Kristin harris has more from air quality officials. Reporter a fiery, smoky sunset over the east bay skies laden with heavy smoke from the north bay fires. Susan rodriguez told us the smoke was unbearable this morning in fairfield. It was bad. I mean, you know, it was thick, and plus you could look over the ridge and you could see the glow of the fire on the other side of the ridge. Reporter it looked clear at this park in alameda where we met her, but when we went to higher ground, the view from the Oakland Hills mostly obscured by haze from the fires, locked over parts of the east bay. Air quality Officials Say its thick with particulate matter which can get deep in the lungs and worsen breathing problems. What i would say if you smell smoke and see smoke, protect yourself. Keep yourself indoors with windows and doors closed and try not to do a lot of heavy exercise outdoors when theres smoke present. Its a little concerning. You know, they dont want nobody outside. Reporter the groups most vulnerable, young children, the elderly, pregnant women and those with respiratory issues like asthma. Health Officials Say theres no telling how long the haze will hang around. If weather, the wind patterns shift, we might see a clearing of our skies. Reporter in oakland, kristin ayers, kpix5. My family and i were actually camping in the Santa Cruz Mountain when is all this was going on. We were driving into san jose yesterday afternoon probably about 2 00, you could see the haze from the fires down there, all the way down to san jose. Yeah. Thats like 80 miles away. Right. Thats really the wind that pushes all of that, right . Yeah. And the wind direction was coming from the north, so it pushed everything south. The good news today is we have a visit in those wind directions. Were actually seeing the winds coming off the coastline so were getting this onshore flow. Its calm this morning which is what we saw in katies live shot there and that is great news. Right now is really the chance for those firefighters to do what they can through these Morning Hours because we are seeing these winds calm, down to 3mileperhour winds in napa, so that is a huge relief for them. We are also seeing the wind, a lot of them coming out of the west along the coastline, so thats pushing the smoke away from us. We still have this redflag warning in effect until 5 00 a. M. Today because its still humidity levels down to 30 to 40 , so we did get relief compared to what we saw yesterday morning. But we are also going to watch the breezy conditions again tomorrow because its not over yet. Todays kind of the calm before we get more dry winds coming in tomorrow. Heres what were dealing with today. So this light onshore flow will help push that smoke away. Its actually going to shift the direction of the smoke. So were going to see that smoke move further north instead of south which is what we saw yesterday. So wind direction makes all the difference. We do have unhealthy air quality for the north bay, coast and central bay still according to the spare the air folks, and moderate conditions for the east bay and further south. So its still advised to not go outdoors if you are sensitive to a lot of the particulate matter thats in the air. As far as visibility is concerned, its clear everywhere except for right near the fire there at napa, 1. 5mile visibility there, petaluma, sixmile visibility. Santa rosas monitor unfortunately is not working at this moment. This is why we saw such erratic conditions and were going to continue to see that. The fire danger were dealing with, alltime record dry conditions out there because of the extreme drought we experienced. Then we got record rains an that created and that created all kinds of grass and fueled the fires and causes the fires to burn so quickly. Then you add that to drought, diseasestricken heavier fuel, so those trees out there in those north bay hills are quickly, easily flammable. And then we had the high winds, of course, in sonoma, santa rosa, those peak gusts at 79, 68. We saw temperatures spike to 91 degrees at 4 30 in the morning at this time yesterday. That is closed as well as portions of highway excuse me, of mark west stream and old redwood highway, that remains shut down as well. Huge difference from what we saw this time yesterday morning when the gusts were up to 60, 70 miles per hour. Now were seeing actually calm conditions and cooler conditions out there. Thankfully. So this is the chance for those fire crews to really get out there. I want to keep whats going on with the winds because, of course, that makes all the difference when it comes to fighting these fires. Right now you can see theres calm conditions. Some winds coming out of the east northeast like in hayward and fremont. To the north were seeing east northeast in napa, fairfield as well. But just a 3mileperhour sustained wind. We will see the winds mf in from the west. Heres your wind gust futurecast. By 7 00 a. M. Were going to continue to see winds in around the 2 to 5mile perhour range for all the areas with all the fires burning, so the north bay hills will be much calmer. By 10 00 a. M. , well just pick up a little bit, but nothing too significant. By 1 00, 2 00 when temperatures will start to warm up a little bit. The napa winds may increase a bit, but 6 to 8mileperhour a far cry from where we were yesterday when we were looking at the numbers in the 20s and 30s. By this afternoon well start to see it pick up in fairfield as well, and then things will calm down a little bit tonight, but then tomorrow so this is why today is really the day for those firefighters because tomorrow after midnight were going to start to see these numbers increase yet again, and this is going to be some dryer air coming through. Today is the moist west winds bringing in that increase in humidity and calmer conditions. Tomorrow, though, well see the winds pick up again for santa rosa, those places hit hard by those fires. Mendocino county as well. So when you see those reds, thats definitely not good news for the firefighters. So today is the chance, that light onshore wind will help them out. Tomorrow, though, this low is going to drop down and thats why those winds will intensify in the morning. So the humidity levels may drop yet again for wednesday morning. As far as temperatures today go, heres what theyre dealing with to the north where the fires are burning. 80 degrees for santa rosa, 82 napa, so a little bit cooler than what they saw yesterday. San rafiel will be 78, San Francisco today 71 degrees and oakland 77. Keep in mind our air quality will still be unhealthy, especially to the north, but we are going to see our temperatures cool off, so it wont feel as uncomfortable. And that cooler air will actually settle in for the next few days before we get warmer conditions by the time we get to the weekend. Jacquelin. Okay, thank you. Right now we are tracking your road closures as well as which ones are open. So if you are going to be driving through the area, we have a live look or lets take a live look right now 101 at highway 12. You can see just a few cars out there.
