I havent seen anyone throwing water in any direction, it is just getting people out of the way of the fire. About the time you see where it is, it already is moving toward you. Highway patrol just showed up and i saw fire trucks heading west on 12 i guess that would be toward santa rosa and the scene you just saw but the fire, here, has pretty much burned through. Roads are still clear and theres so much smoke and and and in the video, you can see that sparks are flying across the road. It is a little harrowing and the other thing, with the fires in so many different directions, which direction do you send everyone . The first thing i noticed, there was not really one direction you could go to get away from all of this. It was more where you happened to be at what moment and where you would drive. It was chaotic and quite frankly, i got the idea that the firefighters and the police were managing something and they are in the same boat as everyone else, making it up as they go along. And evolving situation. The fire has been spreading so quickly due to the weather conditions and we are talking about the smell of smoke, the degree of smoke in the air. Reporter i took a little drive up napa road off highway 12 and made it a couple of miles and came across something the confusion there is a red pickup truck which is completely smashed in on the frontend, completely smashed up to the cab and im told by highway control that it read hit it ran headlong into a parked cruiser and i dont have specifics if this was during the evacuation or what the Patrol Officer was doing, but a violent collision on napa road unfortunately no one was in the cruiser that was pushed off the road into some trees. They couldnt find the driver of the truck but have since learned that the driver of the truck had checked himself into a nearby hospital. Somehow, he got out of the wreckage and got out of the area, maybe as the fire came through and checked himself into the hospital. With the amount of smoke and fire out here, driving is certainly difficult and my suspicion is that this is the result of that hazard. Wilson walker live for us along highway 12. Is the first thing that looks like they would do this, but my observation is watching this ride out to the field but the wind is so strong, only so much you can do here other than trying to get people out of the way. That has been going on for over seven hours. Containment does seem very far away and they are giving any numbers on that right now. Im getting a sense that what you are telling me is it is a chaotic situation where there isnt a handle on what roadways should be closed, at this point. It is sort of evolving and that would make driving around the area very dangerous. Are you getting the feeling people are all heading south . Yes. A lot of people have left, obviously. The first hour or two was particularly challenging. There was no real sense of where the fire was and when you saw it, you could say it was going with the wind, right . People had limited options depending on what side of the county line you were on. If you are east, you could have retreated back to napa and to the west, you may have gone to the west a little bit. Anyone in the middle, it was chaotic and hard to see. There was fire in every direction. A chaotic and evolving situation. People are asked to stay off the roadways if you dont need to immediately evacuate. Stay off the roadways and avoid calling 911 unless you have an emergency with flames close to your home. Lets go live to Jessica Flores at an Evacuation Center and she has been speaking with hundreds of people who had seconds to evacuate, getting a knock on their door at 1 00 a. M. Jessica . Reporter we are here at Crosswalk Community church and this is actually completely full. There are 350 folks here and robert has been here since about 1 00 a. M. He hasnt left and it has been a scary situation. We were watching the news at 10 00 and weve seen a fire in the area around atlas peak road, pretty close to us and we live near there. They said you should step outside and take a look and sure enough, flames were a couple of hundred feet high and a couple of miles away. We just e t and we ansat d here and saw tanks exploding. We waited for the next course of action and about 1 00 a. M. , the Sheriffs Department indicated we should evacuate. We ended up, from there, just trying to find out where the location was to go to an crosswalk was one of the locations to evacuate too. Weve been here since about 1 00 this morning, getting no sleep and waiting to see what happens. Hopefully, we will have a place to go back to. Right now, ive heard there are some pretty bad areas out there right now. You saw the flames a couple of hundred feet away and you hadnt seen them die down at all . The only time they really died down was when the smoke came down on top of us and up until then, the clouds were up high and smoke was up high and we saw flames and all of a sudden it crept down where we were living and became pretty much unbearable to breathe. Thats anoth reaserwewhy on th report we would have been left, anyway. It was too hard to breathe. We jumped across montecito and went over to the east hills and we headed this direction. Reporter you basically had grassy areas and hills behind your home. Really easy for the fire to rip threw these acres . Yes. Really, youve got vineyards and a lot of them have just gone through harvest and there was a lot of dry leaves and the vineyards have been dormant. A lot of dry foliage and dry right now. You can see we are in fall conditiond nsthe leaves ar right now. Rtthk you, robert, for talking to us. A lot of folks are not sure what will happen to their homes. Our thoughts and prayers are with you guys. We were just in this area and we could see flames, as well. Thanks for talking to us. Theyve opened a third Evacuation Center there. This is a really dire situation. There are elderly folks and paramedics are standing by if there are issues. There is food and water and they have cots where people are trying to sleep right now. A very scary time, not knowing what will happen to their homes or not knowing what the devastation will be when they wake up. Jessica flores, kpix5. The information will be very slow to come in because firefighters are trying to deal with getting people out of the way of the fire before they begin to put it out or get a handle on the damage they are dealing with. I can only imagine the number of Evacuation Centers now open across these counties. Resources are thinly spread. Doesnt seem like the red cross can get enough stuff into that area, the shelter where you are, right now . Reporter yes. Weve actually seen a red cross reli red cross relief truck that is full of food and water. They have the resources they need and people are coming here. We are asking folks that they heare to volunteer. There are people volunteering to help out. The red cross is all hands on deck at these locations. The Napa Valley College jim, and the community church, your best bet if you need to evacuate with family or friends, it is to go to one of those locations at the napa fairgrounds or Napa Valley College gymnasium. Folks are being pretty good considering they dont know what happens. Theyre just trying to get through the night. They need to figure out the next step. Jessica flores live in napa and we just got word that the power has gone out at Kaiser Permanente high school in santa rosa, one of two hospitals in santa rosa that have been evacuated. Right now, where the monitor is in napa, it is calm but north and west of the monitor, you can see the areas in orange and bright red and fires are burning. Several complex fires because the embers have been all over the place. Santa rosa, theres another fire and this area has not calmed down much at all and is not expected to for a few hours. By 9 00, things should calm down and fairfield is strong. At 10 00, things may wind down and then it may be calm or with the wind advisory ending at 11 00. It is expected to be better later this afternoon but this morning, Mother Nature is working against them with downed trees and power lines. Smoke is coming in from the fires and you can actually see it. Lots of thick smoke affecting visibility and air quality. The direction of the wind is causing San Francisco to smell in tenth smoke. I will talk more about this as we continue to track this. Lets check the roadways with jaclyn. Highway 47 is completely shut down in both directions between 101 and interstate 80. For folks who need to get to and from 101, you will not use highway 37. You can use the san rafael bridge but keep in mind it will be a slower ride than usual.
