt go in. Finally with the light fading and flames threatening on the hills above a local vet showed up with sedatives to calm things down. And then success. One by one, they followed each other into the trailer. Do you feel like youre saving their lives . You never know. But if you stay here with the evac order, theres a good chance we are. Reporter no one knows what this fire will do next. How much more heartache it may bring. But on this night, a group of strangers was able to offer the helpless a way to safety. Its helping. And i cant leave a horse behind. I cant leave an animal behind. If i have a chance to help, im going do it. Reporter in santa rosa, john ramos, kpix 5. I remember a time when we all you can also see some of the active flames. We are sta satellite images from noaa show the thick sm coating northern california. You can also see some of the active flames burning. We are starting to hear more stories about heroic rescues over the past three days from the fires burning in napa and sonoma counties. Katie nielsen joining us now to tell us about how the california Highway Patrol has stepped in to help. Reporter its incredible, anne. Its something we have talked about over the last couple of days how fast these fires are moving. Thats why chp helicopter pilots have become unwitting heroes rescuing almost 50 people, five dogs and a cat. In one case, they rescued a group of vineyard workers from a winery. Those workers were picking grapes overnight and when the atlas fire roared closer they were trapped at the top of a ridgeline. It was a situation these seasoned pilots have never seen before. Flying light aircraft for 30 years panned never been tossed around like that. Under night vision goggles it looked like a big bomb went off. Reporter these pilots had no Radio Communications using night vision goggles to look for those trapped on the ground. In a social media post from Chps Golden Gate Division it says, air bay hills. Fire behavior will become erratic today and tomorrow and dry dusty conditions expected this afternoon. So it wont just be windy tonight. It will be dry. Humidity levels will drop. I want to go hour by hour through our futurecast for the Morning Hours to clarify whats going on here. Santa rosa, 7 a. M. They will stay strong. Napa winds intensify by 9 a. M. A northeast wind coming in. So thats dry winds coming through fairfield, napa, as well. Santa rosa 10, 11. This entire area in the north bay hills by noon will be gusty winds. It wont be as dry yet until later on tonight. After 4, 5 00 then well start to get more of a northeast wind. That of course is why we have that red flag warning. Tonight through tomorrow will be in the 20s down into the teens. Air qualitywise, because we are getting more of a westerly flow, the unhealthy air is now staying in the area of the fires, not as bad for places like the coast, east bay, South Central bay. But the air quality index the spare the air folks are calling for unhealthy conditions throughout the day. One bit of leaf is in the form of temperatures relief is in the form of temperatures with cool air in the next few days. In honor of spare the air day, we are keeping a close eye on your mass transit. Right now bart is reporting major delays between sfo and South San Francisco stations. This is all due to an equipment problem on the tracks. Well update you as soon as we get more information. The rest of the mass transit is running with no delays. We are tracking mass transit in the north bay, as well. The vine bus is canceled today. Golden gate transit will be on a limited service. And the north bay bus connections to and from martinez have been restored on capitol corridor. Time now 4 52. Amid all the heartbreak, we are hearing some incredible stories emerge from the fire zone. The priceless discovery made where one womans home once stood. Thick, carved turkey breast. This is the scene in the annandale heights area last night where cars lined park trail drive are near summer summerfield road and leaving. Early monday morning one persons house burned to the ground. Allen martin shows us the treasure that they found in the rubble that they thought they would never see again. Theres a lot of memories in this house. And this is horrible. Reporter bob and Tammy Christiansen have lived on hopper avenue in santa rosa for 30 years. They have raised three kids in this house or what was this house. The fire sunday was a shock. My wife woke up at 10 after 2 00 and we had about 20 minutes to get out. Reporter they took separate cars, got stuck in the traffic gridlock, as embers flew and houses burned all around them. Now less than 48 hours later, their house, like many of their neighbors, is ash and rubble. But they are back to salvage whatever they can. One thing builds on another. You know, hope. She is hoping she can find Something Else and, um, try to dig something out of all this trouble. It was important to come back because theres a lot of sentimental items that i was hoping to find before somebody else found them. Reporter as in her wedding ring that she took off before going to bed sunday night. She heard that another woman had success. If she found her wedding ring, i thought, i have to try. And so we got in and i found it. Reporter she had a pretty good idea of where to start looking. I started, you know, into the front door and i immediately went to where i knew my jewelry box was and i just started sifting. And there it was. And its still in pretty good shape after all these years. [ laughter ] and a fire. [ laughter ] reporter to say this is a happy ending doesnt tell the whole story. You see, a week before the fire the christiansens daughter was at a bachelorette weekend at a Country Music concert in las vegas. It was a rough week because the sunday prior the 2nd of october she woke me up around 10 00 that there was an active shooter in las vegas and my daughter was in that concert so we were up all night trying to find her location and made contact with her while she was barricaded in a building in las vegas because of the shooter.
