We do have a slow warming trend starting today so we are going to see those temperatures rise a couple of degrees compared to yesterday. It feels chilly below average. Today though we are staying right around where we should be this time of year. Winds are calm today and the weekend is going to be toasty so yes by the time we hit friday into the weekend get ready for warmer air. We also saw some snow across the sierra. Southern portions of the sierra, no pictures posted by tahoe but its still beautiful in the higher elevations. Its cooler today because the remnants of the colder air will be working its way through. Calm winds. Yesterday we saw a breeze in the afternoon. Today, though, look at that, just 7mileperhour sustained winds at sfo. Calm in oakland and berkeley. Concord southeast winds at 5 miles per hour. So thats a look at your wind speeds. Well have more in a bit. This is my favorite time in the bay area this time of year. The weather is perfect. One lane closed between monument boulevard and rudgear road until 5 a. M. But the delays stuck around all day long yesterday so be prepared for that. We also have a connector ramp thats closed from eastbound 24 to southbound 680. Right now, that traffic is really slow. Heres a live look through walnut creek southbound 680 at north main street. Those taillights are brake lights, i should say, 33 minutes from willow pass road to el pintado road. Give yourself some extra time through that stretch. Its referring to the vegas take a look at the cover of new york daily news. The headline, why is this legal . Its referring to the vegas shooters arsenal of weapons. Authorities say he modified 12 of them to unload thousands of rounds with a simple device called a bump stock. Its legal. Christin ayers shows us how it works. [ automatic gunfire ] reporter its the closest you can get to an automatic firearm without actually having one. A semiautomatic outfitted with a plastic device called a bump stock. Its totally legal in california a novelty item which kpix 5 security analyst jeff harp says allows the shooter to fire hundreds of rounds per minute. It serves sort of as a substitute for having a fully automatic weapon. Reporter authorities now say the las vegas gunman, stephen paddock, had a dozen bump stocks on a dozen different firearms. Photos from inside his hotel room show two ar15 type rifles on the floor. Experts believe this one has the bump stock installed. The fact that the bump stocks were on a number of weapons that they recovered tells me that he had a lot in mind. He wanted to be able to put a lot of rounds down range to inflict as much damage as possible in a short amount of time. Reporter lawmakers have tried to crack down on bump stocks. Senator Dianne Feinstein tried and failed to pass a ban in 2012 after the sandy hook shooting. Today she tweeted, im looking at ways to proceed with legislation to ban bump fire stocks and close this ridiculous loophole. Now harp says the device will inevitably come under more scrutiny. At some point you have to draw a line in the sand and say enough is enough. If we have mass murder going on and we determine that its all done with assault rifles, i think we have to look really hardly who has access to these rifles . Reporter christin ayers, kpix 5. Its a california treasure. The Coastal Commission eventually ordered khosla to open the gate or face daily fines. Whether it stays open, remains to be seen. The beach is public. The access road is on khoslas property. A good day to get outside . It is. Nice and sunny out there. Bring your sunglasses. Keep them handy. Sunblock of course because its going to feel not as warm but its going to actually the sun will be shining brightly. Heres three things to remember today. Temperatures are starting their slow rise. So yesterday was a bit crisp out there. Today add a couple more degrees to yesterday. It will start to feel warming but today will be the mild day of the week. Winds will be calm. But guess what. By the time we reach the weekend, 10 to 15 degrees above average temperatures expected because High Pressure will be coming through. Heres a look at our bay bridge. Look how gorgeous that is. I love this sparkling lights every morning. 53 degrees in concord. Oakland. 50. Livermore at 50. San francisco 55. Cooler in santa rosa at 44 degrees. But as you see from our satelliteradar not much action going on, not much cloud cover at all today no fog in sight. We did see some clouds coming through some storm systems that worked across the portions of the sierra bringing snow down to southern sierra. It was just cold enough to turn that rain into snow and slush and now that low pressure that did bring that storm system through is moving further east. So as this heads that way, we are going to get warmer air so this High Pressure will come to our area and the warmer air will reach us which will be in time for the weekend. Timing it out just right. So heres whats happening at the beaches today. Well be cool 67 degrees. Three to fivefoot waves a Small Craft Advisory for portions south of monterey. You see it on your sevenday forecast. By friday, saturday, sunday, temperatures in the 90s possibly even mid90s for some inland communities low 80s for the bay and upper 70s at the beaches by saturday. We are tracking speeds in the green for drivers along highway 24. Youre taking a live look. Those taillights moving westbound. And thats as you make your way through orinda. We have major slowdowns just trying to get to highway 24. Well take it to the maps. You can see that southbound direction of 680 is completely backed up. And its backing up onto 242, as well. This is all due to caltrans. They have one lane closed and its supposed to be reopened by 5 00 this morning. The same roadwork going on yesterday and its destroyed the morning commute. Its just those delays stuck around all morning long. So be prepared for that. Give yourself some extra time if this is part of your commute. Its likely to be slow throughout much of the morning. We also have some roadwork, the eastbound 24 to southbound 680 connector ramp slows as well until about 5 a. M. Heres a live look at your ride and you can see 680 and 242 completely backed up. But they are stopped and many of those lanes were looking at 52 minutes from willow pass road down towards highway 24. If you can avoid 680 or 242 until after the morning commute, i would definitely consider an alternate route depending where you need to go this morning.
